    Who decided, or perfected the angle of the arch for the top, and the amount of scoop for the back? It's seems such a lot to know. Thank you. At 4.47 minutes you are doing what I referred to as scoop--- the inner arching.

    Question for you sir, will a kit violin actually sound good? I realize that good is a relative, subjective term. Is it it best to start a violin learning/making/ playing journey with a kit violin, and then later on graduate to making one from scratch?

    Wonderful video series, especially as I prepare to build my first cello. If you do not mind me asking, why were smaller strips of wood glued to the end blocks prior to gluing them to the form?

  • @WhiteDragon689

    If I was going to build new instruments. I would take into account modern scientific ways. I would follow Doctor Nagyvary's work with woods and varnishes. I would use CNC routing machines to route the basic shapes from what is known and then use traditional methods to fine tune it. I would use modern glues instead of hyde glues. Of course the purists will scream to high heavens but all you need to do is to prove them wrong. Very fine instruments should be for the common folk also. The old makers did this with their level of tech available. Why should it stop with them? I bet someone will find a better material than pine woods form a specific forest in Italy soaked in salt water. Metalic alloys perhaps. It will be a hybrid that takes the best of all worlds.

      To be fair, all of the things you have mentioned have been tried many times but high end violin making always goes back to traditional techniques. Whether it's for prestige or sound, who knows?

    Lucas, you take for granted the amount of time and effort that goes into producing such a beautiful instrument that mimics the human voice from bass/baritone all the way up to soprano. Lucas, is there such a thing as a world cello registry? What does the serial # 10735 signify? Was this cello built in 1943? My cello was built in Germany. Please advise me.

    Thank you for these wonderful videos. Really lets one appreciate just how much work and craftsmanship is going into a fine instrument such as this! I'm just wondering, what is the original weight of the plates, and what is the final weight? It seems like a lot of beautiful maple is being discarded in the process... probably can't be avoided, but still a little sad. Wouldn't it be nice if you could "scoop out" some of the center stock for making smaller instruments? (Not practical, I know...)

Templates, measurements, etc.? If I can buy them (or the templates to build them), where can I buy them?

  • @andretim75
    @andretim75 9 місяців тому

    The akusticus is really a very good tailpiece for many cellos -- not even considering the low price. I. would say that for rather bright sounding instruments it could even be the best option. For me I do have a bois d`harmony on a cello which is rather dark sounding and it is a bit brighter or maybe can produce more overtones than the Akusticus. I am not really convinced that the two other wooden tail pieces introduces here are better options for this very cello, but i guess that could have something to do with the sound my computer produces ( have to listen with good headphones again I. guess)...

    What about resale value? When this sustainability fad peters out nobody’s going to want an instrument made from fake wood. Why not just use aluminum? Ugh.

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro 9 місяців тому

      It will not affect the resale value at all, as fingerboards are nonetheless parts of the instrument that get changed over time anyways. When they get some use over them, they get removed and replaced. It’s a very common and simple process. So if someone doesn’t want that fingerboard, it can simply be changed for another one. Even though the question is rhetorical, the reason why not using something like aluminium is very simple. It’d affect the sound of instrument massively. That’s why I’m looking that these alternatives to ebony are also made out of wood, and if you reach to the end of the video you’ll see that one of the reasons that I’m giving on why I don’t think I’ll use it is exactly that one, the sound (even if it’s better for my allergies and all that). So to summarise it. No, it won’t affect the resale value. The instrument is made out of wood (same wood that has always been used). The alternative fingerboard is also wood based. Thanks for your comment though, as I said at the end of the video I’m really interested in knowing what people think of these alternatives, if they’d buy an instrument with any of them and so on. So your answer is a very honest one and certainly representative of what a lot of people might think.
