One thing I am excited about from what you have explained and correct me if I am wrong but I will no longer have to micro adjust my 50mm 1.2 wide open to get it to hit perfect focus anymore like I have to with my Mark IV?
Seeing the reactions of the bridesmaids and wedding party when they saw the shots on the iPad was so much fun to see, I would be overwhelmed with joy at seeing such excitement for something I got to photograph, that is a wonderful idea. As a Sony convert from Canon, I'm back for the R5. It wasn't an easy decision but god do I love the image quality of Canon, without any of the fussing to get nice, warm skin tones. The feel of the camera and the RF lenses are the second reason. I'm keeping my Sony but I am loving my R5, and thank you for the super in-depth video!
@@VanessaJoy RAW and iPad. I'm bumbling amateur in comparison but the events I shoot (team and sports events for 11-16 year olds with all permissions!) the members want near instant, tweaked photos for TikTok, Snap, Insta shares etc. I use the Apple SD card reader to quickly import into phone or iPad and then can edit, as you are right it takes ages via WiFi link. I then share via a cloud, airdrop, Insta or whatever. They won't wait until 2 days later for you to edit at your leisure!! But I still get a sense of satisfaction when a fast lens and decent camera does show it captures tricky low light/action shots much better than a million iphones all taking the same shot.
About photographing things vs people with the R5 - you can still keep your AF in Servo with eye detection on, and then when you need to photograph some details just touch the screen where you want it to focus. It will lock on to that part of the object (at least most of the time), and so you can go back to looking through the viewfinder and keep composing and shooting that object as you wish! For me that's the easiest and the fastest workflow.
34:43 DNG converter for Mac has been available since the first week of August. I have edited about 3k RAW and cRAW images from my R5 and no issues. They are large files and the process requires a couple extra steps, but it works.
To be able to change focussing method instantly you can assign two different buttons both with different parameters for back button focus simultaneously. Then just focus with the appropriate button for the type of focus you need.
I program my 5D4 so that 1) the AF-On button to Servo AF, 2) the * button as One-Shot AF, 3) Half shutter press for AE lock. So that I can choose AF servo or Spot AF on the fly. Maybe you can try that, for shooting between human and object.
Vanessa Joy, This is one customisation that I always recommend. Give it a try and tell us about it later. And kudos for a good review. Always good to listen to pro who use the camera, rather than those youtube camera reviewer. They cloud our vision because they usually like controversial topic, many time they highlight some non issue because that is the way they attract click and view. They don’t rely on the camera for their job. They rely on cameras having hit feature, controversial flaws, regardless if those feature or flaws matter to the job. Thanks for the great review.
@@VanessaJoy I believe the R5 may be able to have one button be AF-ON...and another be EYE-AF ON. So for details one button. For people another button.
I really appreciate this video, thank you! I went from the *5D Mk4* to the *EOS R* and now the *EOS R5* and I *LOVE IT* a ton! Nice to have dual card slots back again and the focus is *amazing* even compared to the EOS R (which was already really good). Focus is so good I feel like it's cheating. Shooting a wedding with both the EOS R and the EOS R5 was very interesting, but I prefer to have matching bodies when I shoot so.... I now have two EOS R5 bodies and I'm never going back to DSLR, it's mirrorless all the way for me now! Had to get the battery grips and tons of batteries because the R5 does go through them faster. The new batteries have been back-ordered until a couple days ago so I had to use the older style (LP-E6N) batteries and the new (LP-E6NH) batteries are definitely better. My battery order finally shipped so I'll have all LP-E6NH batteries in both EOS R5 bodies for tomorrow's wedding! I have had the *temperature warning* show up shooting just photos (no video at all) on three out of the last five weddings I've shot with the EOS R5. It was the WHITE temperature icon not the RED temperature icon so I didn't worry about it too much (unless it turns red). No errors yet with the EOS R5 but I did have the EOS R lock up on me a couple times at a wedding and I just pulled the battery, put it back in and kept going. The CFexpress cards are expensive so I'm using 128GB ProGrade Digital CFexpress cards for now and may get larger cards in the future. Coming from the EOS R I kept the touch-drag screen focus method but I immediately enabled the joystick so I can do both. 23:46 - Less than 45MP - You mention shooting with compressed raw but I thought that only makes the *file