I used to work at the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center as an animal care professional. I got to work with all the animals he showed here, including the musk ox. And his right, the exhibits are spacious. The brown bears along have 14 acres.

The Panhandle of Alaska (Southeast) has mild winters, strong maritime influence. It doesnt get bitterly cold.
I live in Soldotna, Alaska. I am 90 miles soulth of Anchorage. The fishing is great. Summers days are long and there is much to do.
I flew into Fairbanks Alaska on June 21st and attended a midnight baseball game. Watched the sun circle the horizon and drop below it for about 8 minutes then come right back up and continue its circuit!
Been there twice, but only as a day stop while on a cruise. It rains frequently in Anchorage. The food in Alaska is great! The seafood is outstanding as they have ample supplies of fresh salmon, halibut, dungeness and king crab. The Alaskan beer is great too. My favorite is Alaskan Amber.
I’ve lived in Anchorage all my life. There is a lot to do here for sure, but it is also a hub to many more things and go many more places, like Homer, Kenai/Soldotna, Talkeetna, Spencer Glacier, etc. Just be sure to watch for moose and bear while driving!
If you go to Alaska, I recommend a weekend in Denali Park and a cruise through the inside passage. You’ll see a lot of incredible sites. You’ll end up in Vancouver. A drive from there to see Bushart gardens - then a ferry trip to Seattle Washington. It’s a great trip!!!
Earthquake Park is an area that was subdivisions until the 1964 Earthquake where all the houses went into Cook Inlet. I lived a few blocks from it. It's near the airport. Also near there❤Kincade Park, I spent most of my spare time at the motocross track😂❤😂. My happy place on earth❤❤
I lived in Anchorage from 1990 to 1995. Many of these places are new to me.
Anchorage has it moments but get out of there as soon as you can (this is coming from an Alaskan born and raised 40+yrs) and get down to the Kenai peninsula. It is by far the better area to spend time. Sadly if you come up in the summer you will not get to see the Northern Lights.
Side note there are parts of Alaska that only gets below 0c for maybe 2-3 weeks out of the year. You have to remember there is one of the worlds largest temperate rain forest The Tongass National Forest in Alaska.
The first few years of my dad's retirement, my folks would fly to Alaska and rent an RV for the summer. I would fly up for a few weeks to join them. It was great because I could rent a car and we could take day trips away from the campground without having to drive off in the RV. So much to do and see especially if you are an outdoorsman or nature lover. I would definitely recommend taking a glacier cruise out of Valdez and riding the glass domed train to Denali for few nights stay. One highlight from my visit was witnessing the beluga whale migration. Alaska is majestic on a grand scale.
I haven't been to Alaska since 1991. I have an uncle who lives in Alaska.
In two weeks, my family went all over Alaska. Unfortunately my older brother got sick during our time in Alaska. So we had to spend 3 days in Anchorage Alaska. Nothing beats fresh smoked salmon or halibut. Reindeer sausage and eggs is a great breakfast.
I have a cousin in Anchorage, and she took us to the Wildlife Conservation Center during a visit. Really enjoyed it and the views on the drive are amazing as you drive along an arm of Cook Inlet with the mountains all around you.
They forgot the drive to Girdwood, Anchorages local ski resort and the drive there along the most beautiful roads in the world
One bad thing about summertime in Alaska is that they have mosquitoes the size of B-52 Bombers!
I use an ulu all the time in my kitchen here in Colorado.
I flew to Ankorage and rented a car for several days to get to Denali and Talkeetna. On the tour bus of Denali I saw a grizzly bear with 2 cubs, a fox, cariboo and Dahl sheep. In Talkeetna you can take a 4 seater plane trip over Denali Mountain including landing on a glacier. Driving back to hotel at night, a young moose crossed the road in front of me. I drove to Seward and took the all day combination boat and seaplane excursion. I saw pods of orcas, seals and dozens of bald eagles. I took the Inside Passage by ferry and saw humpback whales nearly the entire trip. Yes, its worth going to Alaska late summer or early autumn. You could include Vancover, Canada and Seattle, Washington.
Easiest way to see Alaska is with an Alaskan cruise...
@robertdedrick7937, if I had the opportunity to go back to AK (I drove up in '84 solo), I'd save a pile of money, and take the AK State Ferry for a quieter, cheaper, more cozy experience, but that's just me.
If you truly want to see Alaska, get out of the city and checkout the Palmer, Wasilla, Fairbanks, and Seaward areas. There is so much more to Alaska than Anchorage. I have lived in the Wasilla area for 10 years and it is so nice to see the wildlife and views.
If you guys would like a view from those who live in Alaska there are two families who live up there, a husband and wife live in Anchorage and the other live in North Pole (about 20 min or so from Fairbanks) and they are a family of 6. It is stunningly beautiful in the summer and the Northern Lights are so beautiful in the winter, but I have no desire to visit Fairbanks in January when it can get to -47 (sometimes -50) below (around -44 C). The couple from Anchorage is the Legg's and UA-cam channel is LeggLife. The family from North Pole are the Sommers and their YouTUbe channel is Sommers In Alaska. There are always other places you'd rather visit, until you visit that other place and fall so in love with it that you can't believe you waited so long to go. :) Anyway, just thought I'd share since Kat is interested in Alaska. :) Have a fantastic Tuesday!
My best memory is at the airport changing planes, came around a corner and bam in a glass case stood an Alaskan Brown Bear, that thing scared the crap out of me. The Alaskan Brown is a huge bear the paws must be 18 inches across with very big claws. I spent three weeks in the land of the midnight sun all I can say is WOW, I was doing tug and barge, many many years ago.
You mentioned the wind. You ought to see what's going on in Southern California right now! So far we have almost 10 inches of rain, the wind is blowing at 70 mph and above us it's snowing like Alaska gone mad. Google the storm, this date, and you won't believe your eyes. It did this last year, too. The crashing and booming along with the sirens is quite enough, thank you! Hope you all do better.
I only found out the other day that Budweiser originated in the Czech Republic under the name "Budweiser Budvar Original Czech Lager". Budějovický Budvar, n.p. is it's original Brewery & beer (I think).
You should catch Alaska during the Northern Lights you and the kids will be amazed and will be something you'll remember forever. Or you can take a cruise from San Francisco and get to tour a glacier and much more.
The thing about Alaska is you see things like a friend of mine who came here on 2 weeks military leave, 50 years ago

