Agreed @glenfiddich7635 ! I like to joke that the small non-metal team is like a little skunkworks group that does everything they can to keep the oldest Macs still running 😅

@@Mr.Macintosh Please, please, PLEASE help to enable hardware-acceleration and wifi in MacOS Mojave on stock 2009-2011 "silverback" iMacs. (BTW, note that an alternate source for DMGs will have to be found if wayback-machine remains down.) Mojave is the last OS for 32bit apps, and the last that can run inside a fast HFS+ partition, and the community should be trying to fork Mojave by this point to facilitate running it on everything. (Its ability to run Parallels Desktop 18 also means that Windows11 and many current Linux distros can be run in hypervirtualization while sharing common drive areas, meaning it's even better than APFS at preventing wasted partition space.)

I use my early 2009 imac (9,1) as secondary computer for surfing the internet. This mac still has the original HD so updating is very slow. But I had no problems installing 14.4.1 after following the steps you recommended with the OCLP. It seems to hang when installing but, in fact, it is just slow. Amazing how this computer is still usable in 2024! Thanks OCLP team and to you, Mr.Macintosh.

The early-2009 was the last "blackback" iMac model. The ones that still have problems are the mid-2009-to-late-2011 "silverbacks" (the last DVD models).

@@Mr.Macintosh Mr. Macintosh, could you please consider creating an easy how to video for swapping to another GPU in OCLP installs? I have an issue with this (GTX 680 macEFI to RX 580 with new reconstructed BootRom with EnableGOP 1,4 injected) as well, but I see MacRumors flooding with this issues lately. While I was on OCLP 1.4.2 I was having a hard time updating my MacBookPro9,2 to Sonoma and Ventura. I had an SSD installer and my hard drive cable ripped slightly so I had to order a new one, I ended up being able to install Monterey via USB, then use the Ventura installer app to update, and then after I installed 1.4.3 I managed to use OTA updates to get Sonoma installed. It runs pretty smoothly with 4GB RAM but I do plan on upgrading to 16GB of RAM.

2012 MBP 9,1 OS 14.4.1 OCLP 1.4.2 thought this update was fine - no problem, done and dusted in less than 5 minutes.
2012 Mini 6,1 OS 13.6.6 OCLP 1.4.2 hated it. Many hours later, finished migrating user data from backup after complete clean install of the OS, and back to 1.4.2.
*Always* have multiple backups and a USB OCLP and OS installer before hitting go on these updates - be it OS or OCLP.
That said, Thank you OCLP team, Dortania, Mr. Macintosh and community for all this incredible work. Amazing expertise and focus.

Thanx for all the great videos. My MacPro 5,1 WiFi/BlueTooth board stopped working quite some time ago after the an OCLP upgrade. WiFi was working fine but BlueTooth was nonfunctional. I tried installing root patches again, no change. I was hoping this upgrade might revivie it but no change. I found a post recommending an NVRAM reset. I opted for the Terminal command and rebooted. Success…My BlueTooth came alive and I was to pair my MagicKeyboard and MagicTrackpad. I don’t know if my BT issue was a fluke but I’ve seen very few references to BT issues and a NVRAM reset as a solution. I went thru numerous OCLP and MacOS upgrades finally ending on Sonoma after the OCLP 1.4.3 upgrade. I ‘d like to hear your thoughts.

A problem with MacBook Pro 2014, made an updated USB to 1.4.1, for upgrade 14.4.1 and used it to upgrade an external SSD with no problems. Then used it to upgrade the laptop listed above. All went well but hung up at 25% of the restart. Tried a couple of times with no good results. Put into safe mode and restarted. It finished went into a normal restart and opened up to the home page. Opened up Open Core and went into Post-install root patches. They needed to be reinstalled. Everything is up and running fine. You ask why I did not just do a normal apple upgrade. I have had problems with them in the past, along with twice losing my hard drive on a clean install. Another related or unrelated problem with Chrome and Yahoo mail. Yahoo mail will lock up and freeze up the entire computer. Does the same thing on the 2014 and 2020 m1 in 14.4.0. Thanks for all you do and Open Core.