size* smaller, the image is still 45MP. So I had to pause the video to test it for sure. I shot the exact same image in raw and C-raw and they're both 45MP. It seems Canon got rid of the smaller raw options that were there in the 5D Mk4 starting with the EOS R. The 5D Mk4 gives you *three* sizes for raw (30MP, 17MP, and 7.5MP) but the EOS R and EOS R5 only give you the option of compressing the raw files so the file size is smaller, but it's still a full-resolution raw. 28:14 - I use the lens adapter and it's *awesome* because my "old" EF lenses work perfectly on it. I have the *control-ring* version of the adapter so my EF lenses will have the same 'control-ring' functionality as the RF lenses. So far I only have one RF lens (35mm macro) but next year I'll start adding more. 37:52 - I jumped from the EOS R to the R5 and it was worth it for me because I wanted dual card slots. But the other features of the R5 were totally worth it as well, especially the autofocus and 5D Mk4-like features. I've been keeping notes on my experiences as I moved from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5 and I'm actually going to start a UA-cam channel just to talk about the transition and setup/configuration preferences. Not nearly as polished as this video but I gotta start somewhere. Thanks again for doing this video! I also say ISO the same way I would say ASA, and say EOS like I say BIOS.
Great video. Thanks for the info on the Exposure Simulation. I thought mine was beginning to be faulty but now I know the reason as I always use a strobe
Thank you for answering the upgrade question about the R. You answered everything I wanted to know. I'm heavily vested in the R system, and I've barely had the R for two years. I haven't had any issues with it shooting weddings.
I'm not a pro shooter but did do my nieces wedding using my R. I didn't have any issues either and for Landscape photos, the R was great. Now I have the R5 and experienced what the eye AF and higher FPS are like, I think the results would be even better, plus it makes life so much easier, with more flexible options around exposure and composition. I suppose the main factor is cost as it's not cheap.
I am using an RP for weddings/events and it works great. I think people get really overwhelmed by tec this days and somehow think they always need the latest stuff to be professional enough. If you consider what we have today, cameras like an RP would have been unaffordable ultra professional cameras only a few years ago and are now just considered „entry level“. In the end, nope can actually tell a difference what you used for shooting (with maybe the exception of an R5 because of the pixel amount, but don’t forget that also means raw files are so big you will be crying once you import them to your PC after an event ^^)
@@Seitenwerk Totally agree with you as both the R & RP are great cameras and still have there place and can be effective if the user is willing to work with them to get the best results, as clearly you are. For me, it made sense to upgrade & I'm fortunate to be able to do so. Not everyone is so fortunate, or actually needs to to. I'm a big believer in 'if it aint broke dont fix it' philosophy so if your happy with the RP and get the results you want, it makes perfect sense to keep using it.
Yea, but does the R5 REALLY make your life easier? I would tend to think not. The R made my life easier as my previous camera was a 5D Mark II. Intend to keep my bodies 5 plus years before upgrading. Where the R helped me over the 5DII was my technology got old, and it was time. I had my work around for certain situations, but I made it work all the same. It became my backup when I got the R. I opted to get a discounted RP as my second body, and I’m loving it. I’ll get a R5 Mark II or something down the line probably.
From your comments, it seems that the R & RP work for you and give you everything you need so your right, upgrading doesn't make sense at this point. However for me, although you don't think the R5 makes my life easier, I can categorically say it does, as although the R was great for stationary or very slow moving subjects, it certainly has problems with anything moving fast due to the EVF LAG / blackout and pretty low FPS when the AF servo is active. The R5's eye AF, 12/20FPS and higher EVF refresh rate solves all of these issues for me. As I said, it's not for everyone as it isn't cheap but I'm fortunate to be able to afford it.
@@gowithgoldstraw Hehe true... Photographers seem to believe that the hybrid/video crowd should just look past the Canon generated video hype that doesn't deliver what it promised in a real world usable format...

@@gowithgoldstraw I feel that video Cameras are becoming so advanced they should consider makeing vid and photo separate again... Will never happen now . Enjoyed your video on the R5. I appreciate working professionals taking time out of their busy schedules to inform and help others. Looking forward to checking out your other content. Thanks again.
