ATHLEAN-X FAKE WEIGHTS PART 1: Why Lying About Lifts in the Fitness Industry Should be Unacceptable

  • The more influence you have, the greater your duty is to conduct yourself with integrity and honesty. As the biggest fitness channel, Athlean-X can and should do better. Jeff Cavaliere lying about the weights that he is lifting to an impressionable young audience to sell programs is a cash-grab of the lowest sort.
One of the things that appeals to me about the gym is that it's the same for everyone. 45lbs is 45lbs. Jeff Cavaliere should not get an exception because he is lean, or because he works out in his own gym, or because he has millions of followers. It's the opposite. He has an even greater obligation towards the truth than the average person.
I disagree with Greg Doucette. It's not OK. This isn't the same as a photo shoot in a magazine. Again, honesty matters. Integrity matters. Claiming to be stronger than you are cheapens the accomplishments of those who did it the right way. EDIT: Greg has clarified his position, he didn't get the whole story, and now says it's wrong...lotta drama there.
I don't hate Jeff. We went to the same school, we share a lot of similar views on lifting, and I'm sure we'd get along great if we ever met. I still follow him and he still brings a lot of value on his channel. But I am vehemently opposed to fake weights when done in a way to deceive others for financial gain.
It's sad that Jeff Cavaliere felt the need to use fake weights, and it says a lot about the pressure that a lot of influencers must feel to be lean, look good and be strong. I hope that he admits it and everyone can have an open and honest discussion about why it happened and why perfection should not be demanded of someone just because they have a lot of followers or subscribers. He's a lean dude who has generally good prehab advice...I don't know why I felt the need to do this in the first place.
For those of you who say, "he's just demonstrating the movement!" well...he can do that with just 60kg, why use fake plates at all? So many times people say to me "Athlean-X, his training is great, he's over 40, and lean, and strong as hell". It's a lie to get people to buy, buy, buy. He's projecting a false image, using styrofoam rather than iron.
If you want to debate things, that's fine, just a few things:
    1) Watch the Curlean-X video below. I hope we can agree that he very obviously used fake plates.
    2) Don't bring up subscriber counts, it makes you look silly. Do you let millionaires get away with murder, as well? Address the facts, bootlicking numbers is not useful and appears to be quite herdlike.
    3) Don't be a d*ck! :) (fine, a little is OK, if you really must)

Great video man. Clear, honest, and courageous. As another new person in the youtube fitness scene myself I certainly understand the pressure that can feel like you should do whatever it takes to succeed. But if "succeeding" means lying to people about what I can do with my body, I'd rather get a day job. To me the crime is actually less about misleading people in order to earn money, and more just about the trust people place on us to provide guidance and clarity. If we lie, we're not just misleading them with their pocketbooks, but also with the choices they make with their bodies, health, and diet. Really appreciate this video. Subscribing and look forward to seeing more of your stuff. Keep it up man, we need more people on UA-cam who care more about integrity than subscriber counts

@@GVS Indeed it's a rather unhealthy cycle, with trainers and "influencers" feeling more and more pressure to only show themselves with six-pack gleaming in perfect lighting, leading to people having unrealistic/unhealthy expectations of themselves, and of course then also of us, which only perpetuates the B.S. and continues the cycle. I think the best solution is just for as many of us as possible to be honest about our actual relationship to our bodies and health, so share more honestly about our challenges, and of course to make videos like this one you made here, holding each other accountable to the standards of honesty and transparency that are necessary for us to all grow healthier and stronger together without the pressure to look like a magazine photo all the time or to impress others with our stats. You bring up some great points. When I was starting out I would look at all of Jeff’s videos and he was like the perfect role model. He has a body that you want to spend years of your life training for and he was incredibly strong as well. When I was a beginner I figured he got that strong because he’s been training for over 10 years so I just imagined he built that strength over time, using the techniques that he teaches in his videos. The more I trained the more confused and discouraged I would become. Training his way was exhausting, I found it really difficult to move up in weight but didn’t think much of it because I trusted the philosophy. Now that I’ve been training for 3 years and have been around the UA-cam spectrum the main guy that I love listening to is Greg Doucette. You can hear his honesty and experience in each of his videos plus he speaks to me like a kindergartener which helps. Anyways it would be cool to see you make a video on Greg Doucette. Keep up the UA-cam grind and I hope something comes out of it for you.

Is adding heavier weights on the barbell after adding lighter weights a bad practice?
If I observe your workout sequence 1 setof bench press, neutral pull ups, dumbell rows and you repeated the cycle. Correct? Does it make any difference if I complete all sets of my bench first then neutral pull ups ans so on?

    • @GVS
      @GVS  4 роки тому +1

It's not really bad practice but people don't like it, still. Only time it might have an effect is if you put a LOT of lighter weights first then heavier ones later, and it's a deadlift, so it effects the bend of the bar. But that's only in extreme circumstances.
Sort of, I bounce back and forth in between push/press and pull/row movements. So I don't do rows and pulls back to back. Sometimes the footage is not in perfect order. It's not needed, but saves a significant amount of time. But you can do all bench then all pulldowns, etc. Not a big deal.

90% is like 3-4 RM territory, maybe 5 as you said (if you’re like rounding) but if % is off of 10 weeks ago and you’re at the end of a program it may be written that way because 90% at start shouldn’t be 90% now.
It’s a basic difference between say RPE programming and % - RPE allows for adjustment while % would have to anticipate it.

@@GVS - I'm just not sure we can judge his character based off of a lie about weights, that mind you he doesn't even flaunt. It's not like he's telling his audience "See how much weight I'm lifting? You can lift this much weight too if you do exactly what I'm doing".
Again, do you consistently watch his videos like I do? Because I'm sure that if you did, you would find that he almost never talks about the amounts of weight you could possibly lift, and is more so trying to help people better understand how to properly conduct different types of exercises.
Here's the thing, without even purchasing his programs, Jeff's YT videos helped me lose weight like I never had before. I feel like that should speak more to what his character is like, rather than just nitpicking borderline trivial things like how much weight he does vs doesn't lift.
I'll go watch the Curlean-X video and get back to you.

Plus after this he lifted lighter weights than he did with fake weights to show he can actually lift and his form breaks down and the bar bends. So he pretty much confirmed he used fake weights without ever actually addressing it.
Like you said he didn't just lift it he said it's x amount. Using fake weights or lighter weights makes sense when you have multiple takes amd angles to get but don't lie amd say it's x amount when it's obviously not.

Again, not trying to troll, just funny when you say lying can be the greatest good in a video about fitness and UA-cam influencers, that's the type of example you had in mind and the type you expected your audience to conjure up. While we are playing games, we can keep down the abstract and say maybe she's a witch? Maybe she just murdered the Royal family and deserves to be caught?
