Conrail Berea Tower

  • Berea Tower was still open in 1991. It was the junction of Conrail's former New York Central Water Level Route and Columbus, Ohio line and Cleveland Short Line (a downtown Cleveland bypass). The Columbus line and Cleveland Short Line were single tracked in those days through the interlocking and mostly beyond that as well. The train in this video is on track owned by Norfolk Southern today. The Columbus line and Cleveland Shortline (in the foreground)is CSX and is double track today.

    Excellent. I sure wish you could have got some video from inside the tower and maybe the interlocking machine (which I think was a pistol grip job) and the board. They would still let people in sometimes back then. I have some footage shot from inside Haley Tower in Terre Haute in 1994 as the operator was very friendly to me. Nonetheless, great footage of a still busy location, just no longer under local control.