Beautiful work!! Always have awesome content!! I have switched back to Canon and been using my 5D Mark IV. So, i am moving over slowly to Canon R5 and RF lenses. Excited and love the ergonomics, the skin colors, performance, etc. Tried the R5 loved it!
Thank you Vanessa for the REAL WORLD reviews. Canon can thank you! I just purchased an R5 From Cardinal Camera - Charlotte NC and it arrives tomorrow! 10/28. Very excited. Watching your video's over and over. Keep up the incredible work. WE all need you!
I preordered 6 minutes into the announcement but got spooked by the over heating issue and cancelled. Win some lose some, now I have to wait to mine probably for months 😢
Awesome review, thanks! You answered all the really important questions! Fun twist with the mirrored video, but that didn’t deter from the overall great video!
Appreciate the lengthy video! I have to add my experience on the overheating since you touched on it and my experience has obviously been different than yours. I did a photo shoot with the R5 a few evening ago in South Florida. I shot approx 700 photos in 1.5 hours of a friend and her horses, switching between RF 50 12. and EF 35 1.4. I did not shoot any video whatsoever. For the last 20 minutes of the shoot, the overheat warning was on and showed 0 minutes remaining for any of the high end video modes. At that point, I would have not been able to shoot any 8K, 4KHQ, or slow motion. I would definitely call this an overheating problem. I had planned to shoot some 4K120 at the end of the shoot but was unable to. I love the camera, the image quality is fantastic, IBIS works great, but overall fairly disappointed because I'm a hybrid video/photos shooter. Hope Canon can do something about this with a firmware update.
my experience was different... when i shoot with mix application stills and video, the 4KHQ shows different record times each time i select the mode. it'll hard to plan for any video take unless i stick with FHD and standard 4K30. i also found that the 12 fps Mechanical Shutter is also limited to temperature... in order to use this, the temperature has be below 23 degC otherwise the MS fps drops to 9 fps or 6 fps... see manual p452. the R5 is too restrictive unless i stick to slow MS fps and normal video modes. i prefer stability and high level predictability, so use R5 with caution. test it out, plan before doing any paid or important work.
I cant see how firmware can resolve a thermal hardware issue! unless they change the tolerance, but then that would make the camera susceptible to circuitry overheating and damage.

Saw your review rather by accident and a good job you most certainly did. I used Canon for years (5D's up to the mk3) but because Canon was always lousy with noise and dynamic range I eventually got so fed up that I sold the lot and went to Fujifilm. Now at last Canon is clearly making a proper camera!! This is the camera I yearned for for years! Do enjoy it!
Finding this at least a few years late, and just want to say thank you for passing on your knowledge! This video helped me pull the trigger to get my own.... arriving soon. :)
Free advice from a Sony shooter who's been using mirrorless for several years. Most cameras should give you the option to adjust the focus and brightness of the electronic viewfinder. Before you go on a photo shoot adjusted to your comfort level.
This was a fantastic video. It’s so nice to hear a working photographer talk about their experience in the field. This definitely influenced my decision to purchase this camera. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Some will get hung up on your Ambassador status, I simply don’t care. You took your time, you were not trying to sell anything and you brought this out from a photographers prospective. You answered the questions and you were honest about not being a videographer. I know you mentioned this before in another video that your husband is. The low light performance is a game changer. The images were amazing, you are extremely professional as always and funny when you want to be (Jared Polin) video and heck if you did Canon proud by doing what you normally do, they are all the better for it. Your experience, more than qualifies you as a reviewer for this and the R6 based on your working knowledge alone and actual experience with the product. You did great. You never gave anyone the impression that you were getting rid of your 1DX mark III and you were honest that you are a Canon shooter only and you didn’t trash other brands. We need more of this type of style reviewing, more photos shown and less of trying to sell a product, but if people are influenced to buy, that’s between them and their wallets. I can’t wait to get out of this new normal and get back to shooting regularly. Here are my questions for you, is the low light performance similar with the R6 and how was it on a 10 hour day with that mask on or at least for part of the day, especially with the heat, I believe you said it was 100 degrees?
