😂 Hearing you say how much rods have gotten better got me reminiscing about my first quality rod and reel (or what was quality for me at that point) in the mid 80's. I had a paper route, and saved for what seemed like forever for a Berkley Lighting Rod, with the pistol grip, and a Ryobi baitcaster. That setup was mid $200's if I remember correctly. It would about break your wrist when a large bass would hit. My first large Northern on it was a real eye opener as a teenage kid. I was happy when longer handles became the thing... lol. BTW, I have that same Loomis crank bait rod in the picture, that's an older rod, but I still use it, has an old Shimano Calais 201 on it. 😊
It’s always amazing to read comments on this channel from guys that clearly don’t fish this way. Imagine a channel dedicated to high performance cars and seeing responses from dudes saying (unironically) “I don’t get what the big deal is, my Ford Fiesta works just fine.”
Ford fiestas can actually get pretty souped up , lol. But yes-I get your point. And that’s why I like that they go over entry price-to the highest end possible. I can’t afford a rod+reel setup that’s a grand+. And I know a lot of people are in the exact situation as well
So I gravitate towards the middle ground. My most expensive setup (a St. Croix Bass X with a Dawia tatula) works so fantastic-and was in the 400ish range
This is so much wisdom! 🤙 I think everyone would benefit from a video where you went through maybe 10 or so popular techniques and what specs of rods/reels work best for them and why! It would be very nice to have it specifically laid out by guys like you and Matt who have so much experience with different styles and gear! Keep the good stuff coming, brother! ❤
Your new MICRO A-Rig . What rod do you recommend? Ps based on all your reviews I have bought deep into XPride line for almost everything.. love that rod line …
Exactly what I commented, golf is the perfect analogy really. You can't use a putter to throw an 8" swimbait and you can't use a driver to throw a 1/4oz drop shot.
It’s about time someone took a rigid rod and loaded it by pulling on the line to show the action, thank you. How do you tell how sensitive the rod is other than someone telling you that it is. I have actually taken a 15’ piece of line with a weight on one end and swivel on the other attached it to the rod and dragged it across the carpet floor to see how sensitive it really is was.
Great video I am planning on upgrading all of my gear but not right because I am still learning more about bass fishing thanks for the educational video and the great tips I watch you guys alot keep making these great educational videos and helping people like myself learn more about bass fishing
Great video. Answered some questions I had. As a loyal st croix fisherman and new to jerkbait fishing, I'm having a problem deciding which St. croix rod to purchase. I've been using my mojobass rods, and they seem to work fine, but I'd like to use the rod built for jerbait fishing. I've been casting the Megabass vision 110+1 & +2....awesome jerkbaits. Thank you for the input.....in advance.
@@d10dozerman2 I got that on amazon, forget the name but it is the only one with the post in the middle that sticks up 3 or so inches, worth every penny my friend
I 100% agree with you it gets annoying that rod makers don't go off the same code. Then you get to inshore where they make rods that can be made for saltwater and fresh that use the same actions and codes. They need to make a universal code for all rods regardless of the companies your average person can understand them.
Love y'alls content and I'm glad to see more - I'm not sure how to get this question to you all though so I'll drop it here and maybe you all can take a look. Disclaimer; I don't work for or own any stake in the company I'm referencing, just genuinely curious about it. I recently came across a brand of baits called Headbanger lures. Their stuff uses an interesting weight (or plastic "lip" for cranks) to make the bait wobble and dash around in a really different kind of way. I picked some up to give them a try though I haven't had much of a chance to put them to the test. Based on their ads, reviews, videos, etc the bait action is really interesting and they do in fact catch bass. I'm curious though; have you all seen these baits and what do you think of them? It seems like it could be an interesting new way of doing weighted presentations in deeper water, in the case of the weighted hooks they offer, and a more erratic and unique crank/wake bait action for higher in the column in the case of their cranks and wake baits. Thanks for reading and I look forward to pre-spawn fishing around my neck of the woods with y'alls guidance!
