I was just given a '74 VW that has been sitting since '95. The body is perfect, other than surface rust, and the engine is complete. I'm about to tear into it so this video will get me motivated!
Next door neighbour had a same colour Beetle 1303 was a '72 back in the early 80's here in the UK what's not to love about an old bug 👍hope this car gets a lovely restoration so glad you got it running👍👍👍
These vintage VW’s will always find some way to surprise us. There is a old saying: “If the engine rotates freely, it will run.” 99% of the time, it is true.
Carbs, plugs points and coils. I so miss the old stuff. Putting a long screwdriver on the rocker cover and holding the other end to your ear looking for sticky/worn valves. A man could pull down and rebuild 50's, 60's, 70's motors with 1 arm tied behind his back. Loved being up to my ass in grease and shit. Great video.
Lots of bits hidden in the weeds! I could spend days unearthing rusty gold from the grass in a place like that. The encrusting of lichen along the trim and window-edges is pretty neat! Nice fix, runs good!
My parents had a few VW beetles over the years, very reliable car. It sounds like a VW Beetle & goes like one the very best & very reliable car Germany ever made.👍
My buddy changed out the distributor and a new carb and its running pretty good. Motor is actually going in a different car. Not sure what will become of this body. Its pretty rough. JC.
that was a fuel injected bug originally. Note the data port on the firewall top left, a regular super beetle wouldn't have the data port. I was actually surprised to see the original distributer though.
Yup, I had one like that, metallic green, 1974. They were very reliable if kept well maintained. The points gap needed adjustment every 4000 miles or so, then they would always start, rain or shine. Whoever buys it off you needs to remove the engine though, clean out all the straw in the fan housing. Not good to rev it up too high until all that is done.
Just got a 71 an the old man I got it from was doing some work on it an I guess he left a blue shop rag on the fan housing... is my guess so the generator went out so I swaped a alt in it an in the fan was that blue rag I'm guessing it sucked it in from the top somewhere in to the fan hole in the back
Wow you don't see these old cars too much anymore in New York that is a great find I always wanted a Volkswagen like that. I have a 1998 Chevy Tahoe LT with 232,000 and its in very good shape only cleat coat failure on the hood and the top of my truck . I am thinking about selling it eventually but the four wheel drive stops me from selling it ,great winter truck.
You know in 1974 there was a seatbelt interlock system so if you were in the drivers seat it wouldn’t start unless you wore the belt. My apologies if someone posted this already but I don’t read all the comments. I bet that car was in very good shape when it was parked.
Howdy JC. Good to see You back at the Garage. My Brother bought an old 73 Super Beetle a while back. Nice Job getting that old one Running again after 30 years.
@@Volkswear I'm really leaning towards a Vanagon myself. I see a lot of them around here but none for sale. I sure would like to have a nice one of those.
Sometimes, someone messing around with these VW engines, not understanding they have an electric fuel shutoff, will conclude the engine is just not going to start no matter what. You end up getting a good engine at a good price because they didn't know how to get it started.
Hello Salvage yard worker from some state and farm. I see the licensed plate as a proof of who had operated the Green mean Volkswagen super Bug. It is tamed only if you add more parts that replaced the bad seal of oil. The bug is air cooled sedan 2 doors atop the trailer named 4 wheel Master and its park for a week until you have to pay for new tires because you are in their tire center property. The tire will proof that the inspector will sell you the fee for overall and while you do the overhaul the check-up as we inspect the shop or your bug. Reason we run the brand because we don't buy radiator fluid that has to have brand like Prestone or Peak. We use the brand like Car and ply V-belt to keep the clean bug but we need wireless vacuum cleaner so that the dealer would know that you volunteer and learn to help the dealership and the lot owner to attract more potential buyer. We still run the brand because it's smaller than brand named Prestone. If you go to Discount and make discount to slash the price off because they sell product without add in the retail pricey parts; on were made in American China International parts that would sell gasket set to overhaul your broken engine or is your engine is 1600 cc will run as operator expect to let it last up to 250,000 miles reading in Vollkswagen Bug's odometer. We will take camera picture of your licensed plate in your green Volkswagen super Bug so that the people is ready at same time to sell you the operationable and salvageable transportation called vehicle. You shall not go to the DMV because it needs to be inpect the more parts to help the super Bug green sedan 5 window and no vent wing window. The old no good licensed is inside the car and it must go to estate so the estate will overhaul all licensed plate and melt all licensed plates to be sold as scrap to the trust board and DMV. But we don't melt it - I sent it back to DMV licensed dealer and you will need licensed and add number and letter your the green Volkswagen because without the licensed plate then you are not allow to earn money or value or even spend on trading post area. Period. But you said the trailer have licensed plate but throw the trailer licensed plate away then right away get the car licensed plate to save your money. Sir? In case when you have trailer and the Bug then most likely to drive the trailer that can be power up by borrow someone else's steering wheel but the Insurance force the liability of the law that someone else is licensed to drive only one vehicle and not more - To save money and be the money Miser - the wiser.
Fabuloso!!!!!!!!! Las defensas en excelentes condiciones sin óxido, las calaveras muy bien, no se tostaron por el sol, y la pintura súper, por eso los bochos son muy buenos, Made in Alemania 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I heard someone that are in the channel forum said the super Bug is running with your experience and then the tools will stay and lock up the Volkswagen doors but No key is avail is it since you did hot wired the Volkswagen for a good reason. The worth of your work was it was a broken runner and then it became runner with a proof of recording of its sound loud enough to go to the licensed lawyer inside DMV everyday like mechanic ASE will appear at counter sales and financial manager combo in USA area.
Never understood folks passion for these things. They are hateful, noisy and couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding. Having said that it’s nice to see old motors brought back to life no matter how terrible they are
Hey Sir. What about that Corvair, would you consider doing a first start on that one? Seems like it is in pretty good shape. I do like VW bugs they are a lot of fun to have and drive. Take care, great video.
@@Volkswear I have a La Grand Bug in Viper Green. I'm so undecided about whether I'm going to maintain that original colour or go for something different when she's restored. Fortunately nothing is happening quickly over here.

