And what MacOS would be worth trying? I know it's crazy but hey, whatever.

Have a couple questions. Upgrading a 2009 Mac Mini with 8 GB RAM, two internal HDs (1 SSD, 1 HD), now on El Capitan. Questions: 1) Does this config use metal or non-metal? Does it matter? 2) I’m assuming it would not be advisable to try to go all the way to Sequoia. Which would you feel is the sweet spot os version to install on this config? 3) Does this work like we d/l the latest patcher and then you select the os version I want to upgrade to? If not, how to select? Thanks!!
1. Non-Metal, cuz if i remember it right a 2009 Mac mini is using a Nvidia 9400M Graphics. Only a 2012 or later mac are using Metal Accelerated Graphics. Is it matter? Yes. Non-Metal Accelerated Graphics always having problem (minor like graphical glitching or even major problem like when load a video in Apple TV with Non-Metal Graphics in MacOS Sequoia make the whole mac freezes) with MacOS above High Sierra. 2. Big Sur is the best? But it's EoL already. Better go to Monterey. 3. Idk
Question 1 and 2 are already answered. Question 3: best option would be the USB method - see here: ua-cam.com/video/gmwneF_YsCA/v-deo.htmlsi=OQ5GEm-CutmHRJNV

Thanks for the nice video Jessie. I've subbed.
I have an antique 2009 Mac mini 3.1, Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz, Nvidia Geforce 9400, upgraded to an SSD and (unofficial) 8GB RAM. It runs Catalina (DosDude1 patcher) very well, but I use it these days for Ubuntu Mate 22.04 with free Pro registration, so supported till 2032.
But your video has me wondering. Can you use OCLP to load a more recent MacOS on an external SSD via USB? Yes, I know this would be even slower but I would be tempted to try it if it meant I could try it out without having to open the machine up again.
What do you think? Possible? And what MacOS would be worth trying?
I know it's crazy but hey, whatever.
@@frankfriedlos3721 yes that should be possible. I would try Big Sur first as it runs fine on my pre-2012 Macs

Have a couple questions. Upgrading a 2009 Mac Mini with 8 GB RAM, two internal HDs (1 SSD, 1 HD), now on El Capitan. Questions:
1) Does this config use metal or non-metal?
Question 3: best option would be the USB method - see here:
