Thanks for sharing Tim. Another great video. I arrived in Alaska back in 1982, migrated south in 2013. Spent 28 of those years in Fairbanks. Worked hard. Played hard, cuz you can as a young man summer or winter. I had most of the toys. Snow machine, Jet ski and 4 wheeler. Didn’t get a boat because my good friend had one of which I helped maintain. It was a homemade wooden boat. 28’ flat bottom with a 115 fir propulsion. I did find a soul mate. Got married. 2 kids and so on. Heating oil went from .99 up to 5.00 a gallon during my 28 years in Fairbanks. The wife was born in Fairbanks. Her and the kids wanted out. It was getting to expensive and everybody was tired of the cold. I was getting tired of hauling water 3 to 4 times a week. There’s a lot of work involved to live in harsh environments. I worked in subzero conditions every year. One year it was so cold, -60, that the jets didn’t fly but our good ole dc6’s did. No warm cab on the forklifts either. Lots of fun times and great memories. In Idaho now. Take care and stay safe. The change up of your content is great.

Yeah if you think so, go on up and see for yourself lol. These are true and legit reasons why there ain't even a million people in a place, larger than many countries of the world but if you think he's just being coy, go ahead and pack your bags hahaha
I don't think so. I don't think you can compare this to other parts of the country where people are flocking to certain places, and the locals try to prevent new people from moving there. The stuff he said is real, and he probably understated a lot of it. Alaska gets romanticized in countless videos on youtube, and while it's an amazing place, the truth is that it has an abnormally high suicide rate because of how hard it is to live there. It's perfect for some people, but it's definitely not for most people.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism absolutely. I live in northern Michigan. We typically get really harsh winters but nothing like Alaska. Still, I hear people say how bad they struggle with winter here. We just went over a month without seeing the sun once. It's been dark and cloudy everyday, but at least it gets light during the day. The lack of sunshine has never bothered me, but being in total darkness for an extended period of time would drive me crazy. I definitely understand how it makes people depressed.
You had me at number one. Cold. I live in Queensland Australia. We don't do cold. Winter or Summer. I can get the peace and tranquillity. And be warm at the same time. But our nature try's to kill you too. Both are quite extreme places.

Yes !! That is why, those of us that tough it out, is for the beauty, Everywhere you look . For the young, an endless year round outdoor playground as Tim shows us ! Truly the Last Frontier. Man hasn't been able to destroy it yet , due to it's harshness ( daily earthquakes, avalanches, wild animals, ice jam or terrencial rains that cause flooding ( reason for braided rivers). One trip there, one time and that’s enough for any lover of sunshine! Juneau on August 1st, snow and sleet! Boarded the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, did the inside passage and swore I would never leave Florida for Alaska ever again!
Regardless of the downsides, you live in a beautiful spot! The vastness and giant snowy mountains reminds me a lot of Norway. All the best from Denmark
I've moved to Alaska 13 years ago and it was hard to deal with day lights and darkness and the cold, took me about 4 years to get use to it and I'm loving it and the danger around me. ❤. From fairbanks Ak 😊
You told us 10 reasons to not live there, but the images of this reason show one of the big reasons TO live there. Beautiful ! and not overloaded with tourists .
I've been to alaska on a cruise ship. The scenery is breath taking. You bring many valid points about living there.Cold, rain, dark, mosquitos - tapping out on those reasons.
Good job of putting the viewer on the edge of their chairs as we get an idea of what it's like being on top of clear ice with a deep lake below. I grew up in Ancorage starting in 1953. Landed at Elmendorf since the Anchorage airport wasn't yet ready for commercial carriers. Alaska has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol, or did back in the Fifties and Sixties. I've been depressed my whole life and the cold and dreariness of life there probably played it's part. Skiing was great. Educaton was excellent. High quality teachers. Most professionals there are a cut above, generally. Great place to learn to fly since conditions are challenging.
Great clip. Points out reasons why we stay lowly populated and not overcrowded. Traveling through parts of the Lower 48 recently makes one realize how much traffic there is 'down there', a real pain in the . . . ah well, you know.
