- Note: This is slightly different to my Endwalker UI setup. However, it all remains true for how I did it.
Join me as I struggle to explain my UI setup and how just... stupid it is. I make a lot of clarifying statements of how I play and how I setup my hotbars. This is explicitly NOT a UI tutorial. Just explaining my setup since it gets asked a lot.

After all those times in the videos of him saying,"here's my UI setup, it'll make sense at 80!" We finally get a UI setup video! Yay!
Well that was more of to say "I will have stuff randomly thrown around at points, that's only because of how i have things at 80" Plus I also say "build your hotbars, your way"

back in my Ragnarok Online days, most hardcore pvp players have their little helpers up to 3 persons just to press some skills

but in all seriousness i agree, find what is most comfortable for you and it will help make the game more enjoyable, i use Q E R F C V G 1 2 3, as well as shift+ and crtl+ variations of those for combat, i cannnnoootttt take my fingers off WASD or the mouse or i get jumbled up
Life is so hard for me, i have to take my hand off the mouse everytime when im doing a ninjutsu but i need to build up my muscle memory to do it faster

I couldn't IMAGINE taking my left hand off the left side of the KB or my right hand off the mouse while playing; as such, I can't imagine playing FFXIV without an MMO mouse. The only stuff i have in 'weird positions' is all my UI hotkeys (quests, equipment, world map, friend list etc) which is all on Numpad, that I feel I can 'safely' move my right hand off the mouse for stuff i'd only need to access out of combat.
It's deeply fascinating seeing how other people do it, even if it seems bonkers as heck to me you've said yourself you've slowly grown into it over 5 years of hard practice and are an ultimate raider, so absolutely more power to you.
That's why I started this video the way I did. I wanted to emphasize how weird this is, and how I've been doing it for 5 years. And how it's all about comfort.
I do it with an FPS mouse. Just use q, e, r, f, g, x and F1 to F4. I now struggle with too many options since I use shift and Alt a lot.y hand is in the general area, but not literally on WSAD. My only use for mouse keys are corps/displacement on rdm, pet actions, and sch emergency tactics.
@@sooprcoomr4828 I use an FPS mouse too, but unfortunately on PS4 it wont register the Mouse buttons (Only happens with FFXIV, other games register them). Would be nice to have them set to modifiers.

Thanks for the legacy movement info. It feels way more comfortable for me coming from Guild Wars 1 which had a similar movement system. I didn't even know this option existed
I just discovered your channel yesterday, and I must say you are my favorite FF14 content creator. This video helped me so much you have no idea
I hope you don't mind your comments section turning into "That's interesting! Here's the weird stuff I do!", but for my own 2c, I've put waaaay too much thought into hotbars (which would have just been better-served practicing them). But it did help me when they were finally organized!
The basic idea is that it's split into 'groups' based on what keys are adjacent to one another. The groups being: [mouse4, mouse5] / [Q, E, R] / [F] / [Z, X, C] / [1, 2, 3] and then modifier keys (shift and alt). One group of two, three groups of three, and one lonely key. So for DRG for example, the AoE combo is [1, 2, 3]. But since NIN only has a two-hit AoE combo, it goes on [mouse4, mouse5]. For BRD and SMN, both DoTs go together on [mouse4, mouse5] because there are two of them, but on the healers, it's on the lonely [F], because there's only one of them. Basic weaponskill combos are usually [Q, E, R]. And for a last example, the stuff you generally want to fit in PLD's physical phase (Fight or Flight, Circle of Scorn, Spirits Within) are [Z, X, C] and the stuff in casting phase (Requiescat, Holy Circle, Holy Spirit) are on Shift+[Z, X, C].
Like I said--- no more or less weird than any other hotbar setup. But this idea of 'grouping' *really* helped me get a hang of playing multiple jobs at once, so maybe it'll help someone else! If I could delete my muscle memory and do it again, I'd probably divide the 12 slots into 2 groups of three, 2 groups of two, and two lonely keys instead.

