It should be noted how 4Kids altered even the vocal characterizations in their Yugioh adaptation. The Pharoah's voice is like Batman x Superman, whereas in the JP you can really hear his vulnerablity as a juvenile. And Joey is so much more tamer, when he is practically a gang member in the Japanese. Strangely, Pegasus is so similar in both tone and script to the Japanese he even keeps "Yugi- and Kaiba-boy". This is despite being that in a number of interviews the staff mention that they didn't reference the Japanese audio in the dubbing process.
hfdjksfhdks Dude, Joey *was* a gang member in the original. There is an arc in the manga where his old gang leader tracks him down, and tries to get rid of him.
That reminds me that Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Latin American Spanish dub which I watched growing up was dubbed in México, but it was dubbed using the 4Kids version as a base, but the cast was comprised of VA who had plenty of experience dubbing anime and they sounded really natural and I think they sound closer to the Japanese original. You got: - Yugi and Atem voiced by Irwin Dayaán, who voiced Dende in Dragon Ball Z and Anakin Skywalker from Episode II onwards; - Joey voiced by the late Carlos Íñigo, who actually voiced more comedic roles like Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life and professor Frink in The Simpsons; and - Kaiba voiced by Ricardo Mendoza, known for voicing Yamcha in DBZ, Aizen in Bleach and Dragon Shiryu in Saint Seiya.
Hell yeah. I remember all the soccer moms being terrified of yu-gi-oh and pokemon when I was growing up and I'm glad someone's putting together some content highlighting it. I've seen some braindead twitter takes about how the satanic panics were overblown and it's nice to see a well-researched video going over the cross section of 2000s media at the tail end of that cultural movement.
The west "got the series" fairly early, but their mishandling of the release schedule meant that it was lagging behind quite a bit. They literally already started dubbing GX while still finishing DM because they were so far behind(Which is why it is more likely that they simply didn't want to dub GX Season 4, rather than it being done in an effort to get 5DS out more quickly).
This was sooo insightful!! The cosplay is so killer. I really enjoyed this even as someone who doesn’t know a ton about anime. Your editing go crazy btw. Not only did you make great points, the editing made it even more fun to watch.
Great Analysis on censorship focused on Anime and Yu-Gi-Oh. I remember watching Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid and then totally forgetting about it. I heard about/was reminded of it hear and there, but this video makes me want to revisit it. Your channel is so underrated, but I'm loving the content. :))
Here in latin america.most anime was uncensored until it started being licensed from usa companies :/ thankfully we then had a whole channel that aired adult and later shonen anime SUBBED and ofc uncensored
What really killed 4Kids was that they never did an uncut release. Other companies like Funimation would make a censored tv release, than make an uncensored home video release, which worked wonders in an age where the medium was still big money. Already on thin ice with production companies due to their shady business deals, 4Kids was deemed obsolete and was cut out entirely while the rest of the industry thrived for years after they died.
16:23 dude it's so fucking funny that in trying to take away Zoisite's gayness, they just accidentally made em a trans woman instead, that's awesome good for her
If they had included the early manga in the (more well known) show, oh boy. Then again, they let some crazy violence slide but cover up benign queerness, so maybe by sheer dumb luck Yami burning some one alive in a burger joint would have gotten the pass some how. You know, if they just zoom out to a view of the outside of the restaurant at the last moment. You can see it right?
@@pocpic Kaiba does win though. Yu-Gi-Oh GX has his duel schooling system saving the world repeatedly. He's actually revolutionized the world. I think this is a metaphor for Mr Takahashi becoming more rich than he could have imagined for inventing legalized child gambling in Japan.
Kinda like how Zelda: A Link to the past was semantically censored because of religious elements and people say it was for the better due to potential outrage, even tho the christian church is allied with the good guys in the game, sending Link on the mission to get the master sword to drive back a potentially world ending demon incursion. People are kinda weird sometimes.
Anime dubs can get really weird. Yu-gi-oh dubs, and also most other 4Kids dubs, are barely even dubs in most cases, they are just diffrent shows entirely.(Yey, two cakes!) And the Sailor Moon dub is legendary for how absolutely weird it was. Like...they made the most well-known gays cousins, which is a topic still on razor's edge today. And then they proceeded to not censor certain scenes with Chibi Usa at all that would usually be censored back then and even now. Also, they turned a femboy that is at least once canonically topless in the show into a flat woman, we can add body positivity to the "weirdly hyperprogressive" list I guess?(In addition to predicting an unfortunate localization trend of recent years) I genuinely want to know what they were high on when they made that.
I always found it incredible that Sailor Moon's Neutral Spanish dub, which was done in Mexico in the late '90s, was pretty faithful to the original Japanese dub and that it even kept Haruka and Michiru's relationship intact. Despite Latin American being majority Catholic, most anime dubs kept all of the original content with barely any changes, the English dubs, on the other hand, always surprised me due to all of the changes they had Though I had to add that some anime like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and some others got dubbed into Spanish using the 4Kids version as a base
I didnt grow up with Yugi Oh Pokémon but Im old enough to remember the moral panic in the 90s when all Anime was sterotyped as violent and sexual by non fans

Also holy shit the edit to Kaiba's Dark Side of Dimensions speech in the dub

"Some lunatic dressed as Kaiba" i see no lunatic, only the real Kaiba
Howling with laughter at three mins fifty xD
Already off to a good start.
Not even ten minutes in, and already I love the editing in this video, it’s top tier amazing!

You’re absolutely correct. Conservatives in the 2000s bitched about anime.
Wait Americans didn't get the Yu-Gi-Oh dub till 2006?! I remember watching it when I was still in elementary school so 2002/2003.
Nah, we got it in 2000.
@Y2Kikii Oof you're right, Duel Monsters ran on WB in 2001 and ran until 2006. 🤦♀️

Always appreciate such a good reseach, great video
as well as editing! A lot of time was really devoted to it. I would like channels dealing with such problems to be more popular.

3:30 ok that gag was amazing😂
That Berserk edit was hilarious.
today I learned that Ronald Reagan created the shadow realm. that's a lovely sentence out of context lol

What people have forgotten was that 4kids was the conservative white backlash against the anime boom in America during the 90s.
This was a great video! It actually got me interested in checking out Yugioh!
Another great video of yours!
I got clickbaited by the cosplay and am I glad I was.
Oooh, so excited to see this in my sub box!
Hope you’re having a happy new year!
1:14 I recognize that voice anywhere (子安 武人) Takehito Koyasu!
Low-key your cosplay is amazing. This is now my only true head canon of what Seto Kiba would like in the real world.

To be fair, Kaiba’s speech makes no sense in japanese. How is a dueldisk supposed to end tribalism?
He's a Tech CEO weirdo.
He thinks his inventions are the advent of the new age. Steve Jobs was the same.
He wants it to act as a device by which the new power structure and world order forms.
It's basically libertarianism/unregulated capitalism.

love the cosplay
That kaiba change is horrible. Changing a story like that should be illegal
I see a berserk poster, I click
Kinda reminds me of Vivian in the original Paper Mario TTYD compared to the remake
ALL censorship is bad. If the work has content you dont wat to show, dont air tue show at all
Why do you sanitize the religious aspects that are the underlying cause in your script? Even though the footage makes it's role abundantly clear.
Conservatives seem forever willing to do devil work while calling other shit evil. Now i see why everyone went for subs so hard.