Hello. I have a Imac 2011 and I have installed Sonoma through the Legacy 1.4.3 patcher I think what you and all the others have done is great job for older users like myself. I have installed Logic Pro 10.7.9 on my machine and when playing or recording the playhead is not there, on one forum somebody mentions it may have something to do with metal or nonmetal. Do you know if there is a fix for this?

You bet! with OCLP 1.4.3 installed you can upgrade or update to Sonoma 14.4.1. IF you need to upgrade from a previous os like Monterey or Ventura you need to create a OCLP Sonoma boot disk. Upgrading through software update is not supported.

I have never used any mac until picking up a mid 2010 iMac 6 weeks ago. (£20) It took me 4 days to get in after the previous user didn't log out. I had High Sierra on the same HDD as Big Sur and later systems. Even though I'd converted HS to APFS, its file system is still very different from BigSur and later. They don't play well together. In fact, every time I opened HS I got a warning to that effect. For example, HS was always sticking its own icon into the bootloader for BigSur and later. I finally deleted it. Good riddance.

My 2007 iMac 20” is fully updated and working well. At a max of 6Gb of memory, it takes a bit to boot - but not bad. If you leave it running - it comes back to life very quickly. I use it for running no more than 2 or 3 apps at a time. I rarely go into swap drive. It runs well enough for web browsing and the iWork apps. I haven’t tested the coming back from sleep. That’s the only place it’s been weak in the past.
I have a 2012 iMac 21.5”. This machine is a heavily worked machine. The only problem is the graphics goes bonkers if the screen saver goes dark.

I’m using Ventura 13.6.6 on late 2013 iMac 21.5” (integrated graphics). I upgraded straight from Catalina (the last supported OS) a few months ago. No major issues encountered-just the occasional Bluetooth weirdness. I could have gone to Sonoma but hesitated because it’s still having the kinks worked out, I think. Overall great experience getting this 10+ year old iMac up to a supported macOS version. Only the Intel graphics need patching.

I upgraded to Ventura 13.6 yesterday on my Macbook Air 6,2 (Early 2014, 8GB/256GB) coming from Catalina. Everything went well on the first try and fresh install.
I still had a bootcamp partition with Windows 10 on it before using OCLP but it kept that partition safe. Now the EFI has both OCLP macOS disk boot and Windows 10 :)
    Thanks for your detailed guide!
Edit: After 1 day usage, i can say this OS is really fast, no lags or whatsoever. I did not expect this :)
Also, everything works fine like Control Center, widgets and even the animations are smooth.

Hello @JonathanJChua thank you for the suggestion. I want you to know that I've really thought about this a lot. I totally understand that while the screen recording is very easy to see, sometimes it is very static and does not have very much life to it. I try to split the time between setting up all the devices, installing and testing + filming and then editing along with getting the information out there as soon as possible. I have done camera over videos in the past and many commented that they could not see what is on the screen. Maybe I can find a way to split between the 2 so you can actually see the computer & then switch to screen when I start going over some of the details. Thank you again for watching!

I have a Mac Pro 2010 with a AMD Radeon Pro WX4100 card and I have several boot drives/volumes - mostly SSDs for booting. I can get Monterey, Ventura, High Sierra, and even Snow Leopard to work with latest OS versions and OCLP 1.4.3 but can't get BIg Sur to do the same. For some reason, the menu bar won't load/Metal video driver won't load (when I check system report or iStat Menus) despite it being "built-in" to Big Sur. The funny thing is when install an Apple ATI 5770 card and root patch, Big Sur does work. I am downfounded. Somehow Big Sur broke with the 1.4, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.3 OCLP cycle. I also tried reverting to OCLP 1.3 but that doesn't seem to work either (when it used to). Mr. Macintosh or anyone - what do you think is causing BIg Sur to not work anymore in my configuration.

