It should be noted how 4Kids altered even the vocal characterizations in their Yugioh adaptation. The Pharoah's voice is like Batman x Superman, whereas in the JP you can really hear his vulnerablity as a juvenile. And Joey is so much more tamer, when he is practically a gang member in the Japanese. Strangely, Pegasus is so similar in both tone and script to the Japanese he even keeps "Yugi- and Kaiba-boy". This is despite being that in a number of interviews the staff mention that they didn't reference the Japanese audio in the dubbing process.

Hell yeah. I remember all the soccer moms being terrified of yu-gi-oh and pokemon when I was growing up and I'm glad someone's putting together some content highlighting it. I've seen some braindead twitter takes about how the satanic panics were overblown and it's nice to see a well-researched video going over the cross section of 2000s media at the tail end of that cultural movement.

There are some Isekai series that avoid this disturbing trope - such as “Didn’t I say to make my abilities average in the next life” - a series where slavery _does_ exist in the isekay world, but is not portrayed as okay, and is something that the protagonist does not participate in, but actively fights against. (It also has a female protagonist.)

How about an Isekai where the protagonist shows up, goes through the initial motions of an Isekai "story" (including the slavery/harem parts)... Only for a Conan/Ragnar/Uthred esque Barbarian hero (who is actually native to this world) to show up and up stage him at every turn, laying waste to enemy armies, liberating slaves and actually defeating the settings villainous Devil King instead of wasting time with harem antics. He's everything the protagonist isn't: decisive, strong, just and his skills are organic and don't come from fucking RPG mechanics (seriously that kind of setting would only make sense to a terminally indoors shut in with no skills or knowledge beyond vidya) And speaking of harems, this hero would actually sleep with women (grown women) instead of pussyfooting around the issue like a god damn impotent coward. The Isekai protagonist would naturally get upset that instead of having overwhelming power and owning a party of pseudo sex slaves, he's just a pack mule for this settings actual hero.

I could even make a much better story with this "isekai". More beautiful, deeper, meaningful, and clever.

Honestly everything you said about Kyo reminds me so much of Yeonggi from the manhwa I love yoo. And he's even a ginger to boot. There's nothing like Fruits Basket when it comes to characters but I think this manhwa comes really close because it's also so much about abuse in families. _spoilers_ He is a child of an affair and was only raised by his mother until she hung herself and he blames himself for it (he'd get told that it's his fault). His half brother never accepted him, called him a mistake and nobody, his step mother hates and abuses him and his father doesn't show him any affection and only reminds him time and time again he's a disappointment. He has a monologue where he says he's a bad person and anyone who gets close to him gets hurt like it happened to his love interest (handled it in Kyo-fashion). And his brother is jealous of him for being a kind, bright and sweet person who everyone gravitates towards while Yeonggi is jealous of his brother because he's part of the family and not ostracized. It's funny cause I didn't read it in a while but this essay brought it back into memory

THIS ^^^^^ I've been trying to find a way to word how I feel about this show, and I think this perfectly encapsulates it. SK8 is a queer show that happens to include skateboarding, and that's that. There's too much evidence to suggest that it could possibly be the other way around.

Weirdly enough I've started to notice a kind of emerging genre. It started when I watched Untamed on netflix. For those not in the know, its a Wuxia (sword fantasy) show that is based off of a comic that is explicitly about two men being in love. However due to censorship in areas like China, you can't show that in certain formats (to my understanding) so your left with shows about guys in the most ROMANTIC SITUATIONS IMAGINABLE but without them being able to explicitly say they are in love or show much, if any physical interaction. At most you see them call one another their 'partner' or 'eternal companion'. Regardless these shows end up still being popular, so you end with with these shows which........come off as queerbaiting to the 11th degree but don't ever go the distance to remain uncensored in all markets? I am not sure if Sk8 is the result of this as well but it seems to be very similar in terms of explicit romantic situations but not going the full distance to where it MAY get you in trouble if you wanted to sell it in some places.
