  • This video shows how to that the Penn Slammer 5600L apart and service. It has a detailed explanation of how the bait feeder trip mechanism is assembled. It is a nightmare to figure out if the springs have shot out during disassembly and you are trying to reassemble it.
    I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe.

    Hi Dennis,
    Watched this video and it gave me the courage to take apart my Penn 4600l. My reel did not automatically go from live liner to drag mode. The problem - no mechanism to disengage live lining. Almost left it as is and manually changed modes. But the engineer in me would not let it be. Bought the parts and took apart "the beast." It was tricky but putting the piece "trip arm" (for tauto-ripping the eccentric) first and then getting the eccentric spring (very frustrating) in position with the eccentric in the hole of the housing cover, made the eccentric-eccentric spring- and trip arm-housing cover assembly "stable." With that in a stable setting, I attached the trip arm spring to the eccentric. I have not found a good video on youtube for this and am not ready to take mine apart to make one. I ended up with the sequence described by trial and error, mostly error. Anyway, I thought I would share. I do not plan fro to it again. That part makes this reel, and the 460l, 560l and 5600l, A rea.l reel challenge to service because if the stable assembly of cover to trip arm comes apart during service, one will need enormous patience and perseverance.
    Thanks for all your videos. I am a self-proclaimed, but now fairly experienced, personal reel servicer. As you said somewhere in one of your videos, if you find a reel you like stick with it. BUT as you also said, one will end up with several more than one of the given reel. My corollary is if you change your favorite reel multiple times, as I have, you end up with a lot of reels!
    Thanks again.
    Tom

    This one also gives Dennis a job! The drag is down and has parts that spoil easy! The worst is when the plastic that holds the brake discs gets dry!

    Thanks for posting this one! Just picked up a "bag lot" of gear that included one of these reels. I remembered you had a video of this one that you really didn't like, and now I know why! The one I picked up seems to be working as it should, but needs some cleaning. See what I get into tomorrow when I take it apart. I'm planning on using a large clear garbage bag... I see what you mean about the LiveLiner drag having little to no effect. On this one I picked up, fully loose rear drag to fully on, there is very little difference in the drag amount applied. With maximum drag applied through the liveliner, there is only 1 or 2 pounds of drag. I wonder what it is supposed to be? Now I've taken it all apart, cleaned it up and put it all back together. The liveliner drag is only slightly stronger, so now maybe 2-3 pounds. The way I see it, it isn't supposed to be much drag anyway, just enough to hold the bait in place against some current. It might be enough now to do that but only just barely.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому

      Thanks - I am not sure on the max drag for the rear. It is not supposed to lock down the reel, like the top drag. It is just varying degrees of tension to control the line out - Dennis

    Once again the benefits of your experience will make other lives easier. I will continue a much happier life without ever owning or working on a bait feeder. Now, I wonder if Tackle Advisors has ever torn down and reassembled a bait feeder.

      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому

      Thanks Chris. The bait feeders have their place and when they are working, they provide an advantage to live lining and chunk drift fishing. The two drag system does add a level of complexity and when they break, they are indeed a nightmare to fix - best wishes - Dennis

    Thanks to your vid I was able to install this trip Lever and tiny spring to a 5600L which must of been an earlier version cause it didn’t have one installed. Just a manual flip. I've found that the threads in the plastic knob tend to fill up with corrosion and make adjustment of the bait runner drag difficult or limit the range of adjustment. In the video you didn't clean that out and it may have been the problem. Whe you take the rear drag apart, screw the metal insert out of the knob and clean it well. It may take some penetrating oil and some back and forth to work it out. Then put a coat of grease on the threads before reassembling to keep it from happening again.

    If anyone is wondering what the difference is between marine grease and mechanical grease is that there is no lead in marine grease. Salt reacts with lead.

      Some are easier than others, but they can get complicated. I don't like the Penn designs. Shimano and Okuma are better, but they are not simple. These are Frankinreels where you have two drag systems and an override to let one or the other work. Great idea, but poor execution by many of the manufacturers. The more features, the more things to break, and break they do!
      Thanks

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 місяців тому

      The reels I have see in lockdown mode usually involved a broken part due to over tightening the rear drag. You are correct, they are not full lock down. Why would they be if the purpose is to let line out? Thanks - Dennis

    Dennis, is the Liveliner feature (bait feeder mode) supposed to disengage when you crank the reel handle? I have a 4600L where the liveliner feature works; however, it will not disengage when I crank the handle. I have to manually reset it. As you know, I have a Shimano Baitrunner that is about 30 years old and works like a charm. Your answer is greatly appreciated.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      Yes - the The Penn Reel should perform the same as your Shimano. Flip the switch to go into LL mode and crank the handle to reset the to top drag operation - Something is amiss inside if you have to reset this one manually. Possibly a broken spring - Dennis

No parts were stocked and there is no contact information for the Pinnacle company. You were told to take it back to the retailer that sold it to you for an exchange if it was broken during the warranty period.

      Depends what you are fishing for and how you fish. If you are live lining or drifting chunks, then the bait feeder may be better. I prefer the standard. Less moving parts is a better formula for less things to break. - Dennis

    As fate would have it I have to work on a Spinfisher V 4500LL for a friend. It needs a new main gear because of stripped threads. I cannot get the halves of the live liner switch apart so that I can pull off the side plate. There is a tiny screw that is seized tight. Got any suggestions?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому

      That is going to be problematic Chris. Is it the top screw or the bottom one on the trip lever?
      I would soak both with a penetrating oil like WD40 or Liquid wrench and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before attempting again. You have a better chance with the top screw than the bottom one because the top goes into plastic, but the bottom one goes into the metal lever inside the reel.
      If all else fails, you can clip or break the top off and then replace the affected parts after yogurt the case apart. The replacement parts are available at mystic-arts.com. Good Luck! I hope this helps - Dennis

    • @ChrisSchwamb
      @ChrisSchwamb 4 роки тому

      It's the tiny top screw, not one that goes into the frame.. And, I have soaked it with Nuts Off for a day or so. I think I will try heating the screw head with a hot soldering iron along with a prayer. Overall, I have to say in general that the newer Chinese-made Penns have a lot of basic design flaws starting with fine threaded screws versus the older designs. I will follow up with a report on how things go.

    • @ChrisSchwamb
      @ChrisSchwamb 4 роки тому

      Success with screw removal! Question: Should the live liner switch be up or down when the side plate comes off? I'm trying to minimize the risk of having a spring flying (inside a plastic bag.) I'd prefer to not have to figure out how to reset a friggin' mystery spring.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому +1

      The best way is to keep the trip lever arm on the one side with the screw in securing that part of the assembly. The lever should be in the off position when you go to remove the case. - Dennis