You are the perfect content creator for ffxiv.
I have a similar philosophy to my bindings (interrupts are always bound to F, filler spells are always bound to E and or 3, movement spells are bound to Z, etc...) but i always keep my left hand planted on the left side of my keyboard, and my right hand planted on my mouse. It may seem limiting at first, but you'd be surprised how much you can bind with only `-5, q, e-t, f,g, z,x,v, f1-f4, plus holding down alt in conjunction with each of those keys (but not with the F keys).
Nice video. It is always interesting for me to see how people play games like wow, ff14 which requires a lot of keybinds. I wouldn't say yours is weird and it is a something of a preference. The people who said so, need to watch Cobrak's video (used to be a WoW player) who binded his movements to arrow keys and some of his skills on numpad. But it works and he was one of the best warlocks.
This is a good video to showcase how different approaches can be at least for me.
First of all thanks for some tipps I will try myself like legacy control (so exited for this one :D) and moving your camera to decenter the character.
Interesting enough I never thought of putting 2 hands on the Keyboard. I usally move with right click pressed to strafe with "A" and "D" and move my cam/char around in a fight. I probably will never be able to use 2 hands on my keyboard because I am left handed and play as such having my right hand on the Keyboard and my left hand on the mouse.
Thats why in my setup I mostly use keys from 1-6 and F1-F4 with several modifiers to get more usage out of these. The most recent and extremely useful improvement I have made was to bind my Mouse side button which I can reach perfectly to "Shift" when I am in the game so that I don't really need to do anything to reach the modifier for AOE skills.
So my Hotbars look similar but not really to yours:
hotbars from top to bottom
hotbar 3:
F1 - F6 and Shift + F1-F6
hotbar 2:
Ctrl + 1-6 and Shift 1-6
hotbar 1:
1-ß (which as explained I dont fully use but kept like this for now) and ^ (circumflex) because it is easy to reach for me because I use my right hand
on the side I have some skills that I most often not use on Alt 1-6
I also have serveral hotbars which I should use for skills with "R", "T", "F" and "G" but these are most of the time used for mounts and such to quickly mount and dismount.
Maybe some could also learn from my settings as it is more difficult to adapt to some things if you are left handed.
This is the most unique way of playing I have ever seen. Ive played mmos for 15-16 years and never saw a playstyle like this. Its fascinating to me. Theres so many ways to play games its pretty crazy.
And I know I'm not alone. At least one other person I know (also a DRG) has this playstyle
@@WeskAlber Ive heard of people combining controllers with either a keyboard or a mouse aswell.
I just have a generic kbm/mouse combo where i spin my camera constantly and mainly turn with the mouse.
I'm just amazed at how empty your hotbars are. I have all of my stuff on 3 hotbars and it shows. teleport, return and limit break are all on the main hotbar, I don't have a macro bar on the side. It's cramped, but it still makes sense.
i mean look at my bottom right. I use all 10 hotbars AND the crosshotbars
wow respect playing that way. I think I did that when I used to play mmos on my '12 macbook pro minus the mouse, because I used the trackpaddddd
Your UI and hotbars feel a little janky but 5 years of muscle memory can make you play very well with any setup. If it works for you, it works for you. :D
I still would suggest you give a try on playing with a controller though. I accidentally got into it because of carpal tunnel syndrome and the two hotbars being too crowded and me not wanting to mess up much with the keyboard shortcuts. I only really made it work with a few guides I found on the Internet but OH BOY it was amazing.
I mained WHM at the time and was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to heal the party properly, but turns out the controller has a lot of not-very-obvious shortcuts. D-Pad up and down selects the party list, which ends up making healing with a controller even better than with a mouse. You can access up to 32 commands on screen and 16 hidden ones with a controller AND the mouse and keyboard still works so you can use all the hotbars for stuff out of the battle, like job shortcuts, macro callouts, etc.
I even found how to improve controller layouts on my own. Maybe I should make a guide.
More power to controller players but I would NEVER play on controller. Do try giving your own advice in a guide though
Also two hotbars? You need 3 minimum for KBM
@@WeskAlber I was still in Heavensward at the time. The hotbars were just getting crowded and the third hotbar had no keybind. I had a controller and was just like "meh, might as well give it a try". My first two or three times trying it wasn't pretty good though. But one guide out there showed me the hidden commands that the controller have and the next attempt was much better.
The biggest hurdle is figuring out how to select the boss, the enemies, the players, how to change the toolbars etc. Once you get that, the rest is easy peasy.
Just had an idea that might be interesting! There was a trend awhile back where streamers used eye trackers for certain stuff. It’d be cool to see how raiders’ eyes dart around during a fight! Not sure if the cursor would actually obstruct your vision, but it seems like it’d be a fun experiment!
Doubt I have the hardware for that, and it would be really boring cuz of how I play lol
WeskAlber mmm I guess so, just googled it and it’s probably too expensive for a one time gimmick. It’ll probably only be useful to help first timers know what they should be paying attention to, but that’s not really an issue in your videos or guides in general
I really wanted this video solely because i love the way your ui looks and fits together lol obviously gonna adjust things to my playstyle and comfort zone but just wanted the reasoning behind everything as well ya know?

