It needs some work but shouldn't take much to get on the road!

This was sitting behind a repair shop in Debary! I make deliveries to that shop and would always see it sitting out back.

Runs like a champ , maybe some carb issues , no problem .
Definitely needs the carb cleaned, check timing, valves, points, etc.
I haven't seen a mechanical oil pressure gauge in a long time. I thought the WIRE was just not hooked up on account of incomplete wiring haha!
Haha, I double checked to see it was a mechanical gauge but didn’t think about tracing the tube to make sure it wasn’t broken.

Yeah baby cool Baja, i love the narrow eye, the first of three i built was one, the Baja's are gone now, but i do have 80%of the parts to build one, and the fiber glass i have is a, (you guessed it) a narrow eye, i love it when you get a great deal on a VW that you can roll the engine over by hand, you can usually have them running in a few minutes, talk to you soon Gary

Oh for sure! I have about 5 hours into it now and all I have left to do is wire the blinkers… not bad for all custom wiring!
@@VWJawbreaker Yeah, those EMPI universal kits are pretty easy to work with. They are a simplified installation, even less parts than stock!

Be sure to get a bus brake master cylinder weld all spot welds big brake cylinders in the front going the rear vice versa and you'll definitely enjoy the IRS independent rear suspension my last one was a 69 as well

Yes sir, that was my exact thinking as well! Needs wiring, brakes gone through, engine gone through a little, minor rust repair and it’s done!

Where are you located?
Phoenix AZ, downtown, I do have my trike based on the 67 Beatle I bought new from my combat check from when I was in Vietnam, when I got home again I had found out that my older brother had rolled it, it was a mess, so I turned it into a trike, less than 800 miles on it at the time, over 600,000 miles on it now, I just rebuilt the frame into something that will be better offroad and looking more mad max style, now it will fit in Wasteland warrior meets out in the desert in California

I LOVE that car. Brings back memories of the 80s when one of these was parked on every street in New Brighton (beachside suburb where I live). Looks like you guys have have a similar project to Duckman in terms of a wiring mess.

Great deal, Gary! you can certainly pimp that one up, a lot simpler than the Sickxty. You can switch the oil pump with one of CB Performance’s full flow models and then just run some lines to the remote oil filter and you’ll be set. No need to drill and tap the block (you always can with the motor in the car using Gene Berg’s method) if you want.
Now adjust valves, timing and it will get there.

I think I do have an in and out cb pump here…. That’s a great idea as it looks like the oil pump is leaking. Wouldn’t hurt to swap them out that’s for sure.
Valves were right on the money, timing and carb adjustment took care of most of the stumbles. 👍

Yes sir! They saved the body tag off of the spare tire well they took the tag off and put it in the front trunk area.

Wow you guys scored… This brings back a ton of memories for me my first car was a 69 Baja with a one piece fiberglass front end super lightweight. Gas tank was in the rear deck under the back window
Wheels were centerlines big fat ones on the back with 31x 10.5x 15 all-terrain BF good rich. And skinny pizza cutters upfront like a 31 x 4 1/2 x15 It had a nasty 1835 with Dual Weber’s and straight cut gears and a 20 inch stinger with no baffle It was pretty rowdy. Unfortunately my mom saw me doing a wheelie in it and since I was on her insurance that was the last time I saw my car she told me to find a ride to school the next day and when I got home from school it was gone. But she couldn’t stop my VW addiction I’ve had several others since then including a gorgeous 72 Ghia and a 65 bus project.

There’s a 3” body lift on this that makes it seem higher.

@@nitewatch2.027 now that I’ve been in a bug with a body lift, I’m not a fan due to how it affects the seating, shifter, etc.
Hell yeah that's a sweet little Baja! Good to see the next generation out there getting some oil on their hands 😄 tell your boy to keep up the good work! Man I remember the only Baja I built, I made a teepee style exhaust out of j tubes that slid right into a stock muffler. Anyways I connected those two tubes together and put one of those flappers on the exhaust and even though I knew it was there I would always forget and come up to a stop sign and hear ting ting ting and wonder for a second what the heck is that.lol my brain needed a few seconds hahaha

Sounds like a cool exhaust you built for your Baja and I agree, the flapper makes me freak out a tad thinking there’s something going on in the engine 😂😂
@@VWJawbreaker you gotta love that, it's always cool when someone is excited to learn! It was a pretty cool exhaust/car, built it when I was 19 I think making 8.50 working at schucks auto supply. Built the whole car with bits and pieces I got for free or cheap, didn't have much money back then. It had a low compression 1500 I got for free that had both heads lifted and was caught on fire. Tore that motor down, cleaned it up and resealed it and it was a good little runner! I'll have to post about it on Instagram maybe tomorrow. I ended up giving it to a good friend of mine for his birthday and he still has it even though a tree fell on its roof!

