This song always brings my mind to a lost soulmate and love whose memories still pull at the emotional strings of my heart. It is a bittersweet. Remembering the joy and pain of a lost love. God bless her where ever she is now.
I saw John Hartford in the Nashville airport with his banjo and wanted to say something reasonable if i got a chance. It happened that we came face to face at one point and I said. Thank you so much for all your music. Your' welcome he said with a John hartford smile. love him b also a banjo player but no picker like jh
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written, even if I am not what you might call a blue-grass fan...I have always just loved this song, it gets to me...
Many years ago I watched a special with john Hartford and Jo-El Sonnier , talk about spectacular, their breathtaking performances left a permanent mark in my memory and in my heart, simply awesome they both were, and these many years later, my opinion is still the same, then , now , and forever American entertainers Ne Plus Ultra , like Woody, Hank, and Willie !!!!
This is the best version I've ever heard, out of a thousand outstanding renditions. A thousand years from now you will be able to hear people sing this song.
John was unique and a true performer. He was on TV a lot in the 60's and I think he, along with Flatt and Scruggs, really introduced Bluegrass to the mass of people outside the South. He had big respect for history and played in an authentic old-timey style.
I find this the most comforting song to listen to and sing along and it brings all the men I've ever loved and who've ever loved me flowing through the rivers of my memory. Thank you John, and how I wish I could play the banjo!
You are so missed John Hartford...Is there a better song ever been written? If that doesn't make you smile and cry at the same time you aren't human...PEACE
I was born and raised in the boston area and never got much exposure to this kind of music. I thank my extended family from the west for introducing me to John Hartford awhile back. Still sad he is no longer with us. He is awesome. One of those rare talents that you never get sick of.
John Cowan Hartford, who doesn't have just a booth in Heaven but (and I have this on good authority) a whole giant, f***in' THEME PARK that stretches from here to Orion, did, for so many of us 20th century types epitomize Americana ... you know, paddlewheelers, banjos, making Glen Campbell a Country star, writing some of the greatest songs that never occurred to Jimmy Webb. .... Well, here's a neat little Americana fact you may not know: John Cowan Hartford was born in my home town -- New York, NY.
Lovely!! Hey steam powered aeroplane etc. Loved the man!!! All he did and all he sang about! I have to go to work in tall buildings!! Anyone know that song? I sing it to myself sometimes when I go to work sometimes. By the way, don't leave your records in the sun. You know what happens!!!
I seriously doubt you could play like that drunk. He does sound a little nasal but hey - he always did. This is a knockout version - thanks for the post.
+lazarlin Well, only by the graces of southerners everywhere they may be. John was born in New York City, spent his formidable years in St Louis, then became a man of the universe and finally the ages. I'm proud to call him a Southerner.
try as they will, this tune is cursed with heavy humidity. try as you will. cursed with heavy humidity. less humidity means more suspandu.. it means more sustain of the note..

So true ........sadly no one understands
People will be listening to this song as long as humans exist.
Yes this has been recorded by many, and I must say most done very well. However this song was written, published and sang by John Hartford
Yes I agree It was a great rendition of his own song. For some reason it was taken off youtube. But it would be great to see it back on
Just can't get any better than John Hartford. Saw him in Indianapolis in the 70's. Will NEVER forget it.
I seriously doubt you could play like that drunk. He does sound a little nasal but hey - he always did. This is a knockout version - thanks for the post.
Drunk! Who said drunk? Ridiculous!
Yes Mike Compton - can't mistake him...WSM resurrected...
your recording technique is first class, as usuall
David Surkamp used to sing this.
@ironhorse11606 : Agreed. This song, albeit not this version, is a fair candidate for the greatest American song of the 1960s.
As a friend of Johns, I can't argue with the Lennon comparison. But that's an awesome tune, too.
This was recorded from a live performance?
Amazing!
BackToConstitution YEP YOUR RIGHT.GOOD OL' SOUTHERN BOY
