Just started Calc 1 this summer as incoming freshman. First day was a 3 hr long lecture in which I felt like an idiot almost after finishing highschool as a valedictorian. Watching this gained back my confidence in myself and in other words, you’re nothing but amazing!

This is not to sound rude, whatsoever, but: I've just started university too, and as a Scottish student, I'm curious about the American high school system. Have you guys not touched calculus before university? these are some fairly basic concepts that we covered at age 14/15.
@@danamohammed1604 It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't feel the same way about it, but I'll still try! Math, in any topic, finds its roots in problem solving. Problem solving exists in things like puzzles, and other types of activities requiring critical thinking. Some people find pleasure and satisfaction in being able to come to solutions about various different types of problem solving, and math is no exception. School forcing people to learn at a controlled pace, and having good grades are one of the reasons why people might be turned away from something like mathematics, but there is no denying that there is still a very heavy satisfaction in being able to find solutions to math problems in general. It's something people can find a lot of passion in doing (like myself), and can actually be a nice passion project. It's understandable if you don't feel the same way, but that's the general idea behind why someone can find it fun. It really boils down to the type of passion someone can have, and that is true for any subject at all.
After being frustrated with an incompetent teacher who struggles to teach simple concepts I decided to teach myself calculus. I found your course and it is very easy to understand. Thank you so much.
This man right here is the real deal! I was struggling to learn calculus from my teacher and then I found TOCT and I started seeing improvements after just a few videos. Good luck to everyone!
Calculus seems so intimidating to me because I've only ever gotten to pre calculus in high school (ten years ago) which didn't include any of this stuff. Watching this video I understood everything and you made me feel encouraged to learn more calculus. Thank you so much.
Yes, I have the same situation. I would say, you can take a textbook from Sullivan (every edition), and try to solve some of the calculus problems there, if you want. There is a chapter 8, which I do found hightly interesting. When I was in school, one year we have had a very good teacher, who could explain everything very understandable. He also said, I have a technical mind(which I think was projection, but still). I also can remember, that I was very fast exactly in those topics. However, if you study high mathematics at the university you have to have high motivation and strong nerves, I believe. For me mathematics is just an intellectual hobby. It may sound stupid, but it is so. The book by Sullivan is called College Algebra (some of the questions there are really difficult). So, if you are really interested, I would recommend it. It is also printed in Chicago, as I have heard one of the Top Universities in the US. P.S. Book by Sullivan is only an introduction in the higher mathematics for the whole spectrum of jobs. I would say it could be a part of some course in econimics, but not the programm for the older students. In the third or fifth year of study.
Challenging yourself with math and self study by watching your videos really helps keep your mental acuity and keep your brain stimulated and maintain sharp focus. Hopefully others see it this way too.
when im given assignment on math and physics i would always look for OCT tutorials rather wasting time watching others. this man should be awarded a novel prize cos thousands of students are benefitting from him.
Seriously, you are the best! No fluff, just straight to the point. I am a high school math teacher, the highest I go is pre-calculus which is really just Algebra 2 haha. I have my math core test tomorrow for my final certification test and you're a GODSEND

1.John's farm is 600m wide. He planted trees 15m apart along the width of the farm to act as wind breakers. How many trees did he plant? 2. From town x to town y poles are planted 25km apart. If the number of poles used are 25, what is the distance between the two towns? 3. Trees were planted along a road 5.5km on both sides. If the distance between them is 25m. How many trees were planted?. Please can you solve questions like this?
1) divide the total distance of John's farm (600m) by 15m and you get the number of trees. You can imagine each tree taking up a certain amount of space (15m) each, meaning each tree will take up 15m of the total distance. So you get 600m/15m=40 trees. Or you can imagine it as an algebraic function that you can rearrange. For example, (total distance) = (number of trees) x (distance between trees). Since you want to isolate the unknown variable of how many trees there are you divide both sides with the distance between each tree.