This is so thoughtful. Thank you so much!! Haha the mask wasn't fun but it was an outdoor wedding so I was able to take quite a few breaks from it when I was far away from people. :-) Low light performance is similar to the R6, but I feel like I enjoyed the way the R5 handled it more.
Vanessa...you are a miracle worker. Exceptional video. Thank you so much for this video because any doubts I had are gone and now I'm going to get a second job to get the R5. Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this very informative video Vanessa. I have my first wedding shoot with the R5 Friday, July 12, and watching this video upped my confidence level a lot coming from the EOS R. 💜
Very awesome review! Refreshing to have one about real still usage and not resort to a brand war, spec readout for 1/2 the review, or a photo review that covers video for 2/3 and briefly mentions stills. The Q&A at end was great too.
Dear Vanessa! a little tip! you can configure one of the buttons behind the camera to be able to change the type of focus immediately! I use face detection and when I need to make a photo of decorations or flowers I adjust the focus with the manual focus ring and adjust that little bit we need for the perfect photo! you can set the focus ring whenever you move it changes to manual! excellent video! success!!!
A super, informative video, and fun the watch, too. Thank you!!! Note that C-RAW still shoots in full 45 MB resolution, but simply compresses the data. I saw a couple of videos by pro photogs who said they were unable to see any difference, so confidentally shoot only in C-RAW - not only less space, but quicker shooting and processing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! For your real world evaluation of this incredible camera. I consider myself a borderline professional photographer, more sports photography than portraits. And I am a loyal Canon camera user. But I am ready for an upgrade as well as expanding what I want to shot, portraits and wedding. The first spec I always look for when researching cameras is the FPS, then the file size. So, when the rumors for the R5 started, I figured this may be my next upgrade. After watching your review and getting your real world first hand experience with it, especially a 10 hour wedding shoot, I am sold! This will be my next upgrade! Thank you for your time and effort in making this video and your honest working opinion on the R5, as well as some tips when shooting an all day wedding event. I can't wait to get my hands on one to use, especially for my sports photography.
Excellent stuff. This really is the best overall camera today and these real world use videos show it. Its basically the combination of the best 3 "segmented" FF cameras on the market today rolled into one with some extras like incredible IBIS and warm skin tones sprinkled on top.
The R6. Lower megapixels = better low light. That's why the Sony A7s III can shoot in almost pitch black with it's 12mp sensor. The R5 is still very good at higher ISO, but if you want a better low light camera (high ISO and low light aren't the same thing) then the R6 is the better choice. Although I don't think most would be disappointed with the R5 in most situations.
FINALLY! Somebody give an award to Vanessa! So many video talk out there while most wedding photographers just sit patiently and wondering who will bring the light to the darkness...:) Thanks Vanessa, will definitely buy these for my next year Destination Weddings.

Ps. The dng converter is available for Mac as well! It was at a slightly different link and page to the windows one! I’m on Mac and have been converting R5 Raws to DNG
Robert Fousch yes really happy about it! been so happy with how the Raws handle!!! I sense a disturbance in the force though, many DNGs have been destroyed over the last 24 hours 🥺
Set it to initial focus point under AF menu 5. Click on the top option, then in the next menu select “initial AF pt for (face) (box symbol). If you select this option the camera still does eye and face detect, you just have to push the shutter button halfway down. Also make sure to enable the joy stick and dials.
Battery life - you can check your batteries charge in camera with single battery or both if using a grip. Look in the yellow wrench menu screen 5 under "Battery Info" It gives a percentage of remaining battery life in 1% increments, images shot and recharge performance on each battery. You can shut off continuous focus and it will save a lot of battery life.
Excellent review. As a published pinup and cosplay photographer, and some one who has owned Canon and Nikon film, Canon 40D, 50D, 60D, 5Dmk3, 7D, 1Dx, and 5DS...this R5 is the camera I will be using for a long time to come. Just have to wait for it to arrive.
thanks Vanessa for this really informative review and Q&A about photography!! Keep it up! ;-) I have one question: Does the camera have spot metering for setting the exposure to the area where the autofocus actually finds the face or eye? I am aware that the EVF is great to gauge exposure and that helps but since the AF finds the area of interest so reliably it would make sense that the exposure could be coupled to the focus point. Is that the case and how do you expose quickly in order to keep up with the super fast AF?
