  • I take a look at this aging kit, is it a classic or is it past its sell by date?

Built a series of the 1/570 scale kits as a kid - Titanic, Queen Mary, and Bismarck. Brings back fond memories.

I built this kit when I was 11 back in 1976. I was extremely disappointed that my model didn't turn out like the box art, but my modelling skills were what you'd expect of a kid with no experience. I ended up getting my brother's bb pistol and a large puddle in the parking lot of the abandoned factory down the street and set about making her sail her first and last voyage 😂😂😂😂

Hi Jason!! What old model builder couldn't love this kit ?!!! There may be others, but I know Tom's Model Works out of California, make a 1/570 etch set aimed at the Revell Titanic. It may transfer well to this kit. The railings and ladders/stairs should look the part. It's a nice little set. Another very thorough and informative review!! Thanks Jason!🍻

Interesting, Jason. I went to a wedding reception on the QM. There's a huge entertainment complex now next to the ship. Cheers

Great review, Jason. I'm currently working on this and the Airfix QE as troopships. This kit gets a lot of criticism, but for 1962, it's not bad at all. White Ensign makes a photo etch set for this kit and the QE. It has the degaussing cable, rails and doors and davits. Spruces everything up a bit.

I recently built this kit and , for an old dog, it goes together pretty well, my biggest disappointments were the moulded on railings, im tempted to build another and remove them and replace but it will be quite a bit of work and im not sure I have the patience lol
If you paint it up pretty well and add all the rigging that the ship has around the funnels etc it does make a difference. I just wish a manufacturer would give this ship a go in 1/400 maybe to go with the QM2, although i think the era of model ship liners is long gone (if you dont count titanic of course, because we always need more of those 🙄😆)

I built the revell cutty sark a few months ago , it's a kit of the same age and I had never seen so much flash on a kit in my life.

I built Airfix Victory a few years ago, the flash and sink holes made for interesting building shall we say. Goodness knows what the kit must be like now.

@@ukdave57 we didn't know any better in those days spending our pocket money and paper round money.

I guess that happens when 60 year old molds have never been updated or repaired.....

@@GRAYR189 exactly the molds are just so warn out, yet the kit still sells in volume so why they don’t re-tool it? They wouldn’t let a Spitfire tool get so old!

@@ModelkitStuff I'm wondering why there's never been another Queen Mary kit produced! It's not like she's an unknown subject! I think she'd be fabulous in 1:350 or even 1:200 scale! You could assemble her in one of three versions:. RMS Queen Mary, HMTS Queen Mary (troopship), or S.S. Poseidon! C'mon, Trumpeter! Get on this!

Certainly some odd scales out there. Makes sense if they are working to box sizes. Thanks again for the review.

Hi Jason, This would definitely be considered a vintage kit. Still great fun to build even though there isn't that much detail. I had to laugh when you said a few pieces came off the sprue. It looks like you won't need your nippers much on this one. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

It would sure be nice if someone put out a series of 1/350 liners. Maybe one from each country. Queen Mary, United States, Normandie, Bremen, Rex and Rotterdam. Too bad it's such a small interest market. With todays tooling there could be some really amazing kits. Still, you could beat this kit into something respectable with some PE and a lot of X-acto blades.
