Quite informative. How do you decide the subject and softbox distance? You said that the softbox is small and so you keep it close to the subject but how close can we get?
As close as you’d like. The closer it is the softer the light, but the faster the fall off. It’s a fun inverse square law game :)
You might like my book, explains this pretty well in easy to understand terms.
The Off Camera Flash Handbook: amzn.to/30pPfu7
Keep your softbox just out of camera view by a foot or two, maybe three.
Academicly you put the softbox igual distance of dimension (120---> 120 from the subject)
This was a great tutorial with lots of excellent information. I photograph seniors and in the last two sessions realized how much I love the little bit of pop OCF brings to the photos. Thanks for the reminder that it doesn't have to be overly complicated to add the light. I'm impressed with your arm strength holding the heavy lenses and the reflector at the same time!
Haha I workout 🏋️♂️ 😉
@@VanessaJoy Those new Canon lenses are enormous! Lifting them is all the workout you need.
Thank you Vanessa, this lighting set up is just in time for me to practice. I'm so happy you do these videos, they are very helpful. Enjoy a great and wonderful day.
So happy you like!
I love the honesty and true photography craft: it's always better to get the picture in the camera, instead of retouchinging... Pleasure to watch!
Thanks so much for watching! I hope you stick around
Welp, looks like i have some NEW GOALS! Thank you so much for these tutorials/webinars.
Hope it helps!
Beautiful Model + Beautiful Lens + Amazing Photographer = PERFECTION!
Great JOB!!!
Thank you, Vanessa! So helpful! I loved watching how you used your reflector without an assistant and Julianna was a great help with demonstrating posing! 🥰
Glad u like!
I've been a dance photographer for about three decades and though I usually shoot in an entirely different environment, I admire your simple clear instruction. Well done.
Just purchased "The Off Camera Flash Handbook " and this tutorial , what a combo. Thank you V J.
A perfect pair!
Nice photo 👌 and tips
Hello
I love your tutorials, really clear and fantastic teaching style along with beautiful images
Learned a lot from you! Thanks.
By far the easiest to understand, thank you!
I've watched a couple of your videos, and I have to say, you're a very good teacher. You point out all the important things! This come from somebody who has been in the business for 40 years.
Aw thank you!
That was really enjoyable Vanessa, thank you. Lovely tips and something for everyone to try out 😃🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
I learned a lot from this, great to see you at work. The hows and whys of your choices ... Thank you.
Glad u like!
Thank you Vanessa.. I love how you explain the why.. it makes a world of difference.. be waiting for your next vid
So happy to hear this. Thanks for the kind words!
WOW how have I only just found your youtube channel !! absolutely THE best real life channel i've watched
great video Vanessa!
Thanks Vanessa. Loved this video; lots of good ideas! After years of doing the crossed arm thing with the reflector, I started attaching the reflector to a trekking pole (or light stand). I hold the pole with my left hand, but extend it to my right side, resting the pole on top of my right arm or shoulder; looks very silly, but more comfortable and better reflector control.
Whatever works right?!
Great tutorial 👌👌👌👌
Completely mesmerizing tutorial vanessa always love you.
Thank you so much! so happy u like :-)
Just got your book on off camera flash photography, delivered from the Usa to Belgium in one week ! Can't wait to read it !
So fun! Hope you like ☺️
I thought the first photo you took without the flash was really nice, then you showed the photos with the flash, and I was quite blown away at the added depth and beauty! So awesome!
Haha thanks ☺️
Fantastic tutorial and images. And Julianna's hair is amazing.
So much fun hair
Excellent... Bts and your shooting style...
Nice work. And always helps when you have a pretty model and a knowledgeable photographer.
Was glad to get the notification for this as I had just bought two B10's, the Octabox and Magnum Reflectors and have still to start using them once lockdown restrictions are lifted here in Scotland in the next week or two. Great timing! :)
perfect timing!
That sounds like a nice setup! I use godox for the models I shoot on my channel, curious to see those B10's in action.
Thanks for the video
Very nice, Beautiful Model, and Photographer, and very very nice Images.
Thank you so much 😀
Amazing
Thanks for this insightful demonstration, Vanessa you are a very nice, humble and real pro artistic photographer and Giuliana is by far the most discreet natural and sophisticated model I have ever seen.