@@dbc97610 , damn, now that would be a shame if it didn't have that, what good is the superfast AF if it doesn't meter correctly?! Vanessa shows the available light photos of the crowd dancing in disco light. the exposure can switch multiple stops in the fraction of a second JUST like the AF to be accurate on a face, how on earth will you take reliable photos of that then?!
@@dbc97610 really? bummer. Now why would that not be included? The 1DX3 can't do it while shooting with view-finder since the AF is not intelligent then and the R5 has the smarter and faster AF through the EVF because it's mirrorless yet it has the worse metering.... how would that make sense? randfee has a point, having to keep resetting the exposure manually while having a super fast AF is gonna be frustrating. This would be so easy for the camera electronics to do, it wouldn't take much computing power... hm... :-/
what I found on canon-europe.com regarding metering: www.canon-europe.com/cameras/eos-r5/specifications/ ================== (1) Evaluative metering (linked to All AF points) (2) Partial metering (approx. 6.1% of viewfinder at centre) (3) Spot metering: Centre spot metering (approx. 3.1% viewfinder at centre) AF point-linked spot metering not provided (4) Centre weighted average metering ================== Does anyone know how the #1 evaluative metering performs and where the difference to #3 (spot metering) is... I suppose the area is larger for #1 - just how large? what a shame, why is #3 not provided, ridiculous since the 1DX3 can't even take advantage of it without live-view.
Awesome Video Vanessa this is what a lot of us have been looking for with the main focus being on the Stills side as many of us have none to little interest in the video side of it
And that’s why I, and many others, say ISO. It’s nice to know a “correct” wait to say something according to the dictionary, but the dictionary doesn’t include cultural context and if you know anything about languages you know that cultural context is everything
ASA - that's for film cameras. I owned the 1980s Canon F-1N and Canon A-1 Film camera. I used to buy a specialized 35mm film that allowed me to change the ASA from 100 to up to 800 on the same roll. Back then shot mostly Black and White Film for a company magazine I was working for. The film would be sent to that lab that sold me that type of film. I'm only shooting Canon EOS 6D now. Glad I can still use my Canon L-lenses with R-lens adapter. But very interested in the Canon R6 now. Animal eye-tracking for birding, and who knows maybe clearer bees/butterflies/hummingbirds. I believe I'm going to get more perfect shots. My wife shoots mostly videos. She may like her own R5.
Great video and I have r5 on order (mostly for birds with bird eye af). Re focusing on details - Sony has had an arguably better af idea for years on their a7/a9 series. You are in servo mode but can get any focus area plus face/af at same time. For example, you can have one point af set plus face detection. If face is anywhere in the entire photo it will focus on the face. If there is no face in the photo, it will default to one point af or whatever af area you picked. The face does not have to be inside the af area. This is the best of both worlds and Sony and Olympus had it for years. Canon, Nikon and Panasonic stubbornly only allow face detect in full area mode only.
Thank you for a real hands on review. I’m waiting for my back ordered R5 to arrive and can’t wait to start using it. You are both a great photographer and communicator.
R6, easy. The R5 is too expensive for a photo-only camera. For the price of JUST the R5 body you can get the R6 with a very good lens, and not feel like you wasted several hundred dollars on features you wont use much (8k, 4k 120 fps). If you want dual card slots for your photos the R6 is better too. The R5 requires that one of the slots be a still-very-expensive) Cfexpress card. And don't forget, bodies change often. Anything that one body can do at launch pretty much gets matched by other camera bodies within a year or two, and for cheaper. Bodies last years, a quality lens can last you decades even. The R6 has the same ibis, auto-focus, and shutter speeds as the R5, which are pretty awesome. Honestly those are (or should be) the biggest selling points of the R5, and the R6 has them. The 20mp sensor is more than enough for online photos and good sized prints. The only reason you'd want the 45mp of the R5 is if you're doing very large prints that have a lot of detail that people would be expected to look at closely. And even then, only the most hardcore of pixel-peepers would even care if the image was taken with a 45mp sensor or a 20mp one. 99% of people who view your photos won't care. Plus the 20mp sensor on the R6 means it has less noise at higher iso so better for low light (although the R5 is still very good in low light). If the R5 had a photo-dedicated variant that dropped the higher video specs and came in at a lower price it would still be a close call between it and the R6. To put it simply, if you don't know which to get then you don't need the R5. It's more of a camera for people who can benefit specifically from what it offers. Bang for your buck, the R6 is the much better choice.