I'm trying to optimize my hotbars for myself, and so far I've changed my keybinds to use Shift and Alt instead, which already helps a lot.
Now I'm trying to find a way to play without clicking skills with the mouse, because I tend to be very inconsistent and go from keybind to clicks :p

wow I never knew replacing move left+right with strafe would work so well. and also never knew you could tilt the camera, I always thought cuz I played in 1080p and I couldn't zoom out as much as people who play in 4k
Lol at all the comments about taking the hand off the mouse. I am glad I planned around this! I have 1234 QERF ZXCV (and Shift/Alt) and I put my shortcuts on Ctrl layer.
My mistake, I think, was breaking from the 1x12 shape. I went for the 3x4s and I use 3 of those. That way it's a close match of where the keys actually are on the keyboard. But it gets confusing as hell when you are trying to pair, like, E with Alt+E or something, my eyes need to move ~100 pixels to get to that spot on the adjacent bar.
I am a DRG main (and starter) too and I am kinda proud of what I have achieved in my hotbars despite the flaws. The delicious juicy prize I wanted was to have all my weaponskills in the middle row so that the GCD spin animation would divide my oGCDs: buffs on top and attacks on bottom. With my setup this works out (QERF, Shift QERF Alt QERF) in a visually pleasing way that is not wholly unpractical.
Most hotbars start at the LEFT... mine starts in the MIDDLE. Instead of extending in 1 direction, I extend outward in both directions. This was borne out True Thrust splitting out into Vorpal Thrust and Disembowel combos. It can make things feel messy. My justification is that the main hotbar has the most important cooldowns to watch so I'll put them all right below my feet.
Honestly this game is nearly impossible to play, I have spent way too many hours just doing hotbars/hud/keybinds. Amazing to see people use the same tools in so many different ways.
I am gonna steal some of these HUD ideas I think. Seeing target bar at the top made me think "how often do i really need to check the target's hp% or buffs? I can just use floating hp bars and focus target." And I like the thought of having party and enemy lists in the corner... right now they feel a bit crammed into my hotbar area (lined up hp bars with target bar) and there is just too much clutter.
It's such fucking visual soup, every time i play a different game and i see how light and simple it looks i feel a tinge of frustration that ffxiv is not nearly as easy on the eyes. The monster hunter crossover really had me thinking about this for example. The combat experience in those games is smooth as fuck and i kind of miss it. If only we had those lovely 1.0 movement animations.
You can customize a lot of stuff. Turn down player animations to limited and such

