  • I find a 2003 Polaris Predator 500 for $800. This machine was worked on by three mechanics and nobody could figure out what was wrong with it. Can we solve the mystery and make this quad run? #Polaris, #Preadtor, #500cc,

That exhaust is great. I can’t say exactly but I believe just the muffler cost around $400 and a yoshimura header would cost about another $2-300.
Also the gold links make no difference where they are at. I had one about 6 months ago with the same issue. Incorrect timing and I just did it like any other motor and it ran just fine

Woodruff key is designed to sheer so the flywheel can spin to prevent crank damage or snapping. The key is there to align for timing. If the flywheel spun you will need to lap the flywheel to the crank. Make sure to clean surface of oil and torque to spec.

What's going on Joe just wanted to give you a heads up on that 03 Polaris Predator 500 on that stock timing chain there is three brass links don't worry about where the brass links are just make sure the engine is set at top dead center and set the cams where they belong if you go to replace that cam chain and don't get an oem one there's no brass links so you would have to do it that way anyway but yes it is a pain in the ass to unbolt the right side cover and everything else that comes along with it to put that brass link back on that the dot on the gear Keep up with the good videos and I'm really excited to finally see the same exact bike I have I know a lot about the bike I've been completely through my whole bike who I bought it from tore it apart keep up with the good videos and I will keep watching

So true. I bought a 2005 raptor 350 brand new when I was 18. Drove it into the ground like a dummy. Never changed the oil and left it at my parents house when I moved out in 2006. It literally sat non-running under a tarp until coronavirus hit and my company sent me home to work. Being at home all the time, I decided to pick it up and randomly rebuild it after 13 years of sitting. Replaced the carb, tires, chain, upgraded air filter, modified air box and rejetted. Did more too that's just too much to list here. Runs better than it did off the lot in 2004. Sometimes people get caught up, lose interest or have bigger projects to work on. I'm just glad I never let my wife convince me to sell it for $500 when it was sitting.

I've has a couple predators and rebuilt a few. They come factory with Fox Podium Shocks, stainless braided brake lines, the wheels are supposed to be Douglas Yellow Dots. Looks like someone swapped the good yellow dots for some other junk rims. Also the 2003's came stock with 9" rear wheels instead of 8". Hope you get it going though, they run awesome! Also for future advice, the carb on those is vacuum actuated so keep that in mind if you have a fuel delivery issue.

Glad to see you get a Predator, the 03 wasn't the best year of them but they are still pretty good. Hope to see you flip it into an awesome looking and running quad. Parts like the Pro Steering and Fox shocks came as standard features from the factory, someone actually downgraded the wheels as the factory ones were Douglas yellow label wheels that were light and very strong. The Yoshimura exhaust is nice but not the best option for the Predator, find a nice used Pure Polaris or get a new HMF slip on. Also the stock headers on these make more power than any aftermarket header except the one Doug Nicholas designed. If the stock cdi ever fails replace it with another one, the only 2 good options for them from the aftermarket was from Vortex and Dynatek but are no longer offered. The other aftermarket ones don't retard the timing causing problems with the one way starter clutch. The 03 modes had odd sized rear hubs forcing you to run 10 inch rear wheels but it appears those have been changed so you may be good to go there. If you do ever decide to mod the motor then I would suggest you talk to Doug Nicholas, he's the man when it comes to getting insane horsepower numbers from these motors. Get his 520cc big bore along with his head and carb work and you'll easily beat any similar modded quad. Or if you wanna go real crazy with it then get his 574cc big bore option. The stock intake is a pretty bad design, but Aaen Performance has a good update for that with a mud plate available to keep the elements away from your air filter.

Yo, take the chain back off the cams, turn the flywheel to get the timing mark lined up down bottom...... then time the top. The crank timing is probably out although the top is correct. The crank also needs to be timed correctly on these. Hence the gold links. Just because the gold link down bottom was right, doesn’t mean the sprocket it’s sat on is in the correct spot. (If that makes any sense)

Had one good bottom torque but top end not so much. I wanted a Polaris 525 but could never find one reasonably priced . They have the KTM motor so they're a beast

Yoshimura are great. Expensive, but great. My buddy had one on his outlaw 525. Loud as hell! Only thing we didn't like about it is their really stubborn when they get hot. Other then that it would beat my fully built yfz450 and my buddies raptor 660.

Those Predator's were heavy but a pretty reliable motor. I had one that looked a lot like that with same exhaust I sold back in 2008. I think I have a homemade engine tear down and assembly video I bought back then if you need it but prob don't as you've already torn into it pretty far. Loved the Fuji moto in that thing but it couldn't match the KTM in my Polaris 525S I sold it to get as far as power goes for racing. Great trail bike though and never had a problem except for the typical chunks of metal in the oil pan after breaking in. LOL Cheers!

Hey bro if the timing marks are correctly lined up and stay lined up after turning over a bunch of times how would it matter if timing chain links are situated different? Aren't they there to only make it a little easier to time? And if the timing is out isn't it a bad idea to turn it over to find spark?

Nice video joe. I was thinking about the gold links in the cam chain. Honestly to me I think it's just a fancy thing Polaris is saying with the gold links bc in theory the chain links should all be the same the only thing that truly drives your cam timing are those dots.so I dont think the links are the problem but I'm only few mins into your vid.lol

I've messed with alot of cranks and most flywheels wont just push on without the key ways lining up.but that key does look small.

@@demetribreeden4784 I know, my point is that you shouldn't just take that for truth when someone says that. Don't forget he's trying to sell something.

Same thing happened to my chainsaw and it's two stroke so not as many things rely on timing but it would not even attempt to fire off until I lined back up right. The crank on my saw had a made into it keyway and 8t had sheared the permanent key way 9ff of the crank but after lining it up right and tightening it down it has been running fine for four yrs now wo any trouble or wo moving any

Great find when they work I love my predator but it’s way too fast and loud but thats my type
My predator loves to shred the woodruff key so it could be that
It sounds too slow you might have to check for a bent valves
