Sometimes the winning play is right in front of you.
LYRICS:
They made up their mind
And they start attacking
And scooping seemed to be the only way
An exit to some game 3 sideboard planning
Why was he conceding without ever seeing the play?
He’s down to one life
Might have no one blocking
And can’t win cuz he has this anyway
“Just one card in your deck left!” he was mocking
Why was he conceding without ever seeing the play?
Anyone could see the Rogue must be blocked
Or this game he’ll fold
He’s got Veil of Summer and a Doom Foretold
A Lynx that is hungry
A Merchant that’s old and Gray
You can see Death’s Shadow’s wandering off somewhere
Sword of Hearth and Home and another tapped rare
He plotted the board state
He wanted to see
The play
The play
Anyone could see the Rogue that’s unblocked
Should be Creeped with Mold
Cast Veil of Summer by sac-ing that Gold
Save the Lynx that is Hungry
The Merchant that’s old and Gray
You see that Death’s Shadow wandering off somewhere?
Equip Hearth and Home and then exile that rare
When state-based effects check, you’ll win-if you see
The play
The play
Good game…

The land colors never matching (or even adding up to) the permanents in play is such a great, if painful, running gag
I legit couldn't stop laughing about that part. It was awesome.
All dating back to the billion trees in MTG Rap.
It's the best. Remy is the best.
Lots of land destruction
I mean I had a game of commander where I had out megatron, filaji dragon engine, cruelty of gix, and city on fire, all with only 4 lands. Land count doesn’t necessarily mean the lands can’t be used correctly
The genius of making intentional rules mistakes to have hundreds of very precise and skilled players comment and explain in detail why it doesn't work. Brilliant!
im betting no one here is skilled though. just a room full of lawyers
That shit is like crack to magic players. They just can't help themselves.
Some content creators intentionally put typos into their titles in order to get higher engagement. This is like the MtG version of that.
@@lightworker2956 I think it's more artistic genius dedicated to the love of the game than prosaic vanity metric boosting
Way to game the algorithm Remy! Kudos!
Clearly Remy knows how to play MTG so I can only assume he intentionally sets up ridiculous board states and misplays in his videos for the engagement. Half his engagement comes from people who enjoy his parody, the other half from angry magic players pointing out rules violations and how his lands never match the spells he's casting.
They don't realize the level of trolling he's doing, nor that they are part of the algorithm that keeps his engagement high. They are pawns in his master plan, like Elite Vanguard.
I would guess he cares more about the words fitting with the song than the cards fitting the rules. After all, rules are meant to be broken...
I mean, there's also those like me, that would be annoyed by the rules violations, but find it funny because the parody is good
given that the lands almost never match the color of what is on board, I would say he's just being cheeky
No way he could've come up with that sequence of plays that all almost work if he didn't know MTG rules.
Ah yes, hoping your opponent doesn't realize creeping mold is a sorcery, the best line to win XD
Or that SBAs aren't checked until players get priority at which point sword has already returned Percy. Or that you'd draw off veil and deck on your draw step.
And the fact that veil of summer draws a card with 1 card left in library, and he would lose on his next draw step if he made that play.
@UC1q1NjjRdqhz1NS-5WZN6cQ Opponent cast curtain's call, which is a black spell.
@@masterandcomandr3441 AND, state based actions are not checked during abilities resolving, so even if all of the above wasn't the case, the abyssal persecutor would still stop him winning.
@@masterandcomandr3441 I mean he still has abyssal persecutor so no he won't lose on the draw.
I hope the entire idea for this one was built entirely around the Merchant being "old and gray" as the original seed.
I feel like the lynx that was hungry might have played a part too.
I like to think Remy likes musical lyricism more than playing the game as accurately as possible. Like, no he wouldn't have won, but it sure is a bop.
This is true. He had inaccuracies in other videos, but they always turn out as solid bops anyway!
What’s a bop? Birds of Paradise?
@@goat666db I think for one of his songs. In this case, "bop" just means a catchy song!
