20 years later - and this game still pulses with love in the hearts of the fans. It may not have been "commercially" as successful as earlier entries - but this is what gaming is all about: Love, Nostalgia and Immersion in a story that can delight players for 2 decades. Long may the Love for AOD live on ♥️♥️♥️
New Tomb Raiders are like a sweet, light wine - everyone likes it. But AOD is like a century old fine, dry wine - not everyone will like all aspects of it, but for the connoisseur - man, it's a blast.
Not gonna cry, not gonna cry, not gonna cry... 😭😭😭 Seriously, what a beautiful tribute. Chris, the fan community owes you a huge debt of gratitude for helping celebrate and preserve this monumental game (and you owe me a box of tissues 😂😭❤).
I have always been curious about this game. I remember the advert in Official PlayStation Magazine where she had her face reflected in a puddle of blood and was excited but didn't know much about Tomb Raider. Then there was a demo but I was new to PS2 and thought the controls were garbage. Now that I'm more versed in Tomb Raider classic I bet I could appreciate this game. And plus her outfit is so friggin COOL
AOD truly is a treasure trove of _unrealized_ but also of _realized_ potential! What's inside the base game is awesome already, which is obvious as long as one is able to look closely (since it definitely does not spoon-feed you all the information) ànd overcome/get used to some of its gameplay shortcomings. You've said it very well in your love letter to the game (which it totally deserves). Thank you so much.
I used to mute the intro music of traod when i was a kid because it used to scare me so much😂 it’s that effective!! Whoever says traod is not a good game, they’re not a true fan!!
You simply described all my feeling for this game. That's exactly what made me fall in love with the game, the franchise and Lara Croft. Even incomplete, it is a masterpiece in every aspect. I always say with great joy that this one was my first Tomb Raider game and I will always admire and play it! Thank you for this fantastic video! Happy Angel of Darkness month! ❤⭐❤
The Story is truly one if not the best part of it. Tomb Raider 1-5 was never really about a big story, there were the good old booklets with a small lore text, than 1-2 cutscenes before lara got thrown into action, especially tr2 and tr3. And yes it was totally fine this way. In younger years I didn't need a reason how lara was in the middle of a jungle - but AOD? It showed me, how big the impact could be for me, when the Story in a Tomb Raider is a core (hehe) element for the game. We start on a point where Laras Mentor was killed, we know she didn't kill him but we are not 100% so there is a truly big chance it was the series killer..well time to flee and to find answers! The beginning is like a big crime Thriller and its so nice to have answer choices and different ways to find the right answers. It might lacks tombs and...the Gameplay of it needed atleast one more year to get poolished, but the slow start has an mysterious tension already. Than we get to the louvre and from here on its more of a typical tomb raider, but thanks to the notebook we find still so many story elements like caviers information about the dark alchemist or the paintings...and I'm in for it, its something I love from tr2013+, picking up items and getting information about the Story. Well AOD was faster with this. At this point we know from Bouchard and Caviere that Eckharth had to be the Killer, now its time to get the paintings before him and its time to bring him down. The Story for Lara herself only continous after the louvre and hall of season raiding, but thats totally fine since Lara and I are focused to find the next puzzle piece for the big picture. And after the louvre part? We get back from tomb raider action to a crime thriller..well atleast before we get into the strahov...the thriller and action gets fused here and the gothic element getting bigger, you just have the feeling to invade and explore the base of a worldwide dangerous villan, with some plottwists till the end, what a good story truly needs. And the idea of Kurtis was also just brilliant, he is my favorite character in the entire tr-verse, even If we didn't get a lot to see from him and way to less information. The Story could have been even better with less plotholes if the developers had more time to put in more dialoges, better transition or more notebooks entries. Yeah the Story is not perfect, but I think it is still the best in the whole series If you ask me and I love to play the game from time to time just to get into the story again :) The leveldisign and gameplay is for me one of the weakest in the series, but the reason for this is obviously, but this still does not chance the fact that there are some truly great gameplay elements, for example the hall of season idea how everything there is a big puzzle like st. francis folley but this time you have to get upwards somehow, or the louvre invading...and the later water levels where we feed the big fish or dive through the catacombs :) truly cool ideas. The puzzles are generally good for me in this game =). Some places do look amazing, fair point! The music is also a strong point, I did write already a wall of text in the music analyse video, but its a perfect balance between Laras feelings and the darker story itself. It might be laras lowest point in terms of sales and sadly it was not a lesson for the gaming world how important time for developers is, but it has still a big place in my heart. Imagine how this game would get 20 years later from time to time fox patches, its sadly how this will never happening, but the fans, out imagine and beautiful channels like yours are keeping this masterpiece with flaws alive, thank you so much! Happy AOD Month!
