When I was in Joburg aka Johannesburg back in 2002 I had both the honor and privilege of staying at Lilliesleaf. It was a very special experience for me to learn and see where Nelson Mandela and other revolutionaries used to hide out and were arrested during the fight to end apartheid. Truly learning how "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". The U.S was calling the revolutionaries terrorists meanwhile a fellow African from the north was funding Nelson Mandela's cause. So wouldn't the man or country who helped the cause of fighting and ending apartheid also be considered a freedom fighter... but that man was called a "mad dog " by the U.S.. That's correct Muammar Gaddafi was the man who help fund Nelson Mandela's revolution against apartheid and Mandela never forgot that and became very close friends with Gaddafi after being released from being imprisoned. Mandela even referred to Gaddafi as the Guide Gaddafi. Mandela even ripped Obama a new ass when asked why would he invite Gaddafi to South Africa. I still have no clue why Jim Jefferies moved to the U.S when he's so much more of a humanitarian and realist than the warmongering irrational fascists of the US.
I can only speak for myself, but I know why someone would want to make such tours: If you save the money to travel the world for two weeks a year, you also want to get to know the people and culture. Also you feel the urge to give these people something back. Because the most beautiful places in the world are in some of the poorest countries. So you can either choose between staged cultural events (e.g. a village that 'performs' for you) or 'poverty tourism'. I personally find both options very, very cringy. But I also don't to hide the walls of an All Inclusive hotel. So, what's the right thing to do?
In the Philippines I paid a private guide directly. He took me around the island on his motorcycle. I didn't ask for a "poverty tour" (imagine he would have been offended if I did) but he took me to the neighborhood his family lived and told me about the houses and restaurants, and little places. Took me to the local church, then to the big fancy catholic church, then to see the natural sights, then to do touristy things like zipline. I probably ridiculously "overpaid" him, but it was the off-season, and I am sure he needed the money, and the five or ten bucks I could have bargained down just don't mean as much to me. Plus, it was a fantastic experience, totally worth it.

You used the wrong picture in "snap selfies with homeless people"
The picture was taking in Morocco.. and the person wasn't homeless.. it's his job 😂😂
I wish I have an Andrew
I’m South African and I’m proud Andrew ate a sheep’s head. Trust me they taste good
Poverty tour makes you feel soooooooo rich!!
$100 is R1500 lol thats a decent amount in SA
You can survive on R1500 a month in RSA
You'd survive in poverty though.
South African and living in Finland for the past 5 years. Trust me Europe knows nothing about poverty or how to approach such situations.
Just in case bring an andrew hahahaha🤣🤣🤣
i feel very bad for these townships . may they find peace.
I can only speak for myself, but I know why someone would want to make such tours:
If you save the money to travel the world for two weeks a year, you also want to get to know the people and culture.
@@jglobetrotter2830 - Nobody is fucking asking for poverty tours. This is just something that guilty white westerners have called it to make themselves feel better for being rich without actually having to do something constructive to alleviate poverty.
Even though you’re a white man reporting from an impoverished black community, there’s some wisdom in your message!! Keep it up, you’re on the path! I’d love to see more 😘
The only way this would make sense as if you take your rich spoiled kids to show them how good they have it. And how blessed they are so they can appreciate what you gave them and the work you do for them.
Did you see at 3:20 where the on the left side of the screen was going into incoming traffic 😬
4:47 A year later and that didn't age well...
why tf did i read ur comment
I thought exactly the sam thing
We've been doing that with Rich people for years...think Hollywood Tours and small town Christmas Open Houses
I'm South African and when I was in Kenya with an Australian fella, I should have asked him his thoughts on sheephead.
this is so good thanks for showing how divided south africa is
Hell, I just walked in the door, returning from 3 weeks in South Africa 😂😂I did not go into any slums ...I went to Kruger park 😊 but there surely is a contrast between the wealth and the poverty ...the most contrast of any country in the world ...sad...
I'm South African, and that's so true!
"I'm a bit nervous, Jim"...I would be too, Andrew.
Wow this is a really authentic experience.
As a German I had fun with this piece
So many people in small, confined spaces HERRLICH!
oh man, we love you!
I can't believe this exists. This is like something you would see in a sci-fi movie to show how far humanity has fallen.
True
" I am expecting to see a lot of poverty. And beauty in everything " - a white man.
When will Trevor Noah guest star!
Trevor hates white people
@@danidejaneiro8378 you know what, I don't know if you're trolling or not and I disagree that he hates white people in general, but I'm pretty sure he hates Europeans...
@@danidejaneiro8378 So I guess Trevor hates his dad
You can't watch this whole eating, it's not that it's disgusting, it's just that it's too damn funny 😂
Lol... My brother got hepatitis B sharing beer in cape Town...
I agree with not doing tourist tours. I went to Southeast Asia. And I walked everywhere. And met real people. In real poverty and they were real nice real giving great people you won't see that on a tour bus.
I thought it was somewhat disrespectful that Jim refused to try the food or beer. I know he was trying to be funny but he completely undermined his entire point.
Jane Doe
He’s an actual germaphobe, he wasn’t joking and said on multiple occasions, I also live with mysophobia (the actual name for it)and it’s not something that can always be pushed through. It’s far more respectful for him to have some one else participate than him having a panic attack or throwing up because of the stress.
As a white person who lived in the lower 9th for a few years I can tell you how to blend in.don't see someone's skin as a characteristic of their personality. beauty is everywhere .it just looks different for people with different standards.
Nor their bank accounts. But the people on this show seem obsessed with defining people by their skin and wealth.
@@danidejaneiro8378 money is not gonna do shit for how a person keeps and makes interpersonal relationships in fact 99.9 percent of the time it makes it worse and yes the people all bout getting that cash bro are also the people locking their cars door when a black guy walks to his car in a parking lot
I don't drink alcohol. I'm a vegetarian.. Andrew!!!!.. LOL.. Jim is by far my favorite comedian of the day..
This shit is why i used to cringe whenever i saw foreigners in my neighbour
There was somthing similar here in Sweden during the 1600:s, and quite probably in other countries as well. The nobility would go down and walk into poor people homes, especialy if they had vistors from idealized nations such as France, to amuse themselves over how "dumb and superticious" the peasants were.
But, Jim, you cant get a cold sharing a drink of alcohol. It kills the bacteria.
Can't believe Jim was here😭💔
where can i buy an Andrew?
Even if you’re intent is “good” wanting to see and experience poverty in another country that fact that there is a business built around it is pretty disgusting. Those communities should be able to profit from the tourism in principle. But IMHO yeah this is fucking hideous.
as a south African i int having that beer or that lamb head( because Pigs head is better) nice take on how yall look when u come over to those poor areas
Yikes, with the shared beer bucket