He would have won either way, since he's always playing against himself 🤓
I mean, I think it's an intentional joke
I didn’t like this much at first but I’ve watched it a few times and absolutely love it. The song, the timing, the jokes, the absurd rules violations, the drama, it’s just fantastic. Best of all, it really captures that feeling you get when you see “the play” and pull a win out of nowhere. And as we all know, those are the best magic moments of all.
I had a moment like this song last night actually. It felt awesome to see the winning okay and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat
Yes
I wouldn't believe that "state based effect" would ever be used in a song until I subscribed to Remy's channel.
Is it weird that referencing Fastball's "The Way" somehow feels like a deep cut, even though it was incredibly popular and is only... EXCUSE ME IT'S 24 YEARS OLD NOW?!?!
This was my exact thought process lol
How dare you remind me how old I am.
this is the first time I've ever heard of this song
The mid to late 90s was a weird time
@@memyself3510 no the 80's and early 90's were a bit weird but the mid to late 90's was the most normal time in all of human history.
I don't know what's worse, the box of dragon shields when none of the cards are sleeved, or this monstrosity of a deckbox next to it.
reflex is a b
Remy knows how to engage Magic players. I love the concept that the only play is bluffing your opponent
I'm not sure if enough folks have noticed that Remy often does this in his videos and flips the circumstances for the players later in the songs, but yes, the fact both players seemingly convince the other with bluffs is wildly entertaining to me as well. It hits a very specific bone from back when I used to play professionally during the 2000s cuz sometimes, that's all you could do to win a match and then you hope the confused opponent believes you and scoops.
Remy should really just have a Leyline of Anticipation on the field in every video.
But that ruins the "casting sorcery speed spells at instant speed" gag.
Nah just a random video where he pans over to show he actually has rules lawyer in play in every video.
Damn, the last verse hits so hard, the opponent didn't notice you cheated like 5 times XD
Hey that was the way!
Maybe Remy had an unseen Vedalken Orrery for the Creeping Mold, a tapped Containment Priest for the sword trigger, and Symbiotic Deployment to not deck out
well the opponent could not have cast curtains call. So I think they were both cheating.
@@Luq12 I saw that Veil of Summer will draw Remi that last card on his opponent's turn, and was thinking "how is he going to get around this?"
I just saw the Veil of Summer mistake. Did not realize how much a broke the rules in the end XD
I also always play sorceries as an instant if the opponent doesn't complain.
That’s just how pre releases work tbh.
Attack with my Goblin. Block? Ok Goblin Grenade in response.
Man, the thing I miss most about CCG magazines is the card game puzzles they had. I honestly find puzzles more interesting than full games.
No idea why, but I was expecting Remy to use the Veil to draw his last card, have it be Wrong Turn and use it on the Abyssal Persecutor.
This is the best answer. Much more fun than a fling effect.
Another gift to the community by the gift for the community. Long live Rémy
Here. Here. And Huzzah. Remy is the King of my MTG parodying heart
Even with all the rules violations, this parody version makes way more sense than the original.
wow, you hardly ever go full 3 minute song parody. This is the channel i never asked for, and i never knew how much i needed it.
I love this feeling in actual games. Finding the line is so satisfying.
I like how this play works exactly how the song says it does and Remy isn't trolling us at all with the boardstate or rules
except it's not possible because creeping mold is a sorcery. the solution would be to use veil of summer, block with one of the two untappeds (or both, even), and then creeping mold the next turn, though it's not really necessary since he's tapped he can't block the shadow anyway
@@OscarGilFerrer Ok, except veil of summer would also draw a card. Since he only has one card in library, he would then lose on the next draw step.
@@OscarGilFerrer he actually just cannot win unless the opponent removes his Persecutor for him, since state-based effects won't check until it returns to the field during the flicker effect.
@@lucasriddle3431 Except veil of summer only draws a card when your opponent has cast a blue or black spell. Since curtain's call is still on the stack and unresolved the draw part of veil does not activate
@@ky1i316 Cast =/= resolved. He has already cast the spell (that's how it got from his hand to the stack), but it hasn't resolved. Since the spell has been cast, Veil of Summer counts it.