I love it when I see people appreciating this game. Back on the day when it came out, I never owned it, my dad and I rented the game at a videoclub and that was my only contact with it for ages, I do remember we never had the chance to beat it either but the way Lara was in that game, left me with a big impression. With the remasters announced, I've been going on a Tomb Raider gaming spree playing the classics, trying some of the newer ones as well and I decided it was time for me to set the score with this game once and for all, so it was like my first time playing it since I didn't remember a thing from back then... and oh, boy, was I invested in this game and I can't even begin to describe the ABSOLUTE BLAST I had playing it. Sure, the game has its flaws, it's bugs and stuff that could've been better... but that story, that ambience, that music, the way Lara was portrayed here... I enjoyed myself like I haven't enjoyed myself in years with a videogame and it made me remember why I loved the Core era of Tomb Raider so much. That last scene in the game, where Lara smiles and walks into the darkness while the main theme is playing feels really symbolic nowdays... but the remasters make me kinda hopeful that someday we're going to have something this good again. Great video
I do think Tomb Raider : The Angel Of Darkness had so much potential to be more commercially successful had the production team been given more time to develop it properly , I just feel the final product looks somewhat rushed when I play through it from start to finish, even though it does have some very memorable cutscenes, atmospheric music and interesting areas to explore in Prague and Paris.
Totally agree, man. Really poetically said! AoD being unfinished is almost an archaeological study piece in itself when it comes to connecting dots using external sources. This game provoked me to test my writing skills for the first time in one of my videos and I thoroughly enjoyed doing so! It's funny, people say AoD fans only love what the game COULD have been, but I loved what this game offered before I knew about any of the development hell it went through ❤️
I see a lot of celebration posts saying "It's awesome, but it's a shame that. .... ." or "It deserves a remake!" Nah, I'm celebrating what we DO have, enough of the caveats. We've had 20 years of 'but the controls...' And I wouldn't trust anyone to remake the game, unless it were a team of skilled and massive AOD fans, respectful of the original content, not trying to 'fix' what they personally saw as wrong.
AoD will be the best TR game ever, and im so happy i know people who love this game as much as me! it is a masterpiece and nobody can ever change my mind!!!! i worship this game! period! :D also i love how you explain why you love the game, because most of the time i just say: i love it because of everything! :D
Wow. I gotta admit that I never played AoD, but after seeing this video? Definitely in my 2023...OK, 2024 tops :-D backlog. What a joy of a video to watch. I've said it before in comments, but your positivism is why I subbed and frequently watch your content even tho I haven't played any TR in a few years. And the analysis you make in the last couple of minutes about the meta-aspect of "tomb raiding" the content of the game....honestly mind blowing. And all this great content in a 5 min (!) video! You could have easily tried to grab that cash in the 10+ mins mark, but even this you get right. Keep up the great work, mate!
That was so beautifully said! ❤ And you're right, AoD has by far transcended just the game itself, but it's also fascinating to realize how much IS in the game itself, even with the changes and cuts, so much managed to make it into the final game from the list all the things you named. Also can I just say something stirred in me just hearing you say "Angel of Darkness" 😄 Your voice is associated with so much cool stuff thanks to the podcast, so hearing AoD in your voice means the promise of cool stuff about AoD, which leads to immediate excitement😍
20 years ago I'll admit I didnt like it as it was so different from TR 1-5, but now 20 years later and looking back it almost as if AoD was the first modern Third-Person video game. I now see AoD is peak Lara 🙌
Damn - as much as it bothers me, this was the only classic TR I never finished. I got maybe half way through, or something like that, and somehow just... ended up never finishing. I remember being frustrated constantly, either at the controls, limited ammo or whatever, I'm not really sure, it's been years... SO many years...and now I stumbled across this video and knowing that we're getting the remasters soon, I got SO EXCITED. For the first time in ages, I'm actually seeing the potential, starting to get why people love this despite its flaws. I've been replaying the others many times over the years but somehow just totally forgot about this one... And now I'm starting to get all hyped, of course over all the three new remasters, but especially this one! I have yet so much to see. I feel like the darker atmosphere and plot in AoD are something that's really speaking to me right now. I hope I'll get to the end this time...
