"It's always been that way, so why change it?" is an inherently broken argument. No tradition was "always that way" because there was a time _before_ that tradition, meaning the very implementation of tradition is a change from what was "always that way" before.
What these people are really saying is "Well _I'm_ comfortable with it this way, why can't everyone else just do things _my_ way?", ignoring that for their way to take root in the first place, someone else's way was replaced.

Although I get it, just like here in the Netherlands, since this year we’ve officially gotten rid of the “black pete” thing and made him colorless or rainbowcolors or just with spots ( because he came through a chimney). The worries are now that it’ll get too PC and people start chasing after all our traditions and things that make us fundamentally Dutch. We love our culture

I think what some of the commenters are missing is that the COLOR of the doll isn't offensive, it's the CARICATURE of the doll that is offensive. We should have black dolls but not as diminutive caricatures of what white people think of them. This is not PC, it's humanity and the golden rule.

    • @olafspetzki
      @olafspetzki 5 років тому +38

But: Is every "CARICATURE" automatically racist?
Every person has genes of a certain origin, may be dominantly black, asian, caucasian,... what ever. That means that every caricature of a real person is of an ethnic group as well. Does that make every caricature automatically racist?
Would a caricatury white doll also be automatically racist?
Oncle Ben's is racist? Really? (Here in europe you still get it everywhere) I really don't understand it. If he would be in chains - yes that would be racist. But just an older black guy in a white collar shirt and a pleased smile...? It's just a guy to me. Could be Uncle Chang's or Uncle Jim's as well.
Here in europe we had no black slaves. Nobody thinks of slaves when he sees a black person. I am sure there is a massive trauma within the US society caused by its past. But other parts of the world had a different past, therefore don't have these problems today and from their perspective these political correctness things in the US often look excessive - at least inappropriate to transfer them to other countries. Might be the right thing for the US. But that does not mean that such a black doll sparks even the slightest bit of racism in Africa, Asia, Europa or even Australia.

It's just a doll, sure it's comically enhancing certain features as a way to portray a certain race, but let's face it certain races have certain features that make it obvious where they're from, we can't be bullshitting ourselves by saying we're completely colorblind and saying all people are the same, I don't get offended by people portraying a Mexican as a brown, short, black hair having, sombrero wearing, taco eating person, mainly because I know and am related to a lot of Mexicans with most of those traits

You really dont think about it until its brought up, its not like the history is on the side of the box. If I remember correctly, at least for Uncle Ben's, the guy on the box was just someone they thought seemed trustworthy and therefore people would buy the product- without permission of the guy in question. Or ever paying him for having his likeness on the box.
Manufacturers would use the excuse of brand recognition to defend keeping it as is, and I'm pretty sure theyd fabricate outrage to keep the packaging as is instead of picking something with less racist backgrounds, but at least to me with these particular products, they're not really as bad as the golliwogs as far as insensitive caricatures go.

Theres nothing racist on the traditions youre mentioning:
Just on 5:38 the cream of wheat advertise text is really descriminatory. Or even racist
Stereotypes are not bad in general. It matters what kind it is. When its is sayin the mentioned groups is worth less, unintelligent and so for example. Then theyre bad and should be banned.
Mostl stereotype is just a harmless human phenomena used by every group of people by country, nation, religion, ethnics and so on oppose to other groups. You shouldnt bann that. Because you do it to and you always will. Its a natural element of comedy, of making things spectacular and so on.
Thinking stereotypes are real in general, that is a problem. But thats not the fault of the existing of stereotypes. Its a educational problem.
Your problem is to be willing to do the right thing by fighting against the wrong things. You can bann every word, brand, film etc. with stereotypes oppose to all races, religions and so on. It will not change the subject youre aiming for. It will just make the world a bit more insane

Had they used it in relation to a person or group of people that would be clearly inarguably racist but in the context used here there was no racism used.. When you offend someone, and repeat it and normalize it, it can cause actual mental harm to the those groups. This causes America's favorite scapegoat for shootings; mental illness.
It's a form of systemic bullying; just because you are not affected, it doesn't mean others are not. And within those affected, there are degrees to the outcomes.
You should be free to be offended, yes. But at the same time, you shouldn't be free to allow a cycle of putting others down.
Being politically correct can get overbearing, like saying swearing is not okay, when it has its actual uses.

I was there for a number of years and became well acquainted with the local cultures and languages. A fairly common sight was the use of the 'N' word to name or describe a local business, i.e. : hair salon, grocery, music shop, cafe, side of the road food stand, barber shop, soda store, or cigarette sales, etc. The varied spellings added spice to signage. Spellings included, starting with the obvious, Negro, and variants : Nigger, Nigga, Niggah, Niggaz, et al. As you could imagine I enjoyed some interesting conversations about this Tradition. In that part of the world this is seen as an everyday thing and normal.

For instance, I wouldnt expect anyone in China to really know what that word means, or really care. If anything though I think they were just saying it because it doesnt hold the same value to them. I guess it's just a matter of choosing to get offended or choosing not to get offended.

It went something like that there were white "families" among the cards. Like one card for father, mother, son and daughter and then there was one black guy with red lips. The goal was to gather different families and pass down the Pekka from one player to another. Then the one who was left with Pekka in hand at the end lost and became called Black Pete. I found nothing racist about it and just thought the Pekka looked funny and... omg I just realized how racist that game sounds.

I don't feel like a Master race. Then again I think that especially with white people we just want to make sure we make room for a new mixed culture, but still feel like we're still as relevent as ever. And that is a tough thing, to realize that thing you're fond of, uncle Ben's, yes should be changed. But then again it particularly feels like when we mention how I don't like being called cracker, people get offended that I get offended over that. And so it feels like white people can't be racially offended. Yes I can! And that's okay. But I really do think that there's a big difference in being racially offensive and being racist. And that's a big thing nowadays. Where do you draw the line between racially offensive and being a racist.