Help! I just updated my 2009 MacBook Pro form 14.3 to 14.4.1. I went according to all the instructions, have the new Legacy Patcher applied, but now I can’t use my trackpad and keyboard, not even with a USB hub! I had the mouse and keyboard problem before, ever since i upgraded to Sonoma, so the easy fix was always to use a USB hub and external mouse and keyboard until i applied to legacy patcher. But now the USB hub and mouse do not work anymore. Is that a known problem? The trackpad and keyboard still work for the login screen for the password, but as soon as i am logged in it all stops. I can see the legacy patcher popping up and asking to be installed but i cannot confirm. Neither with internal trackpad nor USB hub and mouse. That used to be possible in previous versions. What to do?

That you for all your superb videos. Here are my experiences:
I have five macs running on Sonoma 14.4.1, one MacBook pro, one Macbook Air and one MacBook are working flawless. Just with two iMacs which are upgraded with modern wireless cards and metal compatible graphic cards there are always problems. The Macbook pro late 2014 updated to OCLP 1.4.3 with any issue. The iMac 12,1 (mid 2011) which ran without problems on 14.4.1 and OCLP 1.4.2 did not boot after updating OCLP but showed a kernel panic and this 🚫 on a white screen. I restarted with my OCLP 1.4.2 installer disk changed the refi boot back to 1.4.2a nd it ran again. The root patches worked and are now on 1.4.3, so the efi boot file from 1.4.3 is to blame.
Similar problem on my iMac 11,3 (mid 2010) which is also updated with modern wireless and a metal-compatible card. Since early Sonoma days the Open Core boot never worked when I did create it on this very machine, It always stuck at one third of the boot bar. I then made a boot version on another iMac and ported it to the 11,3 iMac. It started without Wifi but it made the full boot. I then entered the necessary kexts manually via OCAuxiliaryTools because in this boot section would be the standard configuration (the old wifi card) and not my new one. Everything worked as long as I didn’t update the OCLP boot. But since 14,4 & 14.4.1 I lost Wifi, I cannot activate the wifi switch. What is amazing: With my working alternative boot build I can boot up but then cannot activate wifi. And with the original boot build by OCLP 1.4.2 I cannot boot, but when I boot in safe mode I have wifi. In safe mode it also tells me that the Windowserver had a kernel panic. Still unsure whether I should try 1.4.3 on this machine at all!
Can you tell me what is wrong or lead me to somebody who has an idea? This would be really appreciated.

Hello @walterkohler9035 thank you for your well detailed and thoughtful reply on your install experiences. This is exactly why I need to bring some iMacs into the testing fold. The problem is they are just so damn big! At least with all the laptops, mini and small 2013 Mac Pro I can manage the space. Not to say I can't figure out a way to make this work. I am defiantly thinking about it now. What I would like to find out is what is actually preventing boot and what is causing the Mac to get stuck on boot. I've been able to figure out issues like this in the past but I needed a unit that had the problem to help reproduce it and again is why I need some iMacs. I went ahead and updated through software update and had some issues. It seemed like even though I had already updated to Opencore legacy patcher 1.4.3.
It didn't take after the OS installed through software update. Once I booted into macOS 14.4.1 there were driver issues, almost like opencore wasn't really updated. If I remember correctly upon initial boot into mako S 14.4.1 I believe opencore legacy patcher had reverted to 1.4.2. It took a while to go through the process of updating To 1.4.3 and installing the post install patches to get everything working. At least on my system it didn't break anything to do it this way. It was just a long way of getting it to work. I would recommend not using software update for a jump this big, it may be fine on incremental updates but it did not work very well in this instance. I would follow the recommended path of creating a bootable USB with the particular operating system You want to install and go that route. It would alleviate the Issues faced Doing it this way? Though it was a good learning experience. What system are you running and I hope this helps.
