Dude Kenenisa Bekele struggled to beat 2:01:39 (I mean yeah came close at 2:01:41 and don't get me it's SUPER impressive, I was actually siced thinking he would break Kipchoge's PR) HOWEVER, Bekele kept rocking back and forth during his last 5K whilst Kipchoge was calm and smiling even when he broke Two hours which goes to show their muscular resilience difference. While Berlin 2018 might have been the greatest achievement, Vienna was such a great celebration of distance running with all the amazing world class runners as pacers. I loved that!
To me, Berlin was the most impressive of these three because Kipchoge ran the last 17km or so without any pacers, and the whole race without any artificial support. Breaking 2 and ineos were obviously impressive, but pulling off Berlin in the way he did really showed his toughness and fortitude.
i agree with the op. i know how massivly impressiv the sub 2 is and i would never dare to belittle this. but with everything, that was done in order to break it, meaning taking some of the best runners in the world as rotating pacemakers, giving him windblock for all but the last meters, even giving the few corners he had to run a steep curve (btw to that: it was estimatted to save ~20 sec), making a moving catering system with fluid intake controll, the sub 2 was as close to a labor situration as you can get on the street. the berlin marathon on the other hand was an open competition. non of the above mention things where in place. and he was running alone for such a long time. it was massivly impressiv. the most impressiv single marathon i have ever seen. if it is the most impressiv thing in long distance sport i have ever seen is not up to debate, but that would be a gib-fat-no... :D

@@TotalRunningProductions Hey can you do a video that talks about the similarities and differences between all the shoes that Kipchoge ran in? To see which one is the best running shoe.
All three are impressive in their own right, but I think his most impressive marathon is yet to come. Now that he has broken 2 with an unofficial record, I believe he will run an official record under 2 hours.
Breaking2 was the greatest because it was the first marathon that made everyone think "Wow, This is DEFINITELY possible" It was so close on its first attempt, and I felt that INEOS was that much improvement coming from a second attempt.
I agree with you all the way! Great job explaining each race! Your channel is very strong and an great running channel. As a runner, I enjoy your videos and hope you will continue giving great content!
I could make a controversial call that his greatest ever Marathon was the 2016 Olympic Games - his slowest ever. This is due to the intense mental and tactical nous he needed in order to win. There are some people that have run quick times but not everyone can transfer that actually into winning a race. However, I do think his best is yet to come. He will break the record again and cement his place in history as the G.O.A.T!
I completely agree with your analysis! The official world record in Berlin 2018 by a whooping 2 min 32 sec with a negative split even after all the pacesetters were burned out during the first half of the marathon solidifies Eliud Kipchoge's greatness.
13:03 correction: in Berlin he did not wear the Vaporfly 4%, he wore the Vaporfly Elite (Gen. 2) - However, apart from the midsole with that massive heel, they look really similar to the 4%. But these shoes were definitely better than the first gen Vaporfly Elites he wore at Breaking2 (obviously, Nike is not gonna be developing backwards)
All 3 were special. The Breaking 2 Project because everyone believed after only being 25 seconds away. INEOS 1.59 Challenge was special because they did it. And Berlin 2018 was special because he did it basically on his own whereas Bekele had to fight for it vs. Birhanu Legese.
October 12, 2019 where he went 1:59:40. This was just unbelievable, undoubtedly the most memorable one, being the first sub 2:00 marathon in history. There’s controversy about it right now, but this man did everything possible to work for this day, and he shattered the 1:59:59 Target
Great analysis. I agree with you. Though the ineos challenge was a great achievement, and the breaking 2 project at the time was truly an amazing performance!!
@@zstepohznrebrenhoirer7 Maybe, I guess we will have to wait till next marathon. But even 2 seconds would make a difference when we are talking about a world record, ask Bekele🤣
1:59:40 was the greatest and will likely forever be IMO. Why? Firstly, it took an already elite Kipchoge to get even better, better weather, better pacers, better track, better atmosphere to beat the previous similar breaking 2 by 45 seconds. Simply in a real marathon, it would be impossible to beat 2 hours. Ineos probably spent $10+ million on this project, and since the 2 hour mark has already been broken, unlikely anyone will spend that much money to recreate the perfect conditions to beat 1:59:40, so it may really stand for many years, decades in fact, like how nobody has tried to land on the moon again for almost 50 years.
