Fishing gear is expensive and the truth is, most anglers just guess when buying a rod. You're at the mercy of a tackle shop employee or an online review as you spend hard earned money on a new rod. It doesn't have to be that way! Understanding ratings, codes, and how popular brands differ, will take all the guess work out so you can make the best selections for your fishing style.
Below you'll find links to many of our favorite rods, separated by technique. We've also included a few budget friendly rods as well. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Going to make my wife watch this video so she can understand why I need so many rods, I have tried to explain to her but this helps me out so much that just going to make her watch it! Thanks for the help!
Excellent video - you guys are true teachers of the craft of fish catching - I am only going in to my third year of boat fishing and the vast majority of my rods are spinning set ups - as I move away from the yard sale rods I started with I am gradually getting in to higher quality gear (not high end, more medium level) and your videos/information are guiding me in the right direction, thank you !
Could you guys do a video just like this but explaining gear ratios for each technique? Id love to see your insight in this.
Great, now somehow help me explain this to my wife!
Hahaha exactly
It's like fashion, she needs these shoes to go with that dress, but that dress that goes with this purse. And you have 20 pairs of shoes to go with all your outfits.
😂😂😂
Lol that why I don't have a wife.....
I purposely put this on in the background while she was in the room with me 😂
First off i almost missed this,,i had to be in work earlier, can't wait to wake up tomorrow and watch this on my day off, looks like it's a good seminar on rods, thanks in advance
I'm always trying to optimize what baits with what rods I own, this video is for me.
can’t wait to get more high end setups . Thankyou tactical bassin
Great info. Wish I'd had this years ago. Boy do I have some overlap and maybe some mismatch rigs. Time to hit the spreadsheet and reassess. Thx!
Great video Tim. I'm an old guy and you just taught me a whole lot of Info!
Thank you Tim it was very very informative and we appreciate the time that you spent doing this video
For a versatile line of rods I really like the posion adrena. Thanks tim great information.
Thinks Tim for just video because learning about rods is something else that I am learning about everything about bass fishing
Because it's more to bass fishing other then just throwing baits
I like this video learning about rods and different rods actions and different brands of rods and how other companies make there rod actions makes sense honestly but I really like this video but rods and rods actions would like for you guys to do another one you guys have inspired me to fish a lot more than often yeah I am a bank fishermen 100% of the time but since learning some techniques from you guys has helped me catch more bass a bigger bass as well getting ready to go fishing at the moment myself going to catch some bluegills wish me luck and Thanks for the tips on rods God bless
Sweet i love geeking out on gear
Thank you very much for this video. Rod nomenclature has always baffled me. I have a much better understanding of now!!
Hello, Tim. Excellent video. Informative, knowledgeable, professional and just next level. I don't do bass fishing, more Surf, river/estuary and some rock fishing here in South Africa but I enjoy watching TB. Thanks for sharing.
Always nice to have a refresher. Thank you guys!
gotta go with the G loomis GLX BJR for chatterbaits, best rod i ever used for em, definitely my favorite rod
Love it! May you all do a spring night fishing video
Awesome. I got 2 or 3 rods. And some fly rods. Never yearned for more. It’s the reels I find myself changing, there’s a huge action difference using various reels.
My favorite finesse spinning is NRX 822 DSR
I’ve needed this vid for years
This is a cool concept for a video. I’m always looking for absolute best and most comfortable rod for every technique and sub niches within each technique regardless of price. Though the price is insane, the Kyoya’s Daiwa Steez rods are out of this world. The swim jig, jerkbait and the 2 strolling rods are some of the best I’ve put hands on for their specific sub niches.
Fantastic information
Love this! Very helpful. 👍
Thanks!
You are the best for this. End of story.
Thanks!
I used to buy a bit more expensive rods/reels, but after noticing them not last much longer than cheaper gear...I went back to affordable rods/reels...Tactical Bassin' needs better rods, as they boat flip 10 lb bass 😂 of my 30 combos, my most expensive reel today is $90....Best part is, more $$$ to spend on lures 😂😂
Having more to spend on lures is absolutely a fair point, but what ruined me on buying expensive combos was learning that st croix will replace rods that are out of warranty. I had a 10+ year old premier series spinner that had the tip snapped off like 3 times and they gave me about 100 dollar credit towards a victory series. And if you say the word tournament they’ll make sure your rods on your doorstep fast.