Been watching reviews of the tomb raider games, and almost everyone says that angle of darkness is terrible, Lara was too dark. I personally loved that game the most. I don't think I finished playing the game, got stuck around the ending. But I loved her attitude, the atmosphere, diolauge, combat. I didn't find much of a problem when I played it. Yes there were time's I got stuck, but that was originally the point of tomb raider games, it wasn't supposed to hold your hand, YOU had to figure out what to do. I loved this game and legend the most, but ya, I noticed that after angle of darkness, they seriously dialed back on Lara being cold, like she was in this game. I don't know why people had a problem with it. Then there's the remakes... The prequels, I only played one, it was good, but it wasn't like the other games. As much as I love tomb raider, maybe they should put it on the shelf and leave it alone, or re-release the original games, up to underworld. Bc, yes the prequels showed how Lara began, but I felt like it was unecessary, and they were just milking the franchise by then for money. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
*I don’t know why everyone is complaining about the game being glitchy beyond belief. When I used to play Angel of Darkness, it ran completely fine and I never came across any glitches whatsoever (Though to be fair it’s been a good 11/12 years since I last played it).*
Im half way through re visiting this game for the first time since near its release and I am really enjoying this game. Its a shame it has a bad reputation as to me it's a really good game she's just a bit harder to control than the other games but you get used to it. Great video 😊
I'm so happy that so many people continue to love this game. It's super nostalgic to me, the music to this day makes me want to cry with nostalgia. I think a lot of us were at an age where we could appreciate Lara a bit more (I was 12). I need to get out my copy and play this again! I think my save file is still there on the memory card haha. Great video, and I'm glad you said AOD month, I can't wait to see what else you bring us. :)
Well said Chris. Even tho is probably the TR game that I played the least, it is definitely the one with the most potential with the best storyline and best soundtrack out there and probably the most loved TR game in the series (also the most hated 😂) but true fans can see beyond it’s flaws and appreciate the cult classic that the whole AOD saga is now ❤
It was a strange time for me in the year 2003. I was in the sixth grade and my dad was already doing his best to shelter me from violent video games. He didn't even like the fact that I was killing people in the first five Tomb Raider games from PlayStation 1. Growing up in a religious family was tough when it came to entertainment. As soon as I told him that I wanted the next Tomb Raider game and that it was titled The Angel of Darkness, he was having none of it! He instantly told me that it was the work of the devil and that I would never play it under his roof. Luckily my mom stepped in and reminded him that he is a 80's rocker who didn't mind Ozzy Osbourne and also reminded him that he was once referred to as The Prince of Darkness. She told him that it was stupid that it was okay for me to listen to Ozzy but not play the video game. So in the end, I got what I wanted. Thanks mom. Today, I am one of the many cult followers of this unfinished masterpiece.
Hi there! I know you are based in London but have you thought of hosting a global convention to commemorate the anniversary of AOD or just the other games in general? I'm based in Europe and would gladly pay to partake in such an event!
Hey! So this is what we did last October to mark the start of “AOD 20 Year” At Derby, where the series originated. Every October we have a big Tomb Raider convention there! This year’s will be different, but Murti, the writer, has hinted he’s working on something later this year. Here’s a talk from the AOD celebration - and search my channel for the second one featuring some of the developers! The Angel of Darkness: Interview With Jonell Elliott and Eric Loren ua-cam.com/video/PTeB6JMYPhE/v-deo.html
As someone who who doesn't like to dwell on could-have-beens and who never cared for AoD after 2 playthroughs (except for its superb soundtrack) and about to explore 100% of what the released version of the game has to offer, I'm really looking forward to be "infected" by the fans passion via Raider Cast
Good video, I find aod the saddest tomb raider entry ever development side wise. It was super rushed which sucks because it had so much going for it, just needed to be put together a little bit more. Despite the flaws, it's my 2nd favourite tomb raider
the controls should been they shouldn’t left out level but over all love this game tbh love this game a lot feel should work longer to fix the controls
This game could’ve easily been one of the best Tomb Raider games if it had some more love, time and optimization… I still have some of the fondest and also most annoying memories out of any game in the series with this one. Years later it lives rent free in my mind… if there’s a game in need of a remake it’s this game, but we’d never get it.
I still can't get over how bad the controls are. I'm playing on PS2. I never get past the first level without getting annoyed. Shame really as its the only Tomb Raider game I have never beat, I want to play it more to find out what good parts there are that everyone talks about.
This is a rare case that a bad game become cult. Angel of Darkness had great atmosphere but it was not a good Tomb Raider. There was only one Tomb in the entire game.
I feel The Last Revelation gets very overlooked in terms of bringing a more personal story and dealing with Lara's more vulnerable and human side for the first time, the first 3 games were mostly artefact hunting but this one showed Lara dealing with guilt and working to rectify her mistakes and how it affected her, plus it set up the events of AOD. Having said that I love your passion and your dedication in your videos, you always bring top notch interesting content. 💚
20 years later - and this game still pulses with love in the hearts of the fans. It may not have been "commercially" as successful as earlier entries - but this is what gaming is all about: Love, Nostalgia and Immersion in a story that can delight players for 2 decades. Long may the Love for AOD live on ♥️♥️♥️
Preach!
New Tomb Raiders are like a sweet, light wine - everyone likes it.
But AOD is like a century old fine, dry wine - not everyone will like all aspects of it, but for the connoisseur - man, it's a blast.
