I noticed a similar design philosophy in sf6, most things are minus in that game too as opposed to sf5. But they are safe just by the fact that they create so much space. I think it's there to kill your offense and you cant create block strings and make that poke a bit too good
It's there to force you to spend drive meter to get the same offense you got for granted in SF5 with buttons other than chaining lights. If you wanted to meaty with a medium button and then frame trap with another you got to spend meter on a drive rush most of the time unless your character has a oki setup on a particular knockdown to force them to wake up into a late frame to increase your advantage on block.
@@JonathonTheAsshole resetting offense with drive rush is not real tho. Most of the time time you can jab check the rush itself. But doing it after a plus move of a late frame on Oki is fine since it's reactable and you usually get DPed on or lv1 supered

You need take a reading comprehension class if you somehow managed to get that from what I typed.
I think it’s good that it’s that minus. You have to be on it to get the d1 or d3 punish. I don’t think any other mid normal should be fast enough to full combo punish, but if there are even 10 or 11 frame mids then blocking a d1 guarantees a block string. If they get caught mashing then you can hit confirm into a full combo. Anyone who is mad about this is just mad they can’t spam d1 with no real consequence. That’s one of my few issues with mkx. It’s such a good tactic for some characters to spam d1 with little to no consequence. I really hope this is universal for all characters
There is something extremely annoying in mk11... A person pokes you on block, and immediately starts ther string, even high strings, and the windows to interrupt that is really small. Specially for beginners
lol, not being able to abuse low pokes anymore is a plus. Winning was way too easy in MK11 because half the time I'd wait for an opportunity, start spamming d1 as a punish and then throw or use an overhead. The feint cut in to and out of a Doom Eternal reference was hilarious. I caught abiut 1/3 of what you were talking about here due to being unfamiliar with Fighting Game terminology at the level you're using it. A crash course for your followers who aren't major Fighting Game dudes might be helpful in getting more people to appreciate the genre beyond casual play.
I may do something like that when the game gets closer to release. Basically, everything has recovery frames. If you block a sub zero ice blast, you can punish him because he can't block. He has to recover first. So everything is negative to a degree. Some thing very negative, so you can punish. Some only slightly negative, so they need to be defensive after because you're it's your turn to come in and start some pressure. This topic was about low poking jabs being "too negative", punishable to the degree of something like a special attack should be.
This is high level frame data stuff. Most people are hitting all the buttons all the time and having a blast. But gittin gud is a different story where this stuff matters and can be used to your advantage.
Not really. It sounds confusing but what this video comes down to is explaining how D1 works in terms of how long it takes to start/hit/recover(hit)/recover(blocked), additional properties of the move (such as how far it pushes you back on use, or the ability to use special moves after it) and functionality: that being to surprise/mixup your opponent by making use of special move cancels and/or to create a state where neither player is attacking or defending. There’s a lot of FGC terminology that can seem a bit overwhelming, but I wouldn’t call it impenetrable. All of this knowledge isn’t even completely necessary to play and learn the game, but it definitely can help, especially at higher levels of play.
Ppl are complaining waaaay 2 soon the game obviously isnt done yet and they are still balancing it when mkx was 1st announced scorpion had a block infinite bc the game wasnt done
Footsies kinda lack in MK games so we end up poking all the time. That’s why NRS needs to fix the sluggish movement and hit-stun on strings. Look at MK11, it’s poke into special bait all time. Hopefully we get gameplay similar to MK9 again

I also dont think people realize how hard it is to hit a perfect punish even beyond spacing and block recovery. In tekken, there are a ton of -13 moves that are technically launch punishable by pEWGF from Kazuya. But actually hitting that punish in a match. , especially in tournament or online. That requires some godlike execution. Frankly, if you can hit perfect punishes on something like a d1 in any fighting game, you deserve the rewards (assuming the reward isn't some insane 70+% combo).
I remember playing lots of Kotal Kahn in MK11 and changing his D1 to be special cancel-able on block was the best thing ever, because it allowed for command grab mixups on block. That single handledly catapulted him into actual competitive viability lol.
