    1. At the book Claudia is only 5 years old.
    2. She was so little, she used to climb Luoi and sat on his elbow.
    3. The stronger the vampire, less they need to sleep. Lestat blood was powerful, thats why Loui wakes before the theater vampires and thus he was able to kill them.
    4. The stronger the vampire, more they can tolarate fire before burn up. The theater vampires were so weak, they would ignite just by standing close to the flames.

We must have read different books. The movie changed the characters personalities. The TV show changed the timeline. But the real themes of the book were reflected in the TV show 99% better than the movie. Anne used to tell all who would listen that Lestat and Louis were a same sex couple. That was completely covered up with the movie. Armand turned Daniel in the books. Not Lestat. Armand and Louis were together 70 years in the book. Did not part right after Claudia was destroyed. Louis was given a "dead" wife in the movie. Paul was completely cut out of the movie. The changes from the book to the movie go on and on. Again, to wipe clean the fact that Anne's Vampires had relationships with each other. The basic story was told in the movie. But it lacked a "heart and soul". Was just a narration of the story. Most of the emotion was left out. And the loving relationship between Lestat and Louis was muted.

The theme of the book is totally represented in the show as well Armand and Louis relationship. Which I love. But a movie vs a tv series, a lot more can be told. Also, 1994 was a completely different time compared to today. The theme of the book wouldn’t have gone well in a major blockbuster movie. Let’s also not forget Anne Rice wrote the screenplay to the movie. They’re both great in my opinion anyways. Each version portrays the book well.

And her sequels made it perfectly clear that Lestat and Louis were a couple. You are right about the time of the book and movie though. In the tv show Louis turned in 1910, in the movie (and the book) it was 1791. In the show (and the book) his brother dies, in the movie its his wife and child (to desperately try to make it less gay 😂). In the books basically all vamps are bisexual, its only in the show Louis is specifically gay. In the show Claudia is 14, in the movie she's 11, in the book she's 5. Louis being a plantation owner in the original story and then being black in the adaptation is kind of interesting poetic justice for his character, I will say lol. Essentially in the books, you don't find out a lot of the present day stuff until after the first book, but Armand left Louis shortly before the interview because like...he was so passionless, indifferent and depressed, he tried to confess to being the reason for Paris to make him angry only to find out he already knew and just simply didn't care enough to hate him for what happened to Claudia, and had just stayed with him all those years in like this bizarre 'whatever' kind of spiteful companionship. Also in the book its Armand that stalks Daniel after the Interview (unsurprisingly) lol. They also filmed scenes of Lestat in Paris, but they were removed.

The movie is much more different than the book in themes and emotion. The TV show is what Anne wanted the viewers to understand. This is a love story. Not just a historical telling of Vampires lives. The movie had nothing to do with the deeper relationship that Anne showed in her books. Was basically a retelling of the story with two famous actors trying hard to not show that Lestat and Louis loved each other. In that aspect they did a great job. But in being true to the emotions of Anne's writing. The TV show is her legacy. She pushed to have this version of her story told. It took almost 50 years. But she finally was able to find someone to be true to her original vision of these Vampires.

  • @serralinda73

I kind of hate that you watched the TV show first, because this version is much closer to the book and it's a very well--made movie in every aspect (even with the now-corny special effects and make-up). Anne Rice's writing style is very melodramatic and operatic, so the whole tone of this movie - even the bizarre humor - fits very nicely. And Cruise and Pitt fit the original versions of the characters very well. In the later books you learn that vampires lose all sexual drive - it becomes the thirst for blood drinking/killing. There's no outward signs of Louis and Lestat being in a gay relationship, though it's still clear that they loved each other and created a little vampire family with Claudia - who was only 6 (permanently) in the book. Still, vampires don't care about what we humans would call our sexual preferences since they don't have sex and they fall in love with anyone who appeals to them.
Anne Rice wrote this story to begin with as a way to deal with the death of her little girl - so Claudia is given a chance to live in this story...for a while.

But they didn't in the movie and the question of are they going to actually be in a relationship?...ehhhh... As much as they could be in 1995... The movie is super subtexty and super no homoy... And so a LOT of people watched the movie and didn't understand that they were meant to be in a romantic relationship together 🤣🤣🤣 but even still the movie did get pretty significant homophobic backlash within the media... So you know the script writers did what they could at the time but it was not a very accepting time period compared to current day regarding depictions of homosexuality.... So like yeah the subtext is there that they're in a romantic relationship in the movie... But it's VERY much text text in the show, as you saw. 🤣