Talking about battery, have they removed the Battery status in the menu? Vanessa talks about 2/3 battery left, and how many shots; “I didn’t count them” but in the every camera since the 5d3 ( I think) you can see percentage and number of shots taken in the menu, is that still there?
@@nessviggo obvious you shoot photos for hobby. If you are working with a camera, you don't really look at the battery. When it's empty, you change it.
D Tibor I know, but since I get around the CIPA rated number of shots with the R, my concern is that I expected to get that with the R5 also, which is rated only at 220 shots. So I’m looking for any “evidence” where I can find both number of shots and battery capacity. Luckily there is a percentage and this info right in camera, so when people test I’ll try to find more and more data points for factual battery life, not just CIPA rated.
Hands down after watching your review it absolutely sold me that this is my camera for diving. This is now the best camera on the market for diving period now. Your review the way you did it this time around should be your format. You are a wedding photographer and I am a underwater photographer. The way you explained everything with this camera. I was able to take the information you shared and apply it to my form of photography. I have to say that with the FPS and 45MP the R5 has the only thing the 1D MK III has over it now is maybe weather sealing. But this is the information we need and in a format we need to receive it. I can't wait to get the housing from nauticam for the R5.
Most useful R5 review I have seen so far. Thanks for the effort Vanessa. By the way, for potential readers of my comment, others have tested third party lenses with this adapter, it works perfectly.

Haha that’s sort of a fun conversation. Did you know some people prefer to read/glance to reading with their left eye and some with their right? I guess you can tell which we both prefer!
Tremendous video, it's so much more useful to know how a camera performs in real life, working situations. You have convinced me that I made the correct choice in ordering the R5 over other options. Your positive experience has made waiting for the arrival of my camera a little more difficult. No doubt these are difficult times for wedding photogs so I'll take this opportunity to wish you good health and much success.
Thanks Vanessa. Really appreciate your opinions & the results you are getting for pictures & results with video. I really needed to hear someones experience & see there results. I actually have that feeling often. I feel like my images should be sharper than they are. Especially since I'm on a tripod most of the time. From a 5dMk3 to an EOS R for the last year and a half. I'm glad to hear that.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING. the working photographer q&a were some of my questions. I do have one additional question. Which lens or lenses are RF and why did you pick those over the EF version?
Thanks for your thoughts! I had the same stumbling block with switching focus modes at first for different subjects, but what I’ve found to be useful is keeping servo on all the time and using the AF-ON back button for eye-AF and the star button for single-point. This is also useful if eye-AF is ever struggling because sometimes using the single point to get focus near where you want it and then switching to eye-AF can be faster (at least with eye-AF on wildlife).
In response to the question about using the R5 with adapter & off brand lenses -- It works fantastic! I use the Tamron 70-200 G2 & Tamron 150-600 G2 and they both work great with the R5. I'm actually renting an RF 70-200 this weekend for a shoot just to try it. This will be the first time I'm putting RF glass on my R5. I'm hoping it's not better than the Tamron because I don't want to put my first born in escrow!!!

What about programming the button on the front of the camera (near the lens mount) to toggle to manual one point focus?
34:43 DNG converter for Mac has been available since the first week of August. I have edited about 3k RAW and cRAW images from my R5 and no issues. They are large files and the process requires a couple extra steps, but it works.
To be able to change focussing method instantly you can assign two different buttons both with different parameters for back button focus simultaneously. Then just focus with the appropriate button for the type of focus you need.
Vanessa, thanks because you share real life professional problem and solution.... this is priceless. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!
I program my 5D4 so that
1) the AF-On button to Servo AF,
2) the * button as One-Shot AF,
3) Half shutter press for AE lock.