I filled the bowl through the vent. I guess it got cut out in editing. I use a bottle from a paint store that has a very small nozzle. Works perfect for filling up the carbs. JC.
yes, it was more painful than it used to be because the closed caption that I read your lip as well and interpreting to me in word and typing of we heard. Looks like my old 74 super. Even the same color. The only bad thing about it was that it was a semi-automatic and had the worst pickup. So bad that it was dangerous on the highway 😮
its beautiful to see this, shame i can't save one myself as i live in shitland aka iceland where most are extremely expensive even if unrestored, can't get a chance in this dump even. oh well!
Great year for the bug,
we had two of them in 74.

Even before it fired you could tell that the motor is in excellent shape. When it did start: Confirmed!
God, the engine has got a very healthy sound! And no smoke as someone noticed already!
Lots of bits hidden in the weeds! I could spend days unearthing rusty gold from the grass in a place like that.

I did end up with a beetle roof rack, some wheel adapters and some pretty cool old mag wheels. Lots of stuff there for sure. JC.
Amazed how good that rear chrome bumper is.
It was so good seeing this old car fire up and run ….I hope it gets restored back to the way it was in the 80s….❤
Nice save on the super beetle . Didnt take much to get it to run in which is ideal . Thanks for sharing !!
Not too bad at all. Thanks for watching. JC.

Drove a 1974 Super Bug to college. Great memories.

Had to watch the first start vid for that reason alone. Good job!
I love the VW design! I’m a big guy so I feel claustrophobic in the Beetle. I do like the van’s also the old Schiraco.👍
I had a green 1973 Super Beetle that looked just like that in 1975 and 76. That one sounds good!

Should you run an engine that's been sat that long at such high RPMs when it's only just been started? I thought it's not good for an engine when it's cold even if it's your daily driver??
You should always allow the oil to warm up so it can lubricate the engine better especially if it had lain idle for a long time
