    The idea of these videos is to give a "realistic" view on the whole process involved in making an instrument and not just the "fun" part, as well as showing how much attention to detail and time is necessary during every step of the construction.

    THANK YOU, Lucas!!! Just what I needed to see!!! Not that I'm glad you had a little bit of a hard time (neck block too tight to mold, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I guess), but it is encouraging to see that I wouldn't be alone in having a "challenging" time with this, when the time comes.... It looks as if you cut down the corner blocks a little bit (what you can above and below the mold) first; does that help? Also, is there much deformation that could happen, if you only glue one side of the linings before you remove the mold? (Do the ribs hold their shape without the second linings in?)

      @LucasFabro  3 роки тому +1

      I knew you’d find this helpful no clarifying haha.
      It’s not necessarily a bad thing but leaving half a mm on each side doesn’t affect the shape but it makes the whole process much easier.
      Yes, I like roughing the blocks out a bit so that there’s some more space.
      Regarding the question of what happens if you were to glue only one side, then it will be much much easier to remove the mold of course and even if I do believe there can be deformation it shouldn’t be that significant (I guess it depends on how extremely precise you want it to be)

      @@LucasFabro By "leaving half a mm" do you mean having the ribs a tiny bit (1/2mm) away from the mold? (So not perfectly snug with the mold?) Not sure what I will do about the linings yet. I like the idea of no deformation, so I think I might as well try it the traditional way and glue both sets of linings in, and see how I do. (Might as well try.)

    Oh, wedging the mould out is so stressful to me... Almost glad to see at least you don't just take it right out but have to work for it as well :-P
    Is this footage from your current cello build?

      I didn’t even remember this video was coming out today haha 🤦‍♂️
      Yes, this is my current cello, and I’m sure you’ve seen Kathy commenting previously on other videos and she asked about this so decided to upload the video as a way of giving a “proper” answer.
      Do you also glue the linings on both sides before?
      To be fair, the problem here is that I made the upper block too tight to the mold so it wouldn’t move up and down 😬

      @@LucasFabro I thought so, I recognized the wood and the upper joint of all things ;-)
      I actually haven't, but it makes sense. And no, I only do the back. But I made my mould quite tall, so it kinks a lot if (I mean because...) the ribs fit rather well on it, and I glue the back with the mold inside, just with the blocks knocked free. If I had the upper linings too I think I'd still be fighting oday rather than finishing off, and I'm not about that! :-P
      I recognize your issue. I guess just be more sloppy with the blocks, and they won't fit that well ;-)

      @@Tostra1997 good eye! ;)
      it looks much harder than it is (removing the ribs with the linings glued on both sides out of the mold).
      Although of course it’s not something you can do with a tall one. Must be quite heavy! Curious to know why did you go for that option.

      @@LukaszFabro Oh, there's a good answer for it, actually. I made it for my second ever instrument, and I wasn't very good at... Anything, honestly.
      So I wanted to help myself out with getting the ribs square by making two identical pieces and placing them far apart to make a solid and square reference. It's not extremely tall, but enough that it's not happy to be removed. I suppose removing it before attaching the back would help, but again, I'd rather be safe and keep the shape while gluing, at least for now.

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 3 роки тому

      And yeah, it is extremely heavy, and a little dangerous for the exposed ribs while handling because of it, so there's that

    Hi! Wery usefull video. I like to ask you if an old cello has ribs that are not bend the way it used to because of weather issues, how can it be fixed? Should I resemble the whole cello to fix the shape of the ribs? Maby you have a video how to fix that? Saludos from Sweden.

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much!
      I'm afraid I don't do repairs and only make new instruments, so I can't be much of a help.
      However, if the ribs on an old cello have been affected by weather or other issues and are no longer in their original shape, resembling the whole cello to fix the shape of the ribs may be necessary in some cases, but I'm sure it's a complex and delicate process.
      Keep in mind that if the cello suffered big weather issues, it's also possible that other parts of the cello, such as the neck or soundpost, may need to be adjusted.

    Lucas: Another question just occurred to me last night. (I lie awake at night sometimes thinking about these things..ha ha.) Why do lots of people seem to glue either the top or the back onto the ribs before they remove the mold?

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  3 роки тому +1

      No worries, I think we all think about these things at night.
      Because it takes much less time as if you remove the ribs before then they're going to change shape and to glue them you'll have to adjust them to the instrument again. First by clamping everything without the glue and then putting it with the spatula (as I did on my fb video).
      The main advantage of removing the ribs first though is that the finishing of the blocks and the inside of the ribs is much easier (and I think it's also possible to achieve a better result).