Tim, somewhat confused on the GLoomis 968 and 906. You talk about the 968 for deep cranking but not a good choice for glidebaits, yet in the description you list the 966 - which is a lighter power - for swimbaits.
Great explanation Tim. I really need a new full sized swim jig rod on a $200 budget. I was hoping for a recommendation for that! I love you how you guys include your preferred option and then a budget option but sometimes wish there was a bang for the buck or mid range recommendation for each video. Thanks for all you do.
When I get asked why I have/need to many rods I just explain: "You wouldn't expect a golfer to use a putter the entire 18 hole course. Every rod has a purpose or specialty."
Mine told me I have too many, so I spread them out across a couple different areas to make it seem like there’s less of them. Being a picky eater as a kid taught me that trick
I feel like the best analogy I've ever heard on why we need so many rods is golfing. Golfers need a bag full of clubs depending on distance and situations they're faced with. We aren't using a 3 wood to throw a drop shot and we aren't going to use a wedge to throw a glide bait.
Amazing video Tim! All of the knowledge that you teach us helps me a lot. Also I was wondering if there was such thing as a budget shorter Swimbait rod. Because I am a short person so the 8 foot rods would be difficult to use for someone like me. I’ve been looking but haven’t found one, so I you happen to know one that would help a lot. Keep up the great work.
Great stuff! I bought some Dobbins rods a few years back upon your recommendation. What is the name of that lipless crankbait on the GLoomis rod in the picture at the beginning. It looks like peanut bunker that we see in the Chesapeake Bay and tribes. Thanks Guys! You're the best!
Question: Would a Kastking Zephyer BFS reel work on a 6 1/2 ft med action FLY rod? Rod has a very limber tip. Looking forward to your answer. Thanks for your help!
Thank you for this video. Here’s a question: what is your recommendation for a budget large Swimbait/Jig rod? I was eyeing the st. Croix mojo bass 7’10 HF and I think it might be a good fit. What do you guys think? Thanks for the advice!!
I would love if you guys could do a review series on the differences between brands of rods. For instance, y’all have talked about St. Croix having slower actions than other rods (their fast is more modfast when compared to other brands). Or other things that stand out about a particular brand or specific rod/rod line. Another example coming from one of the $300 buyers guide vids, Matt talked about the Halo KS2 rods having a softer tip that showed deflection even more/better than other similar power and action rods. Could be done as just reviews of the specific brand per video but go into detail on the nuances that differentiate them. Could even include things like the warranty or variances in the different rod lines a brand offers. I’m sure that’s a ton of work but it would definitely help me out a ton when trying to consider what brand to purchase rods from.
I second this - I run into this problem when buying and I’m looking for mod fast rods and sometimes the mod rod is faster than the xtra fast on my curado rod 😂
I have read a lot that the new Expride B spinning in light and Medium Light are one power up. To say the Light feels like or fishes like a MH. Keitech 2.8 with 1/8 heads and 1/8 underspin which rod L or ML Expride B. I fish your underspin 1/8 now on St croix ML and want the sensitivity of an Expride now. Please help out. Thank you for all you do.
I have the 7’2” ML expride spinning. In my opinion the rod has a medium light tip section with a medium power back bone. You definitely can throw your 1/8oz lures on it. You’ll just have more power when fighting fish. It’s an amazing rod that I have used for Ned’s, drop shots, and swim baits.
I thought I had all the combos I needed but now I will be in my first tournament on Lake Okeechobee and need a flipping stick? I have medium heavy and heavy rods but they are for lures up to 1oz and then I have my medium heavy to heavy rods for a-rigs, big swimbaits and glide baits, one that goes from 1-5oz lures and the other that is 2-8oz. So for Lake Okeechobee, what do you recommend for a good flipping stick? What about my finesse combo? I know there are a lot of weeds so I will need to use more weed less presentations but what rod and line do you recommend- medium instead of medium light? Suffix 131 in 30 lb with a 10 lb FC leader?
