    Actually, they specifically addressed the curse being lifted when they first appear in their witch costumes in the end. The first witch cast a spell to protect the women from falling in love, instead it turned into a curse over time to create heartbreak instead of preventing it. When Sally and Jilly's love for each other protected Jilly from a man trying to cause her harm, it forced him out and sealed their blood bond, exorcising the curse along with him. The producers did actually contact witches to make sure they're portrayed accurately to beliefs and how they do spellwork. If a spell is done, it must be reversed to be undone.

    13:00 -- though it's implied to be romantic love (vs explicitly stated), it *is* directly stated that if a _man_ falls in love with an Owens woman; so the love the girls/aunts feel for each other isn't included in that in any case.
    15:18 -- Jimmy has the keys with him (twirling on his finger) while he's peeing; that's why they can't leave.
    16:48 -- the aunts are gone with the girls to a mystical retreat (they mentioned it while Sally was leaving to go to Jillian, but I think you were talking and didn't hear it); Sidenote: the door hitting Jimmy's head was an accident and not intended, but it looked good/was a touch funny so the director left it in. (The actor also did a good job "staying dead" as it genuinely whacked him in the head but he didn't react to it.)
    23:15 -- the piece of rope each of the girls is wearing is enchanted to protect them from harm (as the Aunt's commented on before leaving), which is why they are never present, directly, when Jimmy's ghost influences things/manifests. Also, the aunts and girls snapped out of being "sloppy" drunk when they realized something very dangerous was amiss/present; they were all still drunk (hence the hangovers the next morning), but got super-serious because their instincts kicked in.
    28:02 -- she wasn't watching the door for the detective, she was watching the door/hallway in case Sally was coming towards there (as Sally doesn't want the girls doing magic and Jillian has them helping her make the potion to send the detective away).
    36:30 -- as Sally notes later, it's the faith/belief that the detective has as channeled through his badge that harmed and warded off (though didn't destroy) Jimmy; it's the same metaphysical principle behind a religious symbol warding off vampires and similar.
    43:17 -- the brew in the pot was enchanted to keep his spirit in the underworld/bind him to his grave (death), as Aunt Frances said while stirring the pot earlier in the kitchen.
    Additional note: it wasn't that Sally conjured the detective out of nowhere, but rather (as intimated in other scenes where the aunts/girls have foresight and magical insight) she as a girl was unconsciously foreseeing the man she would eventually live her life with. Also, if you go back and rewatch those final scenes, Sally remarks (in voice-over) that the breaking of the curse happened when she and Jillian broke the things happening in the circle.
    *****
    I like watching you guys watching "x", but you really seemed to drop the ball paying attention to things being said by various characters in this movie/reaction -- you missed a lot of stuff that directly answered questions you had/weren't "getting" at different times (more than I even time-stamped above, but I just hit the more major ones).

      A lot of this movie does seep more in & you notice more as you watch it more.
      Though they did miss a lot, but that’s what happens when you watch things & are making jokes & enjoying a movie with others.
      Though I loved this movie from the first time, I think other people need to watch it a 2nd time to notice more things. Or maybe pay less attention to the detective’s eyes. 😹😹😹

He was in a really sexy, steamy bad boy movie with Darryl Hannah called 'Reckless', he was gorgeous & funny in 'Desperately Seeking Susan' (with Madonna, but Rosanna Arquette was really the lead). Also played Johnny Depp's older brother in 'Benny & Joon', a great early 90s movie. Also played Brad Pitt's oldest brother in the epic, 'Legends of the Fall'. Also in 'Michael Collins' with Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts & a bunch of great people. While everyone is gushing over ‘Hocus Pocus’ in October, I’m basking in the glory that is ‘Practical Magic’. It’s a rare example of a film being much better than the book it’s based on. In the novel, the supernatural elements are far more subtle which I think would have made the film rather dull if they were faithful to the source material. A few pieces of trivia for anyone who’s interested:
    1) ‘Practical Magic’ is the first of 3 novels. The second, titled “The Rules of Magic” is based on the upbringing of the aunts and their brother (also a witch) and the third “Magic Lessons” which is the coming of age origin story of Maria, the matriarch of their family.
    2) The film changed a variety of things including the setting; both sisters move away from the family home in the novel causing most of the events to occur at Sally’s home in the suburbs. Sally does not own an apothecary of any kind but rather works at school. They opted for brunettes and redheads in the film instead of brunettes and blondes. Lastly, all the Owen’s family members share a signature grey eye color.
    3) While they leave it somewhat ambiguous in the film, the aunts are actually Sally and Gillian’s GREAT aunts. I always felt the film implies their mother, Regina, was the aunt’s sister when in fact, she is their niece; she’s the daughter of their brother who I mentioned earlier. That said, the second novel which outlines this detail didn’t come out until 2017.
    4) The house in the film is just a shell while the interiors were a sound stage. The house was constructed purely for the film and promptly torn down at the end of filming; furthermore, the land used for the location of their house was a preserve and there were strict guidelines they had to follow in order to film there including they couldn’t “break ground”. This meant the lush gardens and vegetation depicted in the film are actually built ABOVE the ground, not in it.

