You should not leave the ignition on - you should start it as soon as the glow plug light goes out. Glow plugs will be cold by the time you are starting it - they only heat for a few seconds. Sounds like it's having problems building up fuel pressure though. It's a PD engine so could be fuel pump in tank, or possibly injector seals.
Change your glow plugs. I had a Ford Mondeo mk2 TD that did the same. I found that two of the glow plugs had burnt out. I replaced them and the car started first time with no problems after that.
Right, I've the same but when mines hot... So cold starts on the button, but when it's warm it dose what yours is turns over for ages.... But I hear the same clicking from the passages side when I turn on the ignition!! Mines a 54 plate tdi gt ( just hit 10000 miles)
You need a new battery and/or starter. When cold, the ECU waits for a certain cranking speed before firing the injectors. However after 5 seconds ir so it just fires them anyway. It's an emissions thing that hou can map out. Clicking is climate control flap motors. Very common 'fault' which rarely causes any issues.
Battery defo. I have been charging my batrery everyday by driving around 20 to 30 mins past week. RAC helped me with jump start 2 weeks ago. I ordered a new battery today. I changed the battery in 2019 Dec with 3 years gurantee. Euro car parts accepted to refund. My mistake bought tye shit Lion battery.
hi, I just started experiencing such cold start issues on my MK5 1.9 TDI (BKC) like 2 days ago. It will struggle initially, though once started, each subsequent start is just instant/perfect. scanned it using vcds today, no errors are reported at all. did you find a solution to this issue? regarding the 'clicking sound' you're hearing from the passenger glove-box area, it's the 'recirculator flap motor' being stuck/faulty.... the clicking sound may go away if you press the 'recirculate' button though ;) EDIT: well, it turned out my cold start issue was actually because of a failing tank fuel pump not delivering enough fuel... I also started having rough idle issues as well as having a brutal vibration when idling in neutral... replaced the tank pump and everything's back to normal :)
Hi there i'v got the same issue. Wich of the fuel pumps did you change?? There are 2 of them the main on connected to the cylinder head and the secondary under the passenger sests. Thank you in advance

Its a fuel injector... you can hear it is running on 3 pistons

Hi John - did you get this sorted in the end? We've got the exact same issue
I had the exact same thing just bought 4 new glow plugs and it starts with no hesitation all the time

Another possibility usCamshaft sensor. Common fault

Did you find the problem
Glow plugs ain’t gonna do shit if ignition is left on for 3 mins 🤣
change fuel filter or car battery or both
Its a Layz start don't try anything else and waste your money
Need a service
No, a service will not fix this.