💫Awesome💫 video, Timmy. I lived next door, in the Yukon, for 2 years. Also, grew up in a winter-real part of central Canada. So i know what you are talking about. The other side of all that is the intense beauty, sense of vastness and clean, cold air....👍😎🇨🇦❄🤍🔥
I spent a few months in Anchorage one summer. Very cool experience but I would say you are pretty spot-on. Surprised you didn't mention the size of the mosquitoes. Those things could carry you off!

Having lived in both Alsska and Hawaii, I agree 100%! Visit before ever moving to either, and you'd better have a fat bank account! Love the videos brother!
My mom works in Anchorage and I got to visit her this last year in July and got 2 out of 3 days in the low 70's/high60's and super sunny. I lucked out and went down to Whittier and did a glacier cruise that was breathtaking. I can't wait to go back. It was my first time and I fell in love.
I am very happy to see Alaska on my screen..I am a warm weather person so would not enjoy the frigid temps but I do enjoy the beauty of the scenery from the comfort of my home 😊
We get the skeeters here in the Yukon, but I was surprised you didn't mention those pesky teeny black flies that take a bite out of you and leave a painful welt. Maybe they don't exist coastal? I find those pretty annoying. All the other points match here except we don't get the rain like you do. Amazingly beautiful footage in this vid, thanks for that experience, I revel in the northern beauty and wildness.
Thanks for using the HD camera, so even the background is sharp. These cold empty lands always attracted me but I wouln't go living there. I just appreciate the beauty.
Too cold for me... but I enjoy watching your show. So I will live vicariously through you! I have sailor friends that I also enjoy. The world just has so much to offer. Thank you for sharing.
I was there on a steelhead fishing trip on the Kenai 20 years ago. It's was great but I could never live there. Waking up to the mountains was unreal. But every reason you said is the truth. I hate the cold now. Love your videos though tim. I give you a lot of credit because all ibwanna do is move to some where warm all year round now. I live in western NY and it gets brutal here off the lakes with lake effect snow. We had 5 feet 2 weeks ago. But keep up the vids...there great
They are huge and annoying. I was born and raised there. I left when I was 46. I live in Colorado and the people here complain about the mosquitos. They are tiny here and I haven't been bitten yet. My neighbor claims to get eaten alive. #skeeters #alaskastatebird #notreally #Ptarmigan #extracreditinBethel
If you live along the coastline, many of us do, the bugs are not a problem at all. If you go into the interior, then, well, just dont go into the interior.
@@davidsuch8942 Right. It's more the temperature I was referring to. I live in the midwest and mosquitoes aren't really a problem until summer. I thought Alaska wouldn't be warm long enough for them, but apparently they don't discriminate. Learned something new!
Tim here from Eagle River, I would agree Tim, I been back 30 years, lived here as a kid and it is a great beautiful place, but everything you talked about is so true. For me now, it’s a love hate relationship with AK, can’t find a place like it, want to leave, but want to stay, it is crazy. Keep the videos coming.
Or do you mean Chicken Creek?😜 that’s what my sister called Eagle River when she moved up there in the 70’s. Seemed like everything has a nick name, pretty funny, I guess you need a good sense of humor to live there!
My first trip up in Feb of 1979 gave me 45 reasons to not come back. Each one a degree below zero LOL. From 2002 to 2006 I came back for 5 solo fly in trips up into different parts of ANWR. I had snow on July 31st on one trip (my Bday) Mosquitos weren't too much of a problem, Deep Woods Off works. The noise of the nightly hatch was something else. Like a black rain rising from the ground with a buzz that sounded like 100 model airplanes in the distance.
I worked on some military bases in the winter in Alaska. Spent most of the time in Denali area. Frickin love Alaska but it was wild when propane was not dispensable from the cold. It’s crazy how quickly things become unmanageable
I lived in Alaska in 1972-73.....at Ft Wainwright.....Did a lot of skydiving there Love it ...... PS: Did some jumps at Manley Hot Springs ,We had to flyin there in a C-180 airplane....Stay in a log cabin....(weekend in 1972) lot of fun.....