Dude wanted everyone to have a -1 d1 on block like Liu from MKX or Kano in MK11. Basically he focused on the D1 and ignored all other things that comes with a D1 such as push-backs. Anyway, nice video Mayo: keep up the good work
Mayo you have to play Viscerafest. A boomer shooter with dash, bunnyhopping and low ammo system like Doom Eternal. I hope you read this comment and take a look to the game. BTW talking about Doom Eternal no one talks about the swapping mod mechanich through the weapon wheel, you can swap a mod while you are using the weapon wheel pressing f [or whatever (YES MAYO: WHATEVER I KNOW YOU LIKE THIS WORD A LOT) key you have].
I am totally down for this. My only complaint about this game is keeping fetal blows. I hate them so much. Glad combo breakers can break them but thats going to be a rare situation. I just want the game to not cater to bad players. A bad player could destroy decent to good players with fetal blows and crushing blows alone. Jade spammers I am talking to you.
i guess i am just old school. I remember we played MK for fun... not to do math. todays games are built for the EVOs and Influencers. not the average gamer. So, offline kontent will be amazing. Online will be miserable and we will see MK1 follow in MK11's footsteps. Throws are still a guessing game.. they still take chip even when reversed and the player does not get rewarded for the tech even though its already a guessing game. combos STILL bring the characters together like magnets even if the combo does not hit. Its got the Logo and a nice paint job, but in my opinion someone sucked the soul out of MK.. and lets hope i am wrong. but there is a distraction! *Combo combo combo combo combo* "DID YOU see that damage!"
Well Ed Boon said “it’s like a sandbox now” and there are also no variations and Kameos, meaning that this game will be indeed a mess during first 2-3 months…
@@Shuttergun1 yea I know that, but this one will be something very special, a very special kind of mess that most likely will force lots of people to quit.
I think we are arguing the wrong thing here. What we need to be mad about is that there is no "Realistic Mode" in MK yet. Now that is a crime. It's about time that they add that.
Fighting games seem to be the antithesis of casual gaming. Soooo deep. I haven't broken into one FOR REAL in a while bc the time it takes to invest and get good enough to even enjoy the game w some proficiency. This one looks pretty sick though. As long as they release a full game, and not some weird monetization scheme, they will do just fine this release! I like Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but holy crap, I only know 2 characters bc how the HECK am I going to know all these characters and all the movesets, it's amazing they can balance these games at all. I love fighting games, bc it's SOOOO RARE for people to be into them without being very decent/pretty hardcore gamers. Black anime kids who play fighting games are the best too lol. You don't get many casuals at all. So the fighting game space gets invaded the absolute least by posers and or knockoff games journalists giving their 2 cents where it's unwelcome. Gotta love the Fighting Game Community for that. Games journalists cant even get the credits to run in most fighting games. It's nice to know that so few of them try and push their crap in these communities bc they are unskilled/unknowledgeable/totally off base--and they WILL expose themselves. I just love it. Keep those costumes sexy, boiz
Why, WHY DO “They” (Netherealm) try to do “More”!? Always trying to add “gimmicks” to make the games “better” when they just bake them more frustrating… MK9 was a classic!!! All the subsequent games needed, was just a few little tweaks here and there!!! I also feel like the “cameo“system will get a little repetitive and gimmicky… especially with no option to have classic 1:1 matches… ??? Hopefully there will be enough outcry that they will be able to change that in the future with a download/update… 🤷🏻♂️
MK11 shortly became a poke fest with everyone wanting to strongarm their own turn. Glad that they're punishable now since it keeps mashers from throwing it out without consequence.
Ok guys, I have one secret about the complex and deep combat system of this wonderful game series. Works for me every time: Beat your opponent until he dies.
I agree with the main point of the video, but calling MK9 the golden child is a bit of a reach. MK9 is a fun game but it’s notoriously broken lol in fact you could make a case that’s what it’s MOST known for
IMO it’s poor game design. Everything you do loops back into D1. Minus in block? D1. Plus on block and want to continue pressure? D1. D1 into a tick throw etc.. Not only that but on hit it jails you and forces restand so now you’re put into a guessing game. This games devolves into a poke war.
