    the first time I watched this video, I thought "no way"....way too many steps. after the 3rd time, though, it seemed possible. I made up a numbered list for each step and numbered a corresponding plastic baggie, dumping removed parts into each as I went along. I had the head resurfaced, just to be sure ($100). I just finished the job and the car started right up! the only glitch was that I got an error code for the MAF sensor...easy to find that I'd missed hooking that one up (it's not visible looking down at the engine, and the connector was dangling alongside the injectors, masquerading as one of them). thanks SANE for giving me the confidence and guidance to do this job myself!....my local mechanic wanted $3500; it cost me less than $200 (including having the head resurfaced and replacing the head bolts).

      Lol you have that list lying around anywhere... I have a sneaking suspicion my head gasket might have a small leak... I'm gonna do an early oil change... Just threw new fuel pumps and ignition coils/ spark plugs on mind... But I noticed my coolant level was slightly low each time which has never been an issue before

      @@seanbouker Sure sounds like a head gasket leak. Go on eBay you can find a head gasket kit for around $50. Hopefully you will not have to have the head shaved. If the head it self is beyond .002 of being flat, you will have to take it to a machine shop. My final torque of the head bolts was 62 FT LBS. My Prius is still running well after reassembly back in May of this year.

    I just finished replacing the head gasket on my 2013 prius thanks to your video. I watched it half a dozen times before i started the job and know am glad i did. With out your video I don't think I would taken on the job, it took me about 3 weekends to do it, I did have an issue; I bout a new water pump from Amazon for about 90.00 dollars that turned out to be a bad unit(the car was over heating) so I bout a second one, but this time I bought it from the dealer and once I replace it, the car stopped over heating. The car is working great now. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    1:45:15 He is WRONG!!! DO NOT put any RTV next to the upper little holes like he does. The workshop manual for this car says to put it ONLY on the sides. No where near that little hole like he does. Best case scenario that will block off only half that port when it pushes it out. Worst case scenario it will block it off completely and no oil will get to the camshaft bearing = a fail not too far down the road. Either way it's bad.

    Thanks so much for this detailed video! I just completed my 2015 Prius head gasket replacement successfully. The biggest snag I had was needing to buy a better impact wrench to remove the crank bolt and then making sure the proper orientation of the timing tensioner. Also, having faith that the tensioner would release correctly from it's clip upon start up made me nervous. In the end it all worked out! Thanks again.

    ALERT! This car contains a boobytrap that can add hours or DAYS to your repair: The 17 gold colored head bolts that hold the cams to the engine head are Torque To Yield (TTY) and should not be reused because there is about a 50% chance of breaking one off in the engine. None of the manuals will tell you this and the replacements are not included in any of the rebuild kits. We had to order through a Toyota dealership so have a bolt extractor handy before torqueing these to 20 ft lbs.

    Thanks for taking the time to post this video. After watching 3 times I felt I could do it with attention to organization of parts. Your sense of humor helped calm me down when I would get impatient for the job to be over. What I realized while half way through was that you took time out to set up a camera to record these steps. With my hands covered in oil and grease I would not even think about setting up a camera to help others. When I got to the step of putting the camshaft rod carrier on top of the cylinder head my heart dropped because while it was in place it was wobbling. In your video you mention that it will rest on rockers in the up position (or something like that). Maybe next time mention that wobbliness is normal and will not impede the process of tight sealing the carrier to the head. I really appreciate your dedication to helping others perform automechanics and saving them lots of money to the dealership. In my area the dealership recommended a refurbished engine and installation to the tune of $11,000.

    One thing I've noticed that I really find value in from your videos vs others, is that you actually show taking components off even if you yourself think it's braindead obvious on how said part is removed. Example, the timing chain. Other videos reference the 2 bolts holding the bracket on, and then they say to remove the two plastic brackets and then you can remove the chain... Next shot shows the chain off, but the bracket at the top is still on, as if the chain magically came off without taking that off. You actually acknowledge these mini-steps for me and my idiot brethren out there. This is just one of many examples i've seen so far. I also have to note that you take the time to tell us where the "oh shit" problems can occur if you don't pay attention (I.E Gaskets falling out, etc).

I had the head resurface by professional but unfortunate the engine block have micro line it doesn't feel like a crack I thought it was a stain from cleaning them with carbon cleaner on cylinder 1 and 2 where the leak are, after I put everything back together steam still coming out from the reservior almost unnoticable.

    @saneauto I have a 2010 prius same color and it is having the same issues as yours. 1/3 of the way through changing the head gasket I was getting ready to pop off the timing chain cover but there was a bolt being blocked by a small pipe. This pipe was held by a 10mm bolt, as soon as it was loosened clear oil shot into the air. I can't tell if it was the ac compressor or another device. Please help me identify the part and how to re-pressurize the system.

    Its the little details that scare me like properly preping sealing surfaces and to use gasket cement or not and locking down overhead cam how does it work using paper towels. Flat glass plate surface preparation for head surface sanding brilliant . Are the sanding lines ok to leave or did the micro drill clean that up too. At 100 can per fill up saving vs my ford it hard not to consider doing a correct fix.

How did you manage to remove the bolt while making sure the engine does not turn? (and yeah, all pretty much only talk about how to pull it out).

    Hey great video, I just completed my head gasket repair myself, your video was a big help. I have one question, regarding the charging of the hybrid battery if you would be so kind as to answer. I put the car in maintenance mode to only run the gas engine and burp the coolant system of any bubbles, all seemed to go well; turned it off after. Started the car to drive it close around and it seems that the hybrid battery is only being used down one line or so and then it is charging it back to full. Is this normal and will adjust to using the battery level longer taking it down more and then switching to charge it? Or is there something that I need to do? Your input would be most helpful, I'm not very knowledgeable on that part.
    Thanks, Clark

    • @saneauto
      @saneauto  2 роки тому +2

      Ive never seen one go below one or two lines either. I think its normal. If you want it to fill all the way quickly find a big hill or mountain. come back down it in B mode. That will charge it up real full.

    • @creoleclark
      @creoleclark 2 роки тому +1

      Shouldn’t the system use down the fully charged battery several lines and then begin to recharge back up? My car only uses the charged battery slightly,a line or maybe two, then it recharges. If you think this is normal or will adjust the draining and charging over time then I guess I’m ok I just want to maximize the battery life. Thanks again for your feedback!
