“Ain’t Even Done with the Night”, “R.O.C.K. in the USA” and “Pink Houses” are excellent.

John Mellencamp is from Indiana, he's pretty big here and is from the Bloomington area, I believe. I love most of his music, this is one of my favorites. "Jack and Diane" is a good one also, "Pink Houses", "Wild Nights", "Authority Song", etc...! Definitely a rabbit hole worth going down.

Long Intros, multiple tempo changes, multiple instrumental solos, multiple instruments used, drums, guitars, keyboards, horns, strings/violins, great vocals and lyrics, Great LIVE SHOWS. We call this style of music.... Classic Rock, and it's many variations.

One might say John Mellencamp is the quintessential All American Rocker from the middle of America. All the necessary elements to make some great Classic Rock. Try his 'Little Pink Houses" next on his list.

He went from being John Mellencamp, then... John Cougar, then... John Cougar Mellencamp, then back to John Mellencamp early in his career. We all knew who he was/is now.

"I Need A Lover" was the first John Mellencamp song I remember hearing on the radio, way back when. That's when he went by the stage name John Cougar. That introduction is quite spectacular, evoking the wall of sound tableau Bruce Springsteen perfected, right down to the piano licks and the backing vocal harmonies. The instrumentals are top notch. Pat Benatar covered the song on one of her early albums. I saw him open for Heart in 1981 or thereabouts. He was great live. Mellencamp's later work turned his songs towards less elaborate arrangements, "Hurt So Good", for example, was a gigantic hit for him a year or two later, followed by "Jack & Diane". But it was his 1983 album, Uh-huh, that turned him into a top tier rock star, placing three singles in the top-forty -- "Pink Houses", "Crumblin' Down", and "Authority Song". And his 1985 follow up album, Scarecrow, placed three singles in the top-ten -- "Small Town", "Lonely Ol' Night", and "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.". Good stuff.

Not covered. They had the same management and they both were given the song and released nearly the same time

@@johntarnowski9086 Benatar's version is a cover , Mellencamp is the songwriter and the song was first released by him in 1978 on the album A Biography when he was going by the name Johnny Cougar. It was not released in the U. S.. In 1979 it was released on his album titled John Cougar. The song was covered and released as the debut single in 1979 by Pat Benatar for her album In The Heat Of The Night.

The old Houston Apollos of the CHL used this as their pregame intro music while taking their hot laps. One player in particular, Alex Tidey, would be first on the ice and just ripped through his laps almost in time with the music.

He released this song when he was called John Cougar. I think the execs didn't like his real last name "Mellencamp."

  • @Rob-eo5ql

John said the long intro happened because back when they were recording this he & the band were real young, just starting out. They didn’t know how to transition from intro to the first verse so they just kept playing until it felt right. lol

Loved your comments on this, JM. I have a daughter and 2 daughters in-law. I’m not sure what got into JM putting this song out. His catalog is good. I’m 64. As young men we were encouraged to write this kind of thing as a letter, to never send it, and eventually burn it. That would have been good advice for JM. Hey-you have the same initials!

Just a straight ahead rock banger. I always thought that the macho rock persona he had in this is just bravado designed to cover up his insecurities and whatnot but who really cares? The song kicks butt and even though he has many, many great songs in his catalogue, this one always hit me the hardest.
