- Special Effects Makeup Artist Howard Berger ("The Chronicles of Narnia") reveals how he creates movie monsters.
In this movie makeup tutorial, he demonstrates the process he uses to create movie makeup that brings characters to life on the big screen.
Berger has worked on such films as "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," "Inglourious Basterds," and "The Green Mile" among others. - Фільми й анімація
Please let this kind of art continue. I dread the day when digital FX takes over altogether and this art is lost. Practical effects should be used when possible...it keeps the art alive, and it also keeps jobs open for those with this kind of talent and skill...and OFTEN OFTEN OFTEN it looks far more realistic.
Digital effects are great to a certain degree yet they just still haven't been able add in what amounts to the inner soul of the said character. I know it sounds cliche yet I believe many know what I'm trying to convey. Digital effects are good for certain things like scenery and many different kinds of characters but it has to be used in conjunction with practical effects for it to be convincing. Just look at the movie The Thing 2011 and you'll see what I mean. The version done in the 1980s with Kurt Russell was a special effects bonanza that actually worked. It looked plausible. It was so damn gross it was 👍😎... I believe digital effects have thier place and they are ill continue to make them better and better. The movies that incorporate the two effects tend to be more believable in my opinion.
am a makeup artist too from Kenya, I wish I could afford to visit your studios. am really inspired
A lot of directors prefer practical effects and there’s always theatres and live shows that will need it
Wow awesome
Howard is my hero and great friend! Honoured to be mentored by him, a wonderful human being and incredible artist. Thank you Academy Originals for sharing our world of special effects, with everyone!
I watch this and hope there will never come a time where C.G.I. and practical artistry can't exist together.
Joshua Katinsky probably not considering some things can only really be done well with one of those but not both.
Joshua Katinsky CGI will always rock
This is just... AMAZING! Mr Howard Berger, I bow to your talent.
Howard is the man! 💜💜 this was great!
Brilliant work.
Some people take scary horror, sci-fi and fantasy movies too seriously. I always viewed them as something entertaining and even exciting. SE makeup artists do a very hard work
Thank you for making this video. Watched the KNB documentary on how KNB effects was created back in the day when all of you artists were together sharing a place and just working, it was very informative and fun to watch, I really wanted to work in the industry but never made connections, still enjoy learning using techniques on haunts.
Amazing !!!
Howard Berger one of the best!
I love this! Great job!
I remember when the movie swamp thing came out and watching it on cable TV. That was a movie where all the costumes were done nicely for an 80's movie.
I watched Face Off growing up to see how makeup effects are done and I really love it. Now, I'm no longer afraid af monsters and only see makeup.

I recently did a short video about an inspiring young SFX makeup artist and Halloween prop builder with Osteogenesis Imperfecta called "My Superpower." The video explores Tiffany Mannings life with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease) and some of the monsters and characters she has created, which draw inspiration from her own life and experiences.
