Great to see the man responsible for the Star Wars title design. He achieved immortality.
Thanks for the comment, Ruairidh!
It's amazing how much work goes into something that you barely notice
When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

To be fair, it always breaks my heart when people fail to notice main titles and are not even staying for end credits, as well. They're very legitimate part of the movie.
PictureProductStudio when we have little interest in something we're less likely to bother with it. Hence "titles" and "end credits".
this is awesome. i could easily watch a full length documentary on this guy
Me too!
Hi! I'm now on UA-cam if you want to subscribe to my channel.
I recently posted a video about my new book: ua-cam.com/video/XnT2FrmYRq0/v-deo.html
So why don't the Oscars hand out awards for title design?
they used to but they stopped a looong time ago.
@@cinematicgoodness7325 that's sad...
@@cinematicgoodness7325 "they used to"... Once, lol
Soooo true
I'm loving these little mini documentaries on different film roles! so many overlooked positions filled with such dedication and art!
I always loved watching titles and credits (and it breaks my heart when people ignore both of them) and yet I somehow failed to notice that some of my personal favorite title sequences were designed by this legend of a man. What is great is that it seems that Dan Perri always designs titles and credits regardless of a current status of a filmmaker, doing both "genre" and "big" movies - he designed marvelous main title sequence for a lesser-known independent film "Curdled", for example. One of the best title designers ever.
Thanks for the kind words! I have a UA-cam channel now, if you'd like to learn more about my career.
I just posted a video about my new book: ua-cam.com/video/XnT2FrmYRq0/v-deo.html
He came to our University to do a talk and omg he's so lovely! I love that he's confident in everything he does because he knows that he offers what he believes fits each movie the best. He takes the traits of a movie and translates that to every title sequence he makes. They're all so different, it's amazing!!!
Whoah never saw that version of star wars logo, awesome!
I am coming to the end of my Foundation year doing film at Falmouth University Cornwall England and yesterday myself and many students had the privilege of Dan Perri talking to us in person about his work. Dan gave many great insights into how he works and advice for all the students, I asked Dam about the work he did on Field Of Dreams.
best of luck just graduated 2 weeks ago, a bit of advice Falmouth won't help you get a job you at all - make as many connections as possible. This advice served me well I hope it does too
@@mstanciuprod it is up to all individuals to get themselves a job and I have been able to relaunch my feature film and launch an album because I have been given an opportunity to be creative. Lockdowns destroyed my life so university was the only option.
Thank you for all the kind words about my work! If you'd like to learn more about my work on Star Wars, Raging Bull, The Exorcist or the other films I've worked on, I'm currently raising money to publish a book about my life and career: ua-cam.com/video/XnT2FrmYRq0/v-deo.html
thank you you are a legend
I never even thought that something so small in a film could make such a huge difference, this dude is extremely talented.
I really hope this guy is paid a good amount for his stunning design work. He deserves it.

It's so beautiful how people find their passions, different people and different personalities work together to find and explore what they love to create something even more beautiful -if that's even possible. One of the many amazing things about life, I believe
I have spent the WHOLE of the Covid lockdown filming a miniature mechanical knight chasing a clockwork mouse.
I was starting to thing how absurd this self-inflicted challenge/torture now looks on my calendar, a summer spent in the dark, watching the whole summer pass from the mere shadows under the studio door, but this reassured me that sometimes, things just take as long as they take... especially as in my case, in February when I started... I had ABSOLUTELY no idea where to start!
BRAVO and Thank you for the reassurance. 🏆
Fantastic. I always check for the title design, though in film school, it never came up as a topic. When it's done well, title design is like an "on ramp" to the experience, and just as memorable as parts of the movie. Kudos Dan Perri!
Very interesting. I too wish there was more documentaries out there to shed more light on it. My brother is a sign painter and I can pick out his work almost 100% of the time.
Please have his name written on the title and not just in the description box. The man and his thought process deserve wider recognition!
This is why Graphics Matters. Wow so well explained.
I'm so convinced that the movie industry is my passion