I totally respect you for living there. But, there is a reason I moved South. I grew up in Northern Idaho right next to Canada and I just got tired of the ice, snow, and cold. Much love from down south. Love your channel but I think I will stay down here where it's warm.
#11 - black flies please take your fans on a trip to yukon and up the dempster hwy - now all the way to the ocean - the dempster can be an adventure, and more scenic than the haul road - maybe go during the northern arts festival in inuvik look fwd to each video - LOVE the far north - we've spent more than 10 summer/falls up there in a pop-up truck camper - not nearly as cozy as your truck house but a great contrast with SE arizona as a 78yr old granny, i feel like i'd like to feed you homemade soup and knit you warm mittens thanks so much for the videos
Alaska is a daunting, beautiful place. My wife and I rode our Honda Goldwing trike from Houston, Texas to Fairbanks, Alaska back in 2017. We rode a 2,000 mile loop in Alaska while we were there. Then we rode the ferry from Skagway down to Prince Rupert, BC and back home. This took place in early June. Along with Yukon Territory, it is the most mesmerizing place we have ever been. But living there would be tough!
Riding your bike on the ice reminded me that when I was in elementary school in (in the 1960s) I tried to ride my 3-speed bike on the frozen creek behind my house. Didn’t go well but I sure had a lot of fun trying😃! Thanks for the video!! Stay safe.
Thank you for letting us go with you on the frozen lake. That's awesome and also for letting us know the reason to not live in Alaska. It's nice to know things in advance for anyone thinking about going there Love from Ohio 💜
Ha that all sounds good to me! Apart from the bugs maybe, but we get bugs in summer here in the UK that seem to be getting bigger every year! and it rains..pretty much all year..
People see the Romance, Not the Danger. Alaska is a Unique Place on this Earth and takes a Hardy Soul to be able to Survive the Coid ,Dark, Isolation , Snow, Ect... Mostly Off Grid. I myself couldn't do it, but I live Vicariously through people like Tim and a couple others ( Alaskan Cabin Adventures and Simple Living Alaska.) Love All You Guys. BUT IT SURE IS BEAUTIFUL . ❤😊
@@benjaminhale1454For me it’s skiing. I can’t imagine living in a place with no mountains and no skiing. It’s a way of life and what keeps me pushing to stay super fit as a get old. Thats the reason, take care
Appreciate your insight! Great points about the bugs and lack of sun! We are in the panhandle of Idaho and plan to visit AK this July / August (want to see Denali and maybe see family in Fairbanks). I’ve been told by Alaskans that this area of North Idaho / MT is quite similar to AK. Excited to see your state and thanks again for sharing!
I can recall being on the opposite side of an 8" tree from a black bear. You just don't get those kinds of experiences, enjoy the freedom, fresh air and beauty of nature or find out what you are capable of hunkered down in suburbia. Your regular videos are a testament to the pluses of bush living for the more adventurous viewers....keep 'em coming.
Oh you are way up there. I agree. It is similar to Alaska in many ways. I'm in Southern Maine, Portland area... so a bit different than where you live, as you know.
Have been to Alaska twice, once on a cruise and once by land. Absolutely the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen but I’m content in Colorado! Love our 4 seasons! I would love to travel up your way again someday! 🦅 🎣
You make all these points sound like they're bad....to me they are ALL I want in life! Remote, away from people, away from internet and phone connections....ok, mosquitos are a beggar, but could be worse....Scotland has aggressive wee Midges!!! I'll take Alaskan mosquitos lol Love your channel! Liked, subscribed and shared. Please keep the amazing content coming. Someday I will visit Alaska. Its on my bucket list x
Hi Timmy wow the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, the snow covered mountains ,you riding a bike on the lake thanks for the information good to know, awesome video thanks for sharing stay safe and warm
You seem to be doing fine Tim... but thank-you for being honest about pros/cons. The idea of solitude seems great to me sometimes, but I don't know if I could actually live it for extended periods of time.
4:11 That is so eye openingly awesome. I had no idea one could even do such a thing. My mind had never even imagined you could fly across a frozen lake on a bicycle in a magical mountainous wonderland like that. I love riding my bicycle, but I’d never imagined riding it like that. Wow, that’s so cool.