Great info Tim. I’m looking at 7’3 MH rods in the $200-$300 range mainly for bottom contact baits. I’m looking at a St Croix legend tournament and a GCX JWR. Any thoughts as to which would be the better buy? Or any others that may serve me better? Thanks.
I'm not Matt or Tim, but I'm just going to say it. The GCX isn't even in the same realm as the St. Croix LTB in anything but price. The GCX is more in line with the Victory or Avid rods or even Mojo Bass. The LTB is more in line with the IMX Pro, Legend Elite/X are GLX/NRX and the Legend Xtreme are in the Conquest range.
Since you guys are fairly new to TN and you are such tackle junkies, I’m gonna give you a gem you likely dont know about because this rod was made and production stopped before you guys moved here. It’s a 7’3” medium SMG “Smallmouth Guru” rod made by All Pro Rods, but it was designed by The SmallMouth Guru himself, AKA Stephen Headrick of Celina Tennessee. He owns Punisher Lures and has a shop in Celina called Dale Hollow Onestop. If you can find one of these rods you will be blown away. It will completely replace your Keitech small swimbait rod. It fishes a lot like the way you describe the Loomis MBR actions. I’d say if you can find one it would be through Headrick or Punisher directly. I have one and I’m kicking myself for not buying a couple extra when I could have cause they are hard to find now.
With so many rods for different use, how do you manage the issue that different size baits require different size lines? Spools can help on spinning rods but not bait cast rods. How do you manage this issue.
The lures that break those action rules confuse me some. Like the moderate jig rod or a fast for a jerk bait rod. Does the power of the rod compensate for the action that doesn’t suit the hook type?
I was fortunate enough to win a Abu Garcia Xenon bait caster . Im looking for an all purpose rod to pair it with , something 7'5 or so medium heavy . Ive narrowed my choices to St Croix Victory , G Loomis GCX , MBR , and Shimano Zodius . Any options would be welcome
Hi Tim, thanks for this. Wondering about square bill recommendation - you list Orochi XX Glat Side but earlier you chose Levante version. Are they interchangeable?
What sized reel do you use on the shimano slx 7’3 swimbait rod, I’m going to pick one of those up because I think the short rod will be nice on a kayak but I’m decided whether a 200 or 300 sized curado or tranx would be best for 1-3 oz baits
Hey Tim, I love your content here just wanted to give a couple corrections. I am a G.Loomis engineer and our 4 power is a heavy rod and a 5 power is extra heavy. The full power chart is located on our website if you want to see the rest of them. As for the CBR rods, the power numbers are wrong and will be updated next time we update IMX-PRO to match in line with the rest of our rods. Additionally, in the description the NED rig rod should be the 821 NRR instead of the DSR. Let me know if you have any questions and I would be happy to help. Tight lines!
Hi I am a Mechanical Engineer graduating this spring and I was just wondering how you got a job at G-Loomis? I have looked for jobs like that but haven't been able to find many engineering jobs in the fishing industry
Hey@@garrettcheeseman3787 I looked for years before finding this job and I love it. I found it by looking at different companies websites on their career sections and just finally got lucky. I wish you luck!
@@raytubach8988 I honestly am not entirely sure but I think it is because we use the same lure rating for the JWR rods in GCX all the way to Conquest. But the higher end rods have a much faster recovery rate and thus can handle a bit more weight on the cast than the mid priced rods. I haven't actually tested this, but I kind of want to now. I will get back to you with what I find out.
Is there a rod on the market that has Winn grip handles and non ceramic eyes? I'm so tired of ceramic eyes breaking. Most likely my fault but need something better. Thanks
as a noob, the technique(s) that always confuse me are the companies that market topwater/jerkbait rods that are usually fast to extra fast when everything I see from guys like yourselves & others recommend separate actions for those 2 techniques?
