The first time I heard this song was when Hartford was performing a medley of fiddle tunes solo. He put it right in the middle of the medley for a real treat.
@jaymejohns I know that one version of this song (the version from which I learned it) was on the "Gum Tree Canoe" album--which I was so glad I got signed by John at the one concert of his I got the chance to see.
I think, this perfect song and its sophisticated musical form all started with newgrass and the NGR, too. As Sam Bush said "Without Aereo-Plain (and the Aereo-Plain band), there would be no newgrass music."
Great banjo playing. My favourite John Hartford tunes are 'Julia Belle Swain' and 'Let him go on mama', both featuring excellent banjo solos. Do videos exist of these?
@jaymejohns I know that he included a studio-recorded version of this song on the "Gum Tree Canoe" album (on which I got his autograph at the one concert of his I was able to see). MVH
I'm Still Here John Hartford Now trains are runnin' towards each other. Shotguns are pointed at my head. Tornado clouds are formin' o'er the crossroads. H-bombs are fallin' towards my bed, But I'm still here. I'm still here. Now, how 'bout that? My city may be fallin' But I'm still here The assassination squad has got their orders. Repossession man is on his way. Landlady's given me her notice. I'll get pitched out in the trash just any day, But I'm still here. I'm still here. Now, how 'bout that? I may have lost my lunchbox, But I'm still here. Well, the moths make my shirt, my britches. They're workin' on my hat, but I don't care. I haven't had a meal since the fire went out, An' all you do is stand around and stare, But I'm still here. I'm still here. Now, how 'bout that? I might not hear you laughin', But I'm still here. 14th on the album: The Love album/Housing project, 1968
The first time I met John Hartford, I said: "Mr. Hartford, I really enjoy your music.' He said: "Thank you. You're easily entertained."
LOL...never met him but sounds like him...what a gem!
Great song. I wish he was still here.
his best performances are when he does it all by himself
He just did his own thing. I love it. Super talent.