For me personally, I need to have everything in reach of my left hand where wasd is, because I always have my right hand on my mouse for comfort. And certain keys always have the same or similar abilities between jobs. For example:
QERTFXC12345
QERTFXC12345 (shift)
QERTFXC_2345 (ctrl)
Note: the ctrl+1 is replaced with ctrl+spacebar because it's the way i wanted to use my mount. the reason my mount is there is because i like to have a different mount based on the job i am playing for thematic purposes and other complications regarding hotbar sharing
ctrl+R and shift+1 are Sprint and Limitbreak. No real reason. They've just always been that way for me and are engrained into my muscle memory
As for the rest of the keys. Q, E and R (as well as all shift and ctrl versions) are main attacks. For example, my Ninja main combo is Q, E, R, then if I need to use the alternative combo finisher, it's shift+R. Mug and Dream Within a Dream are shift+Q and shift+E. All those abilities are nicely close together for easy cooldown reference. ctrl+Q is always a healer DoT. 1, 2 and 3 are for Ten, Chi and Jin because I felt it just made the most sense, and with other jobs that tend to use certain abilities that aren't direct attacks, 1, 2 and 3 will be used the same way. (summoner with ifrit, titan and garuda for example). Usually there are no other abilities that would require the same treatment to be placed on shift+2 and 3 or ctrl+2 and 3, so those those will end up being special buttons like macros
C, shift+C and ctrl+C are always and have always been AoE attacks (specifically area AoE. AoE abilities that require a target but can't fit will go with Q, E or R sometimes)
All the X's are usually specific heals or restorative abilities. Think second wind or esuna, or for specific cases like Paladin's heal or Warrior's health increase. On healers, main heals go with Q, E and R, and only special use heals on X. Think the single target lily heal on White Mage
F and T are kind of flexible. But the T's are usually stuns, interrupts, sleeps. Things like that. F is for specialized attacks or other special abilities. For example, the Ninjutsu button for Ninja, or Transpose for Black Mage. It's kind of got this weird selection of abilities that go there, but it makes sense to me which is all that matters.
For all versions of 4 and 5, they are buffs. It's that simple. Things like swiftcast, feint and lucid dreaming always occupy the same button between jobs so I can use them without thinking and always know where they are
And that's that. I doubt anyone would read this all, but I felt like sharing and maybe someone else might wanna use it
I get your monitor setup and how you play, its how I play, with a few tweaks to my own UI. My eyes never leave the middle of the screen when I'm on my MCH, and that helps me with my combos/placements.
i got a MMO mouse... i use CTRL, SHIFT and ALT as hotbar modifier... make your own set up, if you see something cool integrate it into yours
I do the same thing - I bought a Zelotes C12 that has 6 buttons on the left side.
I use Legacy Mode with ESDF - My keybinds are QWRTYUGHVBNM and I have mouse buttons bound to CTRL, ALT, and Shift.
For Tanks/DPS I put the Enemy List immediately to the right of the buttons so I can keep track and the Party List is up and further right.
For Healer the Party List is immediately to the right and the Enemy List is above that.
I only switched to this in Late May so I still make mistakes but it is definitely a vast improvement over the way I used to play.
I got a first speed pad (Belkin N52) around 2006 and will never game on a keyboard again. More comfortable, more efficient, fully programmable and macroable, easier one finger movement with the thumbstick and saved my carpal tunnels allowing me to go for endless gaming sessions without discomfort. The left hand and wrist never move an inch. Combined with a 15+ button mouse and youre golden.
I place most of my cooldowns on numpad and use my right hand coz I am mostly using my mouse to turn the camera around. After showing it to my friend he told me he's not comfortable with my hotbar. So yeah, every UI setup is different for every player. So I don't know why there are some who would criticize other player's hud layout
I tend to NEVER get my right hand off my Mouse I Just try and make sure I can use Shift or Alt to make sure I have enough keys to press with my left hand (sorry for my bad english lol)
Your UI may be wacky by normal standards but results speak for themselves lol just goes to show that different things truly work for different people. Personally I find controller or an mmo mouse the most natural feeling for myself. Using q and e to cycle through enemies is probably the weirdest thing I do. Sometimes I think switching to keyboard only would be a fun thing to do in case my mouse breaks

