It’s indeed scary to see Djokovic’s game is getting even more complete while he is already the most complete player of all time.

Breathtaking performance from Novak Djokovic my friend especially in the returning game my dear God have we ever seen a better serve returner than Novak Djokovic?? Of course not he just is a beast serve returner without any shadow of a doubt the greatest serve returner of all time.
He gives Medvedev his own medicine what Medvedev does to everyone else he simply grinds Medvedev down from the baseline. Medvedev hung on in the first set where he was willing to suffer in the first set. But in the second and third set, Medvedev was no longer in the mood to suffer, and tried to finish the points earlier (which of course is easier said than done against a monstrous wall like Novak Djokovic) and of course did not do that so successfully either.
And made a lot of unforced errors both from the backhand side and especially the forhand side, only with his weak forhand side, Medvedev makes 14 unforced errors. And when you face a wall like Djokovic who refuses to miss, you will of course not get away with 30 unforced errors that Medvedev makes in total in the final and only 24 winners.
My dear friend, Djokovic outgrinds Medvedev in this match and shows who is the number 1 grind monster in tennis.
Like always lovely video my friend, and as always I really enjoyed immensely to hear your tennis thoughts and analyzes. That’s why you are by far the best tennis youtuber in the world keep up this amazing work.

Let's face it, Djokovic is still a baseline grinder, he still plays long ralles. He's not likely to push himself more in best of three matches but at slams he can still give himself a push in the long rallies when needed. It's why he lost twice to RBA (another tough defender/grinder with flat groundstrokes similar to Medvedev) at Miami and Doha in 2019 but beat him fairly easily in 4 sets at Wimbledon in 2019. He fights for the big matches.

What a tactical and technical masterclass Djokovic held yesterday. From serving to returning, from pacing to precision play, from guile to aggression, from fitness to focus, from ball-redirection to feasting on his opponent's weaknesses, from offense to defense, from dominance at the net to baseline brawling, Novak Djokovic, the complete player, towered over Medvedev, whom the Serb simply swatted to the side en route to his 18th grand slam title. And what an easy 18th it was.

I see you many are saying Nole won because Danii played very bad & choked, I agree.. but maybe they don't know there's a thing in tennis called 'not allowing the opponent to settle'.
If Danii allowed Tisti to settle in 3rd set, we could have see a 4-5 setter or even Tisti in final. But Danii pushed back the resistance.
Likewise, Danii was playing solid until break in 2nd set, after that ball is in Nole's court. Danii tried hard to push in 3rd set while 2-0 and 3-1, but was given a good tennis lesson. That's what matters, its called experience.
still 💛 for Danii, what a great player.
for Nole❤️, you are our champ & your fighting spirit, shows how a man can deny all odds and still stand still. G O A T.

Every record Federer and Nadal achieve is SENSATIONAL, UNBELIEVABLE etc. But as soon as Djokovic matches it or does better suddenly it's not important or not worth mentioning anymore 🙄. Don't be surprised if on March 8, nobody bothers to mention Djokovic breaking Federer's weeks at no. 1 record. In fact expect them to be silent.

And in the final Djokovic was down as the winner. What happened Nadal kicked his ass. Now here in the Aussie Open, Djokovic isn’t doing it again and he is not going to make it to the final. Next thing we know he is an underdog in the final against Medvedev. He was an underdog and destroyed the poor guy on a 20 match winning streak.
Djokovic on Rod Laver Arena and Nadal on Phillip Chartres court are just unbeatable and it is going to take someone who is playing Literally God Mode for someone to beat either man at there surface.
And I honestly don’t think it is happening soon unless one are injured. It’s not happening.
Now let’s go into the French with everyone saying Stan Wawrinka will destroy Nadal 😂😂

Novak will go down as the GOAT, but he will be passing Sampras not Federer or Nadal. I watched Sampras play against much tougher competition than what Roger faced before Novak became the player he has become about 10 years ago. Both in their prime , Rafa never beats Sampras at the Australian open, Us Open and certainly not Wimbledon. Federer can't be considered the best when he has a losing record against both his rivals and his winning ratio of big tournaments is one in 4.4 while Rafa's is one in 3,4 and Novak's is one in 3.3. That is a huge difference.