It's a shame you saw the show first, the show is great, but it's far from how the story is in its original form. Even Anne Rice was a producer on the show, but stepped away from it after they made so many changes. This movie also has its changes but it still follows the original closer than the show. Still glad you could enjoy it for what it is.
Edit: Neither the show or the movie got Anne Rices vampire relationships right. The show turned it up to 11 and the movie was set at just a simmer. The thing with her vampires is they have relationships that are passionate and deeply loving. It's a huge part of their lives. They love pansexually and cannot physically make love. Sex is not a thing for these vampires, the males nethers become useless and shriveled, and females can have intercourse with humans but they don't have any sensation. Blood is described as a 1000 times more pleasurable and indescribable compared to anything you experience as a human. So sex isn't even missed. Also they tend not to spill any drops of blood while feeding it's that precious to a vampire, so they do kill humans for more than food if they have to, but they never spill any blood.

    • @AnxietyRat

I mean the show got rid of the no sex detail because Anne DID eventually retcon that detail within the book series... And so the show didn't want to have to retcon that detail so they just got rid of it. That's the benefit of having the full series to look at and adapt instead of just going book by book. And the writers have said very openly that they are doing a full series adaptation NOT a book by book adaptation which is why they're adding some book details that don't actually appear in the book they're adapting per season. They sprinkling in future book stuff bc they are able to do that.... I'm pretty sure the only reason that she even had the no sex thing in the first place was because it was the 70s when she first started writing... And absolutely back then she HAD to censor stuff... And so her characters were clearly in a homosexual romantic relationship but she couldn't actually depict them having sex because of censorship at the time... she wouldn't have been able to get her book published 🤷‍♀️ she did actually want her vampires to be able to have sex... Because she very clearly makes it a thing her CAN DO as time goes on and censorship calms down within publishing houses... Even if biting and the exchange of blood is superior to sex... It's clear that she didn't hate the concept of her vampires fucking. and so in the show they do both... Just like, eventually, within the book series they do both as forms of intimacy... With blood drinking being the MORE intimate thing to do ...but physical sex is still a form of intimacy for them. 🤷‍♀️ Also not all the male vampires genitals shrivel up... Lestat is actually known to have a permanent erection... So there's that! He just doesn't do anything with it...but that's very much a detail about him that's a thing. 🤣
As far as I understand she didn't actually step out because of the changes being made she stepped out when the networks were like duking out over who would be the one to adapt to the show... And one network got it ...but then gave it to AMC, if I'm remembering correctly and so once that switch happened she was getting really sick and so she stepped out... it had nothing to do with the changes or the writer's room. 🤷‍♀️ Chris is a different story he might have actually stepped out due to the changes or due to having to put all of his focus on his mom because her health was not good. We don't know these people in real life and so I don't think we're ever going to get an actual answer due to like nda's and stuff that were probably signed. But he hasn't said anything positive or negative regarding the show... Which kind of points towards an NDA, IMO. There isn't really any other reason why he would be COMPLETELY silent when his mother's life work is finally getting adapted into a long form media 🤷‍♀️ But everything that I've read about the situation doesn't point towards them stepping out because of the changes made. Anne was always kind of okay with changes being made to her book in adaptations... Louis was going to be a woman for the movie, at one point!... Which would actually change things a lot but she was willing to do that if it meant that the movie would pass the censorship and get made... Thankfully, that didn't have to happen but yeah Anne was willing to do that... Was willing to make such a drastic change to the material... By completely getting rid of the homosexual relationship. None of the TV show changes have been THAT potentially detrimental to the story...so I think she was fine with it... From what I understand scripts were being written by the time she did have to leave due to health issues so she probably read some of it, at that point. 🤷‍♀️ Idk none of us know the EXACT intricacies of what was going on. And we probably never will... But that's what I am other people within the fandom have been able to glean from interviews and social media posts and stuff. Anne was okay with changes... and it honestly does not look like she left because of the changes the show was making.

@@AnxietyRat a retcon is when something that is untrue becomes the truth all of the sudden and made to have somehow always been true to the story. Her finding a way for the vampires to have sex isn't a retcon because there was a very long time when they couldn't, and that is still cannon. The showrunners just wanted the vampires to have sex because vampires are innately sexy. Not because they just didn't want to incorporate it later in the story. Anne has said it many times over the years she didn't write with the intention of any providing undertones of any sexuality or belief. It's just how the story came out and was easily interpreted by so many people. I'm just saying Sex is so human, and the fact that for so long these vampires had relationships that were based on true interest in the individual and their beauty, both mental and physical without the messiness and drama that sex brings to the table. That is so much more fascinating. And they had plenty of drama to spare anyways. I love the show, and the essence is there, the characters are their book counterparts and the acting is phenomenal. It's the relationship dynamics that take me out of it. For what are supposed to be no human characters fighting about the same mundane human petty dramas, that shouldn't affect them. The sex in the series causes drama that the vampires in the books would find fascinating and watch for hours, for the vampires couldn't understand how something so simple could hold so much weight over the lives of the living. Idk I just liked that part of the books better.

