  • This is my second attempt at doing the "Resin Petri Technique" using resin, alcohol inks, and white alcohol ink to create a look like strange growths in a petri dish. Here I demonstrate... exactly what NOT to do. I was seriously considering not putting this video up, but I thought showing me making mistakes might be helpful to someone. Or possibly amusing.
Resin used: "Craft Smart Liquid Gloss" resin
Transparent Alcohol Inks: Tim Holtz Ranger Adirondak in the colours Purple Twilight, Currant, Meadow, and Sunshine Orange
White Alcohol Ink: Jaquard Pinata White

thank you for sharing this video Kerr. However, I was under the impression that you were supposed o use a torch or heat gun to pop the air bubbles before you added your inks?? he one and only time I made coasters like these, that's what I did and he coasters came out fine. so I'm confused now at what you did incorrectly?!?!?

Using a torch to pop bubbles needs to be done very lightly and briefly (I actually got criticised about my technique in the previous video as using the torch too much!). It is only supposed to just kiss the surface and be gone; just enough to pop the bubbles. What I did with the heat gun went far beyond that, especially the second time I used it, where I aggressively pushed the hot air down through the resin enough to move it around. That *temporarily* made the resin thinner, but the heat also sped up the chemical reaction which causes the resin to cure. The faster it cures, the sooner the resin thickens and then becomes solid. For a Petri pour, you want the resin to stay as thin as possible for as long as possible, since the thinner the resin, the more the inks can flow through it. What I did caused the opposite to happen -- the resin became thick, quickly. That was my big mistake.
