I agree, I was about to leave myself but then i got an electric scooter and started to explore the city more and wow, its got marinas, beaches, parks along the lake. The winters got warmer and the summers cooled off, its like a paradise for weather here now too, as far as 4 seasons go anyway. Just enough rain and sunshine mixed in. I had an urge to go back to LA but keep asking myself why, Toronto has everything, its just missing one thing, the magic. But thats for the people of the city to make.

I lived in Toronto in 2005, worked on minimum wage, had a place of my own, savings and a used civic. That's right, on minimum wage. I did like working a lot, always did, loved my coworkers so to me work is always just fun so I was always there until close, then i would go out, just ample energy as well and would open the next morning lol
That's no longer the case. So, you gotta ask yourselves, why would you live there?

Interesting perspective about the weather in Toronto vs Saskatchewan. I agree about the nature and food . Toronto also promotes ambition and positivity.
If you work and live close to each other and have accommodation sorted it is pretty good
However , traffic is a right off disaster and there is out of control crime including random TTC and street violence sometimes extreme random violence which I believe is because of growing poverty and mental health.
Is it livable ? It all depends on your personal situation, income and accommodation.
If you are a foreigner from second tier country I would say it’s incredible for opportunity but you’ll have to work 25 to 30 years long hours if you are starting from scratch .
I miss Toronto but I couldn’t do the gta driving or work in the gta . I had to escape to the Georgian Bay region for 10 years to gain my sanity . Now I’m in Europe.
In spit of everything I’d say “ never say never “
When it comes to returning to the big smoke Torono

Yes, Toronto is a great city - I lived there for years when I was just out of university and still enjoy going back there to visit. But the cost/benefit analysis shifts when you get older and start a family. Then housing costs and good neighbourhoods are king, and the Arts scene is less important. My adopted city of Ottawa is much better for families and has a great balance of nature, culture, opportunity and affordability. After living in Ottawa for a decade I looked at jobs in Toronto and Vancouver (which I also love) but there is no way I could afford to live in either of those cities, and sacrifice so many of the benefits of living in Ottawa.

As an ex Canadian I agree with your list of reasons people choose to live in Toronto! Montreal would be in the running except for two reasons: language and the harsh winter. Of course, that’s somewhat compensated for by the underground city and the excellent metro but for many living on an island is an adjustment and the culture shock of living in a predominantly francophone society, means its not as immediately welcoming as Toronto. If Toronto weren’t insanely expensive, it would much bigger than its current size and in that regard, who knows what the future holds. As a Torontonian, I think my favourite cities include New York City and Singapore: New York City, when it comes to its opportunities and attractions and Singapore when it comes to its cleanliness, weather, attractions and public transport. Toronto is probably one of the cities I would rank near the bottom of the barrel, high cost of living, inefficient public transportation system, rising crime, and sometimes depressing weather.

  • @naturalexplorer
    @naturalexplorer Місяць тому

Lived in Toronto for 2 years and visited periodically since. It certainly has the many good points you mention but has historically derived from what I will call a very 'straight laced' conservative past. In 1984 to 1986 the entire city shut down at about 12.30am. Can't go anywhere. Super hard to get home due to very limited bus transport, can't find any cabs anywhere. Forced to walk long distances in snow with freezing windchill effect. Taking 20 minutes to get the key in the door due to the cold numb hands, then putting your hands under hot water for 5-10 minutes to defreeze them. That was super weird and represented for me the conservative character of the city back then. Very stoic lot which is not a bad thing. Lacked vitality for me back then given a full on fun based Sydney upbringing of those days and then ventures over lots of Europe. Queen Street West best on offer as an arty/music/creative/lively area back then. The overall 'straight' edge lifestyle has changed somewhat now but for me cemented a general conservative attitude into the mindset of most living there. Sorry - but this impression has stuck with me. My experiences of Montreal is it is a lot livelier. Flying over Toronto these days it is amazing how large the urban area has extended.

Ha ha. San Jose fits almost all your criteria: vibrant downtown, very diverse neighborhoods, nature, job opportunity, decent transportation, relatively friendly people and culture/art. Best weather in the world: Jan. hi 60 low 43, July hi 84 and low 60. Very little rain. Now, has a lot of cheap and great housing, thanks to the city and state. It cool affordable housing for the artist downtown for only $800 a month.

Makes me want to visit Toronto. On a side note, I lived in Montreal from 1994 to 1996. That was a great time. I was in my party phase, mid 20’s. I think that’s why I loved it; it’s not a place for ambition - that’s what Toronto is for. Montreal is different. That’s where you move if you are a die hard Canadian socialist republican revolutionary

Toronto is definitely on my bucket list of cities to visit someday, I get the impression from your videos and others here on UA-cam that it would be my kind of city for a creative person like myself where I could thrive and make good connections. I also don't own a car and I get around using public transport and walking so when you said Toronto has a good transit system, that gave it another plus in the book for me. Great video and also cool idea with making a Google Maps travel guide for people new to Toronto! :)

Don't know if it was on purpose or not (seems like it was), but, the pronunciation of Toronto in the editing kept me smiling throughout the vid. Shot of Toronto: pronounce it like a native Torontonian. Shot of other cities: pronounce it like someone not originally from there. Nice!

My husband and I live an hour outside of Toronto and actively look for ways to avoid going to there. It's a chaotic and stifling combination of traffic congestion, pollution, people, and concrete, in addition to all of the other unfortunate things plaguing almost every major city in Canada now - including extremely high rates of homelessness, and rampant drug addiction.

I agree that in terms of Canadian cities, Toronto is still the overall best choice. At the same time, I think that’s also why I want to spend a lot more time outside of the country. Toronto itself is far from ideal. The weather sucks (I get it, Saskatchewan is worse but Toronto weather still sucks), the traffic is horrendous, it’s too expensive for the value that it offers and the people are really not that friendly (yes they are polite but not a very strong sense of community, everyone kind of does their own thing or sticks in their own groups). I will agree with you on the food though, the food here is very good

I believe Toronto is the seat of Canadian Cinema, and TV. While The Couver is a favorite spot for American MSM companies. A lot of American produced shows are shot in The Couver like 21 Jump Street TV show with Johnny Depp, and Arrowverse shows with Stephen Amell who is a Torontonian. A lot of American Sci Fi shows are filmed in The Couver.

Transit is yet another example of why voting outside the Conservative/Liberal duo is so important in Canada - Saskatchewan (where I live for now) used to have a bus system serving the VILLAGES. (Thanks, NDP!) Now the provincial capital Regina (my current home) barely has a bus system when once upon a time it had an extensive streetcar network, and most of the villages are in the end stages of dying. It's not how it was, and it's not how it could be!
