Best song he ever did before he started writing pop songs.
One of the best intros ever.
Pat Benatar does a killer cover of this song.
💖💖💖Try "Ain't Even Done With The Night", "Cherry Bomb", "Crumblin' Down", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town" and "The Authority Song".
Oh my yes to all of the above !
Oh yes and add Tonight
Also does a great version of “Everyday” by Buddy Holly
Jack and Diane, paper in fire!😂
'ain't even done with the night'....so good!
This is a very underrated Mellencamp song. I wish more people would react to it. Great review!
This is from his Johnny Cougar days
Super intro! Perfect way to start an album!
Mellencamps early stuff is harder rock. If you want another edgy rock song from him, listen to a song called (Play Guitar). Thanks for this reaction sir.
Larry Crane was Mellencamp's guitarist from 1976 to 1991. He left the band when he complained that Mellencamp was underpaying the band members, especially him, since he helped write, arrange, and produce most of the biggest hits of his career.
I sometimes think John Mellencamp and Don Henley are twin sons of different mothers.
@@mattpobursky850 Henley and Glenn Frey really screwed Don Felder. You're right.
John’s nickname is “the little bastard”. At the end of the 80s, John was huge, one of musics biggest acts, so he gave each band member a bonus check for a million dollars. Him and Larry grew up together and Larry took it as a slight, said he wanted a 2 million dollar bonus. After years of recording & touring together it all came to a head and the incident with the bonus check was the final straw.
Such a great song
My fave by him.
This takes me back to my El Camino cruising days! Play Guitar, Rain On The Scarecrow, Dance Naked & Check It Out are good ones too.
“What If I Came Knocking” is 🔥🔥🔥
One of Indiana's best..
I love John Cougar Mellencamp. His 70s stuff leans heavy on Springsteen's sound as a musical influence, in the 80s Mellencamp finds his own sound musically. Here the music sounds Thin Lizzy and Springsteen inspired.
It sounds like his early bandmates might've been listening to some Rush as well. Or some type of early progressive rock.
When this song first came out I bought the cassette and he blew us away review this whole album you will be amazed he was hard edgy rock and pop fantastic
The beginning of this song sounds like one of those old cop show theme music in the 80s, like Hill Street Blues or something like that.
Rockford Files
I never heard this great song!
You should check out his performance of this on American Bandstand. The story is - if you're performing on AB, you're lip syncing. Well, John had a problem with that. Basically, he had to lip sync or not perform. This was early in his career and doing AB was huge. So, he agreed to lip sync his way, and it was hilarious. Some interesting instruments were used!

And for comparison, here is a clip of John Mellencamp and his band actually performing that same song on Don Kirshners Rock Concert that same year (and killing it by the way). John Cougar Mellencamp - I Need A Lover (LIVE) 1980

Sweet!!!
He's got skills Biz. Kinda a radio guy though. This is 1 of my favorites by though!
Ive seen him live3 times . awesome shows all !
LOL on your commentary!!
The longest instrumental intro ever in a song
Love it!
Tonight’s the night is edgy and good
Early stuff Biz.
Crank it up! 💥
It’s a pretty dope song.🖖🏼
His earlier stuff is so much better IMO. His later stuff was very popular but I didn’t like it near as much. I mean his ‘79 and ‘80 releases. I think he was rather obscure prior to that.
Mellencamp's REAL hard rock is an album called Whenever We Wanted. Check out Love and Happiness song or Now More Than Ever. I always called that album Heavy Metal Mellencamp. lol
This does rock, his album "whenever we wanted" rocks similar to this. He does have a lot of cool tunes.
The intro is so long because John said that back then the band was first starting out and they hadn’t figure out yet how to make ‘that’ transition yet to the verse & chorus of the song so they just kept jamming until ‘it’ felt right. lol
A great tune ! Great reaction
Loved it when this came on the radio. Even better than Pat Benatar's version.
Epic intro
Pat Benatar covered this song. Made it a hit. John Cougar, as he was known as at the time, was an unknown at the time.
Yes, she did cover it, but the song was a hit on its own. It was his first hit. Now, that doesn't mean it was the sort of hit that breaks into top forty, but the kind that gets played on album oriented rock and roll stations. I remember hearing Cougar's version on the radio back when. I don't remember hearing Benatar's version on the radio. I had her record, so I heard it there, but never on the radio.
Cherry Bomb is a good one.
cougar but sure its been said . got ya a all Ga reactor coming up
I think was an attempt to move out of the more campy John Cougar phase, pushed on him by the record companies, into more of a serious rock band. He always had a really good band behind him and I think the second half of his career was much better.
Mellencamp was very pop rock, kinda down home rock music. Sounds good to me LOL.
Word of advice. Don't hit the highway. It will hurt your hand.
Some of those lyric lines he had to fit in were lengthy.
This was his break through hit, one of his better songs. Try R.O.C.K in the U.S.A.
Johnny Cougar
He did his best stuff when he was John Cougar.
I'll take Paper In Fire and Rain On The Scarecrow over Jack and Diane and Hurts So Good everyday of the week:)
Hey .. there's no lyrics
You are no longer a "Rocker in Training!" my friend Biz!!!! So proud of you. His only other great song is "Play Guitar" ... "forget all about that macho sh** and learn how to play guitar!"
Check out : Cherry bomb, paper and fire, Crumbling down, R O C K in the USA