@ $200 rods start getting good and @ $300 they are great and $400-$500 they are excellent and this is where I draw the line. Somebody else will have to tell the class what $600-$1,200 rods are like because I’ll never know.
@@OGdoorstop very true...if i fished more than once a week & in tournaments I'd probably still buy higher end equipment...damn work ! 😂 Berkley Cherrywood rod...$25 i believe quite a few years ago...caught 1 of my biggest bass on it & still is in great shape...I've learned quite a few things after alot of hype when it comes to fishing...I can't recall ever having a bass break me off when using mono...Bought the hype years ago, went & got some fluoro....worked pretty good for the most part...left it on for probably 4 months or so....set the hook 1 day & line snapped no where near the hook...was about halfway up my rod...noticed a few areas that seemed weaker than normal....Back to mono on 26 combos & 4 with braid
@@JS-oy6nn always nice having the best, quality rods/reels...However, fish couldn't care less & your techniques are far more important to success...absolutely no boat flipping with cheaper rods, that's a guarantee 🤣
Gary sold Dobyns, I'm worried about my two broken ones being replaced and how the new owners are. I heard they're out sourcing them from China. I'm worried about the integrity of the company now. Any experience or feedback on the new owners?
👏👏👏 Thanks for the info. Much appreciated 🫡
The dark sleeper rod might be the best do everything rod.
Its an overlooked gem!
Yup i gave it some love in the comments
"Action" is actually REaction. It is the response of the rod trip to an exerted force to move the rod tip.
Because manufacturers use a nominal definition to label rods as moderate, heavy, etc., it is hard to find a perfect ALL AROUND rod. If they came together in a manufacturers' association and agreed that hanging a specific weight determined will bend a rod tip a measured distance to be set as a standard.
I do agree with Tim on his good suggestion of a starting point at the 8 min mark.
Ill spend on my frog rod and reel. I want the blank as lite as possible with no swing weight . It makes walking the frog so much easier.
Best option in low price for a versatile rod, go Dobyns Fury 734, with braid good for bottom contact and very good with fluoro for deep crank or swimbait. Best lineup for bottom contact in a low price, go Shimano Curado or Zodias. Best reel in low price, Shimano Slx it's the choice, just IMO. High price, Poison adrena or Glorious and Metanium DC for precise cast in tight cover, or Metanium MGL for all the rest of application but for BFS or jerkbait go Shimano Aldebaran
float tube here some 50 years ago and caught a lot of fish
Because there is no industry standard, it would be great to have a breakdown of which manufacturers rods are stiffer, and which manufacturer rods are softer.
Being new to bass fishing this would really help 👍👍👍
That’s the power of the rod that’s not manufacturer. Ultra light - medium light - medium- medium heavy - heavy - etc… The action of the rod also will change how it responds
@@mandalorej9139it absolutely is the manufacturer. Like he said there’s not an industry standard for what defines “medium”, or “x-heavy” while most are pretty similar when it comes to power there are a few outliers. But rod action companies seem to be all over the spectrum and it really just takes experience with a brand to understand it.
Cashion is a funny one in that like Tim said in the video they seem to be slower than most when it comes to rod action but in my experience they seem to be stronger than most on power. Like a a couple of the medium heavy’s mod- fasts I’ve got are a little more moderate than most mod- fasts out there but it takes a little more pressure to get it there it’s more like a heavy than a medium heavy.
Hey guys been a fan along time. I’m from the Hartwell lake area. We have a lake below Hartwell called Russel. And there the fish really like a 3/16 ounce Texas rig what rod would you guys throw that size Texas rig on? Thanks so much for all the knowledge y’all have passed to me over the years. You guys were my inspiration. Thanks again. Deuce
Lets go!🎉
The Dark sleeper rod and the z crank are just two of my favorites,i like all the juice but they just stand out.