Sometime blank materials plays a huge role. Cheaper rod blanks are more parabolic and works pretty well with Jerkbait and Topwater. Go to your local tackle store and start testing out rod blanks, you will be amazed.
I think the easiest way to explain different rods is to compare to golf clubs. If you’re in a sand bunker, you could try to get out with a 5 iron, but using a sand wedge would probably bring better results.
Not sure if this is a sensitive topic, or if you can answer it in a public forum, but you and Matt both were Dobyns fans. Now Dobyns is conspicuously absent in your gear recommendations.
There aren’t any 6’10” medium SLX rods available for jerk baits, I only see 6’10” in medium fast. I believe medium fast is not soft enough for jerkbait fishing. Any feedback will be appreciated.
LOL it's actually extra fast but who's counting. I think they may have suggested that one for jerkbaits before and perhaps they tried it and it worked for them. I'm looking for a shorter spinning rod for jerkbaits, shad raps and poppers and noticed lew's TP1X has a 6'10 M MF rod. 6th sense and abu garcia do around that price point. I actually went to the store to buy that TP1X since it is on sale but didn't like it for that application after holding it. Good rod though and I have one of those (7'3" H F) for frogs that I like. I eventually noticed they had a 6'6" st. croix triump ML F next to it and that felt like a much better fit for me but like Tim said ultimately its up to each person and what feels best for them. The st. croix rods are a bit softer and that one I mentioned is very soft even though it says fast action. Good luck.
It helps to know what size/depth jerk baits. I throw Staysee 90 or 110 size that are +1 or deeper just fine on the SLX 610 M. Vision 110 or similar on the Expride 610M and smaller baits on GLoomis 842 SJR Works for me…
Anyone have any thoughts on storing rods when not in use. Mine are on the ceiling of the garage supported in two places. Is that bad? They don’t seem bent or stressed. Thanks.
What confuses me, is you say, beginners should use a medium spinning rod for all around finesse applications - What action tip? Med / Fast / Xtra Fast?
The action depend on your liking so you gotta go test out yourself. I recommend starting out with “Fast” action rod. The “medium power” is a great do everything rod from Senko to Small crankbait.
It's best to look up the manufacturer catalog or website. Usually in Shim-Loomis speak, "843" indicates 84" in length and "3" power/MED-HEAVY and the tech spec such as JWR/jig & worm rod, MBR/Mag Bass rod, indicates the design of the overall taper for a technique, granted many "tech spec" rods are marketed for sales purposes. FWIW, custom rod builders can provide the most accurate data and scientific breakdown of the raw blank itself...from proper rating of "power" to actual taper rating (slow/moderate/mod-fast/fast/x-fast/etc). There are also other variances that affect the overall finished product, to include the reel seat, rear handle length, guidetrain material/make and trim level of the guides and set up (guides on top v. spiral), thread/trim/epoxy work. FWIW, using a lighter/sometimes smaller guidetrain with cleaner epoxy work and mostly single footed guides, will great reduce the weight of the overall rod. Also, proper spacing and set up of the guides will either make or break the fishability of the completed rod (hence why some customs easily out perform and weigh significantly less than the same blank built factory. In the end, it's the blank, from mandrel, to raw material, scrim, resin, cross weaves, oven baking process, to manufacturing process, etc. Massive rabbit hole available for you to get lost in of you want...but these are the basics.
