  • From Arkansas to Missouri to Tennessee - from the Ozarks to the Great Smoky mountains. Follow my motorcycle roadtrip through three states - and find out, why my ride through the Great Smoky Mountains was quite different than I expected.
I started my day of riding at Barkshed Camp. The campground is situated along North Sylamore Creek - you can ride a loop and follow small dirt roads all the way to Gunner Pool Recreation Area or Steele Falls. I was heading to the third recreation area on North Sylamore Creek creek though.
Blanchard Springs is most famous for its extensive cave system - but due to covid I was not able to take a tour. The springs are worth a visit anyways though. There is a stone trail that takes visitors deep into the woods to see where the Blanchard Spring spills out of the cave.
On the way I as well visited Mirror Lake . The water is a deep turquoise due to mineral deposits from the nearby springs and caves. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout - and there was quite an amount of people enjoying the beautiful views while fishing.
After enjoying my breakfast at Drifters Cafe in Cave City I started to ride on bigger roads, crossed into the state Missouri and took a bridge over Mississippi river, that is as well the natural border to my next state of the USA, to Tennessee.
Before finally heading to the Great Smoky Mountains I stayed a night at the idyllic Green Frog Farm. Green Frog Farm has the mission to Restore West Tennessee History. Dr. John Freeman collects and restores historic log cabins and buildings - and opened the Green Frog Farm with his family. Today there are more than 20 structures that range from a moonshine shed, old school building and church to a cotton gin built in 1910.
The next day I decided against visiting Nashville, and rode straight to the Great Smoky Mountains.
But unfortunately my ride through the Great Smokey mountains and to Cades Cove Loop turned out quite different than expected because of an unforseen incident. Tune in to find out what happend - and to join the turbulent ride through Arkansas, Missouri & Tennessee.

Because so many asked, here is a short follow up about my tick disease and as well some of the best advices on how to prevent ticks if you are looking for some:
    - The videos were already recorded in May-June, and I didn't take the antibiotics the doctors gave me on the trip. When I came back to europe I started to feel tired and sick, and a german tick expert diagnosed me with lyme and two other co-infections. I am still treated with antibiotics up to today, hopefully there will be some good news soon. An additional problem is, that two of the ticks I had were a species that don't exist in europe - so there are simply no laboratories here that can test on some things they can cause (yes, as some of you commented, they as well can cause red meat allergies and allergies to mammal products).
    - IF YOU GET BITTEN BY A TICK: CONSULT A DOCTOR AND DO WHAT THEY SAY! IF THE DOCTOR SAYS THAT TICK BITES CAUSE NO HARM, LOOK FOR ANOTHER DOCTOR.
    - Jason made a very helpful comment about tick prevention that pretty much wraps up what most of you suggested:
'I've found that treating clothes with permethrin to the most effective way to prevent tick bites. Once it dries it's completely odorless and it lasts for 6 weeks even with washing. Works on tents and camping equipment also. A little Deet at the wrist, neck, waist and ankle entrance points is a great extra bit of insurance too.'

I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m so sorry about the ticks. I hope you are feeling better. I was born in Arkansas and have lived my entire life in the southern United States. The heat and humidity (and the ticks 🤣) can be nearly unbearable at times. The Great Smoky Mountains are absolutely beautiful. I love that area of the country. Thank you for this wonderful video series.

Are you glad that you stayed in the South? I spent 11 years in central Texas and loved it there. I had to leave because of the cedar allergies, though. I came to Arkansas in March of 2020. It's gorgeous here! But I also encountered ticks by avoiding the advice of the locals to stay out of the woods. I want to stay, but am very leary of being bitten again. And I'm allergic to bug repellent. So, I was just wondering if you are glad that you stayed in the South. And if so, how you've survived the ticks. And the snakes that people also warn me about.

I am vaccinated agains fsme, but unfortunately ticks can carry a lot of severe diseases that there is no vaccine against. The American ticks as well have a lot of things that can’t even be examined in European laboratories because the ticks here in Europe don’t cause these reactions. 🤯 I am still on the way of recovery, but found an awesome tick specialist in Germany who is helping!

