Sofie's World Yes, also because with my regular permesso Delta wouldn't let me ever check in online on the return back to Italy, bc the desk workers had to evidently look at my permesso dates. Can't wait to finally have dual citizenship! Xx

Have you tried traveling to countries that are difficult to go as an American (like Iran or Cuba)? Would you recommend it or do the border guards get suspicious when, on your Italian passport it says "Country of Birth: USA"?
@@wcsdiaries International entry requirements are not based on "suspicion". They are based on the country of origin and entry requirements of the country you are traveling to at the time of your entry. Also, this video did not address travel variances for those having three or more passports - and/or different types, other than a basic tourist passort. Anyone this applies to should not rely on this video to have successful inter-country travel.
Nice video Sofie. I’m a dual citizen American/Ecuadorian. I wanted to go to China so bad and I almost applied for a tourist visa(since Americans need it). But I found out that Ecuadorian citizens do not need Visa to enter China. So I left the States using my American passport but at the counter they did ask me for my visa to enter china, i told them I was using my Ecuadorian passport to enter China, since its visa free. Before I boarded the plane they ask me for my passport again so I showed them my American passport, they then questioned the visa again, i told them I was Using my Ecuadorian passport to enter china. So when I got to China I used my Ecuadorian Passport and there was no problem. Left the country using my Ecuadorian passport but they asked me for my American visa lol, since i was traveling to the US. So i told them I don’t need it since I’m an American citizen. Once I got the states I used my American passport. So yeah, kinda complicated but it is possible.

For entering and leaving the US, use the American one. For the EU and countries that aren't politically friendly to American citizens, use the Italian one. It's not rocket science lol
Russia's an exception to that. Both EU people and Americans need a visa for Russia, however Americans get 3 year multi entry visas while Europeans get a single entry up to 30 day one....
For entering and leaving the US you MUST use your US passport if you have one, it is not a choice.
Actually, for EU countries, there is no need to use neither of those passwords. European citizens do not need a password at all to travel inside the Schengen Area of the EU. All the times I have travel inside the EU my national document is enough to travel
@Catholic Truth Did you read what I said? You MUST use your US passport for entering and leaving the US IF YOU HAVE ONE. Otherwise you obviously use the passport you happen to have. I have a US passport and a Dutch passport, that means I MUST use my US passport to enter or leave the US. I would use my Dutch passport to enter the Netherlands and I could pick either to enter say Germany or Britain.
@Catholic Truth I don't know if immigration will have an issue with that. I suggest strongly to apply for a passport ASAP OR at least have your certificate of Naturalization with you to be safe, even better would be to be able to show you applied for a passport. Except as otherwise provided by the President and subject to such limitations and exceptions as the President may authorize and prescribe, it shall be unlawful for any citizen of the United States to depart from or enter, or attempt to depart from or enter, the United States unless he bears a valid United States passport. Don't risk it.

My friends and I were joking about getting a group house in Canada and I’d be the one getting the Canadian citizenship. It got to the point where we talked about backpackers having multiple passports and a Pokémon-binder style passport holder when someone went to customs.
I know it could sound unbelievable, but for an italian it's quite fast to get or to renew his passport.
You got the paperwork on the website, you book an appointment online and in 10 mins at a near Police Station you get the paperwork done. In 10 days you'll get the new one (and in case of emergency there's a specific procedure if I'm not wrong).
Moreover in the past you had to pay an annual tax to renew it while today you pay the taxes only every 10 years, when the passport must be redone.

Question - have you ever booked a flight to Italy/Europe while you were in the US and tried putting in the credentials of your Italian passport? I have dual citizenship with Italy as well, and the last time I booked a return flight from Boston to Paris, I tried to enter in the number of my Italian passport, but then the airline website said that I would need to input my visa information as well?? I assume that they must have thought that I was a foreigner living in the US on some sort of visa lol. Just wondering if you've ever encountered the same issue and if so, how you dealt with it? It's not really a problem right now, but I know that starting in 2021, Americans and travelers of other nationalities will be subject to an ESTA-type visa when wanting to travel to the EU for tourism purposes, and I am wondering if when booking a ticket, the airline website will prompt foreign travelers to enter in the info for that visa as well - but being a dual citizen, I would love to avoid that haha

I'm a dual citizen of Canada and the US. When crossing the border, I just show my American passport, since I live in the US. If I show both, it's a big hassle.
why since it is legal to hold 2 passports
No big hassle, nobody at the CBP would care.
Since you live in US, try not to get caught using Canadian medical as things could get nasty.