Yes, he did it like 2-3 times. Also the video is not exact, saying twice he did all 2nd half alone. His last pacer, Boit, dropped after 25km (17km to the finish), that's closer to 1/3rd alone than 1/2.
Yes - telling him to run the "blue line" (not really a line in Berlin ... blue "triple dashes"?) or tangents as the other reply says. That is the shortest path and the one measured to the marathon distance.
I still have to go with the 2018 Berlin Marathon as his greatest. Of course his sub 2 hour race was history changing, but only being 1 min 39 sec over 2 hours without pacers for a lot of the race, without other runners to push him, and without being able to draft off of multiple runners, that race is extremely impressive.
Not gonna lie, after looking at that Berlin time and the elevation, turns, lack of pacemakers, etc. I still find that to be the most impressive. Seeing the big 1:59:40 on the clock is cool and all but if anybody has ever ran a cross country course then gone to a track and ran the same distance then they know just how much harder those imperfections and uncertainties are. Great analysis in this video, really provides some solid perspective on just how amazing Kipchoge is and how monumental each achievement was!
Berlin & 1:59 INEOS because the 1st one is the current official record done under the conditions you eloquently explained , while the 2nd one is the "Pandora's box opening" for marathoners to confirm it is now possible to run under the 2 hour barrier - and also for athletes of all kinds to look and push pass beyond limits & barriers. Eliud Kipchoge is truly an inspiration for the entire humanity to aspire something greater, something above & beyond our limits, with humility, hard work, discipline, commitment & principles.
Truly amazing if only there was a way to meet this guy... He has to be a superhuman and to do all this at 44 years old Makes me have no excuses truly remarkable, if somebody knows him spread the word that from one man to another I am in complete all and congrats.
Imho, Berlin is number 1 in his portfolio. 2hr is a major psychological landmark, unthinkable pace, but.. there is no other significance to the timing, come to think of it. Performed in a controlled environment (given, with hightened pressure). But 2:01:39, which he achived rather casually, even effortlessly, is truly outstanding. Similarly to his London performance.
I definitely agree with you, but pay attention that the Monza course is not perfectly flat as you think. I ran a 10k race every year in that circuit and I can assure you that it is not the fastest race in Italy. It has a little downhill and an uphill before the “Variante Ascari” that can be very stressful if done every 5 km like Eliud did. Even the main straight is slightly uphill...I wouldn’t define the Monza circuit as completely flat. By the way, keep up the fantastic work you’re doing, I love your channel!
Totally agree, Berlin 2018 was the greatest performance, he has a Sub 2 hour in him at Berlin, in fact I reckon he would have cracked it had he run there this year, he would have left Bekele in his wake.
1:59:40 INEOS challenge was the greatest. Kipchoge went into this race better prepared with lessons obtained from Breaking 2 and 2018 Berlin Marathon. He said..."when i went to Monza, i was like a new boxer stepping into the ring for first time and didnt know what to expect..." He optimized on experience and delivered an astonishing sub 2 hr record. Secondly this race was the most talked about event, got the attention and the world stopped for 1:59:40 to watch him. It was one of the most emotional races i have ever witnessed...I cried when i saw Eliud cross the finish line smiling and celebrating..
ELUID KIPCHOGE is the best in all the three forms... But as you suggest, I too would agree foe Berlin Marathon to be the most impressive. He has made to believe that NO HUMAN IS UNLIMITED. Thanks for inspiring all of us
Appart from all factors you mention: being given the hydration bottles in the hand without having to mate a smooth but "forced" apoach to the right side of the road & slow down a bit to grab it (and nace you change your pace) I'm convinced must have had an efect of some 16sec-20sec.
I think this guy is the greatest of all times all marathoners dream about the 2 hrs mark. Now the women can go for the sub 2:05 time welcome to the world of elite runners . From 2:08:13 in NYC till now time my dream has been realized and I can pass with a smile on my face . Knowing dreams come true. Enjoy the run 👌👍we are all proud of them
I agree, Berlin was without a doubt the most impressive performance of the three. The other two events were certainly amazing, but there is a part of me that wishes that the two hour mark was first broken in one of the major marathons. One of the most beautiful things about a distance race is the lack of control of the environment in so many ways. The greatest runners run the greatest races showing up on race day with so many unknowns their heads, and as the event unfolds the great athlete continuously fills in those unknown variables and hopefully solves the winning equation for that day. Eliud Kipchoge clearly is an athlete who has solved that winning equation many times in the past, and I believe he will continue to do it for some time in the future. Will he break two hours in a major marathon race? If he doesn’t, somebody will, in due time. That’s how the evolution of the sport works. The two sub-two hour events were examples of event backers and promoters pushing the evolution of that distance in an unnatural manner, like a genetically engineered race. In my opinion, there should be no race or event where one athlete is the absolute center of the universe. That is exactly why Eliud’s times for the two controlled events are not officially recognized. There is so much more that I could say and I’ve already written too much. My last comment is, we recognize the great warriors, but we don’t build cities around them.