I've found that treating clothes with permethrin to the most effective way to prevent tick bites. Once iit dries it's completely odorless and it lasts for 6 weeks even with washing. Works on tents and camping equipment also. Besides camping I hike and hunt regularly and I have never had a tick bite with the permethrin treatment. Occasionally I skip it and that's when I usually find ticks. A little Deet at the wrist, neck, waist and ankle entrance points is a great extra bit of insurance too.

I ride , Camp and do a LOT of metal detecting. Sawyers Permethrin is the answer!!!! For the last 10 years I just saturate everything with the spray and let it dry and kill everything in its path!!! The ticks are so thick here in CT that I watch hundreds climbing my pants and fall off at my kneecaps dead. LOL! I had Lyme twice and lost 4 dogs to it. SERIOUS stuff here. Great Post!!!

No problem Lea! Glad to help out and add to the general discussion. Hope you are doing better now and the antibiotic regimen is helping you get better. I know that lone star ticks emanated from the Southwest US (as the name indicates TX) and spreading throughout the Eastern and northern US. The Ehrlichiosis bacterium they can spread is only been a concern for a couple of years now. Lyme disease is definitely some serious stuff. Swollen joints, bell's palsy, irregular heartbeat, extreme fatigue, brainfog can all be symptoms. The deer tick that spreads lyme is tougher to spot also being the size of a flake of pepper. I know the suggestion of light-colored clothing to spot them isn't always possible with ADV gear but something to consider also when bringing changes of clothing for camp. Another symptom of lyme disease and usually the first is the bullseye rash. I know it's not always present. I found one of the nasty little buggers on the back of my shoulder once and first reaction was to yank it out as quickly as possible. Unfortunately i left the head in and the subsequent infection resembled a bullseye rash enough I was prescribed antibiotics. Another couple of tips from that 1. The doctor mentioned that it is easier to test the tick than a person's blood so bring it in if possible and 2. It takes 24 hours of attachment to get lyme so quick and proper removal with tweezers is a safe bet also.
Sorry to ramble on but thought those tips might be helpful as well. My younger brother has undiagnosed or chronic lyme disease. Two separate 30-day antibiotic regimens didn't completely knock it out and he takes around 30 nutritional supplements a day to keep the worst symptoms at bay. Hope that catching it early and good doctors will do the trick. Good news too, is the FDA is likely to approve a vaccine for lyme in the next year. There was one in the late 1990s but it was discontinued.

    • @ttrguy9952
      @ttrguy9952 2 роки тому

      @@Got2Go You are welcome Lea!!
Here in CT, the deer ticks are insane. Every single tick tested here came up positive for carrying Lyme Disease. Think about this. Lyme disease = Lyme CT. The most likely prescription here is Oxycodone, a form of penicillin. You need to avoid the sun as it makes your skin and eyes hyper sensitive to sunburning.
      Peace Lady!

You rode very close to my house. Small world. Easy ways to reduce ticks:
    1. Wear boots - you've got that covered.
    2. Spray the Deep Woods Off onto your boots and the bottoms of your pants.
    3. If possible, tuck your pants into your boots.
    4. Avoid tall grass, bushes, and small trees. Ticks climb onto them and jump or drop onto you.
    5. Wash your camping bedding regularly. Ticks will concentrate there if allowed.
    6. Hang your pants and shirt just outside your tent. Any ticks on them won't follow you into the tent.
    7. Check your boots for ticks when bringing them into the tent.
    Hope you feel better!