It kinda doesn’t matter how your hotbar is laid out. It’s just practice and good reachability.
The biggest takeaway I’ve made from this video is mostly the movement style, I have my keybinds and hotbars a bit different so I almost never have to remove my right hand from my mouse so I can very easily spin the camera to check things, so I have all information more centralised and if I need to check something I can turn the camera quickly. The main issue I struggled with was in keeping similar abilities across jobs in similar places I had some awkward scenarios like trying to put saber dance next to en avant and accidentally dying from misclicking the later.
Finally seeing someone else who uses the F keys! Great advice here...as usual.
I essentially play like you, both hands on the keyboard and use mouse to turn the camera maybe (I don’t like using arrows) but I have every skill keybind to the number pad so my hand is closer to the mouse, so everything is number pad, ctrl + number pad, alt, shift etc... I use my Fs to switch between team mates and my 1-10 for my buffs
you don't need to do this but as a lvl 30 new player id love a vid or just a text response of gear progration. pretty much should I ever bother farming or just do msq all the way to shadowbringer using what drops from rewards and not worry till end game 300 hours from where I am now :)
Dungeons mostly keep you covered up to 50. 50/60/70/80 is all about tomestone gear, and your job quests give you a good starting level cap set. Tomestone gear lasts up to 55/65/etc of the next expansion here dungeon gear and HQ crafted starts to surpass

I just shoved everything to the middle ish of the screen and hid my 3 combat hotbars and made an extra one just to see my cooldowns/other very specific important moves. If I dont hide my hotbars I keep looking at it while doing my rotation so I just get it down to muscle memory. I made a second hud layout to have my entire hotbar and money, inventory and other unimportant things for when outside of an instance
Wow, playing like that you might as well go full Keyboard.... You would have to put(or set a better position) camera keys and zoom in and zoom out in the keyboard though.

I know I can use letters, hence my moving with WASD. I zoom out my camera all the way so I can see everything around me at all times

Dito. I was against controller at first but once I tried it and found a crossbar setup that made sense to me I couldn't imagine going back.

The moment you released your hand from the mouse made my eyes bleed. You would benefit a lot with a MMO mouse. I have 2 HUD of 4x3 to represent my mouse buttons and all the zxcvbnm row of the keyboard to target allies. Once you get the feeling which button does what you can fit everything wherever. Also I tend to have normal attack rotation without shift (control is weird and alt makes me alt tab a lot) and AoE over the single target with shift. Control I may use it for buffs, and I'm currently using an alt hotbar but u only click on it (sprint, mount, emotes).
But seriously releasing the mouse is a sin

I think it would be possible to share the layouts, they are saved in files that could be uploaded... then someone downloads it into their folder, easy
i use 4 hotbars and for my tank\dps it's 1st single target, 2nd ogcd, 3rd aoe, 4th abilities. for healers is 1st st, 2nd aoe, 3rd dps and 4th abilities. i'm a filthy mouse clicker too since with long gcd in this game is not a problem. 2nd bar always with alt modifier and 3rd with ctrl, that's something that i use since playing daoc in 2001. 4th i use shift since i never had to use 4 bars in any mmo tbh -_-

Weren't role actions named something else before? I remember playing way back before rogue/ninja was released (lord that feels like forever ago now) and remember "role" actions being there but it was more like just shared actions you had to play other jobs to unlock?
Also side note, anyone remember having to manually choose which stats to upgrade on level up lol
Role Actions entirely replaced Cross Class. Different systems.
@@WeskAlber Yes Thank You! That's what it was Cross Class lol. It's been a hot minute and obviously forgot the name. But yeah I guess saying it was named something else is a major oversimplification since the only thing they share is both involve skills used for multiple jobs. Btw thanks for all your videos. I'm finding a new enjoyment from the game simply because I actually try to learn the jobs and improve rather than pushing things

I notice with your movements as DRG was based on playing with people who know what they are doing for the most part, how do you keep your camera positioned right when people spin the boss or the boss moves a lot which messes with your Positionals? Do you just spam True North and hope the tank keeps the boss facing one way? that's my main issue as DRG is hoping the tank/boss stays still.
You kinda can't get your positionals no matter what in that case. You can't realistically delay your GCD for the positionals and sometimes you just HAVE to True North. I will attempt to move into position if the boss is turned wrong but that's not always doable.
It's a dance you have to learn no matter what

So uh. I tried the control+arrow keys, and now I don't know whether or not it's back at default or not...