Hii
I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Perri a few months ago, such an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers :)
Prometheus is one of my favourite title openings of all time, deserved a Title Design award.
Interesting. I've noticed there's art in titles and wondered about it. Why this way or that way, why here on the screen and not there, why that font or how they transition. How they reflect the mood or theme of the movie. I knew someone sat around and designed it, but I didn't know it was a specialy.
You wouldn't use the title sequence to a Sergio Leone spaghetti western to introduce "2001." And the sequence to "Alien" is a puzzle, the one to "The Thing" (Carpenter's) is also a puzzle but just cataclysmic. All of them setting a mood.
On a different note, I remember seeing a documentary just about the font "Helvetica." It's probably around, how it revolutionized public signage and the like. An hour-long treatment of one font! And we never noticed it. Cool stuff.
This whole channel is like a Digital Dictionary, for a Media Student, who is studying Art, who the Film Industry creates for their audience!
I've seen his name on films for decades. It's weird to see and hear him in the flesh for the first time!
Wonderful insight into Dan's process and ongoing career - what an amazing talent. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool! Film is such a beautiful and complicated process!
I am also learning how to become a title designer. I was also fascinated by a documentary on the late, great Saul Bass. I have a few titles already made. I am also a screenwriter/would-be filmmaker and I have a few titles already made on the screenplays I have already written. This is an excellent video!
Awesome!! I love the alternate star wars design.
Thank you, for making the star wars opening titles! :D
What a tranquil video, loved it. Graceful man.
I'd like to get his opinion on the trend of shifting all the credits - even the title - to the end of the film. Do some filmmakers feel the credits are cluttering up or interfering with the cinematography?
(Just a little pet peeve of mine. I'd like to see at least the film title at the beginning, or have it be the first thing I see after the movie's over. I'm sure he would, too, since sometimes half the theatregoers have already left by the time the title shows up on the screen.)
This trend upsets me as well. A good opening title sequence can ease the viewer into the world of the movie and set the tone and pace of what follows. Diving headlong into the story without any titles or credits makes it more difficult to get immersed and assumes the viewers have such poor attention span that they wouldn't be able to handle a few minutes of non-story content.
This guy need a full documentary made on him .
The title is a bit misleading. It’s not a making-of but more like a portrait of Mr. Perri. I expected an insight into using optical banks and superimposing titles on celluloid film. But it’s well done still.
Dan Perri ...great legend!
2 to 3 Months, Wow, I under appreciated titles big time.
Very interesting...would love to learn even more about the subject!
I love his cool and amazing design signtitles. To the moviemaking.
What a voice, too
Shoot, I wanted to hear more. Worst part was when it finished.

Dork.
For real it was so interesting.
Very cool and insightful
Excelente. Thank you from Brazil.
0:21 I bet it was fun making that particular title card.
How about giving him a challenge, try to make an awesome title by using comic sans.
Malik Hansen yay another hhhaaaatttteeeerrrr Comic Sans is horrriiiibbblllleee
Yeah wouldn't be a challenge to him at all, because he actually knows all about Comic Sans's strengths, while this idiot doesn't even realize they exist.
Wonderful work 👍
Sir,your work is awesome! Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts with us.😃
i love big tittles, you know, right in your face... but sometimes i prefer smaller tittles
i read titties.. lmao AHAHAHA
"Famous TITLES, Mr. Connery!" :P haha
That was the point haha
ajdc88 tittles man are the best

Was that a deliberate pun?? (I mean in respect of the definition of the actual word "tittle")

Thank you for putting together a playlist of this work. I've subscribed to your channel.
I agree with his notion that having one style as a designer is not the one and only way to do it. Especially for the kind of job he does and the age we live in, people get bored of the same stuff fast.
Such inspiration!
I love this! I'm an aspiring filmmaker and would love to have my personal title designer! Don't have the funds for it tho :[
Very insightful
Really cool!
"Terry Mallick"
isn't that what everyone calls him?
I Think Dan Perri is the only person Called Terrence Malick "Terry"!
George Lucas called him that too.
🎬🎬🎬🎬🎥🎥🎥 How do film titles are design who can I communicate with? Where to start , & how to design film titles I need to know , & where's the place to do it
This is awesome.
His workis amazing. I won't say he's talented because that wouldn't do justice to how hard he has been working. It's practice. Btw just imagine how much those star wars drafts are worth lol
Hi Scroer! Thanks for the kind words. I'm now on UA-cam if you want to learn more about my work.

Unsung hero
That was an excellent video
Great stuff and what was the longest title for a movie is their a rule ?
cool stuff.. interesting
3:16 anyone felt the music as *Isolated System - Muse* ?
goals
Greatest ever!!
DAMN, WISH HE WAS MY GRANDPA
you're so amazing
This applies to Steam Greenlight. If the image, which often has the title in it look good it probably is a well made game. This is how I found Scorn for example. I would never have pressed it if it looked ugly or dumb like most things do there.
wow Iconic
wow just wow
They spend 2 seconds on alternate title cards for star wars?!? I could watch 20 minutes about them alone GO BACK AND INTERVIEW THIS GUY AND GET ALL THE EXAMPLES.
I've now got a UA-cam channel if you'd like to learn more about my work.
Genius
Legend
STAR80 -- i caught that!
Woo, lefty!
Whats the soundtrack at 0:21?
"MY FAULT" I hope soon their will be a movie the title is. "MY FAULT" the story of SINS
music on 0:02 ???
More like *Typography*
This is all well and good but I want talk to the guy who had to put that much effort into the title design of Freddy Got Fingered. LULS
wrg
So sad he designed so many iconic movie titles and he es *struggling* tu publish his book 🙄
I’m sorry, but I saw street artists do better than this man .