The Bass X in Extra heavy or Extra Extra heavy. St.Croix rods do tend to be a bit heavier than advertised so i think the extra heavy or even just heavy would be ok. I wouldn't recommend throwing the max weight that the rods say tho. It may say you can fish up to 5 or 8 oz but you'd most likely break the rod attempting a cast. Another alternative if you're not feeling the bass x or slx would be the Dobyns Fury 806. Similar in price to the BassX. @@CasualBassGuy
I don't get the whole fancy pole bull crap I use an ugly stik and I use it in many different waterways and I pull out huge fish all year around my biggest fish was a 7 lb bass this year and that's pretty big for Jersey PA area
Come on Tim, show off a bit and let us see the full arsenal! I have 3 turnabout rod holders like that one, and I don't do it for a living. We know you have a garage full. 😉
You mentioned dating yourself. When I started bass fishing the main rods were a pistol grip 5'6". Spinning rods were not used. Baits were limited. Bass fishing has evolved beyond my imagination.
Fishing is like golf you need a rod for each situation, you are not putting with a 9 iron , you don't wanna fish a drop shot with 60lb braidin a casting rod
I think you could have made it simpler to just write in the description the technique and then the length, weight, and action. Then your favorite rod choice.
You most certainly can do it that way and be totally fine. I don't think most newer folks have as much knowledge to know how to do that to best fit each situation. But that's fishing right it's something different for everyone
The coding on the rod isn’t even the issue it’s that there is no standard for each class or action or power…like a st croix mojo bass medium fast is not the same or even close to a lews or a 13 medium fast. Am I the only one that has seen this?
I think I've said this a dozen times. But I'd pay good money if you and Matt did a 2-3 hour long seminar like b.latt, where a group can fire off questions live in person with the examples and wisdom you guys have.

Great video, super helpful
Assume video, first time I really understand subject, wish I could find similar for surf fishing, can anyone recommend one for surf ?
I want that rods holder in the background. Where can I buy one of those rods holder?
What kind of rod should I use for trout, bass and catfish?
Great info Tim. I’m looking at 7’3 MH rods in the $200-$300 range mainly for bottom contact baits. I’m looking at a St Croix legend tournament and a GCX JWR. Any thoughts as to which would be the better buy? Or any others that may serve me better? Thanks.
Check out the 7’2 MH Expride B. By far the best in that price range if you’re okay with an inch less
Expride series is insanely good for the price. The 7’2 Mh is a sweet rod
What do y’all think of Kistler rods? Been seeing a lot of good things about them. Specifically the KLX or chromium.
Dude , what brand of trap do you have on the thumbnail ? Would like to purchase some of those !
Jackall TN Lipless Crankbaits - SG Threadfin
With so many rods for different use, how do you manage the issue that different size baits require different size lines? Spools can help on spinning rods but not bait cast rods. How do you manage this issue.
You guys coming to the classic?
Have you guys tried the 7 10 Cashion Icon swimbait rods for glides? If so what are your thoughts?
The lures that break those action rules confuse me some. Like the moderate jig rod or a fast for a jerk bait rod. Does the power of the rod compensate for the action that doesn’t suit the hook type?
Any recommendations for a good jig/Jack hammer rod? I wanted to buy the brailist but wasn’t sure how it would do with moving baits.
How much is that Alabama rig setup (value)? I'd hate to lose that on a bad knot or snag. There goes 50 bucks lol
Thanks Tim..
What is your favorite walking top water rod I didn't see it listed
What hook keepers are you guys using on those rods?
Thank you!
Hi Tim, thanks for this. Wondering about square bill recommendation - you list Orochi XX Glat Side but earlier you chose Levante version. Are they interchangeable?
They're definitely interchangeable, it just comes down to budget.
Knoxville Expo Center East Tn Fishing Expo first day is today. Doors open 2:00pm-7:30pm/ F-S 10am 7:00pm. Who’s going?
You can tell who uses the red and white bobber and live worms just by some of the comments here.
What sized reel do you use on the shimano slx 7’3 swimbait rod, I’m going to pick one of those up because I think the short rod will be nice on a kayak but I’m decided whether a 200 or 300 sized curado or tranx would be best for 1-3 oz baits
you would be fine with a curado 200 and 20lb fluoro, it would fit nicely size wise on that rod
Wow, glad you jumped on here. I have 853 and 854 JWR and I accept they are MH and H but why is the lure rating so low?..