This is the first mtgremy vid that has procced the "No picture in picture for music" on my phone, our boy has made it
Merchant that's old and grey.... 10/10 brilliant! Never can play him again without singing this!
It doesn't always come to you but oh man, those times when then clouds part, and you see.....THE PLAY.....that makes a million mana screws all worthwhile
Remy just likes to see us tell him how cards work
He simply has a Vedalken Orrery and a pacified Containment Priest in play just out of shot.
The level of musical parody you're able to hit is consistently amazing. The original song is one of my favorites and I was grinning the whole time as the "puzzle" was introduced.
I see a true man of culture, using Dragon shield box for (i guess) keeping deck in it while never using sleeves.
This play is the equivalent of getting really drunk and thinking you’ve figured out how to fix all the problems in your life
The worst offense in this scenario is not the illegal plays, but the fact that the players are sitting at a right angle from each other.
4 player game and the players opposite each of them already got knocked out?
Lol “A merchant that’s old and gray. . .” was one of the best lines ever. Zombie
Not going to say anything about the holes in this plot other than: Wow, you sure have a knack for making nerds feel compelled to leave a comment.
You earned this one.
In my best Bernie voice, "I am once again asking you, for a parody video on Jolene, The Plunder Queen to Dolly Parton's Jolene"
that writes itsself
@@aringrey Jolene, Jolene, The Plunder Queen. I'm begging of you please don't take my mana.
I just want to say, The Way is one of my favorite songs of all time, and this is an all-timer parody. I've had a huge grin from ear to ear watching this a few times in a row, what a great song and video! good job Remy!
Definitely a Top 10 song of those that includes the phrase: "when state-based effects check"
You know 9 others?
Fantastic parody of a great song, yet another banger from Remy to add to the list
What's the original song, if you don't mind me asking?
@@aliertufekci1993 Fastball - The Way
@@dac2007 Thanks!
My take away is that Gary will now be called "the merchant that's old and grey" and that made my week
By far the most masterfully presented parody to date Remy. Such an intricate line, just amazing.
IKR! the build up is so good.. and the rest too lol
This parody is so good I get the same tingles from it as I do the original song. Fucking. Masterpiece.
I mean I too would probably be too focused on my opponent's catchy song to notice every mistake he makes.
Saw the thumbnail and was pleased to hear this song. Miss the 90s.
Me: "wow, Remy's deck actually makes some sense and has a consistent theme this video, cool"
Me replaying the song for the 32nd time: "...his lands tap for every color but the one he's primarily using"...
The bait is that the board state was consistent the whole time instead of randomly changing for once :P
A play like that... into a rhyming lyric... You are something else my friend.
I love how your brain works!
So many plays that almost work in a row, brilliant.
Another absolute masterpiece to listen to before every game of magic with my play group.
That was absolutely brilliant!!!! Now I love Remy as much as I love Fastball!!!!!!! Everyone should do themselves a favor and check out the rest of that album. It was really good!!!
I just noticed this... new ring on that hand. Congratulations!!
Ooh, a new Remy video!
There are actually no rules mistakes in this video. The volume of people looking forward to new Remy videos has simply caused a leyline of anticipation to form under his house, giving all his cards flash.
Meanwhile, what might *look* like an Abyssal Persecutor is *actually* the clone from Snappy, which is why he calls it a rare (Persecutor is mythic). And of course we are watching the video through a Possessed Portal, which is why he doesn't draw off the Veil *or* at the beginning of his turn.
This also explains why the opponent doesn't have a rat token, the portal ate it.
...I can't explain why the Lynx doesn't seem to have any counters, though. So I guess there's *one* mistake.
What if the other player killed his rat and then cast heartless act on the lynx during Remy's end step on the previous turn, Which would definitely be the number 1 target for heartless act.... definitely.
Also veil of summer doesn't make him draw a card since he hasn't cast a black or blue spell yet, curtains call is on the stack and hasn't resolved yet.
Though him casting a sorcery as an instant is a mistake though. But to be fair his opponent is cheating as well, unless there are 3 other players outside of eyes view on the table there should be no way for him to cast curtain's call with 2 (tapped) land.