This is very interesting when you have the options but you also need to be aware of what passport to use upon departure and arrival. I have dual citizenship for USA 🇺🇸 and for St Lucia 🇱🇨. I travel a lot and this is what l discovered. For me to enter some African Countries with my American passport I need to pay a fee for the visa upon arrival. If l use my St Lucia 🇱🇨 passport its visa free upon arrival. So when l am going to that Continent I always double check ✔ if there is a visa fee upon arrival for Americans and so l use the passport that benefits me. But you always depart and arrive in the USA with your USA 🇺🇸 passport.

Some countries (like the UK) do not directly 'check' passports when flying out of the country, they instead use the passport info submitted to the airline/check-in counter, therefore for entering passport info for a flight leaving the UK you must use the same passport you used to enter the UK, as this will also act as the exit border control check. If this is not the passport you will be using to arrive at your destination, this is fine, if there are any questions asked by the airline regarding entry validity for your destination, then you can show them the passport you will be using to enter the country you are travelling to.

But what about the return trip? In other words, say you are travelling from UK to US as dual UK/US citizen, this advice would be to book the flight using a UK passport to "exit the UK" on a UK passport. Then you enter the US passport control using your US passport, as required. Okay, fine. HOWEVER... you have to eventually leave the US to come back to the UK, and the US also does not have an exit check, and thus according to this, will use the passport info used to book the flight which is the UK passport?
@@edwub8595 I believe most airlines allow you to change the submitted passport information per leg of a flight booking, meaning you can enter your US passport details during the online check in procedure for a flight leaving the US.

Dual American/Irish national here :) 🇺🇸🇮🇪🇪🇺 haven't used my Irish passport before (I only got it a few years ago) but plan to use it in all EU Countries, Iceland/Norway/Liechtenstein/Switzerland, the UK of course (Common Travel Area), and possibly other places too.
doesnt it cause an issue when you have to get an entering and a leaving stamp, and they are both in different passports?
I got detained in Thailand for having multiple passports my US French and Israeli they saw them in security scanner or something flying in from Australia they must have thought I was a con artist or something nefarious I actually had to call my embassies the US and French Embassies to get it sorted out idk they didn’t care about the Israeli one but i always travel with all 3 just in case something bad happens I want to be able to get bailed out by any of my countries EU US or Israel you never know
dear god. i have Canadian and UK passport and now i'll worry going to Thailand post covid lol (probably will use my UK passport but not sure yet). some visas in Asian countries are cheaper/easier with my UK passport, some with my Canadian so idk if i should bring both orrrr
ex: visa for India is cheaper on my Canadian passport i think, meanwhile for Thailand coming overland on my Canadian passport i can only stay 15 days without a visa i think, 30 days if flying. UK is 30 days either mode of transport (and i might be flying in since Bangkok is a popular place to start backpacking in Asia but idk yet)

Well, some people have 3 to 5 passports - and the rules vary based on the type they are and the combination of the country of origin of each passport. This scenario covers one simple example of having two tourist passports, so anyone that has three or more , and/or different types - you cannot go by this video without having problems. Also, there are scenarios that are not even touch upon here, that also could cause border problems for you. Be sure to research YOUR own specific combination of passports - as it relates to ALL of the countries you are traveling to on any particular trip, so as not have problems getting into, or out of, a country.
I also have an american and italian dual passport and living in Italy in Milan. Tips were useful Sophie :)) I remember last year when I went to NYC at customs I showed my american passport and they asked me tons of questions like: what country are you coming from, why are you in th US, who do you have here, where are you staying...so annoying!!!

I don't understand, if you are an American citizen they shouldn't be asking those kind of questions, right? I mean you are coming back home legally speaking and they should only worry about weapons, drugs or non declared money (or at least thats what I thought).

ESTA is part of the visa waiver program. They call it that ("Visa Waiver") for a reason: it's a short electronic confirmation, not a visa.
I have two citizenships and passports at the moment USA (born there), Ireland (dad born there) and working on Italian (grandmother born there).