Yes Nadal and Djokovic both have a winning H2H against him, and Djokovic especially has owned him at slams for a long time, but he has the edge against Nadal on grass and it's a tossup between them on hardcourt (with Federer likely having a better chance against Djokovic on the surface than Nadal). @Avinash Anand I agree, they probably will. But by that logic, you could also separate the #1 (whoever you consider the GOAT) from the other two. There's a giant distinction between these players and the rest of field, and that's why they call them the Big 3. To me, there isn't enough of a distinction -- even now in their careers -- to justify separating Djokovic and Nadal into their own category. That's all I'm saying.

    @marekwichniarek268 3 роки тому +3

Gill, I think you were exeggerating about Daniil's strenthgs in the previev of this final. 2 things:
    1. Serve/return dynamic. You told Rublev and Tsitsipas are better than Novak in that department and you couldn't see how Novak can win many serve-plus-1 points against Daniil - if they couldn't. And Novak simply did that yesterday. I watched only 1st set of Medvedev-Rublev match but I think that's enough, it was the closest of 3 sets they've played. Don't know the stats but I rarely seen Rublev 1st serves over 180 km/h, many times around 175 km/h. Only few times around 200 km/h. How's that superior to Novak's 1st serve at the moment, usually around 195-200 km/h? And it's not only speed of serve when Novak is superior, also technique, placement etc. About Tsitsipas. I've watched the whole semifinal, also heard Darren Cahill watched that match from the court level and seen how bad Tsitsipas' movement was, especially in first 2 sets. How he was late to almost every ball on both sides (bh and fh). I'm not an expert at all, just a tennis fan, but I could easily see how terrible Stefanos' backhand was in the first 2 sets in his both last matches at this tournament: against Rafa and against Daniil. Terrible to watch even at this level. Coming back to Rublev: he had weaker serve than Novak, I also don't think he played a great quality of 1st strike (and offense, in general) compared to what Novak played in the final yesterday. Even if Rublev's forehend generates more power. It didn't have the same quality: in terms of direction and depth. So - in general - I really don't think Daniil played better serve-plus-1 players than Novak in 2 previous rounds.
About Novak's return. How many times we've seen him dismantling much bigger servers than Daniil? Raonic, Isner, Anderson, etc? Nothing new here, nothing to add. I know Novak had problems with reading Daniil's 1st serve quite few times, but, really, he dealed with bigger servers very well many times, also in this tournament. In the 3rd set Daniil finally tried to hit two 1st serves, the tactic that was successful in 2019 Cincinatti semis against Novak, completely turned that match around, but probably can't be successful in every match, especially in best-of-5 matches against the Big 3 players. Great example is Djokovic-Anderson match at 2015 Wimbledon 4th round when Anderson hit over 30 aces in first 2 sets, often after 2nd serve bombs and got 2:0 lead but couldn't keep this level of serving for 3 straight sets against great returner, got tired and less accurrate, finally lost in 5 (well, it wasn't that easy and simple, 5th set was played the next day).
About Novak's serve. Only 3 aces (compared to 23 in 4 sets against Zverev) but probably Daniil is better returner than Sascha and stayed further behind the baseline so he could reach many of these 1st serves but still they were winning serves (or easy +1 plays for Novak)
    2. "He's not gonna serve his way to shorten points, he's not gonna hit his way to it, he's not gonna net rush to it, he's not gonna drop his way into short points" - your words from the preview, and Novak proved it all wrong, especially with his serve and his hitting. That's why I think you exaggerated about Daniil's strenghts, described him as unbreakeable wall. Close to his 100% Djokovic had enough power to dismantled this puzzle, also with his return and defence - also in-form Thiem at the last year's USO with his power, speed and defence. I'd agree that Daniil is stronger mentally and more "fearless" than Sasha, Stefanos, Shapo, better defensive player - but he's not an unbreakable wall. And he's a weaker offensive player than Sasha e. g., from both wings. I think if Sasha was stronger mentally and more clutch player he has the best chance to beat in-form Novak at slams, of the 4 I mentioned here. He has almost the same defence and court coverage as Daniil. He's the same regular from the baseline in long rallies. Has better offence, more power. Thiem is another, different story.