I'm so sorry that you got sick!!! And from just 3 tiny creatures. 😟 Unfortunately, this is what much of the southern US is like. Absolutely gorgeous! But surprisingly dangerous. Not only from ticks, but from snakes, too. I moved to Arkansas in March of 2020 and was warned by everyone to stay out of the woods. I didn't listen. After one afternoon in the woods I and my new puppy were both covered in ticks. We both had Loan Star ticks and deer ticks on us plus a 3rd kind I don't remember the name of. I was bitten, too. I don't know if either of us got diseases from them or not. (I was already sick before that and then got COVID, so I couldn't tell.) But I think it is likely. It's too late now to treat either of us successfully if we did get the diseases. I agree with what you said. If anyone gets bitten, do go to the doctor. And take the medicine. Unfortunately, I am allergic to tick repellent. So now I just stay out of the woods. 😔 I hope you feel better soon. Hugs.

Lovely videos. Sorry about the ticks. Permethrin is what you want to use, but only on clothing, boots, etc. This will kill any ticks that get on your cloths. You spray a good amount on cloths, socks, boots, and let it dry. I live in KY and got Lymes Disease in my early 20's (yikes back in1990's) and then in 2018 was on a kayaking trip in Missouri, and got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Both are horrible. The Lymes however was probably worse because I was young and no one really knew much about it, I went several months without proper treatment. There are many tick borne diseases however and some are chronic. I hate these things. It is so difficult when you enjoy the outdoors and have to worry about a small critter making you sick. This is my second video. Glad I found your channel. Your videos are fabulous !!!

Just found your channel. Love it! So sorry you picked up some ticks while enjoying our countryside and have not felt well. I will heed your advice regarding them when traveling. Watched two videos before calling it quit but I suspect I will be watching many more here soon. I love how people from other countries can show us Americans a unique perspective of our beautiful land. I have never heard of a road closing for one day during the week unless it was weather related, how bizarre! I thought I was the only person lucky enough to find such odd things. Thanks for creating such great content. I hope you are feeling better soon and have safe travels soon.

Very sorry about the ticks . Winter i dont really see any but in the spring & summer i use the deep woods off that repels ticks & chiggers & other insects i usually spray my legs before getting ready to run the trails & i never get any ticks or chiggers . Hope you enjoy your adventures & hope you come back to arkansas soon take care & stay safe . ❤️🤗

Don't brush your head or hair against brush- they can drop on you if given a chance! Other suggestions I read below are good ones. But I would take the antibiotics since once a disease process starts, it may be impossible to stop progression (like chronic lyme disease!). Head to toe exam each day is a good idea. I love your VLOG. Thx! and good luck.

Lea, love the video. Ticks are certainly a nuisance! As a new subscriber who stumbled on your videos a week or so ago, I appreciate the hard work I know you put into them. Life is full of little setbacks, it's how you react to them that determine what impact they have on you. Seems like you have the ride attitude. Press on and don't let the problems keep you from your goal. Can't wait until next week's video. Stay safe.

Every now and then, You Tube sends me something special. You are on that very short list. I also travel mostly alone, in southern MO and Northern AR, and I will never see it all, but will have fun trying. Love your videos. As far as tick sickness goes, I think quitting red meat and mammal products couldn't hurt anyway, along with staying hydrated. You will get well, I hope it is soon. All the best.

Thank you so much! Luckily I am not the biggest meat eater anyways - so I immediately cut down on those completely. Hallo Lea - so sorry - es tut mir leid! Such a wonderful area and the fascinating old cabins and mill. So scenic thanks for taking us along! Please be careful the ticks can sometimes carry Lyme disease which is very bad, happened to a friend who recovered but the doctors didn’t diagnose it early. So not sure if you’re back home now, but hope you’re resting and getting the right medical attention. Alles Güte. Til the next video! 💙

I hope your health fully recovers from the tick bites. As a native of Tennessee, I have been fortunate to avoid illness from tick bites but chiggers are the insect I dread the most as they are so tiny you can get hundreds of bites before realizing it...and in some not so nice places. Nashville has become quite congested so although I live there, I would prefer riding to forested and mountain areas as well.

Lea did give us the eye while laundering, but it was meant for the ticks. I am sorry you got sick, I wish you had taken the doxycycline treatment, the photosensitivity could have been dealt with easier than the scary tick diseases. Hope all is well now.