I'm a dual Australian & New Zealand citizen and having 2 passports actually gives me more hassles and delays at immigration. Let me explain.
New Zealand and Australian citizens can usually skip the immigration queues and use the 'smart gates' at either end by scanning their passport & looking at the facial recognition camera. Gate opens & through you go, no queuing at the immigration counter.
But having passports from both countries throws a spanner in the works. Australia requires it's passport holders to enter and leave Australia on their Australian passport. Unfortunately this means that I can't use the smart gates, because I enter New Zealand on my New Zealand passport and if the same passport isn't used at both ends then the smart gate doesn't work.
So every time I enter I have to queue up with all the foreigners instead of being able to use the smart gates like all the other New Zealand & Australian citizens can.
Then when I finally get to the front of the queue, upon presenting my NZ passport the immigration officer invariably asks me why I didn't just use the smart gate instead of queuing up, and I have to explain it's because I'm a dual national & Australia forces me to enter & leave on my Australian passport & this seems to screw up the system. Then they check their computer & look concerned & ask me which flight I arrived on. Apparently, because they aren't expecting me on this passport, they can't even see what flight I arrived on. It really seems to mess with their system.
So although this is probably a unique situation it is not always quicker to go through immigration if you are a dual national. In these circumstances specifically traveling between Australia & NZ it actually slows things down considerably at both ends.
One solution I've found is to leave NZ on my Australian passport, even though I entered on my NZ passport. This seems to work & allows me to use the smart gate at the Australian end. But I still have the same issue of not being able to use the smart gate at the NZ end when entering on my NZ passport.
I could enter NZ on my Australian passport and use the smart gates, but then I would be entering as a foreigner & be subject to answering additional health and character questions before entering. Although Australians can reside indefinitely in NZ there are certain requirements for example, which NZ citizens are not subject to, and although I meet those requirements, I should be able to enter as a NZ citizen on my NZ passport.

When the us passport expires do you just go to the embassy to renew it or do you have to go back to the states to renew it?
You can go to the embassy, but I would renew at least 6 months before it expires!
When I was in Italy and my U.S. passport expired I renewed it at the consulate in Napoli. Did not have to go to the embassy to do it.
Thanks for an interesting video. It was helpful in several ways. I'd like to point out that you often, in the video, confuse immigrations and customs. I know of no country where one need not go through customs just because one is a national of that country. The rules and regulations may differ for citizens, but one will always have to go through customs. I assume you meant immigrations -- as the video is not about getting through customs.

Good video, I have dual citizenship as well Dominican Republic citizen and US citizen, the good thing is I can still enter the Dominican with my US passport, all I have to do is show the Dominican authority my Dominican ID card (cedula) as my proof of Dominican citizenship and I'm all set...no Dominican passport needed😁

I'm dual national British/ Australian.
Almost always use my British passport.
But got caught out when going to Australia the last time.
Flew in to Australia via Dubai from England.
Used my British passport.
Which was fully legal with correct visas etc.
But on flying out of Australia, as we passed passport control. My daughter mentioned I was Australian.
After a stern talking to.
My visa was canceled and I was stamped out on my Australian passport.
So yeah.
Use the right passport coming in and out of the country.
for example:i am dual canadian and Iraqi passport holder i entered Kuwait with my Canadian passport and i did a visa as a Canadian but once i was to leave Kuwait and enter Iraq .I applied for an Iraqi visa on my Canadian passport !!They said that was the rules!

What about traveling to Italy while waiting on your Italian passport? No one can give me a straight answer. I have Italian citizenship, but don’t have my passport yet. Does that mean I cannot enter Italy? Or can I still travel as a US citizen until I get my Italian passport?

Great video. If we have dual citizenship (we should have Italian next year) and US Citizens with Global Entry are you saying we should book the flight to the EU with the Italian passport credentials? My airline profiles have my US info and global entry (which gets through security faster). So if I sound confused.
What if both the countries you have citizenship in have strict visa requirements and you are booking a two-way ticket between them? Which nationality should you book the tickets with? The one you are currently staying in, or the other one?
This is interesting, but my question would be what if you're traveling to Brazil from the United States? I imagine maybe you use your Italian passport for booking and airline check in, then your American passport for departure immigration and then the Italian passport arriving to Brazil?
When flying to the EU I use my EU(Irish) passport and USA my USA passport. When traveling to a country you are not a citizen of use the passport that will give you the least hassle.

I was wondering as a dual citizen (US and Switzerland), would I be stopped from leaving to go to Switzerland when my US passport is expired but my Swiss one is valid?
I have dual citizenship USA and Ireland (EU) through my father with both passports. Just found out I am also an Italian citizen through my maternal grandfather so started working on that one too. Both Ireland and Italy are in the EU so not sure if there is any value in having two EU passports and three total.
If one leaves EU, and you have both! Im also dual, USA and IRELAND, FBR certificate only a month old, waiting for Irish passport now.