@@ky1i316 Spells don't need to resolve to count as casted :) You'll draw a card with the Veil, even if you are using it as protection against a Spell on the Stack.
I feel like Remy puts in the little rules mistakes like Easter eggs for us to fight over
Another brilliant piece. Also, thanks for drawing my attention to the original song, I did not know it (though I probably should, i was in my teens when it hit the charts), and now I cannot get enough of it ;)
I always comeback to this song as for me it describe one of those nice little moments we all love in magic. So glad Remy got to 100k subscribers, its well deserved
I can't count how many times your parodies have introduced me to a new band! Awesome videos!
Theory: Opponent has a Narset, Remy has any number of effects that let him cast sorceries as though they had flash, and the Abyssal Protector was a copy token or Clone and they used the Abyssal Protector card just to simplify it.
2:32 this would not work right? cause state bases actions are checked after resolving the effect?
That's, like, the point lol. Creeping mold is a sorcery too
I also appreciate the dragon shield sleeve box next to Remy, then all cards unsleeved. A madman.
This feels like those challenges in the Duels games
A video on my birthday!!! Amazing video as usual!
after 10 years just being a watcher here on UA-cam, this is problably the third time I fell the need to post a comment on a video, so here it goes...
what a amazing parody, there is so much love and care in the production and lyrics, to such a level that I do prefer this version over the original, and already added to my personal playlist
thank you so much for such a gift Remy, I really cant put into words how it fells to see such a incredible talent like yours being put into good use
I am glad to see you getting the sucess and recognition that you deserve, which is far from what I believe you can achieve, but still very heartwarming to see
keep being awesome man, and I will keep cheering on here!
MTG Meets one of my Favorite songs . . . .Chefs Kiss Remy
I recently discovered your channel and I love all these parody videos
Looks like someone wrote in to Judge's Mailsack about this one.😄
Unfortunately Remy loses.
Creeping mold is a sorcery, so the only way to survive is by blocking. He needs to cast Veil of summer then.
Veil of summer makes him draw a card, and as he has only one left in his deck, he will attempt to draw on his next turn and die. He didn't find the right path to victory, he only found a way to trick his oponent...
I always suspected Remy was a cheater
Whoosh
What gave it away: The twenty copies of Doomblade in his deck or the fact he never has the right amount/colour of lands to cast stuff with?
Have you SEEN the mana pool of his other songs?
That's the point, none of it should actually work. Also, state based actions are not checked during abilities resolving, so even if all of the above wasn't the case, the abyssal persecutor would still stop him winning.
The other player also can't cast a 5 mana spell off two lands
Time to incessantly share this with all my friends, this is way too good.
Laughing so hard for so many reasons. The gold token was definitely gifted from the gods.
It's always fun when one of the players stumble into a win that was unexpected. Good times, Remy!
I just found your channel today and I must say your parody of this song is superb. This is a gem.
You have many more fantastic parody songs of his to watch :)
@@devontufts1291 thanks for the heads up! I will check those out.
and another masterpiece goes into the MTGRemy playlist
Banger as always! Too bad we couldn't sac our own demon to Doom Foretold :(
Remy songs are just too good and wholesome for this platform; We don't deserve them.
so gooood!
If the creeping mold was an actual instant speed removal spell, and the veil of summer was a protection/counter that doesn't kill you to draw next turn, and had the right mana... there actually IS a play, and it's pretty cool. Protect your blockers, block the shardless with Lynx, remove your Lynx before damage is dealt. Your turn, play Doom Foretold, swing with Hearth and Home to bounce Gary and drain them. Next turn, they're forced to sac Shardless, and if they don't have 7 damage from hand next turn, you sac Persecutor on the upkeep before draw, and they lose as a state based action before you draw from an empty deck.
I miss the 90s.
Ok you killed all my blockers. I'm hosed if I miss play here.
I deal 4 burn damage.
I pass turn.
During upkeep what's your life?
"1"
I win. Good game.
"What?!"
Fate Unraveler.
Love how you mention this situation in the latest Judge's mailsack video.
Remy, you never miss. Thanks for bringing this song back.
