As an Italian, I can confirm that in the past we have utilized our local herds of mountain elephants to develop and test an advanced type of arrow, which proved to be particularly effective against them. This is 100% historically and geographically accurate.

The Genoese archers were famed throughout the Apennine peninsula and beyond for their ability to hold their own against cavalry.
First developed by Assassino Di Cavalli, Genoese archers utilised a new, larger crossbow capable of firing much heavier bolts suitable for piercing the armour of mounted knights.
When in 1582, a great stampede of Alpine Elephants ( thought by some experts to be caused by an avalanche in the mountains) threatened Milan, it was the Genoese Crossbows, able to pierce the elephants thick hide that saved the city.

It's weird to me that they didn't do better in this test. If you out mass your enemy they do very well. I like that they can kill a small group of knights or light cav without too much trouble. That saves a lot of res from teching into spears to counter cav civs
