Why feminism still matters: Putting on feminist glasses | Julia Korbik | TEDxFSUJena

  • To create awareness for feminism, people have to see why feminism matters. But many people believe feminism has run its course. Who needs feminism? The truth is: I do, and so do you. Because feminism is the best bullshit-detector there is. If we put on our feminist glasses, we’ll see through the bullshit surrounding gender stereotypes and roles. As Simone de Beauvoir would say: „One is not born, but rather, becomes a feminist”. Equality has to be fought for - it is earned, not given.

    Feminism has become a dirty word because it's associated with SJWs, who are completely ridiculous. For example, in the multimedia experience Homestuck, the author wanted to avoid the race issue altogether, so he left all the characters as the default color, which is to say, completely blank, a hexadecimal value of #000000. The SJWs said it was racist because all the characters were white.
    There are also some people who call themselves feminists and assert that Hillary Clinton is better because she's a woman and that anyone who disagrees is sexist. However, that means you must support Sarah Palin because she's a woman, which is obviously wrong.
    It's important to remember that this is not real feminism. Feminism is and should be about equal rights for both women and men, not a bias towards are against any gender. I know that it has feminine in its name, but that's because women were the oppressed, not the men. Feminism has made LOTS of progress over the years, but the fight is not over.

      No Jonathan Bell, humanity has idiotic bigoted racists of every skin color. You accuse others of racism while you, yourself, actively promotes hateful racist stereotypes. Yet amazingly, somehow you remain oblivious to this fact. Fools refuse to examine reality. We are all suffering from that ignorance. Humans either accept what is true or become frustrated. Seeking to blame others for their frustrations, just or unjust, a dangerous hatred quickly fills their minds. Angry & misguided, people lash out. Fear & hate prevents human empowerment, and evil men exploit weakness. Race is irrelevant. Under blue skies we all bleed red colored blood, we cry salt flavored tears. Our genetic differences are so tiny. Our human experience isn't defined by our differences. People worldwide mostly think similar thoughts and we feel the same emotions. Everyone, everywhere can understand right & wrong. We all would agree that theft, rape, and murder is immoral. To blame people's problems on any race is beyond foolish. All races must work together against the true evils that plague us. The corporate greed of bankers & politicians, the lies of globalization are destroying humanity. I hate the evil blood suckers as much as any human can. But race simply can't help us identify mankind's real enemies.

    First of all: Work on your accent, I'm embarassed everytime I hear fellow germans speak like that. It instantly discredits everything you say, because you start to sound like an uneducated fool. If you're unable to change your accent, don't speak english at all. Just get a translator and every non-german speaker in the audience wears headphones to hear the translator instead. Fancy technology...
    Secondly: why feminism still matters: Saudi Arabia, Quatar etc etc therefore, there and done.
    Third: I prefer to wear useful glasses of egalitarian liberalism, with which you can see actual injustices instead of making them up just for the sake of it.

  • @henrietaserban1095

    Hi, folks! I do not hate feminism and I do not hate men. Briefly, it is not absolutely necessary that if one sees some patterns of social injustice involving men and women and directed towards women, one hates men. Also, the physical reality is not perfectly overlapped with social reality. The fact that men are more likely to be physically stronger does not mean that each and every one of them are or that a majority of them are, point one, and it does not mean that they manifest their physical strengths in society in a strong &positive manner - they do not all of them take on hard to do jobs that need muscles and benefit community - point two, and the fact that they are stronger does not justify why the majority of CEOs, MPs, decision factors etc. are men, point three. Another point to make is the muscles-brain difference - the brain is never 100% feminine or 100% masculine - so you may have masculine muscles but a preponderently feminine brain which means that your communication and relationing skills are above average and (paradoxically) you might be indeed the best for the leadership position you have got especially due to your feminine part of your masculine being! There are many, many, other points to make. All in all one can see better why feminism matters and that it does matter only when he or she experiments some of the subtle double standards that are still floating around on his or her own, or related to someone dear, say a daughter or a mom, say educated, smart and professionally fit but, for example, overlooked for promotion. This is when you become unenchanted so to speak and it is like a veil is lift away from your eyes. And as I see it this is what the speaker wants to express via the metaphor of ”feminist glasses”.

I think it has a great approach to modern day feminism and it explains clearly why feminism is still an important issue in our society despite men and women being equal to the law. I hope more people would see this and understand there is nothing wrong with feminism or calling yourself a feminist.

    This video will likely receive a lot of unexplained 'hate', justified or not - personally overall I liked the video.
    I'm curious on peoples thoughts however and wanted to make my comment a poll (like = agree, dislike = disagree), also please comment why - discussions would be good.
    In out society there are:
    - Social expectations for all (males, females, other)
    - Gender differences in most jobs
    - Challenges for people to be themselves and follow their dreams and passions.
    These are issues that should be addressed in some way or another? (agree or disagree, i don't mind, I'm just curious).
    On a side note, the only part of the video i question is "one is not born a woman but becomes one", i acknowledge it was a quote, my issue is not one of differences between males and females (as discussed by someone else), but rather what is it to become a woman? How could that possibly be defined? - again I'm happy for anyone to comment I'm just curious.

