Having played with Ashling for quite awhile in Krark Saka, this card is BERSERK. An absolutely deranged piece of cardboard. I'll be curious to see how the Ashling (in the zone) + Fury Storm deck does! And Pinnacle Monk creates a couple of deterministic loops, which rules. For Krark Saka, ultimately, I think that Flare, Ashling, and the MDFCs stick-with results pending on all the other stuff (including Powerbalance).
First big fan and really apprentice all the work you ya done for the deck As a krark saka player I’m curious I feel like there aren’t enough red creatures to sac DRC Monkey and dockside that’s all is it really worth to sac the Krark for flare and if I may ask what’s the deterministic loop with monk and how do you feel about Ral
A few krark notes: Ashling is cracked in half in the deck considering how she interacts with cards like twinflame allowing you to effectively reset her abilities. She can very quickly become a win condition especially with flare of Duplication which, when copied by krark, can infinitely copy itself and generate infinite magecraft triggers.
I run a casual Krark deck, how many of these cards are worth running? I also don't have kitten because I don't have a lot of rocks/tap abilities, should I?
One thing about Galvanic Discharge is that it really can't be deflecting swatted back at your own creature. It's why I'm cutting bolt for it in my Jund Dargo.

Cam, Static Prison can remove a One Ring and it'll be reset when it gets back in. Plus 3 turns is forever in cEDH. This is essentially "W: Exile a thing, the games probably over before it comes back."
I don’t play cEDH but damn do I love you guys lol great chemistry. I don’t understand all the ins and outs of cEDH but I learn a shit ton from you guys every time I watch. Even if I’m just a casual it helps me understand this game more, you guys rock
Glad to see great minds think alike. I've been in love with grim servant lately. First tutor finds ephemerate, and then those find dark ritual, vamp tutor. Tutor before the draw for saw in half. Use dark ritual to cast Saw in half. Two tutors for 2 drops, finds dockside and cthonian nightmare. Also if you're in reanimator. You can just find entomb reanimate for a razaketh or something
Stormdrake is very good. What you guys are doing most of the times is looking for very specific plays or lines why a card wouldnt work. And under selling the strong points. Also glad tyler joined the review need more.
Its like breathing fresh air listening to the Strix Serenade assessment. I had the same perspective vis a vis it and Stern Scolding. Felt like I was going insane in the pod groupchat when I was the only person calling it exceptionally mid.
Flare of Duplication (the red one) does NOT allow you to change targets of the original spell, it ONLY makes a copy (that you can point anywhere). Lots of comparisons were made (to Redirect, etc), so it wasn’t quite clear if everyone was on the same page. I mean, it’s still extremely good (copy a counter spell), but you can’t save your commander from a Swords, so I’m not sure it’s quite a 4.999.
My theory on why they have printed a lot of “pre combat main phase “ is they have printed a lot of stuff thag triggers additional upkeeps so they are trying tk keep some stuff so it doesn’t trigger off those extra upkeeps
i think the ashling point most people forget is if youre hellbent it still draws you a card from copying spells or casting from exile so if you use impulsive draw spells while hellbent you get say 2 exiled cards to cast plus a draw
1:11:23 since ral’s back gives the reduction until the end of your next turn, that means after the first turn it’s flipped you are technically capable of stacking the reduction to -2 which is neat.
Flare of Fortitude does give Hexproof against all of the channel abilities and can be done when tapped out which is nice, but I acknowledge it's very situational
Grim Servant having cmc 4 could be great in K'rrik since you can find it off of Fleshwrither / Dimir House Guard but then Grim Servant can find non-cmc 4 cards unlike Fleshwrither / Dimir House
1:09:25 Ral, Leyline Prodigy's +1 is NOT 'until the end of your next turn'. It is "until YOUR NEXT TURN'. The +1 doesn't cover your next turn, just that whole round between your turns.
