Intelligence from 2000/1 indicated that agencies were aware of Bin Laden’s intentions to strike the U.S., a heightened potential threat, including a single line about wanting to fly commercial airliners into buildings (from a daily intelligence brief to the President). Regardless, the force of the blast would have had to have been more substantial to actually create a collapse, and even then only one tower might have fallen since the core and majority of the other tower would still be intact. It was still a considerable blast, destroying 4-ish subterranean levels in the parking area beneath the buildings/plaza, including a level where ventilation/other utility systems were which allowed the smoke up into the buildings (its easier to check out a diagram of the blast aftermath cross-section). It’s certainly valid to suggest Bin Laden et al were more determined to strike again albeit in a different way after the 1993 “failed” to achieve its purpose, however, deviating from the “traditional” car bomb method for large-scale mass casualty terrorism (think the IRA and the Oklahoma City bombing) created catastrophic and horrifying results, so perhaps there was a lesson learned by the perpetrators from 1993 to improve on their evil idea, you could definitely argue that.

On any regular day the towers had more than 100.000 people inside the complex, tourists included. Both towers would be gone in less than 10 minutes and nobody would have any idea of what just happened. Keep in mind that the first news crews started reporting 9/11 10 minutes after the first plane hit. By the time the news started covering it there would already be a huge smoking gap on Lower Manhattan of unknown origin and both towers missing, along with several other buildings. 100.000 plus several other casualties. The actual death toll could be close to the 200.000 mark. So it would be safe to say that it would've been the worst terrorist attack to date.
The van was actually parked under the North Tower. The Terrorists intended on collapsing the North Tower into the South Tower, bringing them both down which would have killed over 10,000 people if it had actually worked.
Basically big towers like those are meant to whistand strong winds and earth quakes so that’s why the bottom of them are so strong. In 2001 they were smarter and made the tops fall down to destroy the bottom.
If their plan actually worked it would have been so much worse than 9/11.

No they got word at 8:48 (2 minutes after flight 11 hit) on CNN that a plane crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center
