2:16 If you are having trouble getting the cube project to work, just make sure after you select all the faces, press "U" and then it'll show "cube projection" and just click that :D
I was about to give up on a project because I thought making a sci fi city just for a background would take waaayyy too long. You inspired me to go for it. Thank you!!
Adding short DOF on a scenery will make it look like a scale model. Your brain is used to having everything sharp at that distance and will see it as something small because of the blur. It's not always bad, but something to remember if you want it to look like a realistic photo.
You're definitely right. I enjoy using lots of DOF to give scenes more depth to make them more interesting but too much of it is not ideal for photorealistic renders.
Thanks for the breakdown, the Scatter plug-in I will defenetely use in future project. Just a tip - the first thing I noticed when I saw the final render (and what broke the illusion actually), is that the cars all look the same, more variety in shape and maybe color would help to sell the picture.
Thanks for the feedback! I created that scene as a concept for a short film that I'm working on so I'll definitely keep that in mind while creating the final product.
Real nice tutorial. Depth of Field often makes things look like models to me - that's how lens in the real world work - over a certain distance everything would be in focus (infinity) so in a scene like this really nothing would be out of focus - at least not caused by the lens so adding DoF afterwards just makes the scene look like a model - or in your case i think it makes it look like it's an animation and it's not trying to be a real scene - which works really nicely, it could be a scene for a sci-fi story based on a graphic novel for instance. I personally prefer using Blender to create scenes which are not supposed to be hyper real
Great tutorial, scatter objects addon looks real useful. A bit curious about your default cubes, they seem to have edge highlights and shadows unlike the standard is it some kind of addon?
Excellent and very cool! I'm working on a game that works on both PC/macOS and webXR, so I need to keep everything low-poly. I've been using tutorials like yours (for developing complex-geometry cities, landscapes, caverns, etc.) and converting the results into screenshot skybox backgrounds--and you've given me some great ideas for my next skybox.🤠
I can't adjust the textures by scaling like you do at 2:25, I see de texture image on the UV editor but I can't adjust my object, any clue on what am I missing? I think I've followed every step on the video until then. Anyway, nice video and thank you for sharing it!

@@nightowledits5708 Ian Hubert has a great apocalyptic city tutorial - you could use that to create some buildings and use the same scatter method from this video to create a quick city
@@PopNerdStudio that guy is fast AF 🤣 I couldn't keep up. I hope you will make a seperate tutorial for this one.... Anyways I'm gonna give it shot... You never know what you can achieve before you don't achieve it.
this is so nice! im using it to make a background for a grase pencil animation! still trying to figure out how to add the sky texture background and a couple of other things tho. I'm guessing that the little spaceships are just a collection following a curve.
Glad this was helpful! I just duplicated a bunch of cars and keyframed the cars lol but yeah a collection following a curve would be much more efficient hahah
how do you get the buildings to show up exactly where you draw the scatter line? I can put a line in the middle of the plane and the buildings will go 50m away/around that line, but never on the actual line that I drew
how did you make uv's in form of a building? after doing cube projection all the stuff from my building did not group like that.. like each part is living it's own life and does not make a form of a building.
In the beginning, how did you extrude the block without the annoying lines? If I grab and elongate the object becomes distorted. but the lines where I extruded are visible
awesome tutorial man! for some reason everytime after i try to scatter on a basic plane it keeps rotating the buildings even with rotation and normal rotations off. any ideas??
It is possible. Generally you can run blender on almost any standard laptops out there but theyre hindered by their graphics card during rendering , which for you isnt the case :)
I tried to scatter the buildings but the shape of all the buildings that i selected changes on the plane. Some gets thinner or wider. Any idea where i went wrong?
I found out how to fix it! You see on the plane there are several weird tall buildings stuck together? (Those buildings look like one giant building lol) scale those with S and pressing x or y to change the thickness.
@@mistakd3771 I found out how to fix it! On the (white floor) plane you added, see those several weird taller than the rest buildings stuck together? Actually I've found quite a few problems with the scatter tool. The density won't adjust correctly = 0.1 too few / 0.2 too many / close and the scatter tool seems to remember the previous scatters so it's scattering objects that aren't selected. Am I missing something? Is there are scatter reset?
As an experiment I've just started a new scene with new objects and scattered them and Scatter is still scattering the objects from your tutorial. I'll try restarting Blender
@@andyklyen6885 Huh, I've never encountered this problem before - that's weird. I would recommend maybe scaling up your plane if you encounter this problem again.

True, although defocussing some objects that are very close to the camera is still physically correct, and will add depth to your image.

if you don't find the object scatter pressing f3, go to preferences addons and search for scatter, mark the box and enjoy!

Using a particle system definitely gives you more control but I would say it's overkill in most cases - scatter objects is just a lot more simple imo
