  • Hi! Welcome to 5 minutes Cantonese.
    I am Amanda from Hong Kong. I enjoy language learning. I speak cantonese, english, mandarin, Italian and German.
    I guess whenever you tell the Cantonese speakers that you want to learn Cantonese. They will appreciate a lot, but the next minute they will tell you it's very difficult, almost like a mission impossible. So at the end you try to memorize few expressions by heart or simply give up.
    I am not a professional teacher, but I am a professional student. I love to share how I learn language and try to use my own stupid way to teach you. I hope I can help you to make some simple sentences. Don't just try to surprise your cantonese friend with Cantonese foul language(I know it's the easiest way). But you know what I mean... 😂
    I have another channel to teach Cantonese in italian. I put English subtitles there. Hope you enjoy.
    As I mentioned, I am not a professional teacher. Please leave me comments if you have any.
    Sorry, I have made a typing mistake of "to buy", 買 ,it should be "maai5" instead of "Maan"
    Thank you!

    I am Amanda from Hong Kong. I make easy and practical cantonese learning videos for complete beginners to intermediate level.
    My full time job is a flight attendant. I enjoy studying foreign languages. My job allows me to visit many places and meet many people. So that I have more chances to practice what I have learned.
    Due to the covid, I haven't fly regularly for over a year. I find UA-cam is extremely helpful for maintaining my language proficiency. One day, out of curiosity, I looked for cantonese learning channels. I was so surprised that there are so little and most of the good one are even from overseas. That's why I started "5 minute cantonese" on 2020.

      @5minutecantonese  Рік тому

      Hi David, you are right. "nei5" is the official pronouncation. However, most of the cantonese say it with "l" without noticing that. It's very common with most of the word which starts with "n". Or sometimes it's the other way round. The word which starts with "l", we pronounce it with "n". I also have this problem. This was my 1st video 2 years ago. In all my recent videos, I am trying my best to pronunce it with "n".

    I find your method of teaching Cantonese well suited to my learning style. However, I am torn as to how I should approach learning Cantonese. Should I watch all the videos first then re-watch each video to learn how to write the characters at a slower pace, or should I learn how to write the characters as I watch each video?
    I appreciate your thoughts on how I should approach learning Cantonese again.
    (I actually learned Cantonese using "Let's Talk Cantonese" by Victoria Liu/Joseph Durra from cover to cover over 15 years ago. I can still speak some Cantonese but have forgotten how to write the Cantonese characters.)

    • @5minutecantonese
      @5minutecantonese  3 роки тому +2

      Depends on your need. I would suggest you to learn to speak first, like what we do when we were a kid. in the process, you can learn the Chinese character together (I mean by recognize the sharp and how it looks)
      Always follow your interest, e.g You can learn the character of the food in the menu first

I’ve always wanted to learn a Chinese language. I tried Mandarin for a while before realising that it’s not really as common in America, at least where I live. Cantonese is really where it’s at, especially in Chinatowns. Plus there’s a lot of similarities with Japanese in vocabulary tbh. けっこうね tho! I liked this a lot. It was easy to understand. But why did you pronounce “you” with an L sound? Is there a rule for this? For example, a way to know when to you the “n” sound and when to use the “L” sound.

    • @5minutecantonese

      Hello, this is my very early video. The official pronouncation is with 'n', however, it's also true that many Cantonese would pronounce it as 'L'. I did the same without noticing it earlier as we learn chinese character and the pronunciation with our ears😅. We didn't use romanization.
      In all my recent videos, I have changed my way of speaking. I am glad that I learn a lot along the teaching process.

      @@5minutecantonese I don’t think they similar actually. a lot of the character that use in Cantonese does not exist in mandarin ( I speak it btw ) however most grammar in both language put direct such as object and verb in different place in both language and usage of grammar are very different as well. I have to learn the pronunciation is the hardest part because Cantonese mostly swap it’s pronunciation the opposite way like HAI in mandarin became HOI in Cantonese or OU in mandarin became AU in canto. It became a pattern to follow which is why they are not similar and confusing

      In all my recent videos, I pronunce it as nei5 as the official pronouncation is with "n". Honestly I didn't even realize that in the beginning since hf of us or even more than half of the local pronunce that as lei5. Because for Cantonese, the difference for n and l is very subtle. Just like the tones to foreigners. Sometimes it's hard for you to tell the difference but to us it's a huge different.
      I am sorry that I didn't pay too much attention to that in the beginning. Now I am trying my best to pronounce it correctly.