Hi Tim, about the Daiwa Steez 721 I think it's a 7'2" and 1 is referred to the piece, cuz 2 is referred to a two pieces rod in JP, 1 it's not the power
Thanks tim, have been thinking about buying the experience 7'6 mh.moderate .I've seen you throwing s-wavers on it. Is it good for anything else ,just like to throw the 168 alot.i want the best rod for it
Thanks Sean
Side question - Days Vs Levante BFS, which would you go with if you wanted a bit crisper action/more sensitive?
The numbers that give me that glazed look at the prices. 😂
El pequeño tim no falla
How would the Megabass Destroyer p5 Madbull compair to the Deamos for throwing the chatterbait?
Hey guys, thanks for the amazing videos keep up the great work!
Question for you just started getting into blade baits for bass this year.but I was curious seeing as you guys have put in the money and time. Is there anything power and action wise for blade baits in any of the st croix lines? Or if the shimano expride in the 7'2ml is as dialed as it gets. Thank you for any help/recommendations.
Whe deciding on a rod nowadays I also consider the guides used on them. I am staying away from rods with the micro guides. As a fan of braid to leader systems for most of my fishing I find it very hard to use any knot that doesn’t snag when casting! I am so afraid of popping out a guide on my rods I’m considering not using braid. I have tried all the connection knots and none of the cast through the guides smoothly to ease any concerns about damaging a guide! I have popped out a few guides over the years, but fortunately I know how to repair/replace a broken guide(s). I have a “Custom Power Wrap” rod building machine from when I use to build saltwater rods for Long Range fishing and Fly Rods.
I’d like to know your opinion on how you address this situation when choosing a rod.
I like it when they put a picture of the bait on the rod.😢
Im looking to get a bait caster that can do a lot of different techniques, I've been looking at the (Favorite Fishing Sick Stick Casting Combo). Any preferences?
Any chance we can get a video on reels next? Gear ratios still confuse me 😅
Are the st croix tournament series comparable to g Loomis GLX or is it that big of a difference between the two?
No hate on the ugly stix there gx2 rods have that soft moderate action that is perfect for anything with treble hooks keeps them buttoned up
Hey Tim: What rod for dragging a 10" ribbontail worm along weedy bottoms?
What do you guys think about the Megabass P5 BMG as a flipping/pitching jig rod? Would it fish like a $500 dollar Braillist? From what I’ve seen the action seems very similar.
Thank you for the video. For the Daiwa rods I always thought it was slightly different than your explanation so please correct me if I’m wrong. But STAGS721MF. Shouldn’t that be Steez, AGS guides, 7ft 2in, 1 piece rod, Medium power, fast action? I have been reading Daiwa wrong for a long time now if that isn’t the case 😂
Could the Expride 7’4 Heavy double for some frogging duties? Trying to pick between the 7’3 XH and 7’4 H to handle heavy cover pitch & flip as well as frogs
Yes 100% I can confidently answer this question! Last year I got a shimano Expride 7”6 heavy, and let me tell you it’s a beast. Imo the Expride Bs actions run a tad heavy. I would call there heavy almost a heavy +. I would confidently throw a frog with mine. Bought mine for pitching and flipping and have been extremely happy. So happy I’ve since then bought 2 more exprides! 😂
Is the whipsnake good for finesse swimbaits and ned rigs?
Yes, those are some of its best techniques.
@@Kjm420 yes
I’m a believer in expensive reels and $100-$150 rods. As a bank fisherman I know I’m going to eventually break a rod. Plus I can pair the same reel with multiple rods to target different fish/techniques.
I’m right the opposite I love a Shimano slx reel paired to whatever price rod. I have found out I love the slx rods too so it’s a win win for me. With exception of swim baits I’m switching over to all slx
I fish the bank with $1000 combos. Favorite for the bank is raid gladiator anti rods with steez reels
I just recently bought an Abu Garcia Vendetta rod. I misread it at the store and thought it was a medium heavy fast. When I got home and looked the rod over again, it was actually a heavy fast. So it is very stiff with little tip bend to it. Would recommend it just be a frog rod? Thanks for another great video!