Bekele is a hit or miss. He is inconsistent. So I wouldn't put my money on him. Marathon is all about mental grit, THEN the physical aspect. I've known people that train a month to run a marathon but have a sharp mental focus allowing them to overcome the physical pain. That's Kipchoge 100%
Great video and analysis as always and I completely agree with you TRP. The Berlin Marathon 2018 was Eliud's most impressive performance. The fact that it was warmer than what is considered ideal and it was sunny, which would have made it more difficult, the elevation gain of the Berlin course, the fact that he ran most of the second half completely on his own and negative split that second half. Also the Nike Vaporfly 4 % that he wore in Berlin 2018 are closer to an out and out racing shoe with the least advantage being given to the runner, unlike the custom made Breaking 2 shoes and the Alphafly that he wore for Ineos, which both give a greater advantage in terms of increased performance and efficiency. Don't get me wrong, Breaking 2 and Ineos were incredible performances but they were both very assisted, with the technology of the shoes, drinks being handed to him and pacers coming in and out of the race throughout the whole race. So yeah, Berlin 2018 his most impressive Marathon I think as well 😊☀️🏛🏙🏃🏿♂️🇰🇪
Eliud Kipchoge visited uncharted territory during Breaking2. Apart from the physical preparation, it required courage and mental fortitude to go there first. In Berlin during the second half of the race Eliud Kipchoge demonstrated his ability to race solo, against time and in imperfect conditions. He set the world record half-unassisted, so to speak. Indeed, the Berlin world record is a great achievement, but breaking the 2-hour barrier in Vienna sets a new standard and a way forward to an under-two-hour marathon world record. The three events are equally important.
Great Video, one quick correction though. In the Berlin race EK was wearing the Vaporfly Elite (with the next% outsole) not the Vaporfly 4% as stated. Not that it really matters, just FYI.
All of them greatest on their own way. Monza was Kipchoge's 100% effort and I don't believe anyone ever took so much pain and punishment as he did. Berlin just because it's official WR. Ineos159 just because it's first ever sub2 but it's also most unforgettable as his final stretch was about 2:43/km and cutting seven seconds off that shattering 2:50/km pace is completely mind blowing.
As far as the impact on the sport 1:59:40 is the most impressive. In terms of best race performance 2:01:39 is more impressive since he ran alone for most of it
The 1:59 should be honored the most. It's a 0 to 1 moment that showed human can run marathon within 2 hours. That's enough. Before this, all the runs had all the techniques to do whatever, but no body believed this is even possible. Now, every runner will set this goal in their mind.
I think his Berlin Marathon was the best. Everything was calculated for the Breaking2 Project and the 159 challenge. The pacers were running in a v shape to reduce wind resistance. His shoes gave him a slight advantage, even the damn water he was drinking was calculated. It's a great achievement, but these were perfect conditions that cannot be replicated in an actual marathon. It's impressive that he did break the 2 hour mark, but there is a reason why it's an "unoffical." It's just a great ad for Nike (the brand that I love lol)
My sister works for the time-keeping organisation and was present at both the men's world record in berlin, as well as the women's world record in chicago. i would look out in the future if she works another marathon ;)
I also rate Berlin as his best performance yet - and I was convinced he will break 2 after the impressive performance last year in Berlin. With that in mind I also think Bekele's perfomance in Berlin this year was almost as impressive...
for me, it's his 2:01:39 in berlin. is most impressive one. its bcoz of pure race and most of all it mostly exposed of the sun in the entire race. also recognized by the IAAF except vienna and monza.
1:37-1:46 I have watched Breaking 2 several times and didn't notice Allyson Felix was there until this video! Totally irrelevant comment to this video, but it made me happy to see her, lol.
Possibly true yes, I don't feel like that's the next goal though, it's much easier to run in those conditions. The thing we're waiting for now is a "real" sub 2 hour marathon in an actual race, not with pacemakers the entire time and a flat surface.