Nice analysis as usual Gill. You are truly great at your craft. I admit I had doubts in Djokovic, only because of his age and that injury he was dealing with. I picked the Octopuss to win this match based on youth and form. I am glad that Nole proved me wrong with the masterclass he displayed last night. Djokovic may reign on hard courts for now, but Medvedevs time will certainly come. Congrats to both Djokovic and Medvedev. Both are great human beings and I hope for much continued success for both of them. Haters can throw out all the meaningless stats they want, but the fact remains that Djokovic leads Nadal in every important stat but slams--more weeks at number one, more year end number 1's, more master 1,000's, 5 WTF's to Nadals 0, winner of every master 1,000 tournament and head to head. In fact, if not for that ridiculous USO debacle last year and Wimbledon being cancelled, Nole would likely be tied with Nadal and Fed at 20 slams. Don't deny that Nadal lucked out getting his precious French Open during the Corona virus. Nadal worshipers like to overrate the Olympics, when in reality, they award less points than a master 1,000 tournament. Compare the number of top 10 players that Nadal beat to win the 08 OG compared to Medvedev at the World Tour Finals last year. The stats are pretty telling. Many good players don't even play the Olympics and the draws are generally much easier than a WTF and even a master 1,000. Not winning a WTF looks much worse on a players resume than not winning an Olympic Gold, primarily because a player gets every year to win a WTF. The Olympics is only every 4 years and a player may just get the bad luck of the draw--be it injury, bad patch in form, security reasons, etc. The OG is important to players for sentimental reasons, but the WTF is much more difficult to win because you have to have a great year to even qualify. Then you have to deal with the best of the best. No easy draws. Remember when an unknown named Monica Puig won the Olympics? What did she do after that? How can Nadal be a better player than Djokovic and Federer, when he cannot beat the elite 8 even once? He sucks indoors as well, with only 2 titles. This shows his deficiencies indoors. You say that Djokovic has never beat Nadal in a FO final, but you fail to mention that the Serb blitzed him in the FO 15 quarterfinals. In addition Nadal was pretty mediocre at Wimbledon from 2012 through 2017. He lost in the 2nd round, 1st round, 4th round, 2nd round, 4th round during his prime. This is inexcusable and would never happen to Djokovic and Federer, even at the French. Djokovic lost to an all-time great in Murray and Wawrinka because of a huge matchup disadvantage in grand slam finals. Your point? That is much better than losing in early rounds to no name players like Nadal did at Wimbledon. Murray also beat Nadal in 2 slam matches(USO 08 and AO 10) when Nadal was in his prime. And that's not even mentioning Nadal falling to lesser players in slams outside of clay from 05 through AO 08. Lastly, Nadal beat up on Federer in the early years because of the huge matchup advantage the Spaniard had, not because he was ever the better player. To conclude, Nadal is no doubt a legend and one of the best. He will just never be better and more complete than both Djokovic and Federer.

"Crowd factor" - another metric that should be taken into account in the GOAT debate. Home advantage is a generally accepted concept in any sport rivalry. It should also be considered in the GOAT rivalry. Diminishing the role of the crowd (independent how Novak deal with it) is another attempt to downgrade Novak's achivements. Fedal has always had home advantage when playing vs Novak (particulalry in AO US open and Wimbledon). Hence, what Novak achieved always playing "away" is yet another reason to call him GOAT.

I feel like right now, the only hope that fedal fans have now is the possibility that djokovic's better serving and better aggression were mostly a result of the faster surfaces. But as a huge Federer fan myself, I really feel the noose tightening around my neck. It's going to take a 2017-esque return from Federer to even get a breath of air in my lungs.

    Hello Gil !
Seeing an altered version of Medvedev in the second and the third set surprised me a lot, you tell us that it is because he doesn't have a solid enough set of lungs and legs, but when we saw him earlier in a five setter against Nadal, in a major final, his physical condition didn't seem to bother him that much. What is your opinion on the matter?
I love the content you provide ! Thumbs up

Have another look at the 5th set. Med needed the trainer for a thigh strain. He dropped serve immediately after. Final set was littered with fatigue-induced unforced errors.

Nadal is just different at Roland Garros. Djokovic is the best, but that 2020 Roland Garros was like on another level.