Yep I would throw frogs and bigger jigs on it
Unfortunately I've already seen a mistake lol not all mh fast will be the same for example. Some are softer and some are stiffer. Looking the at recommend lure weight can help determine sometimes which is softer and which is stiffer when shopping online but it's still best to get them in hand to make your choice. Some companies medium fast rods are more medium light fast than medium. Lure weight in such rods will be 1/8th and up where a true medium would be 1/4 oz and up generally. And jm not ranking composite rods I mean graphite/carbon rods lol. Composite rods can be even softer in those exact powers and actions.
Question off subject but. What snap do yall use to replace the ones on a Jackhammer??? Also the Mini Max ??? Trying to get ready and have some needs changed. Thanks 🙏🏼🇺🇸🤙🏼
Still learning the whole rod game. Best one I have is a psycho stick. But reels can fool you, best casting is a favorite soleus or soleus xcs (if you want the better one that 40⁰⁰ more). I have a Curado dc & mgl, tatula svtw, lews tournament pro. And the soleus sends it and lasts so far. My son has the xcs and it's got a better paint job, bigger handle, and a couple features on higher end reels all for 180 retail or 140 directly from favorite. But for rods, I'm still scathing my head. Got a tfo 7 ² heavy moderate tactical bass spinner bait rod. I thought single hooked baits need fast action. Is it because of short strikes to kinda slow the hook set. I use it for magdraft type swim baits.
Hey Tim: About that Fenwick "if you could only have one" spinning rod, can you tell me why Fenwick offers it AND two shorter lengths with the exact same specs? i.e. Why 7'1" AND 6'10" AND 6'6" with the exact same specs?
Good morning Tim. Quick question for you. I really like the Expride line of rods, so can you tell me what the Expide 7'-6" MH with a moderate action, which technique could you use it for?
I think they use it for the tactical mini rig-light wire a-rig and probably jigs and maybe swim jig is light cover. You could throw a crank on it too.
@@bigfah2506 thanks for your comment an insight. I was thinking around those lines of baits too. Something like the lighter glide baits, 6"magdraft, Megabass dark sleeper, maybe something like a chatterbait. 🤔
@ it would do that for sure.
I have that exact rod. And it is one of my favorites. I use it for bigger Texas rig worms, jigs, swim jigs, glidebaits such as the smaller S-waver or Storm arashi glide, and it is a perfect rod for the 6” magdraft in my opinion. It even makes for a decent smaller frog rod. My advice is to buy one if it’s in your budget. I don’t think you would regret it. It’s just an amazing all around rod.
@andrewgardner4803 Thanks for your input and experience with this rod. I will have to add it to my rod collection.
If I wanted to fish a 3/4 jig in deep water 20ft with some weeds. Non football head. Can I get away with a med heavy fast 7’3to 7’5 rated to 1oz or do I need to go up to a heavy in same specs?
I have a question guys, when you can visibly see bass breaking surface, like 1 pop here another over there and so on, what do you throw? I threw topwater and nothing worked, should I downsize or throw a subsurface?
@tacticalbassin
So you have replaced the Megabass Orochi with the Expride?
Also, where the Dobyns at?
Yes 👍 The Orochi has been discontinued. We actually just invested in more Dobyns to give them another go... we try to see what's new every few years from each brand.
I have a 7”6 HF - NRX+ MBR. It’s good for buzzbaits and I punch with it. What other technique would this shine in?
I’m looking for like an all around Texas rig and jig rod that I can use for anything from docks to rocks to grass what should I get reel too. I’m asking like medium heavy or heavy if you know any any rod and reels I should get please tell me.
Under $110
My question is, now that the Megabass Ronan Spinning rod for Jerkbaits is no longer available, what is your opinion on the Shimano Expride Spinning rod that's 6'8" Medium Fast as a jerkbait replacement for the Ronan?
You nailed it... that's the best replacement we've found so far.
would that Loomis 966 rod handle 12/0 beast hooks?
Yes, it's can set them, especially if you're running Braid to leader.
Great video!!
Anyone have any experience with 7’0 Expride heavy casting rod? Thanks!