My father was there during the war ( WWII ) and fell in love with it , it took him 50 years to visit again. He always talked about Alaska … I’ve never been
Is there anything that Tim can't do ? I love watching your videos,no matter what they're about! I don't enjoy cold weather but I really love looking at the beauty of it all through all your adventures! Thank you for sharing it with us!!! Sending love from Ohio ❤️
👍👏, good video, Timmy. Beautiful place you shot it in. My husband and i thought about moving to Alaska in the 70's, glad we didn't. I was like, "who ever would've thought, studded tires for a bike?"...not me.
@@johninalaska9563 Well I tried to post a couple of links to sites showing more info on it. I guess UA-cam flagged it or Timmy deleted it. Either way a simple Google search will lead you to some info on it. I just remember it cause I watched a documentary on it a long time ago.
I live on Vancouver Island, and I can relate to the small towns and the difficulty in finding a place to rent. There is a major housing crisis here in the lower mainland of BC, Canada as well. I think you will do better to find a small piece of land to park an RV on, or a Tiny House, or build yourself something, as the rental market in Western Canada is a total disaster.
Mosquitos...I've heard similar from many northernmost states in the lower 48. I saw a teeshirt in Wisconsin that had a graphic of a giant mosquito. In big black letters: Wisconsin's state bird
It definitely take a hardy sole to wanna live in AK. I have family I’ve been visiting on and off for 20 years and Timmy hits the nail on the head, it’s all those things and more. But I love that state! It’s beauty just grabs your senses. I really enjoy your content Tim!
Enjoyed that one. Thanks for sharing that. I have grown to really admire the place I've spent my whole life although in but it's not as remote as the one you share with us. At my age I won't get to see the incredible scenes you show us. I so thank you for that. Life is great even living in a van down by the river!
Portage Lake looks bigger than when I lived there from 1985-89. Drove up from Casper WY in June mosquitos were nasty, didn't mind the cold, darkness, went every place possible a car could go. Love your videos
The portage glacier use to be by the parking lot when it was still a dirt road, amazing to see how much of it has gone, just like kink glacier and matanuska glacier, crazy the changes ive seen in 40 years here..
Good video. I've been there twice with my dad. Had a wonderful time and I loved all the sunshine in the summer (I have no trouble sleeping!) and we didn't have much rain. I truly LOVED all the flowers during the summer, especially in the towns!! A little worrying about the grizzlies when out and about in the alders. We saw many, but no problems. Mosquitos.....Yeah. Definitely as much a problem for us as for the caribou. I wouldn't want to be there in the winter! I lived in Scandinavia when I was a teenager and I loved seeing the midnight sun go around the horizon, set for a few minutes and come right back up. But I don't like the dark during the winter. I have what I need in Colorado, for the most part. I live in the mountains with all the wildlife so I do get the cold and snow in the winter, but I've lived with it for over 70 years and aint leavin' any time soon! Alaska is a great place to visit, but not for everyone!! (And yes, it is expensive!)
Great video. I've never been to Alaska, but after seeing this...I definitely want to visit now! It's like seeing the complete opposite of everything I deal with here in Las Vegas. Plus, I've always wanted to visit a place that has very little daylight in a day. And if I don't need a passport to do that, even better. Take care!

Really enjoying the channel. I lived in Anchorage for a few months, loved Alaska. Hate the city I live in northern BC so I'm pretty familiar with most of it, we get more sunlight and not as remote where I am
I have always wanted to go to Alaska ever since I was a kid. Grew up in the North East, but my family moved to the deep south when I was a teen. Lucky, if we get 1 wewk of cold weather a year ! @@davidsuch8942 Right. It's more the temperature I was referring to. I live in the midwest and mosquitoes aren't really a problem until summer. I thought Alaska wouldn't be warm long enough for them, but apparently they don't discriminate. Learned something new!
Been to Alaska a couple times. Spent three months out on Amchitka summer of '01. Sure was nice to get back into Anchorage. Thanks for sharing!
