I do remember the scene where the guy who joined the Navy came back on leave, and he didn't just seem to fit in anymore.

The movie actually has some great seams of thematic depth too, with the skinheads and vietnamese being perceptual mirror images of one another

"How should we feel about this movie"?????? Imagine an artistic movement based on independent thought, now asking this question.

I just did,. How do we who claim to ascribe to individual thought justify the question of how we should collectively think about something? Is that a better rewording for you?

Nobody has purely independent thought, unless they’ve lived in isolation all their lives. Maybe you should define “independent thought,” because we are constantly influenced by others.

Romper Stomper not only wasn't an accurate representation of skinhead culture, it was a completely inaccurate portrayal of Melbourne. Footscray does not look like that, Footscray has had its issues but it's not a hive of stupid racists. It was the last inner-city neighbourhood in Melbourne to be yuppified and it has a fascinating history, amazing local culture and a bloody good footy team. Why they shot scenes that were supposed to be there on the other side of the city and hope nobody noticed was flat out insulting.

They do the same thing with Houston. Watch that movie X from a cpl years back and Houston looks Nothing like Houston. That's pretty common I think, but it's very annoying

I lived in footscray at the time and yes they had romper stompers and yes some were like this. You didn't want to cross them. I wore an old military coat, and they left me alone.

16 Years of Alcohol is the my favorite skinhead movie. also i don't categorize this as a skinhead film. it's a neo-nazi film.

Like i was saying, it's a Nazisploitation movie. If I called it a skinhead movie, that's. It really what I meant. I'll check out the movie you mentioned, I've never heard of it

@@thepunkrockreview you never called it a skinhead movie. i could tell that YOU are a true skin even if you might not self identify such. real recognizes real. at times others would state something that felt generalized. I'm not trying to rip on anyone. skins have never been portrayed accurately.... are skins somewhat prone to violence, yes but anger is a gift. I'm not some do nothing hippy. if i see some atrocious situation/action i can't pretend everything is fine i have to intervene and make things right.. sorry, for my rambling comment

The film itself is good. I don't think there will ever be an accurate film about punks or skins etc. I always felt the violence and peer pressure was a legit part of the bonehead experience. The parties in the film are extremely legit. Also, we didn't really have the anti Asian contingent in the US when this came out, there surely is now. I knew WP skins like this in the day. I feel the story of Hando & Davey suffered from the jealous over the strange gf angle, and was the worst part of the film. The end is accurate to me, the drowning & stabbing. As everyone who watched this in the day knew, it was an anti-bonehead film. A bunch of us Trad skins went to see this in the theatre, and no one was hyped to go kill, kill, kill. The way that G. Wright got them all together pre-film and worked them into acting like a gang was a thoughtful thing to do. I felt sad for Davey and avenged for Hando. I also recognized some Trad skin groups acting similar, back then as a teen. You can say it's a WP movie, but I feel it's a semi true telling of how the scene was in the 80s/90s. Extremely violent & senseless in general. Nonetheless I enjoyed this film, esp Russell Crowe drinking milk in his tighty whiteys after the party 😅 but that's a personal thing. I hate the painted on tattoos the most. I think Russell Crowe was brave to do this film, prior he had played a young gay man. He was really looking to grow as an actor. Finally, I was wearing Fred Perry, bombers and following lace code way before this came out. If it informed idiots, that's just a sad side effect. 😢

There's a curious tendency to vehemently disavow art that isn't explicitly moralistic, representing values that the viewer espouses. Perhaps saturation in explicitly political art can lead to people developing an expectation that any art they encounter should be an easily digestible political statement. The problem with this is that it undermines the freedom of the artist to pursue the aesthetics, the poetry, the raw energy, of the art, without being the political mouthpiece of the culture.
Not all art is propaganda. Anton Chigurh got away with it. Does Cormac McCarthy endorse his actions? Do the directors of slasher films support murder?
Australia is extremely cosmopolitan. Especially Melbourne.

Having a negative critique against an artists work doesn’t disavow their artistic freedom. The movie was already made. Criticism cannot affect it now.
Even in general, negative criticism won’t take away some one’s freedom to make an asinine mess of a movie that aims to destroy the sanctity of multiple communities.