No but I do have the Expride 7”6 heavy I bought for pitching and flipping and have been very happy with it so far
Cane pole, saftey pin, wine cork im set.
The 7’1 medium fast spinning rod rated from 3/16 to like 5/8 ounce is literally the best spinning rod ever created. Very very very hard to come by action and rating
Will a 6,10 ft medium heavy fast action rod be good with lipless crankbaits such as the lews laser xts combo from academy? I will be using straight 40 lb reaction tackle braid with just a snap swivel and no leader since I only have 2 rods and don't want to keep tying and reriging all the time to switch bait colors
Treble hook baits will be better with a moderate action
Hell yea itll work.. get out and catch’em bubb
Best 6inch magdraft rod?
Do you guys prefer the 965 or 966 g loomis imx pro swbr for 8 inch magdraft and 68 special and 8 inch hudds?
966 👍
@tacticalbassin when will you switch/use the 965? I assume for baits like ganteral and ganteral jr, 168 s waver, 6 inch mag draft, and etc?
Between bass boat prices, rod and reel prices and need for specific technique rods...fishing is becoming similar to horse racing, sport of kings.
That's certainly an option. The beauty of bass fishing is you can still walk the bank, use cheap gear, and catch giant fish! You're not competing with anyone but yourself, and whether you choose to go all in, or stay simple, it's a personal choice.
Well stated.
You just have to work your way into it over years,we have all been there
i’ve been struggling to find a do all versatile rod.
tatula elite ags 7’ med med hvy, levante diablo spec r, etc.
someone help
Skip the spec R and grab the Tatula Elite 7’ med/mh. It’s an excellent rod and plenty crisp of action.
👍😎
Best bang for the buck spinning rod for 2.8-3.3 paddle tail on 1/8th oz guppiehead / guppiehead underspin
I mean the 7’2ML Expride is excellent, there are a couple Tatula elites that 7’6 ML and M/ML in power which would fit the bill. For me, I’m using the Steez 7’6 “The One”
@bigfah2506 I was thinking possibly a 6'8 medium expride or a 7'2ml plus expride. I don't want to be over powering the bait with a medium but it give me more leverage to put fish away from grass beds
@@dylanlaughman8126 you want a ml then, a medium will be more then what you want. I like a medium simply because hook size, I can go up and not have to worry about bending them out.
@dylanlaughman8126 I was reading the Expride-B spinning rods like the 6'-10---7' ish Medium Light rods feel more like a Medium Power rod. The Expride when on sale is a Do Not Pass Up Deal. Awesome rods for the $$.
I don’t know, nothing is more fun than floating down a river and throwing a 2.2 ounce rod with a 5 ounce reel and walking some baits for smallmouth.
Anyone have a rod recommendation for throwing super spooks?
Didn't know Fenwick had a 7'10 rod. They don't even put it on their site. Kind of seems like they suck at promoting and providing info on their rods. I do like their rods that I have tried though.
If i spend $250 on a reel ill spend the same amount on the rod
For beginners and budgets, all this brand names, the price are still too high. I think berkley lighting, some abu garcia, Fenwick, and etc would fit $$.
Use the same information he’s giving you to fit rods in your budget. He’s not saying buy this or that.
Wish my wife would watch this She would finally understand why we (fishermen) need “so many rods ”. 😂😂😂
Tips for Fisch😀
Always fustrated me how their is on “standard” when it comes to rods
Why do $200+ rods not come with hook keepers?
Just guessing, cost? Some clothing manufacturers skip details to lower production costs.
@@funkymojo111 you think it costs that much to add a tiny clip to the bottom of the rod?
Believe it or not, many hook keepers are patented. It's WAYYY harder to add a quality keeper than you'd ever imagine.
@@tacticalbassin my only beef with the Exprides🤕
I’m a bank beater that fishes just about everyday the ice is out. Fishing is an industry that is profit driven. Fisherman just want to fish. More money spent doesn’t equate to more fish caught. Develop your skills and you can catch fish with any gear. One pole, one reel, and a few baits is all I need to catch and have fun. Develop your skills. Collecting gear and spending money doesn’t catch fish.
Still fun though….
