Philadelphia Derringer pistol - replica vs original murder weapon

- Ever since it was invented by Henry Deringer in 1825 the small cap lock singel-shot pistol has been popular among certain people who wanted to carry a concealed fire arm. From approximately 15000 produced Deringer pistols one was involved in a murder of great historical significance. It is the gun which has caused the death of US President Abraham Lincoln who was assassinated on April 14, 1865. This gun as well as the bullet fired from it are on display in two different museums to this day.
There are several types of replica pistols of this model which were produced by European gunsmiths in Italy or Spain starting in the 1960s. This video features one of those replica Deringers made by C.O.M. in Italy.
Do you just seat a patched ball in the barrel over a load of plastic pellets? What did I miss?
Yes I did this in my other video. I wanted to demonstrate how loading works. You missed the part where I described that I can not load the gun for real outside of a shooting range.
@@Flederratte Did you end up pulling that load or did you leave it that way? And what do you think of the quality and function of this firearm? I am thinking about adding one to my collection, however now they are upwards of $650 and thats a lot of money for such a small gun.

$650 is way too expensive for such a gun. Look at garage sales or auctions. Here in Germany they sell for about 70€ to 200€ depending on condition and manufacturer. I would not recommend the cheap replica from "Dikar", "Jukar" etc. of Spain.They have a very weak main spring. Rather look for Italian replica like "Davide Pedersoli".
The Philadelphia Derringer is a fun paperweight and nice to play with for a short while but it is nothing special and the mechanics are very simple. Shooting will not give you great results in accuracy or power but it can be fun for a few shots because how tiny the thing is. The energy is more like shooting a slingshot but with a loud bang.
If you get one for cheap take it. Otherwise I would not recommend to buy one.

Black powder residue has to be washed off with some warm water on the same day of shooting. After that is very important to dry the wet steel parts quickly on the inside and outside. You can find several tutorials on UA-cam. Search for "black powder gun clean"

@@Flederratte I recently bought a similar cap and ball derringer and wasn’t sure how most people cleaned it. I heard some people simply remove the barrel and clean it by submerging it in hot soapy water while scrubbing it with a brush and putting lubricating oil on after drying it. However, I also heard some say to never clean a gun with water. What’s your method of cleaning this particular gun? How far do u dissemble the derringer to clean it and what other cleaning components besides water do u use?

@@erictong862 I did not fire it since. I need a shooting range and licenced person to fire it in my country.
I personally enjoy taking apart the mechanical components so I would disassemble the gun, soak the barrel in warm water with some dishwashing soap and scrub the inside of the barrel with a brush usually used for cleaning laboratory test tubes.
I would also remove the nipple.
Then I would dry it with compressed air and apply a thin coat of Brunox Lub&Cor Oil.
I would suggest to use water to clean black powder guns because the powder residue is corrosive and easily soluble in warm water. It is very important to clean all the residue and dry the metal quickly to prevent rust from forming on the wet steel surface.
Because I enjoy it I would also remove the lock and check if it got dirty. I do not think this is necessary however. I think except from the barrel the rest of the gun could be sufficiently cleaned with a damp towel without disassembly.
I had a philadelphia Deranger it had a Octagon barrel it was also a black powder 45 The factory nipple that came with it. Was too small.
I remember putting a load of powder in it. And a 45 caliber round ball. I took a spark plug and drove it in with a hammer. When I fired it that thing jumped up kicked like a Mule and totally missed the target about jump out of my hand.
Does it have a breech plug at the end?
sure it dose. You can see the difference in colour between barrel and breach in the video. The breach plug is threaded inside the rear of the barrel.

I once read a little more about the company after searching for ages on the internet. There is very little to find about the manufacturers and proof houses.

Lead is so soft it is easy to put a screw into the metal by hand. Similar to pulling a cork from a wine bottle.