@@Fishing_Rod_Engineer thank you. My working assumption was the rating is the lure sans the trailer. That’s the only way I can make sense of it…
Is there a rod on the market that has Winn grip handles and non ceramic eyes? I'm so tired of ceramic eyes breaking. Most likely my fault but need something better. Thanks
What length Brailist do you all use for your jig fishing? The 7’ or the 7’ 5”?
The braillist is 7' 5" 👍🏼
Is medium and moderate the same ? Great vid
Medium is the power and moderate is the action
Medium is how strong/ stiff the rod is. Moderate is how far the rod is willing to bend.
Is the expride 72mh glass stiffer than the intenza 72mh glass?
as a noob, the technique(s) that always confuse me are the companies that market topwater/jerkbait rods that are usually fast to extra fast when everything I see from guys like yourselves & others recommend separate actions for those 2 techniques?
Sometime blank materials plays a huge role. Cheaper rod blanks are more parabolic and works pretty well with Jerkbait and Topwater. Go to your local tackle store and start testing out rod blanks, you will be amazed.
“Hooksets are free”
The log I just absolutely buried my $25 bait into: 🤗
What would be a good swimbait rod (No heavier than 4oz) that i can cross over with another technique
Very vague question. One rod can’t do everything. The real question is “how heavy do you want to throw”?
Dobyns Fury 806.
I feel like 36 minutes doesn't even scratch the surface here
I think the easiest way to explain different rods is to compare to golf clubs. If you’re in a sand bunker, you could try to get out with a 5 iron, but using a sand wedge would probably bring better results.
My explanation is "You can hammer in a screw with a pair of pliers, but would you want to?"
Not sure if this is a sensitive topic, or if you can answer it in a public forum, but you and Matt both were Dobyns fans. Now Dobyns is conspicuously absent in your gear recommendations.
What lure is that pictured with title.?
There aren’t any 6’10” medium SLX rods available for jerk baits, I only see 6’10” in medium fast. I believe medium fast is not soft enough for jerkbait fishing. Any feedback will be appreciated.
It is
LOL it's actually extra fast but who's counting.
Thanks.
It depends on how far apart the supports are and how much the rods bow between them. Rod racks are a better choice.
Thanx !
Thanks. I never knew what the number-lettering system meant. Is there some type of rod reference guide available to refer to?
ONE ROD TO RULE THEM ALL
What is a reaction diawa rod
What would be the better budget swimbait rod, SLX or BassX?
Big swimbait or just regular swimbaits?
@@ColorblindBullpup big swims, soft and glides
I'm not a fan of the new way that Tackle Warehouse lists the Rods they offer. In fact, I'm not a fan of the changes they made to their website.
You know its cold when these guys are inside
Come on Tim, show off a bit and let us see the full arsenal! I have 3 turnabout rod holders like that one, and I don't do it for a living. We know you have a garage full. 😉
Line watch. V. Rod watch.
When somebody asks me why I have so many rods I tell them, “You don’t hit a screw with a hammer” 😂
They’re tools for a specific job.
Faster Action = More Hookups
Slower Action = More Catches
Almost like relationships 😮
I think you could have made it simpler to just write in the description the technique and then the length, weight, and action. Then your favorite rod choice.
I use 1 rod 1 reel for every situation... Just change my line and lures according to where I am... I do absolutely great
You most certainly can do it that way and be totally fine. I don't think most newer folks have as much knowledge to know how to do that to best fit each situation. But that's fishing right it's something different for everyone
Fast forward ⏩⏩⏩ 5 mins into the rods
The coding on the rod isn’t even the issue it’s that there is no standard for each class or action or power…like a st croix mojo bass medium fast is not the same or even close to a lews or a 13 medium fast. Am I the only one that has seen this?
Every time my wife asks me why I have so many rods, I always give the same answer. wait, I dont have a wife...