    • @AnxietyRat

@@mr.narrator6781 That's semantics. Pretty much EVERYONE I have EVER talked to with in this fandom has called it a retcon. Because vampires physically could not have sex prior to Anne changing her vampire lore...with "Science" ... But it was still absolutely a lore change... It was still very clearly a change due to censorship changing as the decades went on... I still don't think Anne would hate the fact that they've added sex into things. She was pretty sex-positive when she was alive.... She wrote erotic BDSM Sleeping Beauty fanfiction essentially for fucks sake... She was probably FINE with sex being added into the show... I would be extremely extremely surprised if she was upset about it tbh. But yeah, the show absolutely added it in because sex sells and vampires are sexy... That's not a surprise. It's absolutely one of the reasons why I watched the show... And one of the reasons why I watched True Blood... First couple of seasons of it, anyway. Because vampires are sexy 🤷‍♀️ and sex sells.

The whole story with Paul happened in the books. Also, Lestat didn't show up at the end with Daniel. As for the romance, Louis did omit most of it in the interview (even if he did talk about how beautiful Lestat and Armand were, and had a kid with one of them). During your outro you hit on all the reasons why I really wish you guys had watched the movie before the show. I have yet to see it, but I expect the show would have more time to do justice to the story, and that they would try to improve upon all of the complaints the book fans had about the film. I'm not a diehard fan, but I have always enjoyed watching the movie and only considered a few points a bit cheesy. So to me it was strange to see how it was practically like a comedy hour for you guys, which I don't think would have been the case had you watched the film first. I'm glad you guys enjoyed watching it. I just fear the same kind of reaction should you guys ever get around to reacting to the film version of One Day with Anne Hathway and Jim Sturgess and Em and Dex. I agree that it's fun to watch different versions of a story and compare them. And of course, there's no rule or law about needing to start with one particular version, but given the quality of shows nowadays, it just seems unfair because of course the newer and updated version is likely going to be more favored by younger generations. I thought Brad and Tom were great in the roles. I remember hearing about how people thought Tom was miscast (even Anne Rice hated that he was cast as Lestat), but he blew everyone away (at the time) with his performance. For me, it was the first time seeing him play a villain and I thought he did great. As did Brad, who was haunting as Louis. And Kirsten!! I completely agree that she stole the show. I believe this was her first *major* movie role and clearly, she was destined to become a big star. I wrote a whole novel here...yikes!

I watched the film first (the first weekend it was released, after having read the book in the 80s) and thought it was very cheesy when I watched it and agreed with Anne about Tom. So I think it's one of those YMMV situations. They watched the original Top Gun first and then the newer one and loved the newer one more, so I don't think they'd necessarily have liked the IWTV movie more if they'd watched it first....I guess there's no way to tell at this point. But I'm one of their "older" audience and agreed with them, so that's my anecdotal - purely unscientific - data. 😆 (and the series is one of the best series I've seen in years)

I agree, I think Jacob and Sam do a great job on the show but Brad and Tom will always be Louis and Lestat, they're the ones I pictured when I read all of the books in the Vampire Chronicles so this film holds a special place in my heart. I personally prefer this movie in terms of the New Orleans setting but I appreciate the updated aesthetics. As a classic horror/gothic fan though it really is sad to see all the fun horror elements get tamed to fit a more aesthetically driven and "prestige" audience but what can you do?

@@I_Kare true, but Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel, not a remake. And in that case, I think the fact that they had viewed TG first only aided in their enjoyment of TGM because they knew the background and history of the characters. I was championing for them to watch the film version of IWTV when people started requesting the show on their patreon because I knew it would be a great primer/introduction to the story. I'm pretty sure they still would've ended up loving the show version more, but I do think they would've been more impressed by the film had they watched it first.

Also this movie has no connection to the TV show. They are two completely separate entities.

You guys should watch the movie "queen of the damned" it's also based off the same book series and has Lestat but its totally different!! He becomes a rock star 😂

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have always been my Louis and Lestat. watching you both compare this to the show actually made me want to watch the show. I highly recommend reading the books because they dive so much deeper into the story. also, the movie is based pretty closely on the books. from what I heard you guys say, it seems like they took a lot of liberties with the show, adding and changing things to update it from the '90s.

There are only 3 books. Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and Queen of the Damned. She has many other books but these are The Vampire Chronicles. Great to hear Zuff is back and doing well. Hope to see him back on your UA-cam channel soon watching more Vampire Diaries! Hello from sunny Florida 🌞🌴