There are no SBA's when resolving Sword of Hearth and Home. There was no winning play given the circumstances
You blink the Demon stopping the win attempt then when it’s gone the SBA actions apply and win but he’d already cheated twice so it doesn’t really mayyer
@@TallestAutumn The game doesn't check SBAs until the effect of the sword is completely done and by that point the abyssal persecutor is already on the battlefield again.
@@TallestAutumn sba ocurs before anyone gets priority, but only after the object finishes resolving. The demon is exiled and returned to the battlefield while the sword trigger is resolving, so before SBA takes place.
It doesnt matter tho, as WayRemy would have lost due to mill if he drew the card from veil of summer.
yup, I misread the card
There could be lines that win, depending on what that last topdeck is.
Always a pleasure when one of these show up in my subscription
Remy great choice of Song, its one of my favorites.
I just finished listening to this song on my drive home to come and see this beautiful remake.
Thanks Remy a blessing your talent is to the mtg community.
"Bro..."
"What?"
"Your lynx is hungry"
Thanks for cheering me up today
This is easily one of my favorite songs and you somehow transformed it into a crazy good song that plays so freaking god-damned well into mtg. Well freaking done, God of the parody!!!
Thank you very much for the wonderful song, master Remy.
Another awesome parody! I also love that Remy is introducing me to great songs I would otherwise have never known about. Thanks for that!
Thanks for posting this literally as my first break at work started haha. Good work outlander ❤️
Another great song parody! I'm really surprised that you haven't done a "Burning Down the House" video yet. (Talking Heads and the mtg Card!) lots of potential there. Please add it to the list if that particular tune gets your fire going! 🔥🎶
This tune I haven't heard in almost a decade but glad that is was this version because it's so good
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Legend says that, just like the original, this was based on a true story.
List of the intentional rules mistakes for those curious :D
- Creeping mold is a sorcery and can't be cast as an instant
- Veil of summer would draw a card, making him lose at the next draw step
- State based effects don't apply while an ability is resolving, and hence Abyssal Persecutor would return before being able to win.
There also wasn't a rat token put to play for the opponent, which could have blocked the only attacker. But that would have changed the scenario enough that the attacks would have been different.
The song slaps, but Creeping Mold is a sorcery. Also, if he's only got one card left in his deck, he'll have to draw it from Veil of Summer and will then lose the game on his own draw step. And no, I am not any fun at parties.
My thoughts exactly kekw
That's the point, none of it should actually work. Also, state based actions are not checked during abilities resolving, so even if all of the above wasn't the case, the abyssal persecutor would still stop him winning.
well the opponent couldn't have cast Curtains Call anyways with only two lands, both of which were tapped prior to combat.
@@keldaris8625 Actually this play could still be legal, it could have been the cascade trigger from sharpless agent.
@@lebrontocraptors5106 A. Shardless Agent has is 3 cmc. So the cascade trigger could only cast a 2cmc or lower spell.
B. Cascade triggers on cast. Meaning the spell thatbis being cascaded into resolves before the spell with cascade does.
As always awesome
Hell yeah! Always good with some Remy
Thank you so much Remy for doing a parody of one of my favorite songs
Remy's the only person alive to be able to cast a double black Spell from Red Green and blue lands.^^
Yessss I have been waiting for a new parody
With only one card left in library he will die due two the two draws he needs to take (one from veil of summer and one from draw step). Otherwise perfect video unless you add on the opponent calling judge for him skipping his draw step but I am not sure how that fits musically.
XD
And Creeping Mold being a Sorcery.
That's the point, none of it should actually work. He decks out from the Veil of Summer, Creeping Mold is a sorcery, state based actions are not checked during abilities resolving, so even if all of the above wasn't the case, the Abyssal Persecutor would still stop him winning.
AND none of that mattered because the opponent didn't have enough mana to cast the curtain's call.
I like the idea of making rules mistakes for engagement :D here is what I found:
Creeping mold is a sorcery
Veil of summer draws a card, which would have been the last in library and killed him in draw step
Sword of hearth and home returns the creature before SBA are checked, meaning his opponent survives
And Land not matching up to permanents obviously :)