Punishing low pokes is great. The MK team strongly works together with progamers and pls let me ask you an honest question: What was your best record and division in MK11? Maybe you are a pro, then you also have a good experience. If i had enough spare time to play mk11 alot, i was always in the top3 god tiers. Sometimes i joined the tournaments, but there are really strong players. When you start playing against the pros, you have to face perfect blocks and stuff like that. There is a huge gap between the pros and casual players. It is very annoying, if you cant punish poking. On the one hand poking is necessary, because it is also some kind of skill, if you know when you can interrupt the attack of your opponent. But in some cases, it is so annoying and exploitable, that you need a system how you can punish people, who lame with pokes too much. Poking can be a good thing, like doing 2-3 pokes and then do an above attack, because your opponent start blocking low. This is fun and enjoyfull, that you can feint and trick your opponent. In general, it is a good thing. But because it is also super easy to exploit and lame with it, there must also be a way to punish it. And i think it is a good new feature, if you can punish them. I think it is necessary and i like it. We will see how it will be in the upcoming title. I hope that you can perfect block low pokes and punish. Then everytime someone tries to lame with low pokes, i really hope they have to take a risk. But you cant just do a +frame on block because then everyone would simply normal block the poke and counter attack. This would require no skill at all. So a negative on block is mandatory in my opinion. But if you could get a +10 on perfect block, than it will be fine. I think the push is also very important, so you cant do several pokes in a row. So a minus on block with push, is a good thing. And + on perfect block without push, so you can punish. That would be great and i think this would be a good balance. I also think, that a poke which is not blocked, should also not work as a combo starter. I guess it won't be the case anyway, just wanted to mention it. The reason is simple, poking is already very cheaty. And i think the interruption with a poke is already very strong. You can interrupt many combos this way, and it would be very bad, if you could then start a poke combo in the middle of the combo of your opponent, because this would lead to the character becoming unplayable and lowest tier. If the players find out this will work soon and easily, nobody will want to play with this char anymore. There are some combos you can interrupt in mk11 with a punch and then punish with your own combo, but you could do quite a good balance, if you could then make the counter combo also interruptable with a poke or perfect block, this would be the most fair thing i guess, because both requires at least some skill. And this would make the pro matches very enjoyable to watch (or to play, if you are good enough)
12 year olds who got into Fighting Games with MK11 crying that you can't obnoxiously spam low pokes when picking Scorpion doesn't automatically win you the match

Has anyone else tho been getting it to where someone does a whole combo you should be able to down poke but it won’t let you
I that cut 1:45 is hella funny
3:46 - 3:51 meanwhile me, who never flawless blocked anything on purpose despite playing the game for over 500h 😅
Dude wanted everyone to have a -1 d1 on block like Liu from MKX or Kano in MK11. Basically he focused on the D1 and ignored all other things that comes with a D1 such as push-backs. Anyway, nice video Mayo: keep up the good work
Can't wait to fight people online who try to mash pokes and abuse jump ins when MK1 comes out. They'll get a serious reality check lmao.
Oh gosh the bgm is from Ghost Runner?xd
Jade spammers I am talking to you.
me who finished the series knowing only two special moves and the default hit and kick buttons
I hated pokes. Even in tournaments you could see fox and competitors spamming d1 sometimes
i guess i am just old school.
I'd love to see their reaction to 2A's in Soul Calibur
Holy shit I actually learned so much about why I suck at MK11 from this one video. The mastermind behind Quanfusion does it again
The Dawn Of A New Quan was one of my finest creations.
@@underthemayo Up3 went from being a fake 50-50 to being something that almost got Quan out of C tier (not really)
the frame data will likely change on release
d1 special canceling is wildly unfair, thank god they removed it
Where have we seen that you can't special cancel a d1?
Well Ed Boon said “it’s like a sandbox now” and there are also no variations and Kameos, meaning that this game will be indeed a mess during first 2-3 months…
Fun mess
Like almost every single other fighting game nobody knows what the fuck is happening in the first few months
@@Shuttergun1 yea I know that, but this one will be something very special, a very special kind of mess that most likely will force lots of people to quit.
Please make a video on SIGNALIS
Already been made.
Done. And in my games of the year video too.
a video regarding the importance of true mids is highly requested/expected/desirable! 😀
I have no idea what's going on, but a Mayo Vid makes my day better.