I am really looking forward to visiting Alaska someday. I could watch the snow videos all day. Thank you for another great video!
The roadtrip up and back makes it 10 more fun and don't bring expensive rvs cuz they' get destroyed
You do mean C-130 right? :)
HHC 2-1 scouts lead the way
I totally respect you for living there. But, there is a reason I moved South. I grew up in Northern Idaho right next to Canada and I just got tired of the ice, snow, and cold. Much love from down south. Love your channel but I think I will stay down here where it's warm.
I really like being able to tag along on these adventures you have.
#11 - black flies
please take your fans on a trip to yukon and up the dempster hwy - now all the way to the ocean - the dempster can be an adventure, and more scenic than the haul road - maybe go during the northern arts festival in inuvik
look fwd to each video - LOVE the far north - we've spent more than 10 summer/falls up there in a pop-up truck camper - not nearly as cozy as your truck house but a great contrast with SE arizona
as a 78yr old granny, i feel like i'd like to feed you homemade soup and knit you warm mittens
thanks so much for the videos
It might not be the best place to live however you certainly make it look awesome 😊
Stay safe.
In the late 90s we would stud our bike tires and ride on the frozen creeks running thru town
@@skylermummert24 That’s very cool, you must have had a blast!!
I just love how the snow covers all the mountains around. It's beautiful. ❤
I’m coming baby!!! To visit that is. Some day!
I hate cold. That's reason enough for me to stay in sunny North Carolina. Love your articles, man.
Thank you for letting us go with you on the frozen lake. That's awesome and also for letting us know the reason to not live in Alaska. It's nice to know things in advance for anyone thinking about going there
Love from Ohio 💜
Ha that all sounds good to me! Apart from the bugs maybe, but we get bugs in summer here in the UK that seem to be getting bigger every year! and it rains..pretty much all year..
The length of darkness and lack of bright sunlight is what I’d struggle with the most. I get seasonal depression and worry it’d be bad up there.
I've never seen anything more spectacular and amazing. Thank you for showing me the world.❤
People see the Romance, Not the Danger.
I think you just sold me on Alaska! I find agreeable the things most people don't care for except the high cost of living and mosquitoes.
Alaska is on my bucket list I retire in two years at 62 and I’m heading up
Having lived in Maine, Florida and Montana. I Giggle at you in off road system village life!
Good morning from south Louisiana, gonna be 73f today
I'm from south louisiana too
Wouldn't want to be there in Louisiana this summer
Nothing better than sunny warm weather. Idk why anyone would want to live in.a cold climate. We only live once.
The lighting on the lake is awesome with that blueish hue
Very blue 💙 ice cold 🧊 cool 😎
Similar to Maine but a little more extreme. Takes hearty folks to live in places like we do
Hey fellow Mainah
Patten here
Oh you are way up there. I agree. It is similar to Alaska in many ways.
I'm in Southern Maine, Portland area... so a bit different than where you live, as you know.
I’m in central Maine. Still many luxuries that Alaska doesn’t have.
@atninfef there's a few of us Mainers here on Tim's channel. I didn't think there was, but I'm glad to see it. 😊
Glad I live in sunny warm Florida, can't stand the cold
Will be looking forward to hear about the dark side😮❤
Hi Timmy wow the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, the snow covered mountains ,you riding a bike on the lake thanks for the information good to know, awesome video thanks for sharing stay safe and warm
You seem to be doing fine Tim... but thank-you for being honest about pros/cons. The idea of solitude seems great to me sometimes, but I don't know if I could actually live it for extended periods of time.
Liked your video specially the view of the mountains you gaved us when you were cycling on the frozen lake. Thanks!
The Fourth Kind? (movie)
Lot of people disappear in Alaska...
That was a freaky movie.
Lots of people disappear everywhere.
That movie gave me nightmares for months on end as a teen... 😅
@Invertmini1212 Oh yeah man. Definitely not watching it again!
Great movie! Freaky
Kind of like living in Hawaii, but the "polar" opposite... (holds for applause)
(Standing ovation)
👍👏, good video, Timmy. Beautiful place you shot it in. My husband and i thought about moving to Alaska in the 70's, glad we didn't. I was like, "who ever would've thought, studded tires for a bike?"...not me.