Yeah it sold quick. I listed it for a very fair price, I wasn’t looking to make a killing on it. Unfortunately it didn’t fit into the family like we had hoped for so it was time to pass it on.

@@VWJawbreaker Gary… been wrenching on the Baja .. still trying to dial a center mount Weber style carb. Today was much better than It’s been. Lowered my float more for our fuel out west… cause 2 weeks ago no matter what jets and airs I put In still couldn’t get the burble out. I cranked down my fuel pressure .. I really got to test it. So jetting….
It’s a 44… had 30 mm vent I ran F7 170 airs and 130 mains. 60 idles. It ran ok. On power great idles fine. For a cammed 1835. I’ve always had a burble sound. Hate it. So I went to 28mm vents crisper.. but still that burble..hmm looking at F11 emulsions… did a 200 air 140 main…. It’s TON better. But I got to make a freeway run and check plugs. Keep ya posted.
@@patar7999 hard to say what the sound is without hearing it.
F7 vs F11 only difference is when the emulsion tube rich end up the mixture. I’d definitely make some runs and check your plugs to see how it’s running. You could always pull the jet stack out and drive it around on the idle jets and see how it does. When you get too high in the rpm band you’ll know the jet stacks aren’t there and it’ll help keep you on the idle circuit.
Just a thought to maybe help dial ya in some more, 60 idles seem big even for a called 1835.
@@VWJawbreaker yeah wish I could send a video buddy. I hear ya.. I’ve been messing around with that main stack out.. but haven’t driven it like that. It seems to like the 60 idles … doesn’t puff black smoke. It’s getting a lot closer! but as a back up. Got a set of kadrons to be rebuilt by kaddie shack.
@@patar7999 center mount IDF’s are tricky to be honest. Kads would be a great backup plan for sure.

clean the idle jet . correct the timing. don't you have a glass in line fuel filter ?
We were doing things one at a time to see what little it needed. I’m not a fan of glass fuel filters at all, seen to many break years back.

Those tires were 31x10.5x15.
Too big for a stock engine and bug trans. I ended up putting 235/75/15 on the rear later on.

Had to watch this one more than ounce. Lot of nice upgrades. I really like that tinted sunroof. Can you tell me if it originally had a sunroof? What are the dimensions? Mine has the sliding sunroof but I rather have one like yours and not have the drain holes to worry about.
I’ll try to get you a measurement soon. It looks like a factory sunroof, it pops open in the back so I’m thinking it may not be factory. Hard to say without tearing into the headliner. We had a hard storm last night and this one does leak a little so I’ll be needing to dive into this soon.
I’m enjoying working on this Baja, especially after watching you for years having a good time with yours. It’s another reason for the Sickxty build, cross of different things that I like and it’ll be multipurpose as well.
Move that oil pan before you kick it , it's freeking me out .

Rear rims are 15x8 and the rear tires on it at that point are 31 x 10.5 x 15. I have since out on smaller tires on the rear.
EZGZ has an issue with CV joints and almost at same time, Duckman has issues with CV joints. Then Duckman has an issue with wiring, and almost at same time VWJawbreaker has a Baja with wiring issues. Wonder what issue you will have that transfers to another YTer. See where this might be going?

Yes sir they sure can. They make tow bars specifically for older VW’s.

@@VWJawbreaker well IMO you want something you earn it? Seems to me Levi was missing from a lot of the work on the Frankenbeetle build.
@@thehammah8444 I completely agree with you. However I gave him a pass with all of the welding and what not that needed to be done. He helped on the chassis when I wasn’t recording and plans to help when things progress more.

Um,, I'm gonna question the sellers statement that it's 100 miles on a rebuilt motor.. That's some nasty oil for only 100 miles.. just saying!
It did sit for almost a year before I got it… hard to say honestly. He might have also been taken for a ride since he didn’t know much about VW’s.
Between the open exhaust and crappy paper chrome aircleaner oil was bound to be nasty. Baha equals offroad aircleaner only with turn down exhaust.