It's not only that triggers happen independently from their sources(it doesn't matter unless a card points it out), it's that even if they did, hexproof and protection both key off of targeting, and ward doesn't target it. But now that I'm thinking about it, a counterspell with ward on the stack would be fire.
A benefit to hydroelectric specimen is its only one blue pip but being a creature also makes an interesting hit with cards like Withering Boon in mono black.
Static Prison is my sleeper pick of this set. Not only is it good for One Ring and a slew of other stuff mentioned in the video, but It can also be used to take care of a Dress Down if someone is trying to stop your win.
I think ajani gets played in at least winota but maybe also najeela. The 0 ability seems very strong in najeela since that's a deck that struggles with blockers
My experience with powerbalance.. First game, an opponent had powerbalance. Another opponent was going for the win with a Underworld Breach on the stack with a known force of will in hand. In response, I cast Endurance. Powerbalance trigger and it hit a Ranger Captain of Eos. Was just an awesome moment. The next 3 games where I have gotten it, it hasn't done much. But I haven't hit my top deck manipulation in those games. Still more to be tested!
Notably with Ashling: If you have an empty hand it just draws a card. It doesn't say "If you did, draw a card". Could be relevant for that specific reason.
For Ral, it may not be better than krak/shaka BUT it can lead its own deck fairly well too. If you can get up to 6 casts with 3 of those being instants(more is better for flip odds), you cast your sorceries first, then do the instants while holding priority to guarantee the 8 loyalty on flip. If you can ult while displacer kitten is in play, you're winning on the spot 99% of the time.
cthonian nightmare dockside loop can also reanimate and get etb effects with any creature in the graveyard because infinite energy allows any creature to be reanimated
I think the fact that most of the cards in this set are best for 2/mono colored decks is really really good, because the 4/5 color decks don't need anything to be better, they are already the best. And the flares are all great, I wanna play with them in all of my decks
I mean, if you exile Sheoldred with the 1 mana enchantment, having it come back during your precombat main phase instead of upkeep means you save 2 life when you draw and I see on the channel often that makes a big difference sometimes
Ral is going straight into my Zndrsplt/Okaun cEDH build. The backside is meh, but being able to flip whenever you cast something on your turn just means extra potential draw from Zndr. Plus reducing costs is helpful, of course.
I think the precombat main thing is because people usually go untap -> draw -> oh shit I forgot an upkeep trigger (sagas and attractions try to prevent this in the same way)
Chthonian Nightmare + Dockside loops does have infinite casts, which means you can’t really just win through a Rhystic Study without making enough extra treasures, so in that regard it’s worse than the Emiel loop
Was rewashing Cthonian nightmare breaks parity if you have a drain effect on board. Dockside + 3cmc or less creature in grave + blood artist/zulaport effect. Dockside only needs to be x =2
With Chthonian Nightmare, isnt the sacrifice a part of the activation cost to put the ability on the stack? As in, you dont need another creature in the graveyard to loop it with Dockside, because Dockside will already be in the graveyard because you sacrificed it? Or am i getting this way wrong?
You select targets before costs are paid (this is true of both spells and abilities), so you wouldn't be able to target a creature you're sacrificing to pay the cost. (See CR 602.2, if you want an official breakdown.)
1:05:00 Monk goes infinite with Dockside and Twinflame the same way ewit does. That's a monored combo, which is, while expensive, kinda interesting, especially because you probably already play Twinflame (for dualcaster) and Dockside in monored.
The reason static prison triggers during precombat main (they should have just called it main phase 1 and 2) instead of upkeep is so that energy generation that happens during upkeep can have a chance to take effect before having to pay this energy cost.
I’m a mono red player/fanatic and my advice to wizards to help out the lower colored decks is to increase the colored mana pips for the cards. For example a 5 red mana pip commander that is extremely strong for mono red. A little of the extreme side but just ask example.