Drop a full MK9 review 🙃
ooooooOOOOO
Why, WHY DO “They” (Netherealm) try to do “More”!? Always trying to add “gimmicks” to make the games “better” when they just bake them more frustrating… MK9 was a classic!!! All the subsequent games needed, was just a few little tweaks here and there!!! I also feel like the “cameo“system will get a little repetitive and gimmicky… especially with no option to have classic 1:1 matches… ???
Hopefully there will be enough outcry that they will be able to change that in the future with a download/update… 🤷🏻♂️
1:43 mood rn🗿
Im sure there's ways to cover these punishable things with the cameos
Won't lie, that "DO-MORTAL KOMBAT 9" got me good.
That’s actually good news! That sounds great Because I’m tired of people who suck at the game spamming low pokes. It’s so fuckng annoying.
Can’t believe fatal blows are back. Terrible
A LITTLE GAME CALLED DOOMORTAL KOMBAT 9 LOL love the inclusion of the best content of this channel
mk1 needed this BADLY d1 mashing was so annoying in mk11, this and the wakeup system are making mk1 look promising
MK11 shortly became a poke fest with everyone wanting to strongarm their own turn. Glad that they're punishable now since it keeps mashers from throwing it out without consequence.
No more mashing for scrubs
I’m kinda happy D1’s are punishable now. It makes the D1’s spammers less annoying to deal with.
twitter user sees one thing he doesn't like: "oh this looks like a mess"
Do-Mortal Kombat 9 got me in stitches
I honest think this mortal kombat is gonna see a lot more competitive players coming up
Ok guys, I have one secret about the complex and deep combat system of this wonderful game series. Works for me every time:
Beat your opponent until he dies.
Member of the Mayo Militia, reporting for duty!
D1s should be full combo punishable to troll the scrubs in mk1 who live on d1 mash. It would be funny to see their reaction
Pokes Def shouldn't be punishable but negative enough for the opponent to Take his turn
Lows should always be punishable imo. Pokes is a whole other convo. Tekken is filled with punishable lows
I agree with the main point of the video, but calling MK9 the golden child is a bit of a reach. MK9 is a fun game but it’s notoriously broken lol in fact you could make a case that’s what it’s MOST known for
@charleshastings7260 yeah well again, it’s a fun game but it was notorious for being broken, especially in the competitive scene
I wonder what Mayo thinks about Street Fighter 6.
Best combo will allways be 3 d1 in a row into a grab.
Punishing low pokes is great. The MK team strongly works together with progamers and pls let me ask you an honest question:
What was your best record and division in MK11?
I’m not very good at fighting games, but I never d1 into nothing. I’m always trying to deal max damage and I suck at defense.
Just randomly block down at times chances are one in three hits of a combo will be a low until u remember it exactly
12 year olds who got into Fighting Games with MK11 crying that you can't obnoxiously spam low pokes when picking Scorpion doesn't automatically win you the match
They need to make Doomguy as guests character
This is why I hate social media. That dude crying about something that's already been in mk but he wouldn't know because he most likely didn't play mk9. Please don't speak on anything you have no knowledge of.
Swept the floor with bro😂
johnny's d3 was -9 in mkx and i don't remember anyone bitching about it....welll besides me as an a-list main 🤣
That's why we were always using d4 instead :D
@@Rizzo91 true that, sometimes it was useful to throw you opponent off his game though
Well, as an another a list main, let me complain about johnnys d3 being -9 on block. Shid, liu kang has a 7f d1 with more range and its -4 on block with much faster recovery. Also let me complain about johnnys s1 being 9f startup thats not fair.
The problem is gamers don't use it with that purpose
Isn’t the fact that down 1 is negative good for interrupting? They mash down 1 and you use your own to interrupt? The tweet just doesn’t make sense lol. Down 1 has utility, just don’t mash it anymore
This vídeos is gold
Under the mayo quan chi coming back???
Down 1 in MK11 is why that game isn't taken seriously. It's so brainless.
"Have you never played the greatest game of all time, Doome Et-Mortal Kombat 9?"
You might have dry delivery, but don't think I don't catch all the humor you sprinkle throughout your videos. Skillful writer, you are
Thanks ;) Letting my sense of humor out makes the long work sessions more fun for me.