      First, I had no idea there was a book, but I think I did get the impression Jet and Frances were the aunt to Sally and Gillian's mom from the movie. I had no idea there were any brothers in the family, though it makes sense for the name to carry forwards in time. While it's reasonable that Sally, in the 1980s-1990s could have kept her maiden name or maybe her husband took her name out of love for her, it's a lot less likely to find that as you go back in history.
      I think I just sort of assumed that Maria had a daughter who had 2 daughters of her own, and so on and so on down the line, but that would mean there would be a LOT of Owens witches running around New England, lol. That, or only one of the daughters in each generation had two daughters of her own. But either way, there had to be more than 2 kids per generation for Jet and Frances to be the aunts to Gillian and Sally, or one of them would have been called Grandma.

  • @RyflyRN
    @RyflyRN День тому

    The spell young Sally cast wasn't to create man, it was a spell on herself that she would only fall in love with someone who possessed all of those qualities she imagined. She thought no one would ever possibly possess those qualities, therefore she guaranteed that she would never fall in love, but unbeknownst to her, that boy actually already existed.

    I love how magic is depicted in this movie... as something very natural, fluid, part of the nature - as Miss Snape would say . no silly incantations or wand waving. The whole "night talk" scene between two sisters...like...was she there for real, or not, or was it just in their dreams...I love it

    • @seaneendelong8065
      @seaneendelong8065 19 днів тому

      Yes, other than the silly halloween roof closing scene it is very authentic and real about how actual bloodline witchcraft works
      I love how they just "have gifts" individually and they manifest when ready for them, how it is totally internal and almost instinctive when used.... with just a bit of knowledge and instruction and tools training as time passes.
      This is indeed how real witch gifts exist and are refined.

    So, how I understood it as a kid was that her first "true love" (her husband and children's father) died, and therefore "took one for the team" if you will. So, thereby letting Gary (Hallet) be free from the curse. Her kids will still suffer though and theirs and so on. But like I think if your first true love dies, then that opens the door for you to still love another and have them not die. That's how I saw it anyway.

    So it’s not actually a goof with the eyes. Aiden Quinn actually has one green eye one blue. It’s not edited in. It’s rare, but not impossible pigmentation of the eyes. It might not have been as visible in other lighting in the movie, but his eyes naturally are that color.

    The curse was broken and no.. Officer Hallet didn't do anything wrong, not a crooked cop, because it was truly an accidental death... Do you really think he should have prosecuted the sisters? For Jimmy?! A murderer! No! So no going after Gary ... he is one of the good guys.

    Because the two seem to be often spoken in the same breath, I will admit that I’ve always preferred this movie over Hocus Pocus. Maybe it’s the power of Aidan Quinn that compels me or the combined acting talents of Quinn, Kidman, Bullock, Wiest and Channing, with support from Chloe Webb and Margo Martindale, and an assist from Goran Visnjic (Luka from ER, to me!). I’ve never cared for the characters in Hocus Pocus!
    Atanyrate, this was a fun surprise in August. Keep it coming, and I’d love to see a reaction to Dead Calm - especially in October…

    Part of her spell was that he would know her favorite song. And in the kitchen when sally is getting plates ready she starts to hum and almost instinctively he follows her as he’s flipping the pancake that’s something els the daughter noticed.

    Officer Hallet’s badge (star) is his talisman, a personal protective charm. Sally explained earlier that as a cop, he believes it to have power to help him stop the bad guys, and that kind of belief gives it power in multiple ways. It wards off Jimmy in the attic, not killing him, because Gary uses it as a symbol of protection, stopping Jimmy from doing any further damage to them… In that scene at least 😅. Great reactions ❤

    I think they lifted the curse but even if they didn't. I really believe Gallet it's safe because he's part of a spell. It's not real. That's kind of sad but at the same time they can both live the rest of their lives feeling like they're in love.