Perfect description
At a time where the state of Tomb Raider in uncertain I really appreciate all the work you do with your videos
The main theme of Angel of Darkness is a banger, sets the perfect tone for the atmosphere.
You’re EATING and leaving NO CRUMBS with these TR:AOD videos 💚
Eating every piece! 🖤
Not gonna cry, not gonna cry, not gonna cry... 😭😭😭
Seriously, what a beautiful tribute. Chris, the fan community owes you a huge debt of gratitude for helping celebrate and preserve this monumental game (and you owe me a box of tissues 😂😭❤).

Angel of Darkness one of the Best Storys in Tomb Raider Games
I used to mute the intro music of traod when i was a kid because it used to scare me so much😂 it’s that effective!! Whoever says traod is not a good game, they’re not a true fan!!
You simply described all my feeling for this game. That's exactly what made me fall in love with the game, the franchise and Lara Croft. Even incomplete, it is a masterpiece in every aspect. Great video
Wonderful post, agreed with it all! 🖤
Happy birthday to probably my favourite thing of all time. It’s been a wonderful twenty years (for me!) with you Angel of Darkness!

The best Tomb Raider
OK, you sold me on it. I should finally give this game a chance.
Be sure to patch it !

I still remember a lot of the TV commercials that Lara AoD did. My favorite was the one at the beach and yes, even the spicy LaraXKurtis fanarts
I love the mastercard one!
Been watching reviews of the tomb raider games, and almost everyone says that angle of darkness is terrible, Lara was too dark. I personally loved that game the most. just wish core design had kept tomb raider wish they would work longer to make it better but this really good game
In another world! ☺️
I remember being in primary school and being hyped for this game, because one of the devs came into my class as he was friends with my teacher
*I don’t know why everyone is complaining about the game being glitchy beyond belief. When I used to play Angel of Darkness, it ran completely fine and I never came across any glitches whatsoever (Though to be fair it’s been a good 11/12 years since I last played it).*
If there is one thing worth being on this planet. It's this game.
What a love letter ❤ Thanks for sharing this with us 🤗
AoD theme is madness (pretty much as Legend's)
I'm a TRAOD lover too. I also love TR3. 😢 I hope one day they'll make a remake of it.
Angel of Darkness is the best Tomb Raider
Comments like this are my favourite
Can't agree more ✨️
Was broght here from the song "Angel of darkness"
I do not care what people say.. Angel of Darkness is just awesome!
Im half way through re visiting this game for the first time since near its release and I am really enjoying this game. Its a shame it has a bad reputation as to me it's a really good game she's just a bit harder to control than the other games but you get used to it. Great video 😊

It has a loud bunch of fans, and so it should! We're done of hearing about the flaws; we've had 20 years of it. Now is the time for praise!

@@Raidercast Wonderful! Just come to Europe! Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, Paris You Name it, I'm gonna follow :)
Thanks!
I love your Passion for this Game !
In my Opinion AoD is a bit too dark themed.
But I love the Cinematics and Soundtrack
As someone who who doesn't like to dwell on could-have-beens and who never cared for AoD after 2 playthroughs (except for its superb soundtrack) and about to explore 100% of what the released version of the game has to offer, I'm really looking forward to be "infected" by the fans passion via Raider Cast
Angel of darkness, plot is what keeps cuckmann awake at night
Good video, I find aod the saddest tomb raider entry ever development side wise. It was super rushed which sucks because it had so much going for it, just needed to be put together a little bit more. Despite the flaws, it's my 2nd favourite tomb raider
the controls should been they shouldn’t left out level but over all love this game tbh love this game a lot feel should work longer to fix the controls
Eh??? 😆
2:35 I've always wanted to have a good looks this statue, they made it fall apart way too quick 🙃
It's really cool! Check out a more indepth look:

👏Angel👏of👏Darkness👏Movie👏
whats your opinion on the remaster of 1-2-3
I also really liked this (admittedly rather janky) game. Of the first six games, I think this is the second best, only beaten by the first.
I still can't get over how bad the controls are. I'm playing on PS2. I never get past the first level without getting annoyed. Shame really as its the only Tomb Raider game I have never beat, I want to play it more to find out what good parts there are that everyone talks about.
Why is Lara Croft looks so skinny
This is a rare case that a bad game become cult. Angel of Darkness had great atmosphere but it was not a good Tomb Raider. There was only one Tomb in the entire game.
There were two 'tomb' environments, but if you're basing good TR games on the amount of tombs, TR2 and TR3 would like a word... 😆
It’s awful game with good potential at the same time
I remember when it came out, I was obsessed for years, playing it over and over again, and to this day I never managed to kill Boaz 🫣😃
💚
Hear hear re: TR4 not getting its due! ♥️👏