I used to use a mmo mouse easy to use, but currently with out a mmo mouse caus they break to often...
I use my lefthand with a range from 1 to = in combo with ctrl shift up to 8
Ff14 is my first mmo and i just get so anxious about letting go of the mouse even tho i should
Why not put the enemy HP bar at the bottom where everything else is so you really never have to look to the top

Whats the benefit of using strafe instead of running left/right? Is it to keep facing the enemy or something?
Straight lines versus curved lines. What is the shortest distance out of any AoE? A straight line. Run Left/Right will cause the camera to slowly pan and cause you to also turn slightly, making the dodge harder or impossible depending on the AoE.
This also pre-dates the addition of the "Disable Camera Pan" option they recently added. I technically have a more up-to-date version of this video that also goes through all settings.

Do you place skills on your hotbar as you learn them or before. I prefer to have them all on bar so I can get used to how I want my skils to be before I get them.
As I learned them. 5 years ago, half of these skills and jobs didn't even exist.
I got a corsair scimitar and kinda coppied your placement os skills on the bars but as i went into the other classes somethings didnt make much sense (like diferent keybinds for arms lenght on different classes) so I placed them as I like and be done with it xD.. everyone has his way with keybinds.. and as long as it works, it works
Like I said, Role Actions didn't always exist. So they kinda just... got thrown around. Plus I only raid as DRG so it got the most love
I'm getting through msq for now, but I too main dragoon and it's insane to me how different everyone's setups are. I have a question though, you said you play on legacy but I have difficulty understanding why you mapped strafing buttons to a and d? Regular a and d mappings for legacy already allow you to move left and right at full speed, without having to sacrifice diagonal movement backwards. I'm asking because I'm still not satisfied with my movement and trying to see if I missed something about these options.
Turn Left/Right are not straight lines, they're curves. it spins your camera where Strafing does not
@@WeskAlber Ooh, I get it now. I mapped my controls so that I only ever use left hand for keyboard in battles, so it never was an issue for me as I could rotate the camera any time and not worry about it curving. Thanks for the quick response!

Yeah. I mostly swapped back to my old layout
I know this is very unpopular but i only use WASD 12345 Z Q and i click othet skills with my mouse cursor
My boyfriend hates the way I set up my bars, but it works for me.
And i was always wondering... why people use = for their skills, youre not the only one. Maybe because i never take my hand of my mouse, i always asked myself "How can they reach that key with their left hand? Now i feel like a complete noob. And i ve been playing MMORPGs for the past 7 years....
Edit: Still not getting over it, laso just wanted to let you know, i though for legit 3 seconds you were trolling when you showed your openener, until i saw that the keys actually aligned with what happened on screen.

Nah don't worry, a LOT of people are... confused and surprised. Like I said, I've been doing this setup since level 1, since the day I joined. This is just... how I've always done it.
Is there a way to disable the right click of the party bars? I hold right click to change camera angles and sometimes I accidentally right click them.

@@WeskAlber oh, around 3:26 you mentioned you have your debuffs right behind the buffs so i thought they might overlap but i just figured right now you probably changed it from left to right. Thanks for the help!
@@25cats I have them left and right yeah. So they never reach each other unless I'm in like, Ultimate and everyone is spamming buffs and defensives

@@WeskAlber Basically just wondering about the enemy debuffs, having to manage dots with it up top is a bit distracting when everything is at the bottom or watch for TA's/Chain strat etc. Placing it somewhere next to my character tends to overlap during alliance raids, do u swap uis for different scenarios?
@@sagebaram5951 Nope, i just keep a mental timer for my dots, and timing with TA/etc is min/max at that point and is usually more of "just do the same thing every pull" once you know timing. No point to try that in pugs cuz you can't expect them to be perfect

@@WeskAlber I managed to get “Left W Cross Hotbar” and “Right W Cross Hotbar” to show up and position separately, but for some reason they only have 4 buttons each, not 8 like yours do