      This women doesn't understand that men and women are different in many ways. Like when she said its weird that her teacher told her she almost did push ups like a boy, and that is a compliment since men have better physical strength, and that is a fact

      im torn on how to reply to this, because what you've raised is a good point. I don't think she is ignorant of the fact men are physically stronger then woman, this is a generic fact. But then again most stereotypes have some factual basis which is how they have existed for so long.
      I think her point was more that when a stereotype was broken people should not be shocked but i acknowledge it was likely a compliment. I think someone could argue that this compliment could be negative to the males around, which could lead to some interesting responses? - thoughts?

    • @masonbritton3872
      @masonbritton3872 8 років тому

      You've raised some good points, I'm curious if you think the 'femenazis' as you say are representative of feminists generally, and even feminists you've met personally? - personally for me they ant, but our lives are different so it could be.
      I would say most men and woman strive for and want equality. If that is the definition which i assume is how most feminists describe equality, i would say most people are feminist. Then again if you define feminism as the rebelling against the patriarchy and male oppression, i wouldn't deny some people would still agree, but i don't think the vast majority would.
      I mean it's obvious whether or not someone is a feminist id dependant on how it is defined, but i guess i don't think 'femenazis' are representative of people.
      In response to the transgender acceptance, I'm guessing we share similar views, but who knows. There are a lot of trans people that are not accepted, and personally i think people should be accepted regardless of their choices. I acknowledge it may be seen 'wrong' to encourage people to go trans and mental health may be a concern, a sense of self (sexuality included) is very important for mental health. So it seems they could be stuck between a rock and a hard place, they either remain in what they perceive is the wrong sexuality and are accepted, or they do what they believe and often are lacking the support and acceptance from others? - again I'm happy to be wrong I'm just curious on your thoughts?
      :)

    • @masonbritton3872
      @masonbritton3872 8 років тому

      dead mcred I actually really like this convo, so firstly thanks :)
      Im torn on how to answer this because i think we agree on most things, except we use the word feminism differently. I like to use it as inclusive of everyone wanting equality - which i know differs from a lot of what is on the internet. But i've never met a guy or girl that doesn't think men and woman should be payed equal for the same work, or think that men and woman should have the same opportunity
      There is often a very strong difference of option on whether this equality has been achieved. e.g. the often described mythical wage gap. It's clear people only look at averages, and decide woman are paid less due to life style choices. It's true there are laws against paying woman less for the same work so the pay gap is usually allocated to manager and 'boss' positions and lack of promotion. This is too contentious so i won't discuss it.
      However, the pay gap in elite sports is very clear, but this is due to the size of the supporters, on average there are more supporters for male sports then female sports. Is this gender based (sure), is there inequality (yes), but it is important to recognise it is not a pay gap due to someone failing to simply promote woman, it is simply because there is a larger fan base in male sports therefore male athletes make more money. - I would love your thoughts on how it could be resolved?
      The second thing you mentioned was based on the belief "femenazis make up the majority of feminism", i mean i don't have any stats but i have to believe most feminists want equality, unless you are referring to people on the internet then i think you may be right. But i think any extremist group naturally gains more popularity because it is so controversial, e.g. Isis, but i don't think they are representative of people not on the internet. - Thoughts?
      Finally on transgender, i struggle with this because i am a straight male, so i can't imagine what it would be like wanting to be female, and i have never sat down with someone who is trans. But society has recently deemed sex (born with) and gender (what you choose) to be different. I guess the heart of this trans issue seems to be whether it is okay for someones sex and gender to be different. My issue with this is the whole premise of gender, as if what i like doing should change anything. For example if i wanted to wear makeup, a dress, long hair, and other things stereotyped with being a woman - gender - i should have that choice.
      Im curious if u agree with that firstly, then i guess why should the sex i'm born with make a difference to what stereotypes (gender) i choose to follow.
      If we refer to changing sex rather then gender, i think people should be allowed to change their body as they see fits, but i think there needs to be an age limit on this - which exists in most of the world - what age i believe this should be i have no comment.
      You also mentioned a fear or bed people - perverts, peds etc - i struggle to see how claiming transgender would help their defence.
      also curious on ur thoughts, There are a lot of videos online where trans people explain what it is like, i remember a teenager who felt like a male in a female body, dressed and looking like a male, and it clearly seemed irrational to say they should go to a female bathroom - which I'm mentioning because i know it's contentious and i love hearing your thoughts.
      :)

      @masonbritton3872 8 років тому

      As always you raised some good points, and in the absence of time because i have work soon i'll keep my reply short. :)
      I mean i don't think we'll agree on the number or percentage of 'man hating' feminists which is totally fine, but u did raise an interesting point about there never seem to be woman pointing out how crazy the 'man hating' idea is. However that may be because the idea is often to stupid for people to get involved in. There are a small but loud group of guys that dislike anything with the title feminism, and project the idea that all males are bigoted and hate the idea of equality. I don't think there are many guys stating how stupid 'some' of the hate is. Idk just an interesting comparison.
      I will comment on the sex vs gender part later due to time.
      In regards to the police, a criminal act is criminal regardless of ones gender. For a bad example, it makes no difference whether or not it was a male or female abusing a child, so i struggle to see how claiming trans would be a defence. Even if it was it would be destroyed in court - i'll assume your laws are similar to mine - in Aus, ever law that applies to males applies to females, and in extension would apply to trans so it couldn't ever be a legal issue. - thoughts? But i do understand how there may initially be a fear of opening up a can of worms.