So that I can choose AF servo or Spot AF on the fly. Maybe you can try that, for shooting between human and object.
Ohhhh you are a genius. I have to admit I almost never customize my camera buttons. Crazy right?
Vanessa Joy,
This is one customisation that I always recommend.
Thanks for the great review.
esphi LEE my pleasure 😇 thanks for the tip!
@@VanessaJoy I believe the R5 may be able to have one button be AF-ON...and another be EYE-AF ON. So for details one button. For people another button.
Omar Gonzalez Photography definitely going to look into this more
at last, someone who's a real-world user reviews it.
Thanks 😊
I also say ISO the same way I would say ASA, and say EOS like I say BIOS.
usually 2nd batch camera will have less to no problem , that's what i did with my 5dm4
@@stephen7627 - I read there's a firmware update coming soon for the R5.
@@JaredRibic yes i heard that 2 , but usually 2nd batch camera they mostly fix hardware issues as well ( hopefully )
I work in electronics and the worst is to buy the first batches, and the best is to buy 6-12 months after release.
Thank you so much for this perfect video. My R5 arrives this week and this was a big help to me to prep for it
Have fun!
Hey. Set up one of the other back buttons for single point AF and you have both focus systems available
Thank you for your exceptional review. I really like all your wedding shots!
Thx!!!
Great video. Thanks for the info on the Exposure Simulation. I thought mine was beginning to be faulty but now I know the reason as I always use a strobe
*facepalm
Thank you for this review Vanessa!
You are so welcome!
You made me want to buy it. I have an appointment tomorrow to pick it up at my shop. Thank you !

Hi Vanessa, great informative video as always. Thanks
You are so welcome!
Receiving my R5 soon! What camera settings do you use? Maybe a video?
Thank you for this! I was really searching a wedding-side review!
Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Awesome review, thanks! You answered all the really important questions! Fun twist with the mirrored video, but that didn’t deter from the overall great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Vanessa very informative, any chance you will be reviewing the R6?
@@eliaspap8708 This article gives hope for a firmware fix: www.eoshd.com/8k/removing-internal-battery-resets-eos-r5-overheat-timer-are-canons-pants-now-completely-down
I think it all depends on the surrounding temperature; you need to move to a colder climate then you won’t have any overheating issues.

All very professionally explainded.

oh very true...it's always working :-)
Excellent review, Ms. Vanessa, are there any plans on you reviewing the R6 ? I'm curious as to how that camera holds up.
Thank you for the real-world experiences with both the R5 and R6. Very helpful.
Thank you so much. This was so informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Canon is back!
I have watched a lot of videos about the R5 (and I have one now), and this is THE best video I have seen for the R5!
So happy to hear that!!
Yay happy to hear it and good luck!

Just I will have to purchase a R5 to see that selection. Thanks
Thanks for sharing all your insights for this camera....I wish I could easily switch to Canon.. :)
awwww what do you shoot with right now?
Very awesome review! Refreshing to have one about real still usage and not resort to a brand war, spec readout for 1/2 the review, or a photo review that covers video for 2/3 and briefly mentions stills. The Q&A at end was great too.
Dear Vanessa! a little tip! you can configure one of the buttons behind the camera to be able to change the type of focus immediately! I use face detection and when I need to make a photo of decorations or flowers I adjust the focus with the manual focus ring and adjust that little bit we need for the perfect photo! you can set the focus ring whenever you move it changes to manual! excellent video! success!!!
I would love to know more about the camera>iphone>ipad workflow you used. are there any tutorials?
There will be ☺️
A super, informative video, and fun the watch, too. Thank you!!! Note that C-RAW still shoots in full 45 MB resolution, but simply compresses the data. I saw a couple of videos by pro photogs who said they were unable to see any difference, so confidentally shoot only in C-RAW - not only less space, but quicker shooting and processing.
It’s a hard sales pitch for the 1DXiii after having the R5. It’s absolutely fantastic!
Thanks for a great review from a real-life photographer's perspective.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent stuff. This really is the best overall camera today and these real world use videos show it. Its basically the combination of the best 3 "segmented" FF cameras on the market today rolled into one with some extras like incredible IBIS and warm skin tones sprinkled on top.