Next episode: The Bright Side of Alaska | 10 reasons to move in
You can put those fuzzies on your and your speakers and it takes the wind sound out alot. Love all your videos.
I wonder if he is gonna mention all the serial killers that Alaska has had LOL
douknow57...How many would that be?
ALASKA , Is where long ago PEOPLE moved to DISSAPEAR for what ever reasons.
@@coldpopcarl Yeah it's a vast land and easy to disappear for sure.
When you allow millions of foreigners to invade your country what do you think is going to happen
Don't forget about the Hairy Man 😅
Have u had any encounters with the hairy man. I listen to Fred's channel about hairy man. Very interesting subject.
I've had no encounters myself. Upstate New York here. I really enjoy Fred as well 😊
Howdy Big T! Love the guitar and the background! I can handle all on those issues except the Mosquitoes! Hate mosquitos!
great show anyway! Saddle up!
“The truth ? The truth ? You can’t handle the truth.” @Al Pachino.👏
lol
Jack Nicholson!!!
Yeah, that's not Al Pacino lol.
Pacino.
Definitely not Pacino
Mosquitos...I've heard similar from many northernmost states in the lower 48.
I saw a teeshirt in Wisconsin that had a graphic of a giant mosquito.
In big black letters:
Wisconsin's state bird
I can confirm!
Let's guess: 1. Cold. 2. Dark. 3. Bears. 4. Alaskans. 5. Wolves. 6. Snow. 7. Far away. 8. Expensive. 9. Sarah Palin. 10. No women.
It definitely take a hardy sole to wanna live in AK. I have family I’ve been visiting on and off for 20 years and Timmy hits the nail on the head, it’s all those things and more. But I love that state! It’s beauty just grabs your senses. I really enjoy your content Tim!
I guess I should have watched this video first, before asking you all those questions on your other video. Thank you for all the information.
All truth! It's an incredible experience but after 4 years, I chose warmer climes. The land of extremes and rugged individuals. Thanks for sharing!
Enjoyed that one. Thanks for sharing that. I have grown to really admire the place I've spent my whole life although in but it's not as remote as the one you share with us. At my age I won't get to see the incredible scenes you show us. I so thank you for that. Life is great even living in a van down by the river!
Stunning images in this video. Well done sir.
Portage Lake looks bigger than when I lived there from 1985-89. Drove up from Casper WY in June mosquitos were nasty, didn't mind the cold, darkness, went every place possible a car could go. Love your videos
The glacier melted way back around the corner
Nice one timmy! Glad to see you getting lots of views these past few months, you deserve it!
Take care!
sounds like here in Northen Sweden,, we got snow from october to may, and in the winter sun gets up 9,45, and down 13,30 ;)
Loved this video!! It reminds me of when I lived on a lake in Michigan - so much fun getting out on the frozen lake!
You put out by far the most creative, diversified and beautiful videos on You tube! We found you about a month ago and have watched almost all you videos. Congratulations to you on your hard work. Thanks so much. Good Wishes.
Its wild you made this. I find these videos fascinating and it does look kinda awesome, but i hate the cold! Ive experienced -28f before and thought that was colder than possible. Ill watch from here, thanks!
Really enjoying the channel. I lived in Anchorage for a few months, loved Alaska. Hate the city
I live in northern BC so I'm pretty familiar with most of it, we get more sunlight and not as remote where I am
One thing you forgot to mention on the pro side, how beautiful it is there. Wonderful views on this vlog
The sights that you put up are some of the best scenery in the world. Ty for that.👍🇨🇦
Hi. 1st timer. Enjoyed the show. Appreciate the points you made. Certainly a place that's fitting for very "particular" individuals.
I have always wanted to go to Alaska ever since I was a kid. Grew up in the North East, but my family moved to the deep south when I was a teen. Lucky, if we get 1 wewk of cold weather a year ! Some of us are born loving snow and ice, and im one of them. Appreciate your video.
~Sweating in South East Texas 😊
I'm with you on this one.