I think the most powerful thing about these cards that are both a land and a creature is the ability to tutor then with land tutors to hand I think there will be some weird interaction like that that will break them. I'm wating on something like that
Very nice Flare of Duplication interaction: Use Orcish Lumberjack to sac a land (4 green mana) cast Invasion of Ikoria x=2, sac the lumberjack for FoD, copy gets Dockside, original gets magda, sac treasures for Citadel. You can do that turn 2
You don’t run tales end, you run trickbind. Literally the best counter ability. For the nightmare card you don’t need a creature in the graveyard. You sack dockside as part of the cost so it hits the GY, ability on the stack targeting dockside
Wrath of the Skies becomes incredible in a deck where you have energy lying around, in which case you just pay X = 0 put still pay a few energy and get the effect on just 2 mana. If an energy deck with white ever becomes viable that card will skyrocket in quality.
btw: did you consider pinnacle monk together with ghostly flicker? if you have infinite blue mana, you can ghostly flicker the land get it back as pinnacle monk and then start looping the pinnacle monk?
About Flare of fortitude: how do you see it in a Lotho deck, casting Ad nauseam, then Flare in response (sacrificing Lotho and generating a treasure), to have a free Ad naus?
Powerbalance I think *could* see play in a deck like Etali, being able to occasionally have an idea what's on top during your turn before casting etali even if it doesnt hit (Like you do something causing an opponent to have to do something, like playing something that would make etali uncounterable after such as veil) + a good portion of the time hitting a nice ramp for free is really good in that deck, and etali is playing a significant amount of subpar cards where this could pretty decently be swapped into. Like probably what most of the time your top is going to be a 0-1 mana piece of ramp of some kind, and if powerbalance nets you 1 permanent piece of mana it's already as good as arcane signet or fellwar stone. I feel like 50% of the time powerbalance will net you 1 mana by your next turn, and something like 10% it's going to be an extremely annoying or dangerous card, like a pyroblast that all your opponents have to go "Well fuck for the entire turn cycle etali has a free counterspell if any of us want to counter something this turn cycle" because powerbalance isn't mandatory to immediately cast, or power cards that are dangerous to let etali get for free like worldly tutor, gamble, or dockside. Maybe rite of flame gets cut, if it nets 1 mana it's straight up better than what rite of flame does as temporary mana and has a lot more upside a lot of the time. Also in a deck like say Kess, it seems pretty good, being able to see a 3 drop hit, and force powerbalance to hit a wheel in that deck off a top deck tutor really helps that deck, especially when you kinda topdeck tutor for wheels even in advance in that deck. I feel like it probably seeing play in Etali and Kess alone is likely enough to push it closer to 2.2 considering kess is a decent deck, and etali is a pretty good deck. There are likely other decks that are willing to go for that type of effect too that im not thinking of.
Necrodominance is detrimental being a replacement effect while necropotence still gives you a chance to interact with cards as they are placed into GY (such as in Gitrog strategies), that said it's really good if you don't rely on gy at all and can storm off at instant speed (would absolutely play in my Tevesh Rog).
Nothing will beat valakut awakening as the red mdfc for me (I understand bowmasters is a thing) but its just so good at filtering your hand. Conceptually tho, color pie wise, it feels like if blue is the best at raw card draw, white and black should be second with some restrictions, and red and green should be more random. Red's impulse draw way is perfect (temporary and worth the risk), green plays off the top (topdeck up to fate). Black pays life, but it feels like they should've had the anticipate style from the beginning (like a mini tutor), and (to bring it to my first point), white should have had the valakut awakening shuffle style draw. I like the "you and I draw" as a secondary, but a white cathartic reunion that shuffled cards away instead of discarding feels fair at this point, especially since the gy is a huge resource now.