Which camera performs best in low light/high ISO, the R5 or R6?

Adobe has full support in Photoshop and Lightroom as of today 8/19.
What a detailed, helpful and thoughtful video! Thank you! Big fan of your work!
So happy, that I found your video. It really helped me a lot to decide if I should buy the R5 or not. Thank you for that!
Keep it up! ;-)
I have one question: Does the camera have spot metering for setting the exposure to the area where the autofocus actually finds the face or eye? I am aware that the EVF is great to gauge exposure and that helps but since the AF finds the area of interest so reliably it would make sense that the exposure could be coupled to the focus point. Is that the case and how do you expose quickly in order to keep up with the super fast AF?
No, the R5 doesn't spot meter on the focus point (at least not from any settings I've found). I'm hoping they'll add this in a firmware update!
This would be so easy for the camera electronics to do, it wouldn't take much computing power... hm... :-/
what I found on canon-europe.com regarding metering:
www.canon-europe.com/cameras/eos-r5/specifications/
==================
(1) Evaluative metering (linked to All AF points)
(2) Partial metering (approx. 6.1% of viewfinder at centre)
(3) Spot metering: Centre spot metering (approx. 3.1% viewfinder at centre) AF point-linked spot metering not provided
(4) Centre weighted average metering
==================
Does anyone know how the #1 evaluative metering performs and where the difference to #3 (spot metering) is... I suppose the area is larger for #1 - just how large?
what a shame, why is #3 not provided, ridiculous since the 1DX3 can't even take advantage of it without live-view.
Spot metering for what??? You have exposure simulation, you can judge by just looking at what you see.
Awesome Video Vanessa this is what a lot of us have been looking for with the main focus being on the Stills side as many of us have none to little interest in the video side of it
Glad I fit that need for you! Share it around :-)
Yes, I remember ASA. We even had it in Europe in the 1960s.
Perfect review! Absolutly love it! Thanks! 🙏🏻
For Photo enthusiast, would go with the R5 pra R6 as tou used both of them?
Excelent video btw.
Moved from DSLR 5D to R5 ... and LOVE IT... Not going to entertain R3 will save for R1 down the line.
Yayyyy

Talking about battery, have they removed the Battery status in the menu? Vanessa talks about 2/3 battery left, and how many shots; “I didn’t count them” but in the every camera since the 5d3 ( I think) you can see percentage and number of shots taken in the menu, is that still there?
If it’s there I’ve never used it. I’m just going by the battery icon on the top screen
Vanessa Joy , I found it in the R5 manual, page 789, it’s still there 👍🏽👍🏽 Wrench Menu no. 5.
Real world... love it. THANK YOU!
yayyyy!
Wonderful video! I really liked how you mentioned the wifi capability and having the guests look at the jpegs right away on the iPad. Pretty cool!
Most useful R5 review I have seen so far. Thanks for the effort Vanessa. By the way, for potential readers of my comment, others have tested third party lenses with this adapter, it works perfectly.
Glad to hear it!
Honestly you are excellent gear reviewer. You hook me watching your whole video in a natural and very informative way from your personal experience. Love watching whole video. You have that connection to the audience. PERFECT! One thing, hope your vertical video be place in left part, and infotext/ b roll on right part of the screen. Thanks
I currently have a 5D MK 111 which is a great camera. After your experiences with the R5 , i will getting a new R5 very soon. Thanks again for your honest review of a hands on shoot. Well Done.
I actually have that feeling often. I feel like my images should be sharper than they are. Especially since I'm on a tripod most of the time. From a 5dMk3 to an EOS R for the last year and a half. I'm glad to hear that.
Best review. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Great review and experience sharing..!! ❤
Thx for watching!
@@VanessaJoy its my pleasure and learning time..🙂
Nice video. I think you've convinced me to purchase the R5.
Haha 🤣 good to hear!
Hey keep it up 👍 🔥🔥
Thank you! The R5 is my first mirrorless camera and I appreciate the practical, real-world tips on how to get more out of the camera or just adjust to having a mirrorless camera from a DSLR.