His breaking2 in Monza is probably his most impressive. Nobody knows a human can run anywhere close to a 2 hour marathon. Especially if you compare it to other elite marathoners, Desisa and Tadese. They weren't able to get into the 2:01 marathon time given all the same advantage that Kipchoge had. Pacers, flat course, good weather, handed liquids. After his breaking2, the Ineos challenge was more a formality than breakthrough. It was pretty much given that he would break 2 hour marathon.
I think the Breaking2 project was the key in his breaking the world record, and from that perspective, the Breaking2 was the one that is of higher significance. But when it came to the Ineos159, it will be the catalyst for a future world record. I believe during the Ineos159, the pacers literally held back Kipchoge, so that he could complete the distance within the slated sub-2hr timing without any unintended mistakes........left to his own devices, especially in the last 5 miles, I think Kipchoge would have smashed the 1.58 mark. I think the next world record from Kipchoge, would be a sub-2 marathon.
I think he will definitely break the world record again
Yes, don't believe hes running Berlin next year though.

He'll be aging and getting slower though.

Angree with you 2018 berlin marathon is the greatest but ineos 159 challege was very exciting.
Definitely one of the best running Channel out there
your content always dope
Amazing video man!!! Thx for sharing it!
Totally agree, Berlin 2018 was the greatest performance, he has a Sub 2 hour in him at Berlin, in fact I reckon he would have cracked it had he run there this year, he would have left Bekele in his wake.
Kipchoge is the G.O.A.T ,and every marathon run by him is great,I can not differentiate any of them.
Thanks for inspiring all of us
kipchoge best official marathon is yet to come and i am looking forward to it
Appart from all factors you mention: being given the hydration bottles in the hand without having to mate a smooth but "forced" apoach to the right side of the road & slow down a bit to grab it (and nace you change your pace) I'm convinced must have had an efect of some 16sec-20sec.
Enjoy the run 👌👍we are all proud of them
Agreed.
Berlin 2018 was astonishing...
Just love these vids
If Berlin was Kipchoge's most impressive effort, then Bekele can run a sub 2 marathon too.
I guess he could or at least get very close
Obviously.
I don't think Bekele can run a sub2. Only run in the 2:01 time frame. He doesn't have the mental capacity to hold that sub2 pace.
@@MrNoodle2001 He had the mental capacity to crush the competition in the 5k, 10k and cross country for over 10 years. What have you smoked?
Absolutely the GOAT
Just now, the Berlin Marathon 2022
So yeah, Berlin 2018 his most impressive Marathon I think as well 😊☀️🏛🏙🏃🏿♂️🇰🇪
2018 Berlin marathon world record
2018 Berlin Marathon was Super one, i believe he will break his on official record soon.
Fantastic post!
Good question, no doubt
I’m gonna guess it was the “greatest marathon of all time” final answer
Fully agreed with the choice. I think it stands out.
I agree with your assessment Berlin!
I agree, the 2018 Berlin marathon really was an epic one by Kipchoge, that was the moment he showed the most strength.
Nice post.
Now off to do marathon training.
Im lucky to even be less than an hour slower than the fastest.
My sister works for the time-keeping organisation and was present at both the men's world record in berlin, as well as the women's world record in chicago. i would look out in the future if she works another marathon ;)
since last Sunday its undoubtedly Berlin 2022. Unbelievable
The videos time length is the 5k split roughly for Kichoges 1:59 pace haha
Fantastic video
Incredible
Wish that his great marathon comes in France in 2024 ! I wish he would run the best Olympic/world record over there !
Agree with your choice.
I also rate Berlin as his best performance yet - and I was convinced he will break 2 after the impressive performance last year in Berlin. With that in mind I also think Bekele's perfomance in Berlin this year was almost as impressive...
Very interesting view
One for the history books☝
for me, it's his 2:01:39 in berlin. is most impressive one. its bcoz of pure race and most of all it mostly exposed of the sun in the entire race. also recognized by the IAAF except vienna and monza.
1:37-1:46 I have watched Breaking 2 several times and didn't notice Allyson Felix was there until this video! Totally irrelevant comment to this video, but it made me happy to see her, lol.
The best marathon of kipchoge was yesterday's one....😅
2) is The best. Beacuse of The pacemakers And things...
If kipchoge starts at exactly 5 degrees Celsius, flattest course, best shoes, no sun exposure, and a really big crowd, he could run 1:58