Have question. My wife with American and Thai passports. Thai is with madin name and American with married name. Would normally travel on Thai passport to Thailand to avoid visas. Have never shown American passport on exit USA, only entering. Question is is ask, but 2 different last names, but carrying certified marriage certificate, would this pass check ok? Have never seen a check at exiting USA.
Im still confused, in Australia you have to scan your passport you booked the ticket on when leaving, if you try to switch passports I imagine it will fail , so I imagine the ticket is tied specifically to your passport

So when I fly to the Uk from Greece I’ll book the ticket with my British passport, at customs in Athens airport I’ll show my Greek passport, when boarding the plane I’ll show my British passport and when I arrive in the Uk I’ll show my British passport
what passport do you use to go to Italy? once in Italy, and you stay longer than 3 months, will the U.S question why you were gone for more than 3 moths? and if so,...do you just show them the Italian passport?

Im currently in the same situation im using my US passport to return home but need the exit stamp with the one i came here with so people have said to “show the airline the passport your traveling with” but “show immigration the passport you arrived with and need to exit with did you figure it out?

What would you do in this case? As a dual Mexican-Austrian citizen traveling from Austria (my residence) to Turkey. Mexico has an agreement so the visa is for free, that´s good, my understanding is that I need to leave the country as Austrian (also to purchase the flight ticket that way). But that way the visa wouldn't match exactly with my ticket and passport (there is a one letter difference). What would you recommend? Than you!

Hello Sofie. please I have a question. If someone has duel citizenship ( Swedish and Jordanian). And my destination will be from Sweden to Jordan. So can I do “check in “ with my Swedish passport ? It’s because Jordan doesn’t need a visa , so that’s why I thought I can travel with my Swedish passport . But when I enter in the Jordanian airport I will show my Jordanian passport. Do yo have an answer for that ?

If some one have dual passport went to a country till example Jordan and used another passport not the one he traveled by. Question the stamps become in the second one and not the he travelled by .so the pass authority Eller control I airport doesn’t ask why there isno stamps on the pass?

I am Dual Eu /US citizen and have had Irish passport for about 30 years. One thing you may run into when returning to the US is when you fill out the agriculture form(Now done in machine plus form) they want to know what countries you have been in. One of my trips to Europe I had been in 5 different EU countries and I put that on the form. Then when the immigration officer looked at my US passport he said " Where are the stamps from all these countries ?" I then showed him my Irish passport and he could not find anything except a stamp from Moldova. He accused me of lying so I told him to get his supervisor and when he came he understood the dual situation. He said to the officer I was legal, but in his mind it should not be legal as I could go anywhere and they might never know. That is why I save every boarding pass just in case I run into a total dummy.
He was not knowledgeable that travel within Europe with your EU status there is no stamping of passport.
I am also US/Irish and ran into the same issue in Dublin when my flight got cancelled. I had NO stamps because I am Irish.

I'm confused, I though the US requires you to leave and enter with the USS passport. So if I'm going to my other country, I figured I would use the US passport on American land, and when I land to my other country, I'd use that passport on that land.

I traveled to Tahiti from SFO using my UK Passport which was fine but I had issues returning so I had to show my USA Passport before I could leave the islands. Perhaps the EU is more reasonable. I’ll be in Vancouver this summer so I hope the Canadians can manage not troubling me with my UK/USA documents.

In your example of going to Brazil, would you still bring your US passport just in case or would you leave that at home in Italy?
I always travel with both. But you can’t go to Brazil as an American without a visa sojust make sure you know all of the requirements before traveling.
I have dual citizenship, and I thing that I would have a problem, in my two passport I have different heights. When I make the Italian documents (ID card and passoprt) It was written 172 cm, due an measurement made when is was 18 (and that time I try to "show" to be highest possible, yes I was a bit dumber in some question) and for years I used that height. A month ago with my nephew that asked me to measure him enden with him to ask me to measure my self and with more accurate meausre ended to be tall 171 cm, and I written this measurement. ONly today days before the appointement to a consulate I notice the thing. So according to Italy I'm 172 cm, and according to Switzerland I'm 171 cm. It would be a problem when traveling?

That’s a tough one because you need a visa to enter Brazil as an American, so if you’re using your Italian passport to enter for ease of not having to get the visa, then I wouldn’t suggest using your U.S. passport to enter the U.S. because then the Brazilian passport control will see your U.S. passport doesn’t have the appropriate visa…
Also it depends are you leaving from the U.S. to Brazil in the first place?
When it comes to visas it can get tricky so make sure to do your research or talk to an immigration lawyer who will be able to explain most up to date laws to help you understand your situation!