I think you got Ashling wrong about her power level as a commander Is at minimum on the same level as Magda: - can win instant speed - havent on board signals (like the number of tresures etc) - have a huge card selection - removes many cedh creatures if needed (not always its good to wrath) - its a high interactive deck running over 10 copy spell + red interaction. This makes any counter war a nightmare because the deck can support any response to a win attempt, or respond and win of top of it after In the 99 its hard to play imho because you need a proper deck for her
I think Hydroelectic Specimen you're wrong on, I think it's a 3 atleast, Sink a 4-5. It and Sink into Stupor MUCH better than the other colored ones and are auto include in 2 color imo. It doesn't really matter what the text says, a land that can pitch for FOW, FON and Chrome Mox I think is just really good. 3 mana decks, it's gets kind of difficult, but I instantly put both into my Izzet Stella Lee and in every 2 color blue deck I will immediately include it for sure.
Power Balance + Sensai's Divining Top someone casts a 1 mana spell you can loop it to into a draw engine, also using top to look at top 3 cards and get free spells with regards to 3/4 of CEDH being 0 to 3 in casting cost...
The creature for Cthonian Nightmare needs to cost 4 or less But That's if dockside is in the grave Bc if the dockside is in hand/on the bf, you cast CN, get 3E, and can't reanimate you 4cmc creature (in the first rotation, you can't kickstart the loop) Otherwise dockside+4cmc is net neutral E-wise Also, if you have a 3cmc creature you can loop for infinite energy and then start looping creatures with any cmc I would say Emiel is less restrictive in play (works with dockside making 4+ rather than 5+, is easier to tutor, doesn't need extra creature), but needs slightly more initial mana investment, can't reanimate stuff and is restricted to WG
Ashling goes infinite with a microwave: Easy infinite magecraft triggers with 2 copy spells or 1 fury storm. With the two shuffle titans you can win on the stack immediately by generating infinite mana with instant speed rituals like seething song and win with any instant speed damage spell like lightning bolt. Those cards just need to be in the deck, its pretty much a 1/2 card combo with the commander out!
Also I think they changed the upkeep triggers to precombat main phase so the abuse of upkeep triggers doesn't go bananas. Especially with the commander that gives you more upkeeps, but I can't remember it's colors currently.
I'm with Cam on the Prison. Sorcery locked removal is always butts. The only effect like this that's even been playable in cEDH is Touch the Spirit Realm and that's only playble because of channel. Sure it may be the most efficient version we've ever seen, it's still bad.
Tyler needs to be on more.
The three personality dynamic takes the channel from great to outstanding.
Couldn’t agree more
Yeah, I like his perspective too!
I like how they are happy and he is grumpy
The kinnan player not mentioning how consign to memory only hits one ring while he prays we don't remember Basalt monolith is colorless
I come to watch magic, I stay to see cam get confused and disoriented
And mispronouncing cards don’t forget that!!

Harbinger also makes Carpet of Flowers nuts lol
Harbinger in Hakbal stax is so good. I love it ^^ I am the only one who plays that deck though ahahah
Reading Carpet
Damn true that. Never thought of that
@@mirkomigliavacca9894I love Hakbal. The minute I saw harbinger spoiled I knew I’d want it for the deck.
Worth noting that mayhem devil still triggers when stuff is exiled cause it triggers on sacrifice which doesn't care where the card goes after.
Having played with Ashling for quite awhile in Krark Saka, this card is BERSERK. An absolutely deranged piece of cardboard. Twin-Turbo Ashling is 🔥
Flare cycle is also a one-time instant speed sac outlet, which doesn't entirely make it better, but is something to keep in mind
I think that only might matter for white because of the rectors
Wow glad Cam saw me here, I was getting nervous they would just sit in silence unless I said something.
The black tutor creature seems good with saw in half, it can fetch up both thoracle and consult or any other A+B without having to pass the turn.
Also, pinnacle monk is huge with the kitten package that the deck has been playing as long as you're generating enough mana from your spells.
I run a casual Krark deck, how many of these cards are worth running? I also don't have kitten because I don't have a lot of rocks/tap abilities, should I?