Thank you so much!!
Very, very helpful, especially the first scenario (light with gels in the background). What can I say? Vanessa, you never let me down! 😍
Oh thank you!
Excellent video! She is gorgeous and those eyes!
She is!
Thank you for sharing ! Your info was very helpful ..
My pleasure 😇
Great tutorial video Vanessa, really enjoyed it thanks. You did real well holding the camera/lens combo with the reflector.
Thanks so much! 😊
The shot at 13:40 is nice because of the light that's on the ground behind her. I reminds me of the hot spot that's on a backdrop. It's cool.
Ah good point!
Thanks for sharing that was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Great lesson Vanessa! Thx for sharing a few secrets 🥂
Anytime 😊
Loved this!! Never really thought about backlighting outside! Your light is so soft and perfect!
Thank you so much!!

It’s amazing
Nice work
Nice lesson for senior portrait session
Yes! Perfect use for these techniques
I had to watch the video again to be able to concentrate. Very hard to keep focussed on the information with such a beautiful photographer moving around. Great job!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! Clear, succinct, pleasant, instructive and like all of your videos well-paced. Thanks Ms. Joy!
Thanks so much!
Great tips & explanations! While having a subject would be nice, it doesn't stop me from using what you've shown us here. My model on some occasions is a paper lantern on top of a light stand. It's an off-white color and the spherical shape that lets me see how the light from the flash will fall at different angles, distances and settings.
Thanks Vanessa another great tutorial.🙋♂️
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos! You are really good at teaching. )) Thank you so much Vanessa!
Glad you like them!

Great video as usual. Gorgeous all around too!
Thanks so much!
I love how you “build” your tutorials. - One step at a time. One setting at a time. One pose at a time. Then you show the differences. It’s learning at its best!
BTW.....
I think those leaves you so wonderful used may have been poison ivy climbing up that tree!
so happy you like! :-) haha and yes it was
I loved this video 😍 I'm not very comfortable to use off camera flash but after this I will try on my poppy field shoot ☺️
oooooo I wish I could shoot in a poppy field!!!
And not to push my book on you, but I 100% wrote it for photogs like you that aren't comfortable with flash. Might help :-) amzn.to/2RKpFxB
Once I used flash once, I couldnt stop using it for the photoshoots on my channel.
Yes love video
“And we’re all checking for ticks later” 🤣🤣 keeping it real
Jersey is pretty bad for ticks. 😳

@@VanessaJoy I've been good. Having fun on youtube being a content creator! Looks like you are having fun as well!
I
I'm a Sony fanboy with nothing but 2.8 options. I'd pay that price for a F2. I was nothing but Canon DSLRs, then Sony mirrorless for a few years, now Canon is looking beautiful again. The big dogs are clearly Sony and Canon.
I hope I also start finding Profoto stuff in the back of my closet.....good for you :)
Lol I just always have my favs and end up using the same thing over and over

Juliana is a great model and so easy to work with and shoot. Had a great time and captured some great images. Looking forward to your next video.

Hi Ms. J. Great video tutorial as usual for you. But moreover, I just enjoy your personality and the way you come across on camera. You could put down all the equipment and just chill with anybody. You are a great person and I love your personality. 👍🏾👋🏾 Phelix
Thanks I really appreciate that! I’m always down to just chill :-)
Great info. I like your camara bag, seems like a great idea if you don’t want other people to know you have your gear with you.

Great video....very informative! ... gorgeous model, beautiful photographer...and, it's really nice to see someone NOT shooting with a Sony A7iii lol. The payload in your hands when shooting is similar to mine with my D4.