I spent a few months in Anchorage/Eagle River years ago when my brother was stationed at Fort Richardson-JBER. Basically stayed until my sister in law asked if I was ever going back to Maine.....
Earthquake park is due to the worst earthquake in the US. It is well named in Anchorage. As a Texan that has never been I know many that have been. And there is lots to do. Make it a summer trip. One bad thing are the no-see-ums will drive you crazy in the summer buzzing around your face & head. Not really around Anchorage so much that I have heard. But the temperature is very pleasant.
You definitely would not like Fairbanks. 😁 We just came out of a couple weeks in the negative 30's and 40's, so we're back on the positive side again for a bit. It'll probably dip down again before winter is over. Alaska is a beautiful place though. I moved up here a few years ago, and I'm never leaving.
Jono, probably not surprising, considering the size of Alaska, there is a climate span that goes from Arctic in the northern 1/3 of the state, followed by sub Arctic, where Fairbanks is located, all the way down to the southern tip of the state at the end of what the cruise lines call the Inside Passage, where the towns of Ketchikan and Metlakatla are located, and our climate here in northern IL are way harsher than theirs. Earthquake Park is a memorial to the horrific damage that was wrought in the Good Friday earthquake of March 27, 1964, which went from 8.4 to 8.6 on the Richter Scale, resulting in unbelievable damage.
The eatery called "The Kobuk" has the same name as 1 of the 2 national parks in AK which is above the Arctic Circle--Kobuk Valley, which was set aside to protect the migration route of a huge caribou herd which goes all the way through the neighboring Gates of the Arctic N.P. on through the remainder of AK, and well into Canada--one of the longest, if not THE longest migration on earth.
Rather than the midnight sunset, it's the midnight sun, in that it gets to about twilight, and that's as dark as it gets in summer. The opposite happens in the winter, when the sun finally makes it above the horizon in Anchorage at about 10, and sets around 4. In the Arctic, it's dark for at least a month.
I love Alaska, but I love AWAY from the cities. I think my favorite city was Seward, Alaska. Seward and Homer were my favorite cities, a lot smaller than Anchorage, has small quaint shops, lots of walking trails, lots of FISHING, walks on the beach are so amazing, never know what you will find on the beach, and restaurants with really great food. When my plane landed in Anchorage, the first thing I wanted to do was to check into my motel, grab a taxi, and go to a really good seafood restaurant. I love crab and was anxious to taste FRESH Alaskan crab. I have crab and shrimp. The shrimp also came from the Alaskan waters. OMG!!! I wish I could have had more stomachs to hold more of the delicious food. I knew I would never be back there again, so I wanted to enjoy all the fresh seafood that I could (I live in the Arizona desert and all seafood that comes here has probably been frozen for several months or more). The drive from Anchorage to Seward and Homer are breathtakingly beautiful! The wildlife, mountains, ocean, natural beauty, and other amazing things you will see, you will never forget. The only thing I wanted to see in Anchorage was the Native Museum and the other Museum. I did buy several ulus for myself and gifts for my family. The ulu is great for fileting fish as well as so many other things. I am one of those that see every big cities as all the same, all have retail stores to sell things, but nature and the natural beauty are different everywhere, so I prefer to avoid the big cities. I prefer to visit and shop at small towns where one of a kind items are hand made. I hope you all will get your dream come true.

I've been to Alaska, it's fantastically beautiful with lots to do. However, this video makes the state look rather mundane.
Anchorage has a very bad drug problem now so be prepared to see streets covered in needles 😢