Thanks, King. I'm in love with this card now.
Sincerely,
A Devoted Krark-follower (Krark/Thrasios)

Good scenario for powerbalance is casting a vamp tutor in response to a Kraum, putting Ad Nauseam on top, and casting it for free off the balance.
You put witch enchanter in sythis so then when they remove one of them, you ask "which enchanter? That one"
The perfect comment
Sythis will probably like Static Prison too.
Which enchanter? Dis enchanter....
@shayneweyker I might test it. It's cute fs
The kinnan player forgetting to mention consign to memory counters basalt is pretty funny
talking about artifact combos with Tyler on the podcast and no mentions Basalt Monolith...
White Flare is kinda good in Rocco and other Rector decks as a free sac for Rector that protects your board, gonna try it out
I love all 4 of you giving opinions together. Cam, Dylan, Tyler, and the Dog.

Did not expect the take on the red flare
Necrodominance is detrimental being a replacement effect while necropotence still gives you a chance to interact with cards as they are placed into GY (such as in Gitrog strategies), that said it's really good if you don't rely on gy at all and can storm off at instant speed (would absolutely play in my Tevesh Rog).
card has already been poping off at the scg las vegas 8k cedh, multiple decks
@@Rizso1 as i said definitely not bad, just hinders some strats so not an autoinclude if you play Necropotence
Woah, Bojuka Bog in Crop Rotation decks is insane. Uncounterable instant speed.
The reason why Static Prison says precombat main phase is so that if it hits a saga, the saga doesnt trigger on ETB AND on start of Main 1.
I think you got Ashling wrong about her power level as a commander
Is at minimum on the same level as Magda:
- can win instant speed
- havent on board signals (like the number of tresures etc)
- have a huge card selection
- removes many cedh creatures if needed (not always its good to wrath)
- its a high interactive deck running over 10 copy spell + red interaction. This makes any counter war a nightmare because the deck can support any response to a win attempt, or respond and win of top of it after
In the 99 its hard to play imho because you need a proper deck for her
I think Hydroelectic Specimen you're wrong on, I think it's a 3 atleast, Sink a 4-5.
Fun fact the blue blood moon wil also stay active under humility
Power Balance + Sensai's Divining Top someone casts a 1 mana spell you can loop it to into a draw engine, also using top to look at top 3 cards and get free spells with regards to 3/4 of CEDH being 0 to 3 in casting cost...
The creature for Cthonian Nightmare needs to cost 4 or less
But
That's if dockside is in the grave
Bc if the dockside is in hand/on the bf, you cast CN, get 3E, and can't reanimate you 4cmc creature (in the first rotation, you can't kickstart the loop)
Otherwise dockside+4cmc is net neutral E-wise
Also, if you have a 3cmc creature you can loop for infinite energy and then start looping creatures with any cmc
I would say Emiel is less restrictive in play (works with dockside making 4+ rather than 5+, is easier to tutor, doesn't need extra creature), but needs slightly more initial mana investment, can't reanimate stuff and is restricted to WG
Also you can loop dockside at 4 if you don't need infinite mana, like with ocb or smth
Best Tyler intro so far 😂
37:01 Hexproof stops targeting. If Stormdrake is targeting Tivit, Tivit's ward trigger isn't targeting Stormdrake. That's why the hexproof is irrelevant.
Ashling goes infinite with a microwave:
Easy infinite magecraft triggers with 2 copy spells or 1 fury storm.
Its grixis lol
Stealing Korvold is hilarious with the Drake. It is basically a sorcery speed removal with a can trip.
I play Flare of Malice on Yuriko. It’s pretty good because I get rid of 3 things which clears the way for me, one way or another.
I'm with Cam on the Prison. Sorcery locked removal is always butts. The only effect like this that's even been playable in cEDH is Touch the Spirit Realm and that's only playble because of channel. Sure it may be the most efficient version we've ever seen, it's still bad.
